— Gabriel Malor FRIDAY!
The incredible, shrinking Charlie Crist campaign.
Some food for thought over at PJMedia, which (amazingly) wasn't prompted by Certain Effin' Doomabee's big mouth, first from Roger Simon: "How Social Conservatives Are Saving Liberalism (Barely)" and then a response from Bryan Preston: "Rebuttal to Another ‘Why Won’t the Social Conservatives Just Shut Up?’ Post."
And a cool bit from a 1934 L.A. Times on the Lizard People who lived under Los Angeles 5,000 years ago.
Have a great weekend. This week's podcast will be up soon!

It's all bad anyways..
I read a piece somewhere yesterday that laid out some pretty good evidence that the Senate races are tied to Barky's approval ratings.
The thing is, though.. will Barky and ValJer think up some "crisis" to build up his ratings before the elections? Or, maybe he doesn't care since he's not up for re-election?

Simon's wrong - gay marriage is not nearly as popular as people thing it is. Mostly, it benefits from the psychology of bullying to shut up its opposition. There's a reason why nearly all the states that have it only have it because of judicial activism.
Frankly, I think that this whole "The SoCons are hurting us!!!!!" nonsense is just an effort by RINOs and "fiscal conservatives" to argue around the fact of their own electoral deficiencies. RINOs always ignore the fact that while the Tea Parties may have the trifecta of Miller, Angle, and O'Donnell to their name, the GOP establishment candidates have taken even more of an electoral beating.

I think Ace has been tending in the SoCon direction since starting the HQ, but I'd never put him in the category. As far as "screeching" - well, argue coherently why the SoCon viewpoint is an electoral loser and I'll give it consideration. Start out with "why don't you homophobes shut up about Planned Murderhood," however, and I'll damn well screech.

For all the shit the RINOs give the TP about Angle, they conveniently forget that the Searchlight Pederast didn't magically appear from out of nowhere. Rather he beat a series of Repukes since after Paul Laxalt was in office so, unless Angle has perfected time travel, there's a string of RINO carcasses that Reid has dispatched through the years, including, I'm sure, some that Rove thought were perfectly "electable" as part of his permanent Repuke majority.

Preston's response if dead-on target. He makes a good point about effectively disenfranchising SoCons, too. I know there are a few head-in-the-sand lunatics here on AoSHQ who think they can win without SoCons, but that simply won't happen. If you don't stand with SoCons to save the culture, then you will be doomed to 30% minorities in elections, here and forever. Something that the more libertarian-minded, "my way or the highway" crowd needs to think about....but probably won't.
If the GOP follows Roger Simon's advice, it will only cement my desire to see the GOP die a quick and spasmodic death. Even if that doesn't happen, if the GOP formalises its dismissal of SoCons, I'm all for splitting the Right vote and letting the Democrats win again and again until the GOP and the liberaltarians figure it out. It's not like the GOPe and the RINOs have been doing a very good job of beating the Democrats anywise.

My bad.
When it comes to SoCon issues, he does not persuade. He hammers. Right from the start. Then he wonders why things get hot.
Well, maybe he doesn't wonder. What do I know. I'm a Moron.

Every poll that asks people what issues are important to them leads with the economy, jobs, etc.
So, just as gay marriage is not important to most voters, neither is abortion.
We need to make 2014 about failed Obama policies.. hammer Obamacare as the next show drops on employer plans. Lay the lost jobs at Obama's door and every Democrat who voted for O'Care and any of his other policies.
We need a wave election again, because 2016 doesn't have anywhere near the potential for gain as does 2014.
Then we can go after the White House in 2016.
And I read an article last week that suggested Mike Pence might make a great dark horse candidate.. I could live with that!

Hmm. I don't see a lot of that, but then, I generally check out early in the afternoon, so maybe the fights are taking place on the ONT or late afternoon threads.
I would like abortion banned. I realize, however, it can't be done. It should, however, be treated as the serious, life-ending procedure that it is. And if that makes people uncomfortable, I'm sorry. I consider it murder and, while I will never have the electoral power to make it illegal, I will certainly do all I can to discourage it from occurring within the bounds of the present law and within the spirit of civil disobedience.

There is, I think, an excellent case to be made that a prosperous nation filled with hardworking families is, at its base, a moral and just society. The happy family wants to succeed. They want to instill the virtues in their children. They don't allow pop culture filth to put its hooks into the family. You can tie a good economy and full employment to moral growth. I wish I knew a candidate who could do so persuasively.

Ever notice Ace's hostility to faith?
He's got a blind spot when it comes to religion, and I don't know why. My own pulled-out-of-my-ass psychoanalysis is that, somewhere at base, he feels that religion is opposed to the things he enjoys, like ball dipping and tan-line prOn. I know, and Bannion knows, too, how very easy it is to explain that the Church is in no way anti-sex, and actually considers a healthy sex life to be a good thing, while still believing that prOn, in itself, is a deadener to pleasure, but for some reason, people's (not just Ace's) blinders go up.

