Good Morning Morons.  Today is Thursday, January 16, 2014.  On this sad day in 1919 the United States ratified the Eighteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, authorizing Prohibition in the United States one year later.   This was one of the biggest mistakes ever made in amendments to the Constitution.  Mainly because it was diametrically opposed to everything else in the Constitution.  It reflected the times which were in place at the beginning of progressivism and the collapse of freedom in the US due to same.

11 More fallout from that "deal" Republicans made that allowed Obama to stack the NLRB with more union goon lawyers.  The NLRB is supposed to be a neutral body that arbitrates labor disagreements and enforces labor law.  Instead under the corrupt Obama administration it has become an advocate for the unions and engages in lawfare to intimidate businesses.   Here they are once again going after Wal-Mart.

12 Remember the young girl in CA who was raped and the three animals who raped her video-taped it and she then committed suicide?  They got a really stiff sentence.   Two got 30 days in juvenile detention to serve on weekends.  One got 45 consecutive days in juvenile detention (he was 17).  Those three assholes are damned lucky that that was not my daughter.   And the judge who handed down these sentences should be removed from the bench and disbarred (among other things).

17 China holds record US debt screams the headline.  Not mentioned in the article is the fact that as a percentage of US debt it is low.  The US holds the overwhelming percentage of the US debt.  I suspect this was purposely leaked to try to quite the people warning of a Weimar collapse.  But if true, which I would not bet on, it does indicate that China is still buying US debt.  Hard to say that because China started selling off US debt several years ago so why should they start buying again?

I fully expected between  $150  and $200 for my two drugs since I have a new year and $5000 deductible.  I was told that I had read my plan in error.  When using generics (which I have been doing for years) there is no deductible and no copay.

Over the weekend I caught part of a documentary about the Japanese using British POWs to build the Burma railroad in WWII.  They were interviewing a Brit professor whose father was one of the POWs and they asked him if he had any animosity towards the Japanese for how they treated his father.  The guy said simply "No, I don't harbor any animosity towards today's Japanese for what happened during the war.  That generation of Japanese are long gone- that was then and this is now".

How refreshing...

Then again there's no money to be had in "guilting" the Japanese over WWII.

61: "I want a la carte TV choice. It's long past time for the viewers to be able to vote with their dollars. But Big Bird, I know."

I think the only way to get this is to find content providers that aren't owned or distributed by Viacom.

I read a cnet article a while back that said Viacom would not allow their bundled content to be severed by the satelite and cable companies.

If they allowed a la carte, they wouldn't be able to get any money out of all those shopping channels. Of course they claim that they keep the bundle requirement in order to support necessary channels that may not be quite as popular.

For the good of the people of course. Corporate welfare instead of public welfare.

78 Today's great hymn of the Faith, "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" which is based on Psalm 46 http://tinyurl.com/yhp24tm. Some background on Luther himself and his interest in music from a site called, "As we sail": "Martin Luther was born into a musical family. He loved to sing and became a very good flute player. He became an Augustinian monk and struggled to meet the demands of a holy God. This grew into a torment and it is said that "he fasted until his cheeks caved in." He confessed his sins for hours at a time. But he soon began to see that man could not, even at his best, satisfy the almighty God. Through his study of the Bible, he found that a person can only be saved through the blood of Jesus Christ; not through the purchase of indulgences, which were widely sold in the Catholic Church of his day. For purposes of discussion, he wrote a paper with ninety-five points and tacked it to the church door at Wittenberg. Those theses enraged the Catholic hierarchy, and thus started the Protestant Reformation. Luther became known in particular for three things: the doctrine of salvation by faith alone, the belief that Scripture should be translated into the people's language, and the birth of congregational singing. Working with skilled musicians, Luther also created new music for church choirs, organ, and other instruments during his life. " A MIghty fortress is based on Psalm 46 which talks about earthquakes felling mountains, cities being destroyed, nations being in an uproar, kingdoms crumbling. It talks about the end of the world itself. However, there is one particularly outstanding sentence, "Be still" and the focal point changes from outer turmoil to inner rest. This psalm was written as a hymn and proclaims a message people of faith need to hear. When problems threaten to overwhelm you bring them to God. Verse two refers to Jesus as Lord "Sabaoth"-which is a Hebrew word for "hosts" or "armies". This word is also used in other places including Romans 9:29 (?) and James 5:4. However, if we're always listening to the negative voices outside and around us we can't be still. The powers and principalities don't want us to be still to listen to the voice of God and meditate on God. They don't want us to prayerfully and trustfully submit ourselves to the Lord. A wonderful way to silence oneself is to do breath prayers. As you breath in say a phrase from Scripture such as "God is my refuge (changing the word "our: to make it more personal) and as you breathe out saying "A very present help in trouble". If you say that for a good long time it quiets your mind and heart. Clearly many people of faith have heard these suggestions before. I just know from spending too much time on here. ;^) that this place tends to focus us on our problems, not on God and God's presence. So, I'm off to follow that advice and spend a lot less time here today, :^) The stirring words and music of "A Mighty Fortress" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY4DCG-nFBI: God loves you. :^) Keep on praying!. May Grace and peace, help and healing, blessing and strength be with you and yours today.

