Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes.

No story today, and probably not for the week.  Why?  Two reasons:

1.  I'm sick. And no, not hung over, sick.  Whatever bronchitis / flu crap has been floating around finally got me.  I couldn't sleep all this weekend and now I'm waiting for the boss to come in so I can ask to go home.

2.  First draft of the new Theda Bara book was finished at 1.18pm yesterday.  Now it's all just backfill.  I need to put the old brain in neutral for a while.

50 I spend not a great amount of time reading comments from other sites.
Typically I read the ones from news magazines and newspapers.

And it's  not hard to sense the pulse of commenters, as well as the ratio of liberal and conservative comments.

Unless it's the NYT's, it seems that Obama supporters are fleeing the comment sections just about everywhere you look.
Can't speak for Kos and DU, as I refuse to wade into those swamps, but they are not representative of general comment populations.

55 "I'm sick. And no, not hung over, sick. Whatever bronchitis / flu crap has been floating around finally got me."

The dominant flu this season is the H1N1 strain. Swine flu.

It's a nasty business. If you look up the CDC morbidity/mortality reports, you will learn that it's killing more people than is usually the case for seasonal flu, and it is hitting earlier.

I had it during its last big season five years ago. (There hasn't been a major outbreak from then till now.) It was a bitch. I was ill for months, really badly so, to the point where I could barely even accomplish ordinary life maintenance at times, e.g., dressing and feeding myself. Relapsed repeatedly. And I'm someone in absolutely excellent baseline health!

This year's vaccine strain selection does include H1N1. I don't know to what extent it may confer immunity to what's actually circulating. The medical system is still administering and encouraging the vaccine. Nota bene.

If momentum can ever seriously be built up for that, I'm pulling up stakes and getting my ass to Texas as fast as I can.

Hell, if it even looks as though there's a _chance_ of building up momentum, I'll show up there, ready to stake my life, my fortune, and my sacred honor (as some dead old white guys once put it).

But, um, is it really feasible? In a state where a transparent phony like Abortion Barbie can actually pull forty percent plus in the polls?

I know she is horribly unlikely to get elected with those numbers unless Abbott pulls a Clayton Williams and gaffes massively about rape (funny how Republican candidates have been exploding and sinking on that mine for a long time now).

Merely for her to poll that high on the basis of one (1) obviously orchestrated filibuster and a nondescript legislative career seems not to be a good omen for TX.

88 "Kos is way down on number of commenters. A couple years ago, a front-page story would easily have hundreds of comments. Now? most only have 30 or 40."

A few years ago, back when his site was riding high on page views and generating lots of ad revenue, Moulitsas bought himself a nice house here in the SF Bay Area.

It's longstanding liberal doctrine that the stand-alone single-family home is a wicked tool of Satan and must be extirpated by any means necessary, using the power of government to force everyone to live in high-density insect hives instead.

So of course what Kos bought for himself was a stand-alone single-family home.

Fen's Law again. The left really don't believe any of the things that they so earnestly lecture the rest of us about.

Oh, and Brad DeLong, another member of the Obama-rimjobbing blogger left who also lives here in the Bay Area, did the same thing that Kos did, and brags about his nice domicile on his blog.

90 But, um, is it really feasible? In a state where a transparent phony like Abortion Barbie can actually pull forty percent plus in the polls? I know she is horribly unlikely to get elected with those numbers unless Abbott pulls a Clayton Williams and gaffes massively about rape (funny how Republican candidates have been exploding and sinking on that mine for a long time now). Merely for her to poll that high on the basis of one (1) obviously orchestrated filibuster and a nondescript legislative career seems not to be a good omen for TX. Posted by: torquewrench at January 20, 2014 08:13 AM (gqT4g) Remember, if it ever came about millions of those rats would be desperate to get aboard the sinking ship, while millions more like you (myself amongst them) would be headed for the life raft. I think the ideological balance in the Lone Star Republic would be just fine.

Absolutely amazing. And precisely the sort of cynical gaming of the system I predicted was going to become commonplace when that idiot Bush teamed up with Ted Kennedy (!) to pass No Child Left Behind.

Also on the cynical gaming of NCLB, Vic upthread alluded to how "Democrat controlled schools in Philly are rife with cheating." Yep.

Add to that the massive criminal case down in Atlanta. Dozens of AfAm school teachers and principals in the dock for doctoring test scores.

105 92 Posted by: Harrison Bergeron at January 20, 2014 08:26 AM (JQuNB) Walter Williams is terrific. The problem is is that the left will never agree to an amicable divorce because their half of the country would rapidly turn into a large version of Detroit. This has already happened in Zimbabwe, where desperate people and criminals flee to South Africa and pillage that country (which is now on the fast track to turning into its northern neighbor now that Mandela is gone). Which brings me to a conundrum that has me stymied. In order to restore a republic whose principles are freedom and the rule of law, we will have to resort to extreme measures and the abandonment of our principles for some period of time in order to get us back to normal. And even then, evil never rests as my sainted mother always said. I truly hate the left because they are forcing us into a corner and will make us do things that we find abhorrent. May they all go straight to Hell.

147 That makes sense. I say tell the chronically unemployed, "Here's a job. Take it or we cut off unemployment." Speaking as one who has one of those "chronically unemployed" living in his house- it's not always that easy. Why hire someone for $7.25/hr when you can get someone of other-than-legal status to do it for $5.00? Further, the longer you're unemployed, the less employable you become. It becomes a lethal spiral. Now, if someone *is* turning down jobs, that can actually have their unemployment taken away. In TX you get something like 4 weeks to look for "comparable work" and then it goes down from there. After a couple of months, if you turn down *any* job, you're considered voluntarily unemployed, and unemployment stops.

Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) Ah, F It. at January 20, 2014 09:01 AM (PYAXX) I'm not saying anyone turned down jobs. I'm saying that we should be looking at getting those unemployed at least somewhat back to work before we start importing more foreign workers. Recently, CNN ran a piece about how the evil Republicans were trying to starve poor folks by not extending UE benefits. They interviewed a woman who was a chemist and whose benefits were set to run out. She made the statement, "They just don't understand how hard it is to find a job IN MY FIELD." Not any job; a job in her field. She felt entitled to that, and we, the taxpayers, should support her until she got what she was entitled to. That's the mentality I object to. I share an office with a guy (a Gen Y/Millenial cusp guy) who constantly complains about how they don't pay him enough to do all the things they ask him to do. His work history indicates that this is the norm for him. He stays somewhere for a while then decides he deserves better and leaves. He will never be happy until someone pays him what he thinks he's worth to do less and less. That thought process is becoming more and more prevalent.
