16 California Gov. Jerry Brown is scrambling to keep a pricey high-speed train project from being derailed by raiding millions of dollars from the state's cap-and-trade program -- in what critics are calling a "desperate" ploy to save the beleaguered plan.

The state's cap-and-trade program puts a cap on greenhouse gas emissions, but lets companies buy "allowances" to pollute more. In it, the Golden State governor sees a funding source that could help resurrect one of the state's most ambitious, and controversial, projects -- a $68 billion, 500-mile rail line from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

I have no college degree or any particular significant skills. My finances make the Federal budget look balanced. I hold eclectic positions that make me a party of one, unacceptable to left, right, or any other dimension. I'm unpersonable, easily confused, and a poor public speaker. Someone here once said, I don't just have skeletons in my closet; my closet is made of skeletons! Yeah, mine too. DESPITE these qualifications, I would like to announce that I am not running for Dr. Coburn's Senate seat. 80 Speaking of food, I watched some italian cooking show. In Carrerra, they have large marble vats that they fill with salt, rosemary, garlic, 15 secret spices, and lard. What they called lard looked like slabs of pig fat. They allow it to cure for a minimum of 6 months. They sliced it into paper thin strips and served it on slices of italian bread with sliced onions and chopped tomatoes. It looked very good. My description does not do it justice. Today we scorn fat but it was a sought after and necessary food for most people. And it taste good. Unmarbled meat tastes like crap.

90 On the McDs story that Vic posted.

I do quite a bit of traveling. About any place I go to, especially for breakfast, you have a group of locals sitting at tables. The McDs, Paneras, local diner (everyone turns to look when a newby comes in) or what have you. The manager or waitresses know them all. They have their papers spread out. The departure of moderate former Lt. Gov. 109 Today's great hymn of the faith-"Close to Thee" By Fanny Crosby (1820-1915) Fanny Crosby was probably the most prolific hymnist in history. Though blinded by an incompetent doctor at six weeks of age, she wrote over 8,000 hymns. About her blindness, she said: It seemed intended by the blessed providence of God that I should be blind all my life, and I thank him for the dispensation. If perfect earthly sight were offered me tomorrow I would not accept it. I might not have sung hymns to the praise of God if I had been distracted by the beautiful and interesting things about me. Writers about Fanny Crosby tended to sentimentalize Crosby but she had a hard life. Besides the blindness, she was often chronically short of money which exacerbated tensions between she and her husband who didn't like the fact that she was better known than he was, tensions which were not lessened by the fact that their one child died of a a crib death: As this wonderful site , (David's hymn blog) comments: http://drhamrick.blogspot.com/2011/12/close-to-thee.html "The 1870 U.S. Census shows that she and her husband were then living in a boarding house in the middle of Manhattan's 8th Ward. Today, this is the exclusive SoHo district, but back then it was a poor working-class neighborhood just a few blocks from the red-light district off Broadway. By contrast, Crosby's friend Phoebe Knapp Palmer (composer of "Blessed assurance") lived in an urban mansion in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, then a prestigious enclave of wealthy industrialists. Despite their difficult financial circumstances, Fanny seemed always to keep in mind that others were more in need. When the couple gave lecture-recitals to raise money, they routinely donated half the proceedings to the poor. Beginning in the late 1860s, Fanny worked with rescue missions in some of the toughest New York neighborhoods, speaking and counseling whenever she could. And when friends took it upon themselves to organize activities to raise funds for Crosby in her elderly years, her reaction was always to insist that she was not in need.("Crosby," Wikipedia)" May you feel the Lord's love presence today, and you know, the more time we spend with him the more we're likely to feel it. :^) The hymn: http://tinyurl.com/lufluwn

I am fascinated with our evolving standards of beauty, however.  Not necessarily some of the universal qualities we look for, like symmetrical features, "almond" eyes, straight and white smiles, but  the more superficial, such as hair styles, makeup and clothing, and even the way women will pose or the facial  expressions they make.

Personally, I've gotten to the point where the modern standards do not impress me much.  I find myself seeing pics of cheerleaders, like the ones posted here on game day threads, or even the link someone posted yesterday to the supposedly 30 hottest cheerleaders in the NFL, and I find myself rather unimpressed.  Lots of times I'm thinking "sure, she's dolled up, I wonder what she actually looks like though, without the heap of makeup she's wearing."

In brief, the new book, The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of, takes place in 1917, during the filming of Bara's (now lost) Cleopatra.  During a PR event, a starlet turns up dead, which leads to an old friend of Bara's - now a gossip columnist - to begin asking uncomfortable questions.