They are building their little mousetrap and the GOP is busy trying to find which cave will bring Donk Voter into our fold when the reality is the vote for a mule is an exercise in faith.
Once the GOP passes amnesty this spring or summer after the primary season closes I will make it my mission to give the donks a super majority to overtly rend the Constitution asunder LEGALLY rather than the half-assed way they do it now.
Time to get the cards on the table and I can't see the people's will with the current supplicant butt thrust GOP undermining the case for liberty.

Either the Republican Party wants a social conservative wing, or it's time for a divorce. The fact that the social conservatives haven't ALREADY walked away is a testament to their (our) loyalty, and a consistent application of principles to behaviors.
As for Ace, it's clear he has "issues" related to sex and politics. I'd suggest he find a way to work those out, but apparently that's what he does when he descends into the comments and starts these wars on his own blog.
Yes. He starts them.

Unfortunately, the hard-liners on both sides of social issues forget a few basics and thus alienate people who would otherwise be on their sides.
The worst failing is a tendency to demand a kind of moral absolutism that casts all unbelievers into Outer Darkness. I agree with a majority of SoCon stands, but do not see them as central political issues. No matter what the subject, warning sirens go off when I'm told that the government should be the enforcer, or indeed have any part in the issue.
Some True Conservatives make this mistake. They claim to want less government, but they want said government to control the use of drugs, buttsecks or what women do with their bodies.
I don't. Either way. Politicians do not and should not have the authority to control moral issues. On either side.

Yes, he IS hostile to faith. No one faults him for that. What he is faulted for is how he expresses it.

It's been made quite plain not just here but in the GOP at large that SoCons have NO representation, no should they expect ever to get ANY of their social preferences codified no matter how miniscule...
like say matching Fwance's 24 week cutoff on abortion.
I *we* get it, message received.

FWIW, I don't believe for an instant that Ace is "hostile to faith". I do very much believe that faith and religion were never part of his upbringing or his family to any great degree beyond childhood exposure.
So its not that he hates your prayers or your faith, but going to church and praying publicly are just things not done, not forbidden just not done.
There may be additional beliefs he holds that stops him from attending or believing, but that's the beginning.

Now, as I was saying to CBD just the other day, you really don't want to use 120mm canister in the open. When you fire it down city streets the walls tend to magnify the effects of the round.

No one was saying she couldn't fuck the whole 82nd Airborne. We were saying other people--particularly the (formerly) Catholic institution she was enrolled in--shouldn't be forced to pay for her pills and shots and abortions because she felt she shouldn't have to cover any expenses that arise from her "lifestyle choices."
And that's got nothing to do with "don't want people to have sex." Stripping the wages of Person C because Person A wants to give free shit to Person B to limits the ability to C to pay their own way through life and move ahead in the world, essentially depriving C of their right to life/liberty/pursuit of happiness.
But no, let's beat the shit out of C for not wanting B to have fun.

BINGO!
That's when I left that thread. When I saw that no matter how much I said that I wasn't saying what he was saying I was saying, he still insisted that that's what I was saying. Can't argue that set of conditions.
I think that if I had renounced all religion on the spot, he still would've told me that okay but you still think that way. He would not let go his preconceived notion of what I was saying.
I take full responsibility for being unable to counter that claim. He may well somehow be correct but I don't have the skills to convince him otherwise even though that's what I feel is correct.
Oh. Well. I'm pretty stubborn and it's a testament to my respect for Ace that I quit arguing even though I felt wronged and misunderstood and saw him doing it to others.
I usually can't resist an argument under those conditions.

