Saturday Afternoon Open Thread - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]
— Open Blogger

Here's an open thread to get you through until the next serious post pops up. Perhaps it will lighten the mood a little.

Times they are a changin'.

Things aren't as simple as they used to be, not that they were ever simple but, they were never this complicated before.

And the kids, we bemoan how rotten they are but, hell, who raised them? I mean, really?! Not every rotten kid came from rotten parents and not every rotten parent produces bad kids but, more often than not, well... the gravitational force exerted on a Red Delicious results in said Red Delicious lying proximate to Malus Domestica.

And sex... my heavens at the hyper-sexual imagery they are basted in. It's everywhere. And, simultaneous to the increase in their exposure to sex is a loss of the traditional family. Kids are left alone, fending for themselves, with television and video games serving as surrogate parents.

It takes its toll.

CoolCzech really deserves the credit for this post because it was his pictorial of the change in culture between the 80's and the 20teens which made me stop and think about it.

To make it up to you, here's a photo of an 80's-era piglet, complete with legwarmers.

Cute, isn't it? It's as if it has never been exposed to the harsh ways of the world.

Keep your kids safe and teach them well because, when you don't, the consequences can be dire...

Don't let this happen to your own little piglets.

BTW, I watched Don Jon tonight. I enjoyed it. And, you Morons, Scarlett Johnasson is great in it.

Now. I'll leave you to your deep thoughts.

5 Finally dropped into the new "bottle shop" in the neighborhood. Trying two brands I've never had before, Piedmont Pilsner by Olde Hickory Brewery here in NC, supposedly they import all their hops, etc. from Germany and Czech., so I'm hoping it's kind of like Bitburger, which they did not have. The other one I've seen before and wondered about, YETI Imperial Stout by the Great Divide Brewing Co. I'll report my findings shortly.

22 Kids definitely have very little supervision now compared to when I was a kid back in the 50s.  When I was a kid there was only 2 women that I am aware of who worked outside of the house in the whole block.

Now in my neighborhood there is only one that I am aware of with school age children who does not work.

And in the urban environment the "moms" are single and most of them stay strung out on some kind of drug financed by twenty-nine different welfare programs while their  27 kids roam the streets doing ever lawbreaking thing they can do.

And the sad thing about that last thing is that it wasn't that way until LBJ's great society started.

52 Rant on I am 67 years old. I love this site! You are entirely correct about the sexual nature of our current time. I can live with it; frankly, I kinda enjoy it! My concern is the disintegration of the family. Yes, marriage still exists but is not a permanent state of relations. (I don't care one bit about what kind of marriage it is.) I care that 48% of live births are out of wedlock. I care that a large fraction of these babies are born directly into the welfare system. I care that the public education system cannot, or will not, rescue these babies so that they can hold down a decent job. I care that a fraction of these babies will spend a large part of their lives in prison; or worse, dead at an early age. I really care that our progressive government doesn't give a shit about these babies, except when we have a war and the babies become cannon fodder. Through no fault of their own, these babies are taking our country into the cesspool. There must be a better way. Rant off

The one with Emily Browning? Really strange. A college student who doesn't need the money takes a job as a sort of prostitute with no actual sex. She takes a sedative and sleeps naked with wealthy old men. Actually sleeps and nothing else. The men derive a thrill from their lost youth without any pressure to perform or awareness of the young woman restraining her repulsion at their aged physiques.

Funny thing is, once the oldest TiFW daughter went off to college, she became quite conservative in her views towards sex.

Started bemoaning what "kids these days" were exposed to.....

OTOH, a lot of the parents my age who had kids starting in the late 80s gave them an absurd amount of supervision, becoming known as helicopter parents always hovering nearby. When I was growing up I didn't know anyone who had so many scheduled activities as these kids. We might have had some sport or music lessons that came up after school but generally handle getting together with other kids for ourselves.

When I was a kid I could disappear on a summer morning and not return until late afternoon. I'd be completely out of touch unless I had some change for a phone call. My folks simply didn't think this was cause for worry. Nowadays, we have nanny cams and cell phones that allow a parent to keep a GPS track on the kid.

A lot of the young adults I meet now were never untracked by their parents or supervised by surrogates for more than an hour or so until they reached high school. And people wonder why so many teens today are uninterested in obtaining a driver's license when it had been so intensely important to previous generations.

HH, blame the culture.  In our more sexually aware era of today, sure "lube job" automatically makes us think of something besides scheduled vehicle or robot maintenance.

Earlier line still cracks me up - "Never touch the stuff myself Sir. Promotes rust."

91 Unnatural, I tell you. Having spent a reasonable amount of time observing, I can tell you that piglets seek mud. There is probably some good reason for it that I don't understand, but given vistas of grassy/wooded dry areas, the hogs will congregate and wallow in any mudhole they can find.

94 The other one I've seen before and wondered about, YETI Imperial Stout by the Great Divide Brewing Co. I'll report my findings shortly. Great Divide's Hercules IPA is great. Well worth a try. Also, if you're like IPA, see if they have "Mycernary"* by Odell Brewing Co. It's my all time favorite. So hoppy it has almost a grapefruit top note. 10% abv. *Yes, it's spelled correctly. Myrcenary is the chemical that hops imparts to beer. BTW, really cool box art too...

I read that you can take a $100 EBT card to the grocery store, buy one grape for .02, and they have to give you the $99.98 change in cash if you request it. If true, Colorado's attempt to stop people from buying pot with EBT cards seems futile, as well as all other attempts to control EBT card use nationwide.

117 James Arness : "After high school, he attended one semester at Beloit College before receiving his draft notice in 1943. He entered the army and trained at Camp Wheeler, Georgia, before shipping out for North Africa. After landing at Casablanca, Arness joined the 3rd Infantry Division in time for the invasion of Anzio. Ten days after the invasion, Arness was severely wounded in the leg and foot by German machine-gun fire. His wounds, which plagued him the rest of his life, resulted in his medical discharge from the army."

I've seen all the above done (even bought some steaks) - I knew a guy that would take orders & be back in 30 minutes.

Don't forget "Tarantula".   Also one of my favorite movies of that era was "War of the Worlds".

One of the  funniest scenes and lines from "War of the Worlds" is  at the dance and all the electricity went out.  When it  finally came on everyone notices that their watches had stopped.  Then the main character, in his impromptu investigation, asks, "Does anyone have a pocket compass"?, every man in the room starts searching their pockets.  I laugh just thinking about it.

134 #133

I heard about something similar from a client who had a lot of 'imported' labor in part of his company. He said these guys were straight from the sticks and had never lived any place that didn't have dirt floors, roofs so permeable they let smoke right through, and, of course, no electricity or indoor plumbing. He said he had one place where they dug up the back yard to create a latrine because the indoor flush toilet was completely alien to them.

What I found baffling is what task he set these guys to doing that they could be easily taught. Since I had some suspicions about the extent of his business I chose not to pursue the question.

135 This thread is probably dead but I'm gonna tell you guys this anyway: last night I was out with friends and one of them related that she checks her 12 year old daughter's Instagram all the time, and she was scandalized to see a video of two other 12 year old girls dry humping on a bed and proudly sharing this with the world. One of the girls also had a photo of herself in her underwear with her breasts falling out of her tank top and a knowing smirk on her black-eyelined face. At 12 years old. I literally wanted to weep. Where do kids get this stuff from? My own 12 year old doesn't use Instagram or Facebook and the only thing she's interested in other than her French horn is Dr. Who and Transformers. I'm so happy that she's a geek and slightly socially awkward.