There's also an Egyptian cult and a series of ritual deaths, with a final scene inside the abandoned set of Intolerance  (http://tinyurl.com/mo3lmpn) that, if I can write what I see in my head, will blow your socks off.

I'm hoping for a late spring / early summer release through Amazon.

133 81. "Maryland Democrat Chris Van Holland charged on Larry OÂ’ConnorÂ’s morning radio show in D.C. that the GOP negotiators came up with the cut to career military retirement in order to protect agriculture subsidies." "Agriculture" became Monsanto long ago. No point in subsidizing the Agent Orange industry that now chemically/genetically alters all life on earth. Rather, starve the corporations of tax funds. Fuck fascism. As for any career military Brass (ex: above the rank of Captain/Army), they've fingers in lobbying pots already and corporate executive positions already upon retirement. Once a service personnel member rises above a certain rank, it is never their literal neck on the line getting shot down, blasted to pieces in combat. But for the injured and permanently disabled military personnel, to fail our contractual agreement upon the time of their signing on to serve our nation, NEVER go there. To think that Americans, in becoming disillusioned with the Patriotic War meme, disinterested in the never ending wars because "what difference does anything make?" has worn sensibility down, to take frustration out on disabled veterans, even if only by ignoring our promises to them when they volunteered to protect us, NEVER go there. And for the GI Bill, should our returning veterans fulfilling tours of duty go to school and be upwardly mobile (as after WWII), good. It made all the difference in the world to my father, and hence all our family since WWII.

Here's a cute story, h/t Mike Hendrix at Cold Fury:

On February 6, Pope FrancisÂ’s Harley-Davidson motorcycle, autographed by the pope himself, will be put up for auction through the Bonhams auction house at the Grand Palais, Paris.

Pope Francis received two motorcycles and a leather jacket in June when motorcyclists came to Rome in celebration of Harley DavidsonÂ’s 110th birthday. The bike being auctioned is expected to fetch between $16,000 and $20,000, and proceeds from the sale will go to a Catholic charity, Caritas Roma, which plans to use the funds to renovate a soup kitchen and homeless hostel at RomeÂ’s Termini railroad station.

I'd prefer a Benedict HD myself, but a popecycle would be pretty cool to ride, wouldn't it?

Local Fox station had Wallace on and they were discussing that the SCOAMF is supposed to speak today on the massive NSA collection of info. I hope he speaks early so Rush can tell us details. I do mind them taking 200 million text messages per day. I know itÂ’s yesterdayÂ’s news. I have been reducing emails, phone calls, unless person IÂ’m speaking with is too far away to have face to face conversation. I wonder what the terrorists are doing? Does anyone know, besides the NSA? My boss told me in 2000 or 2001 never to write something in an email that you donÂ’t want anyone else to read & I have done that. I donÂ’t like them collecting every bit of metadata on American citizens. I thought Patriot Act was to monitor calls to Yemen and other ME hotspots.

Sarah Palin basically ran in AK as a reformer who would clean up the worst abuses of the Young-Murkowski axis.

She wasn't in the Governor's office for long enough to get that done. McCain's pick of her for the national ticket robbed the state level reforms of momentum, and that also scared the living shit out of the Y-M corruptocrat bloc, fearing that Sarah in D.C. might bring federal probes down upon their cozy little racket.

So by the time that SP got back to Alaska in the aftermath of the McCain flameout, EVERYONE had the long knives out for her. 248 "Since I don't pay attention to Alaskan politics, all I know is she claimed to have faith in her Lt. Governor, so that when she stepped down he would carry on the work. Was she wrong?"

Yes.

The initial momentum for reform had faded by the time he stepped in. Due to Sarah's absence and distraction at a key moment.

And, frankly, after watching the brutal way in which Palin was taken down upon her return to AK, where no one moved to help her, who *would* want to volunteer to pick up her fallen torch?

Cleaning up a corrupt state is one of those "if you strike at the king, strike to kill" situations. Can't slack even for one nanosecond. It would have been an interesting alternate history if SP had never been picked for the national ticket, whether she would have had the ability to see through the reform effort to effect lasting positive change. My guess would be, unfortunately, probably not.

Any state where a successful write-in campaign can be run by someone like Lisa Morecokeski -- who is so crooked she has to walk down stairs sideways -- is probably beyond any hope of ever being successfully reformed.

