Happy Tuesday.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear argument on whether non-union public employees can be forced to pay union dues. It's kinduva big deal. (I have no idea if argument is being postponed because of the anticipated weather in D.C. OPM says the government is closed.)

NRO's Kevin D. Williams on the working rich is a good read.

Classic. ESA's Rosetta spacecraft wakes after three years of energy-saving mode during travel to comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, tweets: "Hello, world!"

If you haven't listened to it yet, last week's podcast with Washington Examiner's Tim Carney had a thoughtful discussion of the GOP's internecine conflict. Also, keep those Ask the Blog questions coming.

1 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Tuesday, January 21, 2014.  On this day in 1950 Alger Hiss was found guilty of perjury.  In actuality he was one of the many Soviet spies who saturated the state department.  The records regarding the HUAC were sealed and in 1976 another 50 years were added to the sealing.

17 I just love the way The Hill phrases this BS article about a SCOTUS case that is coming up.

[IOn Tuesday, the high court will hear oral arguments in Harris V. Quinn, a case that could upend agreements with state governments that [u]allow taxpayer-funded home-care workers to unionize.

That is the most misleading POS I have seen in a long time.   This case hinges around an IL union sweetheart law pushed in by the convicted criminal ex-gov Blogobitch.   It forces home healthcare workers, including family members, to join SEIU and pay dues.  So mom, if your kid gets sick and you take care of him with love and chicken soup you automatically are a member of SEIU and must pay dues.  Blogo should have gotten life.

19 More racist bull shit from black activists who threaten violence on campus.  This one at the liberal University of Michigan who have already given indications that they will cave under threat.

“If negotiations are not complete we will be forced to do more, beginning to increase valiantly our activism for social progress and take physical actions on the University of Michigan’s campus,” said senior Shayla Scales to a group of students gathered on campus, according to the Ann Arbor News.

So what do these worthless shits want?

The seven demands, read aloud by an activist associated with the union after a speech by entertainer and activist Harry Belafonte, included calls for more control over the Black Student UnionÂ’s budget, more housing for lower-income students, a new multicultural student center, the requirement of classes teaching all students about the historical treatment of minorities, access to emergency scholarships for minority students, increased exposure to library materials and a requirement that 10 percent of the campus be represented by black students.

More free shit and force other students to pay money to go to even more university PC indoctrination classes.  I say FK them and expel them but the odds of that happening are even less than me winning the powerball lottery when I haven't bought a ticket.

29 The Supreme Court is to hear a case on the latest example of jackpot lawfare enabled by liberal courts and the BS Violence Against Women Act.   This one involves a poor woman who was serially raped as a child and photographed (by her uncle).  A man who has no relationship to her at all was convicted of possession of child pornography; two of the pictures were of the victim here.

Lawyers are seeking $3.36M based on a BS estimate by a "child psychologist".  Most likely the convicted "viewer" in this case has deep pockets and the uncle has nothing.  So not only is it a BS ruling but our old buddy joint and several liability is at work as well.   I have no sympathy for people who abuse children and the "uncle" in this case should have been publicly flogged with a snake whip and sentence to life in prison (if not executed).  But the appeals court in this case which overturned years of precedent (so much for Stare Decisis) is flat wrong.

38 Obama just told everyone that he got elected because he's "black". Doug Williams was a Super Bowl MVP. Did people like him because he was a good quarterback and at the same time dislike him because he was black? Bad analogy, because he was an MVP. Obama is a 3rd string JV PAT holder. And he's terrible to boot. So we're supposed to believe that he was elected because he was going to be good, but then his blackness took his approval from 70 to 38? Why do the 32% (who are all white) now think he's a plug. Did they just realize he's black? But maybe they voted for him because he was black, and realized that skin color is not a great criterion for voting. So Obama is right. Everything about him is based on skin color. Everything. He is a skin. He is nothing else. And he just told you.

50 Happy Tuesday to you Gabriel and God bless you and all here: Words of the Saints-which St Paul defines as believers in and followers of Christ “I will stay in prison till the moss grows on my eye lids rather than disobey God.” ― John Bunyan (1628-1688( Bunyan, A Christian writer and preacher, was born at Harrowden (one mile south-east of Bedford), in England. He wrote The Pilgrim's Progress, arguably the most famous published Christian allegory. In 1658 Bunyan was indicted for preaching without a licence. He continued, however, and did not suffer imprisonment till November 1660, when he was taken to the county gaol in Silver Street, Bedford. There he was confined at first for three months, but on his refusing to conform or to desist from preaching, his confinement was extended for a period of nearly 12 years (with the exception of a few weeks in 1666). It was during this time that he completed his allegorical novel: The Pilgrim's Progress. [It is more likely that he commenced this work during the second and shorter imprisonment of 1675 referred to below.] He was released in January 1672, when Charles II issued the Declaration of Religious Indulgence. Prayer is a sincere, sensible, affectionate pouring out of the heart or soul to God, through Christ, in the strength and assistance of the Holy Spirit, for such things as God has promised, or according to His Word, for the good of the church, with submission in faith to the will of God. John Bunyan 1st Thessalonians 5:17-18 17 aPray without ceasing. 18 In every thing give athanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

