1 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Tuesday, January 14, 2014.  On this day in 1954 the Hudson Motor Car company merged with Nash-Kelvinator to form AMC.  AMC was bought out by Chrysler in 1987.

45 More money for job training.

1. What are these "jobs" you speak of?

When I worked for DOL back in the halycon days of the Bush Administration, DOL spent about $2B on training to put 90,000 people into jobs they would not have had otherwise.

With such a shitty ROI like that, we could have just as easily written every one of those people a check for $21,000 and then saved money by cutting the massive overhead that administers that gravy train.

Oh, and the stats have gotten worse since then too.   See?

THIS!  And all you need do to prove it is ask yourself one question: why is it that three dead border patrol agents, three hundred dead Mexican civilians, and an ambassador murdered by terrorists in Libya all non-stories while a traffic jam in New Jersey is the 21st century equivalent of the Lindberg kidnapping.

If the media provided honest coverage of the news the Democrats would never win another national election.

71 Key elements of a new nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers are contained in an informal, 30-page text not yet publicly acknowledged by Western officials, Iran’s chief negotiator said Monday. Abbas Araqchi disclosed the existence of the document in a Persian-language interview with the semiofficial Iranian Students News Agency. The new agreement, announced over the weekend, sets out a timetable for how Iran and the six nations, led by the United States, will implement a deal reached in November that is aimed at restraining Iran’s nuclear ambitions. When officials from Iran and the world powers announced that they had completed the implementing agreement, they didn’t release the text of the deal, nor did they acknowledge the existence of an informal addendum. In the interview, Araqchi referred to the side agreement using the English word “nonpaper,” a diplomatic term used for an informal side agreement that doesn’t have to be disclosed publicly.

83 well the spending bill kinda sucks.

what I see are some very small-ball 'victories' for Republicans but a continued march down the slippery slope of statism in terms of priorities.

who cares if there is some toothless rule about blocking the IRS targeting of conservatives if it also provides the premise for federal takeover of all childcare?

"And while Republicans refused to finance ObamaÂ’s push for universal pre-kindergarten classes, they granted his request to expand Head Start partnerships that benefit toddlers and infants."

that is just the incrementalist game that the left plays.  getting these "partnerships" is about 99% as good as getting a full federal takeover of day care because it sets the wheel in motion.  and once it's in motion, it can't be stopped.

All the rules are toothless as long as you have Repuke "leadership" which refuses to enforce a fucking one of them.  People in the IRS who targeted conservative groups should be in prison for a long time but have any of them been fired, much less prosecuted?  We are living in a post Constitutional age and both worthless parties are complicit in it.

It seems almost a 100% certainty that any competent investigation of the IRS mess would, like so many other illegal and/or unconstitutional acts, would follow a well-defined trail right to Choom Boy. Can't have that, you know.

The only thing this side of a bloody conflict that will restore the country to even a semblance of its former greatness would be the arrest and incarceration of hundreds in Washington DC, and the repeal of every act they committed or enabled.

126 @Bannion, Re: your BLS stats. Have you ever read Sowell's biography? He talks about a time at the BLS where he conceived of a way to determine if some program or another were working. The way the program was set up (I think it was in Puerto Rico actually) was incidentally a near perfect experiment. All he needed was some stats. But BLS won't give them to him, they made him go to Agriculture. Agriculture insisted the stat's weren't his to have. He fought with them for a year I think. Eventually he just quit to do other things. But he notes he still never got the stats he needed. He closes that story with a good point: BLS isn't concerned if what they're actually doing works or not, they just want to keep their personal budget flowing .

When they write the history of the United States, after we're gone, it will be a story of a naive people who thought constitutional republicanism could work.

Or maybe more accurately, it will be that for 200 or so years, it seemed to be working well enough, but that a regression to the mean was always going to occur, and eventually humans went back to  their shackles.

Disturbing news.  We bought a Nest thermostat for Christmas and while I'm a little concerned about the engineering (it doesn't use relays and I don't see much in the way of spike protection...two big big issues when you're attaching something that draws power from often-old HVAC systems) it's worked OK.  I was *this* close to purchasing a Nest Protect, but now if Google is going to be collecting my data I'm much less likely to purchase/use anything from Nest.