I would submit that in both those cases your relatives' feelings were wholly justified- after all they were direct victims of violence and injustice.

I found it "refreshing" to see that this person was able to set aside animosity after being only one generation removed from it, especially considering that some in this country seem to be unable to move on after being five generations removed from slavery.

Then again there is little incentive for them to move on since not doing so is so lucrative.

Good news, every Juan!:

Immigrants facing deportation are increasingly likely to have their cases dismissed because of mitigating factors such as having U.S. citizen children, according to an analysis by researchers at Syracuse University.

In fiscal year 2013, 8.5% of cases closed in immigration court listed “prosecutorial discretion” as the reason for dismissal, compared with 4.7% the previous year. In some courts, at least 20% of case closures involved prosecutorial discretion. Of the roughly 35,000 cases closed in Los Angeles over the last two years, nearly 24% were prosecutorial discretion cases. The tallies do not include cases closed in earlier stages, before reaching the courts.

Meanwhile, our friend Mr. Policeman gets to blast away with impunity:

A Torrance police officer who mistakenly shot at a man during the massive manhunt for ex-LAPD officer Christopher Dorner will not face criminal charges, prosecutors said Wednesday. The Los Angeles County district attorneyÂ’s office declined to press charges against Officer Brian McGee, who opened fire at close-range last February on an innocent driver.

In a 16-page report explaining its decision, the district attorney’s office said McGee made a “reasonable mistake of fact” and the officer was “acting under an actual belief” that he needed to defend himself.

David Perdue, who was 38 at the time, was driving to pick up a friend and go surfing that morning when he was stopped by Torrance police and told to turn around. He'd driven less than 300 feet when another Torrance police unit mistook Perdue, who is a slight white man and was driving a Honda Highlander, for Dorner, who was black and described as driving a Nissan Titan.

After turning around, PerdueÂ’s truck was broadsided by another Torrance police cruiser, driven by McGee. The officer then shot at least three rounds at close-range into the PerdueÂ’s driver side window.

Yes, my wording there could have been better (need moar coffee)- perhaps "...they suffered violence and injustice..." would have been more accurate.

But my main point is that some people have been able to let go of their animosity after being only one generation removed from the violence and injustice while others have not been able to do so after five generations- and I suspect that money plays a large role in that inability.

A new amendment to California food safety law bans bare-handed food contact in restaurants. ItÂ’s a regulation that has received the scorn of chefs and diners alike.

This week, the Los Angeles Times smartly points to another area affected by the new law: bars. Since “food employees shall not contact exposed, ready-to-eat food with their bare hands,” bartenders must wear gloves or use tweezers or other utensils when touching ice, garnishes or similar ingredients that go directly in the drink

2. The guy wasn't shot!  So what does it have to do with officers discharging their weapons?  Nothing.   The guy was "allegedly" injured by the police using an assault vehicle.... are Torrance police vehicles black?

and 3.  If you are police participating in a manhunt, and a vehicle makes a sudden turnaround, moving in a  suspiciously erratic way, that's a bad thing to be doing  in front of police who are instructed that they  are hunting for a cop-killer.  Was it a mistake?  Obviously, but this isn't about the cop thinking the "slight white guy" was a big burly black guy.  It was a surfer dude, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Mistakes happen.