74 Hopeful prayer fior the day: "Eternal God, in whom compassion is whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible. look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to your Holy Will which is love and mercy itself." Divine Mercy prayer of Saint Faustina 1905 - 1938 Beatified By: Pope John Paul II Canonized By: Pope John Paul II Saint Faustina was born Helena Kowalska in a small village west of Lodz, Poland on August 25, 1905. She was the third of ten children. When she was almost twenty, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, whose members devote themselves to the care and education of troubled young women. The following year she received her religious habit and was given the name Sister Maria Faustina, to which she added, "of the Most Blessed Sacrament", as was permitted by her congregation's custom. In the 1930's, Sister Faustina received from the Lord a message of mercy that she was told to spread throughout the world. She was asked to become the apostle and secretary of God's mercy, a model of how to be merciful to others, and an instrument for reemphasizing God's plan of mercy for the world. A short trailer for a multi media show on St Faustina from St Luke Productions which is taking the show to RC dioceses in the West and Midwest. http://tinyurl.com/pk7kwem And once again, I am not employed by this group in any capacity. I just like inspiring religious drama and in the past have started and directed a Christian drama group. I also think Faustina is cool!

77 Syria accused of "systematically" killing 11,000 detainees. How is this any different than just regularly killing them? I would presume it means lining up prisoners for cold-blooded slaughter v killed in heat of battle. I've no love for murderous thugs regardless of belief or motivation, and in the whole history of warfare, I'd figure that's been more often the case than not, taking warriors prisoners (other than as slaves) being a modern civilized idea, one which presents bigger problems with cult fanatics than, say, ordinary German POWs. Detention, like Guantanamo, presents big problems (although letting them go is the biggest), but I still like to pretend we prefer justice by law to summary slaughter.

I think what vic is concerned about its because of the potential for misapplication to other situations that aren't so clear cut.

Similar to the property seizures starting out as only against those they knew where drug dealers or where convicted.

Then they started seizing property of people who were relatives but took no part and/or weren't charged with a crime.

Now we're at a point where the police seize the property of totally innocent people because the process of regaining ones property usually far exceeds the value of the property.

They're using the threat of the PROCESS to subdue honest citizens from fighting legalized theft.

The police should start a gang. they extort money, assault citizens and kill the innocent.

Oh. Wait.

That's yet another reason the US Constitution is such a remarkable document as, even after 200+ years, people that understand English can read the original text and appreciate what the Founders were trying to do.  Whereas the lawyers and pols have spawned thousands upon thousands of pages of legislation and regulation to undo what the Constitution plainly says.

Doug Williams was one of the three mediocre quarterbacks that Joe Gibbs won a Super Bowl with.  Unlike most of the other head coaches which are successful at the highest level, Gibbs relatively de-emphasized the QB position and generally all they had to do was not screw things up.  Before he went to Williams, he'd given the hapless Jay Schroeder enough rope to circle the globe twice before benching him, after which he sent him to the Raidazz where Alice Davis loved signal callers with cannons for arms and shit for brains.

Actually this act does NOTHING for those poor enough to get subsidies.

Most all those who qualify for subsidies would qualify for Medicaid or other assistance previous to this act.

What this does (and was meant to do) was bring the folks who could afford their own insurance under control of the government (and make a windfall for the Insurance companies) and to let employers drop their plans so they can save that money as profit while being protected from the anger and lawsuits of their employees. AND bring those employees under the control of the government and a windfall for the Insurance companies.

Remember Hillary's plan was also all about Insurance and NOT about Health Care.

That's NEVER been the issue.

Now look up on Google the states that harbor the largest number of Insurance companies. Go ahead see where they're located.

143 In most states, if you have bills that exceed a certain percentage of your income (don't remember the cutoff) you will have the rest of your medical bills paid by the state.

it's to aid people when they have a catastrophic event that would wipe them out or force them into bankruptcy.

And either way. This was never about helping poor people.

That's just BS. It's the Queen that you can never find after you place your bet.