204 Minutes after the American consulate in Benghazi came under assault on Sept. 11, 2012, the nation’s top civilian and uniformed defense officials — headed for a previously scheduled Oval Office session with President Obama — were informed that the event was a “terrorist attack,” declassified documents show. The new evidence raises the question of why the top military men, one of whom was a member of the president’s Cabinet, allowed him and other senior Obama administration officials to press a false narrative of the Benghazi attacks for two weeks afterward.

The public might not agree on much these days, but one thing it overwhelmingly believes is that government is ill-equipped to manage one-sixth of the economy — 67% said so in the January IBD/TIPP poll.

This distrust has only gotten worse as the ObamaCare debacle unfolded, climbing 4 points in one month. Even Democrats — at 44%, up from 34% the month before — are increasingly skeptical.

229 The New York Times reported last week on Reid’s “brutish style” and “uncompromising control” over the amendments process in the Senate. Why are more people finally catching on to Reid’s flagrant disregard for Senate customs? In part because conservatives aren’t the only ones complaining.

Democrats such as Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota — who wants to repeal Obamacare’s medical-device tax — and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York — who has waged a highly publicized campaign to reform the way the military handles sexual-assault cases — have been denied votes on their proposed amendments to various bills. Gillibrand had hoped to attach her sexual-assault amendment to the defense-appropriations bill that passed in December, but no amendments were allowed. Klobuchar has called for “a more open amendment process” because she’d like a vote on repealing the medical-device tax.

The Weather Channel has removed its service from DIRECTV, and while thatÂ’s regrettable, DIRECTV will continue to provide its customers with what theyÂ’ve been asking for, around-the-clock, 100 percent weather news and information now available on WeatherNation (Channel 362).

Consumers understand there are now a variety of other ways to get weather coverage, free of reality show clutter, and that The Weather Channel does not have an exclusive on weather coverage – the weather belongs to everyone.

Most consumers donÂ’t want to watch a weather information channel with a forecast of a 40 percent chance of reality TV. So with that in mind, we are in the process of discussing an agreement to return the network to our line-up at the right value for our customers.

People think like this:

"90 million people isn't that many.    There are, what?    Like, 300     million people in the country?   So 90 million isn't even, like,    a   third of    that."

Things like math and demographics are lost on these people.   Being able to identify "less than a third" is considered the pinnacle of intellectual prowess.

My husband and I were talking about this very subject this morning.  We've been reading the "Politically Incorrect Guide"s to the Founding Fathers, American History, and the Constitution.  For him as a native-born Canadian, it's been a real eye-opener to the concept of federalism/states' rights and the true greatness and genius of those who founded our country.  For me, a reinforcement of all of this, plus stuff about John Adams, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, George Mason, the method of how constitutional law is taught in this country's law schools (explains a LOT!), the slippery slope of  SCOTUS decisions from early in our history, and some questionable presidential actions even from Washington & Jefferson that some of their less scrupulous fellow presidents exploited later.  These are easy reads and we would highly recommend them to anyone whose heads are not permanently stuck in the sand and those who stick their fingers in their ears saying, "la, la, la, I can't hear you!" when you talk about the state of the nation.

The biggest thing we took away from these books was how few founding fathers initially were for independence from Britain and how few it actually took to start the ball rolling once it was determined nothing else could work for freedom-loving people.

We've been having a discussion about who today would be the counterparts of some of the key figures during that era.  Broadly, we decided the Dems would be the British government and the establishment GOP the colonial loyalists.

Naturally Choom Boy as George III (although that insults even George III),

Ted Cruz or Sarah Palin as Patrick Henry for fiery rhetoric,

Rand Paul as Samuel Adams for stirring up freedom-lovers in Massachusetts,

John McCain as John Adams for defending the British soldiers who took part in the Boston Massacre and for advocating the US should model itself on a constitutional monarchy.

Oh, as Joe Biden as King George's court jester.

Admittedly we haven't as yet put too much thought into this.  I'd love to get the Horde's feedback.