Before his appointment, Bharara worked for Sen. FWIW, I don't believe for an instant that Ace is "hostile to faith".
neither do I. If he were, he'd be frothing at the mouth about it like my daughter. *sigh* He seems to be very much worried that it's the so-cons who are destroying electoral chances.
I remember my father, who was for his time a weirdo - a Mick from the Irish ghettoes in Manhattan who voted for Nixon over Kennedy (which got him ostracized from his family), an avid reader of National Review (we had those mags everywhere in our house), and who ranted against Johnson, Medicare, and Medicaid, and the decline of the culture.
I remember him being despondent after the Goldwater debacle, worried that the Dems had presidential elections sewn up into the foreseeable future because of the lopsided Johnson victory. The only bright spots he could see on the horizon were the young conservative bucks like him at the 1964 GOP convention and an actor named Reagan who gave an inspiring speech there.
If you heard Dad today, many would have pegged him as a so-con. And I guess he was, in many respects, other than he heavily distrusted most politicians.
but he was a fiscal conservative (a CPA who heavily reined in spending at the non-profit hospital he worked for), a military hawk (Army guy), and a devout Catholic (not a fake one like Pelosi, Biden, and the Secretariat of State) who was vehemently anti-abortion.
I believe many Americans out there are like him, even today.
Dad really believed Reagan could pull the country together behind the beliefs he espoused all his life.
And of course Reagan found a way to galvanize the so-cons, the fi-cons, the hawks AND blue-collar Democrats into 2 huge electoral victories.
Why couldn't we do the same? Because we are so balkanized and pointing fingers so much we can't find and get behind someone early enough to fight through the BS?
What we're missing is a leader who appeals to all of these factions in some manner.
Dad was a big Sarah Palin fan until the day he died. He believed she was Reagan in a skirt. Although I disagree with him on that because she is too shrill and has been too heavily damaged.
I had heard that Ted Cruz is going around quietly and privately, appealing to conservative leaders about uniting behind candidates for the midterms and for 2016, not making a splash about it. Whether it's true or not . . . and if it is true, if it's for him or other candidates, who knows?
But if the MFM and GOP so-called leaders and their toadies are making it plain who they are backing, why can't we? Why do we have to have so many "conservative" candidates in the primaries that they split the traditionalist votes and give the wins to the one moderate candidate in the race, who always happens to be the GOP the MFM backs - until the primary race is over? When will we learn?

He and I have had good repartee on the role of faith in preventing cargo cults and magic thinking in politics. I am confident he knows I respect his writing ability, and intellect. His salvation or lack thereof is his business and I have never been a fire and brimstone evangelist.

It's a long story involving squalling harpies who demanded I give up my social media accounts "because we're your family!!!" and then didn't bother to call or e-mail on my birthday or when I was sick for three weeks, much less chat with my every day...like the people who live in my computer do.
Ho-hum.

Were I thin-skinned I'd allow myself hurt at being painted as a Paladin or Cleric in D+D terms...
I am far too doubting to be be either.
Faith is supposed to be a private matter, but we have the left wanting to have their pet faith(Islam) and attacking the practitioners of faith they hate(Evangelic Xians) and this odd swarm of idiocy...all while practicing their Evangelical Secular Gaia Worship Faith.
I take solace in the fact we are by the nature of our faith and the flaws of mankind destined to suffer, and it is simply looking to be our relatively minor turn at persecution.
My scourging will be in all likelihood nothing compared to the Genocide practiced against our Coptic brothers and sisters and I should strive to bear it nobly.

And he's p!ssed that the SoCons won't join in and "compromise" by contributing their limbs.
And I don't care what the voters (who have been indoctrinated for too long) think the message from the SoCons is. I don't care that it means we lose elections.
Better that than compromise our beliefs for the fleeting CHANCE at a "win". (that turns out to be a loss as the GOP immediately repudiates any and all statements said during the election and goes off cementing their hold on power and their non aggression pact with the Donks.)
kfuf that.

However the donks are not reasonable. They will (and have) taken "reasonable" regulations and turned them into de facto registration and gun possession prevention schemes. And it recently is beginning to get disassembled.
So take your "reasonableness" and shove it. Being reasonable these days will get you put in jail and your life ruined.

Apparently I missed a hell of a fight last night...
Look, the GOP needs to make a decision. Which are more valuable: the so-con votes or the fi-con votes? The Venn Diagram which shows them both continues to more further and further apart.
I'm a pretty rabid fi-con (even if I am a government employee) and only disagree by a matter of degrees on a few so-con issues. I'm not sure what label should be applied to me relative to my belief system, but I do know that harping only on fiscal issues is a loser. Evidence: Mitt Romney and pretty much every (R) candidate for the last 20 years.
The thing is though, harping only on social issues is a loser too. Hell, so-cons can't even get out of our own primaries. If you can't win over a majority of republicans, how on earth can you expect to win over a majority of voters as a whole?

But here's what I don't understand. You're obviously very rational in that you understand you're never going to outlaw abortion. So what is the point of losing elections over and over again trying to outlaw something you know is never going to happen? Isn't that the definition of insanity?
Does the "pro-life" label now mean it's simply a statement of faith? Pro-life used to mean politically, they wanted to outlaw most abortions. Is it now just about politicians wearing the hat of moral crusader and being a part-time preacher?
I think social conservatives/religion has actually"won" the battle of hearts, even people with almost zero religious convictions don't look at getting an abortion the same way they look at getting a cavity drilled.
My problem with social conservatism is not the specific morality issues they are addressing, I happen to agree almost 100% with them, it's the fact there's no legislative solution and the end result seems to be pushing the US into full blown socialism.
We lost the 2012 election over social issues, period. Obama and Democrats did everything they could to talk about abortion, birth control, and homosexuality, and our side had bat shit crazy responses.