Obama couldn't care less about poor people, blacks, hispanics whatever.

His Masters are determined to undermine the US as a World power, Ruin it's infrastructure and financial system so that other countries can seize control and use that power for their ends and to threaten other countries as an example of what they can do.

151 The first preference cascade may come because of the ACA.

I'm betting that except for those on or being enrolled in Medicare/Medicaid, people will not sign up this year and perhaps not next year.

Even the Media can't hide what's going on. That's been Obama's only thing that's kept him from being held accountable; the media not covering or obfuscating the problems.

Notice we don't hear a lot on the nets about the unemployed these days? Not like they used to.

They can't hide this because everyone knows someone who's tried to sign up and found out what the cost will be. Plus their are the problems with the website which are being reported in other venues because of the website and it's being hacked.

And I think even the Media is becoming a bit bored with the arrogance, mendacity and outright stupidity of Obama.

Largest problem is that the door leads to a back porch on second floor and there is no insulation in paneling in house. Last year I had someone from MA Saves to help me and I and to do some things, prove that roof wasnÂ’t leaking, order carbon tester, etc. Roof wasnÂ’t leaking in May and I have second & third floor to myself. How many rooms can one person use? I called to tell man roof was fine & he looked in file and said I had to fix ceiling & wall because of mold. My older brother used to be able to do that but heÂ’s got a bad shoulder & canÂ’t keep it up for more than a few seconds. He & my next door neighbor fixed it. Then we found out ceiling was wet again. I had new roof put on last week. I want my FREE 75% off of insulation up to $2,000 per unit. Two apartments and that will help. I had man here 1/31/2013. I hope he doesnÂ’t have to come here again. Everything on list is done except for carbon monitor. IÂ’ll order from HD one day this week.

Goodell is just like the JEF in that he wants to "fundamentally transform" the game which, as a pudgy unathletic fuck, he was probably the last person chosen in neighborhood teams, assuming he ever played the game at all.  Missed extra points, while rare, are an essential part of the game that coaches have to deal with in the course of overseeing the game.  Maybe he should concentrate on making rules which are easy for the zebras to get right, which they didn't do often this season.

The conversion (or try) is among the oldest parts of football, dating all the way back to the sport's rugby roots. But the game has changed over time and the emphasis has shifted from the subsequent kick, which used to be worth more, to the touchdown. Remember this, too. The forward pass was once just an intriguing idea in football. That's caught on fairly well."

Isn't Night of A Thousand Vaginas just another name for Prom Night?

"Night the Vagina is used a Thousand Times" is Homecoming.

Peter Sellers was supposed to star in The Five Thousand Vaginas of Dr. T, but the deal fell through.

213 177 Actually it's coming down pretty good here in below the GW Bridge and it is sticking Ahhh, someone just shook the BWI snowglobe becuase we're seeing flakes coming down now. WeatherAGWscam.com was saying it would start at 11:15. Of course, they also started us out at 1-3" at one point yesterday.

That sounds....racist.
I mean, evacuate from what, man-caused disaster by persons of un-acknowledgeable faith?

216 Morning "rons and 'ronettes. Back after 3 days on the sofa with a bad back. Growing old sucks. All I have to add today is that I watched All In With Chris Hayes yesterday and it was a full-on attack on the NFL. The Commies really do want to ban the NFL. 217 Is there an appropriate time/age/stage/whatever to do first dental appoints for toddlers? Baby Bigby is just starting his teeth, we're doing starter toothpaste every other day-ish right now... Posted by: Bigby's Semaphore Hands at January 21, 2014 09:18 AM (3ZtZW) We tell our patients to bring their kids with them for their appointments so they see the Dental Office ( at least not ours) is not a house of horrors. We have TVs in each room and kids games and kids chairs... Then we "suggest" they start getting their teeth cleaned at about 3 but it varies and that is assuming that there are no huge dental problems. Some kids unfortunetaly have milk bottle syndrome and their mouths are rotted outed out by 2, but that is rare now a days at least where I practice

218 Why would they want to reduce the amount of kicking in a game called "football"?

Posted by: rickl at January 21, 2014 05:29 AM (zoehZ)

219 Many already question whether Goodell's impact on the game is too heavy, and it's understandable. The conversion (or try) is among the oldest parts of football, dating all the way back to the sport's rugby roots. For a new twist, get rid of the holder & do a drop kick or punt thru the uprights. Put the kick totally in the kickers hands.