Emily has one brother- but he lives so far away in the county I have not seen him since spring. The black folks across the street sort-of adopted me, but recently have been very withdrawn. Since one of their kids came home who is a convicted child molester. The adults of the family? No better people. Their kids? Kind of marginal, at best. I suspect they are immersed in their own troubles now. They do have a key to my gates, to get in.

The first time I saw the Allmans they opened for Rare Earth, that dogshit group that did white boy covers of Motown songs like "Get Ready".  This was right after their first release on Capricorn, which I pretty much played the grooves off of.  It was a time when bands still wore suits and you see these Southern greasers go on stage in jeans and tank tops.  They launched right into Statesboro Blues and I'm thinking WTF as I watched Duane on slide.  They played a *really* long set with long songs like "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" back at the time when songs tended to be fairly brief.  They ended with Whipping Post, which on the album was about a five minute song but in concert was extended like on Live at the Fillmore East, and then went into Mountain Jam.  They completely turned my head around about improvisation.

Rare Earth never had a chance.

We were focusing on Adams' defending the British soldierswho participated the Boston Massacre. Sounded exactly like what McCain does.

Except, IIRC, Sam Adams persuaded John to do it in order to prove to the Brits that the redcoats could get a fair trial in the colonies - and it says a lot about Adams and the restraint of the troops that night that only two of them were ever punished for the Massacre.

Now I wonder who would be our James Otis and our Governor Hutchinson (who, I think, would have come around to the patriot side had Otis and Sam Adams not hated, bullied and reviled the man so much).

Here's what I found at WZ: It's a report is sponsored by John PodestaÂ’s (who Obama just hired) Center for American Progress that will be given to Obama by Maria Shriver.

"The report is a groundbreaking investigation into the millions of women who are doing it all and barely scraping by, struggling to provide and parent in a nation that hasnÂ’t kept pace with the modern realities of their lives. It combines research, analysis and ideas from the nationÂ’s top academic institutions and think tanks, essays by leading thinkers, stories of real women struggling with our modern economy, and a comprehensive poll."

290 Grace and peace be with all- Today's hymn of the faith is "Thou Hidden Source of Calm Repose". It is another hymn (1749) with words by Charles Wesley, the brother of John. Both were involved in the founding of the Methodist movement, but Charles had a greater interest in the writing and poetry of hymns that helped spread the growing evangelical movement. John was more of the preacher and organizer. Methodist hymns are now found in the hymnbooks of many denominations. I wish I could find a better setting but the tune is lovely and the words are inspiring. I think it's nice to let the words and the music just wash over one as it will. Some of the words: "Jesus my all in all thou art, my rest in toil, my ease in pain, the healing of my broken heart, in war my peace, in loss my gain, my smile beneath the tyrant's frown, in shame my glory and my crown." http://www.hymnal.net/hymn.php/h/532 Prayers for people in distress, those who need work, those who need healing and strength and for our country and its leaders. Wow, that was early.  I think I saw the band once more before Duane died and once after that.  Duane was just an incredible musician and it's too bad that he checked out so early because you like to think he'd have reached even loftier heights.  As it was he accomplished a lot.  I heard a tape of an interview he did on a Boston radio station and he made it clear that he was influenced by people like John Coltrane which really came out in his approach to music.  Plus the people he interacted with at the Muscle Shoals studios were all major talents.

310 I saw Skynyrd open for Humble Pie. Steve Marriott got booed off stage and LS came back on.

I considered Skynrd a minor league version of the Allmans but I liked some of their songs and they seemed like a fun group.  I never understood the appeal of Humble Pie.  At all.

311 304? Notsothoreau? Thanks. I'm as good with Emmy's death as you can be with such a thing. Naturally it was "a season in Hell" but when I went to the Island 11 months after her death and saw face to face the widow of an old friend of mine the terrible darkness around me lifted away.

I'm getting out. Talking to people- especially women. About as good as I can be.

No I think the True GOP is past caring.  They're gonna pass Amigo Grande! and wait for the Communist schools to indoctrinate the Mexican kids who will be jedi hand-waved amnesty by executive fiat after "normalization."  We need to accept the GOP doesn't want us for anything other than their version of African-Americans.

313 I would almost trade Obama a 6 trillion personal bribe to restore normal order...

315 Yea... I would not compare Adams with McCain. That's borderline slander, tbh.