140 Good Morning, I had to get a new roof. They started working on it yesterday. Thank God IÂ’m going to work today. I woke up to, what sounded like an earthquake. It was sunny out here yesterday and they had blue tarps on 3/4 of the house. I felt like it was dark out, with a bluish haze. I can hear them bringing stuff back to finish today. IÂ’m so glad I am working today. It wasnÂ’t that bad when they started putting new roof on,it was taking the old one off that made all the noise.

145 OT - Prayer Request: Last night, I found out the 17 year old daughter of a friend of mine has been in a coma since 1/5/14 due to a car wreck just a couple of blocks from home. Her car slid through a stop sign and was t-boned by an SUV doing the speed limit of 40. The rescue folks told my friend when she walked up on the accident that it was a miracle she survived. This friend does most of her communication through FB and I don't get in there much. This young lady is a great kid--was wanting to be an EMT so she could help people--fabulous attitude, lovely manners, the whole package. At any rate, her Mother has requested the following: Please pray that "Chelsea wakes up for Momma by her 18th birthday." So please join me in praying for Chelsea.

I watched six seasons on demand after the 2012 season & only had to wait until I had time to watch the next episode instead of waiting a week or almost a year to watch the next episode. He also told me I would love Shameless on Showtime. I think I watched one episode & was not impressed. I put the television on Tuesday nigh when I came home after 11 & did not want to watch Bill O & I put on Showtime. Shameless was on & it was first episode of Season 4. I watched 4 of Season 1 yesterday. I really enjoyed it. It is hysterically funny.

155 149 -

You  can accept the  plaintiff's attorneys accounts of what happened, or you could use some common sense and try to imagine what the scene looked  like.

Yes, one  cop told him to turn around, while another cop, who had no idea he had been instructed to turn around, sees a  vehicle erratically driving AWAY from  the dragnet.

Bad communication, poor tactics on  the part of the police  (who were probably from multiple jurisdictions, so they might not even be communicating with each other),  and probably an overzealous cop who may very well have felt threatened.  With a cop killer on the loose.

Yes, it was a mistake, but again, this was a car accident.  The guy is claiming injury from a car accident.  The city probably  should pay his medical bills, but  this is hardly a case of rogue cops shooting innocent citizens because all cops are  gun-happy thugs.

211 Registered Voter, this is Army.  It seems to be more of a local command decision - make sure those guys are good before they go - kinda policy for the lower ranks.  I doubt it's official and written down, and if you really want to go right now - go with God son.

Seems to be some sort of relaxed duty with liberal leave, lots of time for transition classes, job help, got some guys making sure the paperwork is done, etc.

The guys being medically retired have a formal process - with some good people running it.

We've hired six guys in the last year, all of them had all their VA stuff done before they out processed.

That only started to change around 2007.  I retired in 2006 and I was on my own with the VA...and they told me so at TAP.  Took me a year for the VA to process my stuff and I submitted it within 30 days of retiring.

And concur with your assessment of the MEB process.  They are all about taking care of you even though you're broken.  I was going to MEB at West Point (it was nearest servicing facility) and ended up retiring.  They were great there.

Creative destruction is being actively inhibited.  Catastrophic failure is no longer allowed, faith in political interference in market dynamics means companies past a certain point are inured to the corrective feedback to prevent sub-optimal performance and prevent going obsolescent.  By any rational measure, it cannot be argued that the USPS and the GSEs are anything but abyssmal failures and likely inefficient in the pursuit of their objectives.

235 Oh, speaking of gun-grabbers... I about threw something at my TV last night. I've been watching Sleepy Hollow, and it's been fun (I watch it on PlayOn, so I get it a day late). So we're watching last night, and the heroes have to go to this "militia compound" to steal this week's MacGuffin. On their way, Crazy Sister Girl is talking about them, and how they've got guns, and blah blah. So Main Character Girl says to Ichabod, "What were your friends thinking with that whole right to bear arms thing?" Okay so far. She *IS* a cop in the NE (MA, I think). So I'm okay with that. Where it went off the rails was his response: The response should have been, "You do realize, Miss Mills, that all of our weapons and munitions- including the cannon- were privately owned? Of course we wanted a free people to have access to weaponry to fend off a tyrannical government; since that's what we were trying to do ourselves." No. His response (approximate quote): "Yes, many of us were afraid that guns in the hands of the citizenry might have nefarious side-effects." Fuck. That.