I think Mitt Romeny really wanted it. I just think that the 'gentleman' is so deeply ingrained in his character that he truly believed he could take the high road and accomplish it.

At some point, some enterprising group of people (I doubt it will be anyone inside the GOP) will figure out that there is a great deal of political  capital to be gained from  merely speaking the truth. Naturally, the Leftards'  heads will start a'splodin' about three seconds later, but there's another opportunity to advance the agenda and point out   the  Left's lies at the same time.

We've seen the past two Pubbie candidates tiptoe around the truth, and where did it get us? There is real damage being  done to the country under this clown car of an administration, damage that can be fixed: we   can have a robust economy, the rule of law and freedom once again, but  someone has to get the ball rolling on our side first.

Alas, this is just another fun thing to ponder after a couple of Guinnii...

The exhibit, entitled “People, Book, Land – The 3,500 Year Relationship of the Jewish People and the Land of Israel," was created jointly by the Jewish human rights group the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, and was scheduled to open Jan. 20 at UNESCO's Paris headquarters. But less than a week before it was to open, UNESCO informed the SWC is was canceling it because the Arab League had claimed the exhibit “could create potential obstacles related to the peace process in the Middle East,” the U.S.-based Jewish newspaper The Algemeiner reported. 253 178. "It would be a relief to watch the federal bastards destroy themselves, to dissipate, remove themselves." I agree with the conclusion that Washington DC will NEVER of itself rescind the authoritarian powers that Washingtonians usurped. Even WERE the American citizenry to be liberated from the self-appointed sheeple-elected overlords, the States must already be functional, functioning. Not simply to pick up loose ends. But to throw off the shackles that authoritarians have forged and chained us all to, "for our own good, for the children," etc. Don't pray for hell on earth because you think it will be a relief compared to our current circumstances. Remember the prayer coming from the belly of the whale, "They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy." I'd rather Americans take Jonah's advice preached to the greatest civilization of the era (given the table of nations, Genesis 10. Nimrod the son of Cush, the son of Ham, the son of Noah). http://tinyurl.com/bdgx8ym If the great Nineveh's King and people chose to reassess themselves, deciding "Let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands." Then as they did repent of missing the mark of God's law (Golden Rule), we can, as well. Otherwise, note well the much lauded vane deconstruction, "progress" or "evolution" of the human mind dissolve the inner good sense with which we're born. SOVEREIGN STATES RIGHTS The framework supporting each sovereign citizen comprising our Constitutional Republic. /To hell with Sherman. And to those still stuck on the horrid lie that the North fought a humanitarian war against the South in order to end slavery, explain why the Union Army went on to annihilate the native American tribes.

281 "U.S. Air Force Yanks Nuclear Clearances After Cheating On Exam Found"

There is a significant element of the white-scarf pilot cadre within USAF who have *never* been fond of the ballistic missile force.

They fought the concept from the start. Missiles? Ridiculous! Bombers were the way to go. Bombers require *pilots*.

Except even hardened old SAC chiefs like LeMay and Power finally realized that bombers alone didn't present an adequate deterrent against the Soviets, and so they took the ICBM force into SAC and drilled it to the same level of obsessive perfection as they had the bomber crews. A temporary truce between the pilots and the missileers.

But, times change. The Cold War ended. The Soviets went away. SAC was scrapped. The ICBM force suddenly wasn't all that important for deterrence any longer. And the white-scarf boys found themselves with a rapidly shrinking pool of budget dollars, and a shit-ton of aging aircraft needing replacement.

It was pretty obvious that the missileers were going to get beaten like red-headed stepchildren, and that's what has happened.

311 The Samaritans are the descendants of Israel who never left Israel. The Jews broke away from Israel and created their own Kingdom of Judah which warred incessantly against Israel for domination. The Jews were conquered by many great civilizations, and the "most beautiful and most adept" of the royal Jewish children taken into "captivity" to serve the conquering Kings/Emperors. When the Persian Cyrus not only freed the Jews from Babylonian captivity, but paid their way home AND funded the rebuilding of their Temple, the Jews returned to Jerusalem, not to be ousted again until they rebelled against Rome and were destroyed and fled to other civilizations. It is another slam against the Samaritan Israelis for the Ashkenazy (Western European majority German speaking) Jews to call themselves Israelis, usurping the common progenitor's name while denying the literal Israeli descendants' legitimate Identity. It doesn't matter to me, one way or the other, except to take note. What will be, will be. And so far as Identity matters in Central Asia (or any region/globe), there it is. The ball of wax. Race relations. Ideological Warfare. Which "deserve" being top dog. The indigenous or the emigrants. The old, The new. Both. Neither. Fusion. Nothing. Everything.

