17 I mentioned on the ONT my Art Appreciation class had me appreciating New Jersey yesterday. I got to see Claude Monet's "Water Lilies and Japanese Bridge" in the flesh. I'm so glad that I took this class. Also, a Van Gogh, several Degas, a Goya, a GIANT Reubens. And some contemporary crap I snorted at.

OT, as much as a question on the morning thread can be OT....

 

I need someone for a perspective check.  Anyone seen that Disney (puke) movie Frozen?  I was dragged to see it with my kids.  When asked whether I liked it or not, I had to say I hated it immensely.  It seemed like a gay movie to me, with proseletyzing subtext and that annoying fucking snowman prancing around. 

 

I have lots of other reasons for hating it, from the settings that make no fucking sense to the evil character suddenly turning evil for no other reason than to provide a plot twist to just stupid stupid plots.  But I'm being told that I'm paranoid because this movie looked like a Glee production to me.

 

Anyone else seen it and can let me know if I'm way off base?

So I'm listening to Stern on the way into work and he's got Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein in for an interview. He tells Howard he's going to direct a movie about a Jewish ghetto where the Jews had an uprising. Howard says, "oh, a holocaust movie." Weinstein says, "no, I like to think of it more as 'Jews with guns.'" Howard asked him if he's a gun owner and to which he quickly replied absolutely not, he in fact thinks nobody should have guns. Of course, if he were ever marched into the camps, well then he'd find a gun or something. What a twit!


He goes on to say he's working on a film with Meryl Streep about the NRA that will blow the doors off that organization. Or in other words, he's making a horrible propaganda film that will be seen by half a dozen people, but win twice as many Oscars.


He also said he loves everybody except for conservative Republicans. I don't go to many movies, but he absolutely convinced me that the few I do see will not include any with his name in the credits.

Here is a comment from Richard Fisher, of the Dallas Fed:

Here is some math confronting policymakers: Excess reserves are currently 65 percent of the monetary base and rising. The only other time excess reserves as a percentage of the base have come anywhere close to this level was at the close of the 1930s, when the ratio hit 41 percent. We are in uncharted territory."

 

What this means is that we are in a deflationary spiral 50% worse than the great depression, and if by some chance we begin to see actual growth, we are in for inflation that would     make the seventies    look good.

Most of the Dodd-Frank provisions (well, the ones that will really depress lending) didn't go into effect until last week. 1/9 was the magic date. There were a lot of regulatory changes that went into effect prior to that, but not any that would have made it harder for people to qualify for loans- now the restrictions on lending have been ratcheted up. What that means in re: your comment, is that it's safe to assume that Dodd-Frank hasn't had that much of a negative impact on lending, yet. That's still to come. So this is people saving rather than spending.

132 Gingy, I went to an exhibit at the MOMA in Houston about 8-9 years ago where brought together a collection of all the greats from Monet to Dali to Van Gogh to Pollock to Picasso. It was TOTALLY AMAZING. Worth the 7 hour round trip drive. What amazed me was I never realized that Monet's paintings were so huge and Dali's were so tiny. Water lilies, never realized it was more than one panel either.

So why they didn't deal with lending criteria directly they had a surprisingly ripple effect. I actually had a little first hand experience with this. My loan finalized in August of 2012, my dad was refinancing a few months later. Same lender (same guy actually) but the bank was more cautious due to the new environment (which also consists of a FDIC saying "we will destroy you if we feel like it") the paperwork requirements and verifications increased dramatically. We've been seeing the ripple effect of Dodd-Frank for years, even if it's just in the form of a new culture at the FDIC. But you are right it's going to get worse.

Must've been the early Simpsons when they were funny, but I don't recall the line.

 

It was a "Treehouse of Horror" episode where Lisa and Bart were mutated into superheroes and, while Comic Book Guy was preparing to kill them, he was distracted by Xena, Warrior Princess telling him "Xena needs. . .xex!"

 

The show jumped the shark years ago.  I haven't watched a new episode since at least 2009.