Several years ago, a Mafia hitman who was a particularly sadistic bastard wrote a book.  One of his assignments was for a capo whose daughter had been knocked up by a scumbag who skipped town.  The hitman caught up with the kid, took him to a cave, tied him down, depantsed him and set up a vidoe camera.

Then he left.

A week later he came back to a skeleton.  He took the video to the don.  Apparently the result was so gruesome, the hitman had to leave the room and vomit.  But the old man watched it all the way through.

They successfully (if modestly) re-launched K-Mart. So I wouldn't count them out quite yet. Of course, I don't think they should have gotten out of the catalog business- just moved it more online. They had some sweet contracts with UPS & FedEx.

"We're both failing, maybe if we team up we'll make it up in volume." I haven't been in a Kmart in years. Last time I was in one was to get a cheap dresser and night stand, again for the apartment (figuring we'd just pitch it and get an actual bedroom set when we got a house.) The wife and I were the only ones in there, it was creepy, like one of those survival movies. And it was the middle of a Saturday or Sunday so not exactly an odd time.

297 On the stupid Kerry statement my 2 cents

Nearly every act of terrorism committed in the world in the past 10 to 20 years has been committed by the Muzzie assholes.

The only ones I can think of other than them is the ELF bastards out West who are eco-terrorists and their actions have been very few and mostly against property.

So now its poverty the cause eh.  Since Democrats and other socialists are the main purveyors of poverty then does that mean that being a Democrat is the same as being a terrorist?

And where are the Republicans who will say all the baove?

301 Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) Channeling Breitbart at January 16, 2014 09:26 AM (nUH8H) Oddly around here they closed all the Sears Hardware stores. And I'm told that the "Sears Home Appliance" stores are actually just licensing the Sears name, but unaffiliated. (Longish story about that one, we bought our washer/dryer at one of those stores, and the wife's grandma is retired from sears with one of those lifetime discounts. We tried to use it but they said "no" because they aren't actually sears. Go figure.) I can't speak for your neck of the woods, but as I said, Kmart around here doesn't seem to be doing that well.

304 I went to a KMart last summer while on vacation in MA. We had an hour or so to burn before we could check in to our beach rental so we went there to pick up a few items. But it had a lot of good stuff cheap and the people working there were very nice (we had a pricing issue and the manager was great).

307 And where are the Republicans who will say all the baove? Worried that the Media will say mean things about them. It's really pathetic, but it goes back to Ace's Kimmel post yesterday- that so much of what people "know" isn't real; and they couldn't tell you how they "know" it in the first place. The same is true here. It is "accepted wisdom" that the root of all crime is poverty. It's not a big jump from there to "terrorism is caused by poverty."

In the Senate, his record of his constituent services has been lackluster, and most of his colleagues, despite their public support, are hard-pressed to list an accomplishment. Just last fall, a Boston TV reporter ambushed three congressmen with the question, name something John Kerry has accomplished in Congress. After a few nervous giggles, two could think of nothing, and a third mentioned a baseball field, and then misidentified Kerry as "Sen. Kennedy."

Many of his constituents see him in person only when he is cutting them in line - at an airport, a clam shack or the Registry of Motor Vehicles. One talk-show caller a few weeks back recalled standing behind a police barricade in 2002 as the Rolling Stones played the Orpheum Theater, a short limousine ride from Kerry's Louisburg Square mansion.

The caller, Jay, said he began heckling Kerry and his wife as they attempted to enter the theater. Finally, he said, the senator turned to him and asked him the eternal question.

"Do you know who I am?"

"Yeah," said Jay. "You're a gold-digger."

I haven't bought so much as a pack of gum there since February. (In fact, Schnucks wouldn't even disclose it for a while, I originally found out when my dad called saying all his bank's active cards had been hit. They only have like 5, and the common denominator was Schnucks. They didn't come clean for another 6 weeks, and even then they used PR flacks to keep in on Page 6 of the news even though 2.4 million people had been affected.)
