— Gabriel Malor FRIDAY!
The RNC's chief of digital ops has a piece at Roll Call about the changes over there and the 2014 game plan. I've been in the new data center; it's pretty cool.
A top State Department official for European affairs apologized yesterday for saying "F*ck the EU" on a phone call that was intercepted and leaked. Speculation is that the Russians are responsible for the leak.

Comcast customer surprised to learn new router is also public hotspot: http://bit.ly/MuHfSy
”Comcast started adding the public hotspot to its modems by default in mid-2013, as we reported at the time. Customers can turn the second signal off if they choose, but it's definitely an opt-out program rather than opt-in.
In an FAQ, Comcast doesn't provide instructions for turning it off manually. You have to call Comcast for that. "You will always have the ability to disable the XFINITY Wi-Fi feature on your Wireless Gateway by calling 1-800-XFINITY," the company says. Presumably, a customer service representative will try to talk you out of disabling it.
"We encourage all subscribers to keep this feature enabled as it allows more people to enjoy the benefits of XFINITY Wi-Fi around the neighborhood," the company says.”
Right. And when some perv parks in front of your house and “enjoys the benefits of XFINITY Wi-Fi” by downloading child porn through your router guess who will be the last hop on the audit trail and who will be hosting the search warrant party.
Oh, and Good Morning everyone!

I am equally sure what Gabe looked at was the RNC equivalent of CoverOregon's faux exchange websites. Unless I miss my guess, Gabe's background is in law...not IT.
"Look at all our progress! See? The three primary colors are ably represented on our sooooooper dooooper web site!"
To the RNC, "conservtive" means "staying with things that don't work." So I'm sure they'll have plenty of Selectric typewriters on hand for the next election.

Why would the RNC think that we'd trust them on digital ops? Srsly.
We did that last time and the only competence they demonstrated was the ability to issue very large checks to produce a non-functioning digital operation.
However, I'm sure all the the insiders laughed all the way to the bank.

Frankenfeinstein had a blue ribbon day of dumbfuckery yesterday. In addition to that abject stupidity, she was on the Senate committee who approved the cop killing defender's spot heading up, get this, the civil rights division at double aught Stedman's DoJ. The vote happened after that senile cocksucker Patrick Leahy wheezingly disapproved Daniel Faulkner's widow from testifying about what a POS he was who used every bigoted stereotype of her husband to try and get his guilty shitstain off. Other donk luminaries voting for the jizzmop were Schmucky Schooooooomer, the unfunny Stuart Smiley and Dick "Drooling Retard" Durbin. Every one of these trained seals clap in lockstep.

Maybe if the big money people had gotten behind somebody that actually believed he could win and didn't turn in a choking dog performance in the last two debates, we wouldn't be having this discussion. You can have all the database sophistication in the world and when you have a dogshit candidate like Romney it doesn't matter one fucking iota.

Years ago I remember reading in, I think it was, Popular Mechanics about a guy who built a boat in his attic. He got it out by cutting the side of his house and installing hinges at the level of the attic floor. He hinged the side of the house down and used it as a ramp to get the boat down to ground level. I wonder if it was somebody who now comments here...

145: " I loved Open Range but it was mainly from Duval."
I can't recall a bad Duval performance.
But I have to take the approach of enjoying a movie for what it is, on it's own merits, regardless of who is acting in it these days.
If I skipped a movie because one or more of the actors are total fucktards, then I'd never get to watch a movie again.
The only exception I have to this loose rule is that I just can't bring myself to watch a Matt Damon flick.

Idle trivia, Lucille Ball was up for the part of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With The Wind.
Of course, pretty much EVERY actress was up for the part of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With The Wind. Still I recall seeing a headshot of Ball in the time period and being amazed.

Polliwog,
Any wireless router is a public wireless router unless you enable the security protocols. Check the documentation that came with your router to set up basic security. There are also some good suggestions here: http://bit.ly/1exCMLb as well.
Hope it helps!

The bandwidth available through the cable is pretty significant. The cable companies throttle it down for the home user, so my guess is that there is excess capacity available, which is what is used for the public hot spots.

Re: 162. I forgot to address the Comcast gear. If you have a Comcast provided interface box between your router and the cable connection coming into the house you should check with Comcast for the make/model of that particular unit to make sure it does not host a hot spot or, if it does, how to turn the hot spot off.

They do. Its a real PIA if your not a Comcast customer, as your IPads, etc keep trying to hop on to these "public" sites. If you turn off discovery, then you have to manually re-enable it when you get to somewhere where you do have WiFi (home, work, etc.)
I don't know how they handle the bandwidth prioritizing. My biggest concern would be a backdoor thru the modem firmware from the public net to your local private nets. If that procedures doesn't include pushing a hot soldering iron thru a hole to disable the public hotspot - then it isn't seeing my house.

The original story is at: http://bit.ly/MuHfSy they give a description of the affected gear. And from what the article says it does appear that the hot spot is truly "public" ie does not require authentication.

public WiFi (available to Comcast customers only) New definition of 'public'
Comcast customers meaning, having an account with Comcast
Comcast account, meaning you have an account ID, and password
Meaning you can use your neighbor's Public WiFi by logging on with your comcast account ID and password.
Meaning you can turn your Comcast equipment off and hog your neighbor's bandwidth. Who pays for the bits?
Well, if you have a comcast account, user ID and password. . . .

I also wonder what kind of audit trail they have for these logins. If Murphy's Laws apply (and they generally do) there probably isn't any. My assumption is that any "public" logon is routed thru a proxy for authentication and hopefully prioritization vice the point of presence customer's usage. That proxy would be logging the nefarious deeds. This bigger security problem is that those passwords are going to get hacked, and they provide gateway access into your homes, the web cams on devices thru out your house, your tax files, your private photos - everything - then use your PC to host a kiddie porn/smack reseller website. People assume they are secure because its a big ugly string on the side of your modem. But, once it gets in the wild ...

At some point Boehner and McConnell have to grow a spine and tell the world that the time for playing these dogshit games is over and either 404Care should be shitcanned or put into place so everybody can experience its wonderful awesomeness. Nobody should be fooled by these delaying tactics and waivers but we have a lot of dumbfucks in the country.

That's the issue. If you let your kids play outside on their own, your some sort of delinquent parent. I've had the cops come by because a neighbor saw my kids playing in the woods ALONE <gasp> 50 yards from my backdoor. I filed a FOIA to find who filed the report, but they won't cough it up.