Posted by: rickb223 at January 21, 2014 05:30 AM (CRyse)

220 If they're going to mess with it at all, they should make it into a drop kick for the extra point. Not as easy as the current place kick, and lends itself to an option to go for two. (Doug Flutie's drop kick near the end of his career must be on YouTube, I haven't seen it in years. It was the first time it had been done in a game since WW2.)

227 The extra point serves a purpose of keeping the scores tighter, if only by the occasional missed kick. You'd think that would keep up the tension just that little bit more.

Feeling better, Carol, but still with congestion, wheezing and a general fogginess.  I'd be more hesitant about going back home were it not for the fact that, in 15 years, the only time I've ever been out - other than vacation - was one week when I busted myself up in a motorcycle accident.  So as soon as things are set in motion, I'm out.

234 Re nothing in particular: I've always admired the work of political - editorial -cartoonists. Few interest me politically anymore, though, as I have become more aware of The Regressive Narrative and its many pushers. To make a strong statement AND make a good cartoon is no easy thing. Too wordy, too many labels, poor caricature, trying to cram in too many messages, so many ways it can fall flat. Not good to do in a 2D medium. It seems, with print's contraction, editorial cartooning is becoming a dying art. But I deem, it's part and parcel of the Regressives who are losing audience. Like Soviet propaganda, ham-handed ugly may reaffirm dogma among the nodding-along select, but they repulse the general attention-distracted population. I don't know how to have political cartoons reach the masses as they used to in newspaper days, but there's a lot of great comics which I'd say more of the world needs to see. Glenn McCoy does good old-fashioned ed. toons, scribbly style, but frequently dead on target with a sledgehammer. Hope n Change has clever clipart with teeth-grinding skewering of Regressive ideas. Day by Day couches its politics in character-driven drama, lush art style, and hot, frequently-déshabillé dames. Liberal Logic is good for poster-style works in the popular photo-with-caption format. Just off the top of my head, and sub list. Animated GIFS and videos are also the editorial cartoons of the Internet age. (I've had some fun with those). In an age of ghettoization and niched markets, we're still working out how to reach the masses with propaganda that teaches civics and civility. The flash of one memorable editorial image can be worth a thousand attempts at persuasive argument. Spread the good stuff far and wide, online, and printed out for the office bulletin board. Everyone is The Press now. Court said so. ... Although I've cartooned for all my six decades, and have strong political opinions, I don't really have the political cartoon mind, as far as sharp, current-issue-oriented panels, and especially that multiple times a week ability. The closest I come is some pseudo-artsy general statement about Big Brother, like today's doodle. http://mindfulwebworks.com/doodles/hes-everywhere The next 3 doodles after that serialize a 12-panel I did just when Reagan came to office, comically quick-reviewing the Presidents of my lifetime up until then. I don't think I could easily emulate the style I used then, but it would be fun to continue through today's disastrous administration. http://mindfulwebworks/doodles coming up I see the next thread is up now. I assume everyone has mooved on, so I don't have to feel too guilty for the extensive blurt and self-absorbed blather at the thread dead end. I hope.

235 Forced to pay union dues? Let's change the idea a bit and see if it still makes sense. If you aren't a member of the KKK, should you be forced to pay dues to the KKK? The NAACP? The Screen Actor's Guild? Your local gardening club? What is wrong with us? This should never have become an issue...for either party or any ideology. (It's the same reason I think that all NGO's and all non-profits should be shut down. I'm sick of carrying their dead weight around on my back.)

237 What about taxing unions that don't allow voluntary membership (ie a federal right to work regulations)?

It could pass the Senate with only 50 votes since it's a budget issue, and John Roberts had made it clear anything positioned as a tax is fair game.

239 Opportunity knocks for this once great country.  If SCOTUS does not heed the advice of FDR and crush the public leeches, er, unions, then we are most  boned for the longest time and my hopes will fade to the eleventy11!1!ist degree.

The union case is a biggie.  It is, again, likely up to Kennedy.  Alas, I would not deign to believe that the liberals on the court would honor FDR's express counsel on the dangers of public employee unions nor would they acknowledge our preserved 1st Amendment's rights to  Free Speech and Association.  They simply would not succumb to the antiquated Constitution when such a Holy Grail is at stake.

Now, were it a matter of shoving a pair of scissors into the brain of a viable baby with a toe in the birth canal or teaching "fisting" to 3rd graders so as to impart a better understanding of the love of lesbians or a state sponsored association of  hole stretching gays, the 1st Amendment under the "living, breathing document" would shine quite brightly in their opinion supporting same (along with a discussion of new rights under the penumbra of [insert any fucking Amendment that serves the end, the means being justified.])  **spitting on their intellectual bankruptcy and political corruption**

Fingers crossed, prayers sent.