Hopefully you and your buxom bride will deeply enjoy the Obamacare marriage tax penalty together for many years yet to come.

317 At this point ,I would run towards a nuclear blast. Upon notification of a nuclear attack, I can be found in the back yard of Casa Backwardio, mowing a bullseye. **** If I'm within 75-100 miles of an attack, I'd just as soon be at the center of it. And, here in Jax, I'm sure I am.

318 In my part of the country, with the Arctic temps, you can't work cement until about March. But things *have* been picking up a little -- for all the worst reasons. Read an article couple days ago that the average down payment was now less then 5%. It's because it's harder to get a CONV loan than an FHA. And FHA loans are not the same as those "sub-prime" loans. Which is just a round-about way of saying that I'm not as concerned about the average down-payment. OTOH, I AM concerned that people didn't learn the right lesson (as it applies to home purchasers) from the 2008 collapse- buy less than the mortgage-guy says you can afford. I'm afraid we're setting ourselves up for something very similar- if people are buying as much as they can now, what happens when interest rates go up? Even if they get a 30 yr fixed, those Credit Cards aren't fixed rate... it'll be real easy to fall back into the same hole we were in just 5 years ago...

319 What is it? It requires registration. Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at January 17, 2014 08:57 AM (DmNpO) It's a compilation of video lockers. Just register. I believe all it requires is a moniker and email address to confirm.

323 "I hope that booze-sodden nickelfucker is at the end position of a human centipede in hell with Teddy and Stalin." -Poppins I apparently have some mental discipline for not thinking about certain things, like the name of Lennon's assassin.... or that movie about which I first heard relatively recently; nearly made me physically ill, but like everything, even 9/11, eventually the impact lessens. Even though this was excellent, MPPPPPP, I could still gladly go the rest of my days without having that particular horrific imagery recalled. One trick to such mental discipline- just go on, don't think about it, or dwell on it, much less write about it... as I just did.

325 Nearsider @292: Since I'm in Philly, we're getting a quadruple dose of Cheesemania. This could be my ultimate Princess Leia triumph, or a deal-breaking mistake. You cannot win if you do not whey.

326 Sochi is famous for it's gay clubs. What Russia doesn't allow are gay pride parades and disseminating info to minors. Since, everyone has access to the internet, I don't see how it is a problem. Gay activists want western discrimination law in Russia. It's not going to happen.

329 Jeff Zucker's CNN morning show hits new low:

Nielsen ratings show “New Day” — hosted by Chris Cuomo, Kate Bolduan and Michaela Pereira — pulled an average of 389,000 viewers in its first full month in July, but declined steadily to just 255,000 viewers by December.

Cheer up Jeffy, there's only one way you can go from here. Further down

330 PabloD?

Best wishes. I was married for 7 years to the late Miss Helen. 25 to Miss Emily. There were no better friends in the world. And yes, there were times we wanted to kill each other- but when the World came a'callin' we faced it united....

Do that and you can't do wrong.

331 Noted in passing, one last time. Obits for "The Professor" are full of TV-grade wit.

Lt Russell Johnson USAAC flew 44 missions in the Pacific as a bombardier in B-25's. Shot down, ditched at sea. Air Medal, Purple Heart.

332 Didn't notice that. But now every time he does and it annoys me I will blame you for pointing it out! Posted by: RWC Heh, sorry. It's obviously intended as "yeah, about that." Don't blame me. He's doing it. Romney did that occasional little smacking sound, you know, like when you open your mouth. Things like that can be disproportionately distracting once you pick up on them. Maybe Sasse can change the habit. When Henry Bellmon was running for Gov of Okla, his wife sewed his coat pockets closed to stop his nervous habit of sticking his hands in them. My Mom recalls watching him fumble the first time he figured out what his wife had done!

333 Stupid question, since I'm a late adopter of podcasts--are they archived somewhere? I see the 10 most recent on iTunes, but are the older ones still available?

1,600 page spending bill that no one read. AND, I just heard that there was an amendment in the bill to defund the IRS. Boehner nixed it.

The Republican party is now an enemy of the people, as much as the Democrats.

The Democrats are the terrorists. The Republicans are the ones passing out the candy and cheering them on.

336 Recommendation for the burning times for someone with less scruples than me: whore timeshares. Get a partner, share the risks/protection, and the profits. I'd recommend charging a bottle of liquor and a box of bullets per session.
