I nearly started choking when the guy gave me the offer because I was hoping to get maybe a grand or two. He said that it probably wouldn't be on the lot for more than 24 hours. Summers, Orszag and their staffs agreed. For weeks that spring, a tug of war played out inside the White House, according to five people familiar with the episode. On one side, members of the economic team and Obama health-care adviser Zeke Emanuel lobbied for the president to appoint an outside health reform “czar” with expertise in business, insurance and technology. On the other, the president’s top health aides — who had shepherded the legislation through its tortuous path on Capitol Hill and knew its every detail — argued that they could handle the job.
The president is expected to highlight the economic benefits of immigration reform, framing the debate in a light that might appeal to Capitol Hill conservatives.
In the end, the economic team never had a chance: The president had already made up his mind, according to a White House official who spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to be candid. Obama wanted his health policy team — led by Nancy-Ann DeÂParle, director of the White House Office of Health Reform — to be in charge of the lawÂ’s arduous implementation. Since the day the bill became law, the official said, the president believed that “if you were to design a person in the lab to implement health care, it would be Nancy-Ann.”
Three and a half years later, such insularity — in that decision and others that would follow — has emerged as a central factor in the disastrous rollout of the new federal health insurance marketplace, casting doubt on the administration’s capacity to carry out such a complex undertaking.

There's an old saying I just made up: Be funny or die.
Sam is dead. A "young" Woody Allen obviously is no longer with us, and Newhart has turned himself into an old crank. He might as well be dead. As for Emo Phillips, I can honestly and proudly say I have no idea whether I have ever witnessed him perform in any way, shape, or form.
I stand by my statement.

I saw something that will set the tone for me for the rest of the week.
Pope Francis is addressing the crowd at St. Peter's Square. He's got his whites on, blessing the crowd, ten thousand people all adoring him...
Francis brings two kids up to the balcony to release the Doves of Peace. Beautiful moment, the doves are flying, it's a beautiful thing...
Then out of nowhere, some ugly ass black bird and his seagull friend tear into those birds like it's a Golden Corral buffet.
There's a metaphor in there for the US but I'm too lazy to go looking for it.

Something I just learned about Maryland...
They don't report people who have been involuntarily committed or treated (eg "mental defectives" under the law) to the NICS.
In other words, if you are a Marylander who can't buy a gun in MD because of your mental illness, you can just travel to Pennsylvania, buy your shotgun, and then head back to MD.
Just because someone is mentally ill doesn't mean he isn't smart.
So yeah, the calls from the twits north of the river for universal background checks are actually more histrionic than I had thought they were.

It should be noted, I prefaced my original comment by specifying "funniest person on Earth" for a reason.
It's like being Heavyweight Champion of the World. No, there aren't any Joe Louis or even Mohammed Ali types around anymore, and obviously with a half dozen or so belts around, the title doesn't quite mean what it used to.

So I had a choice between watching the gay wedding disguised as an awards show, or a game of recreational touch football disguised as a Pro-Bowl.
This is one of the reasons I spent all weekend watching The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Extended Edition), complete with all the special features. I was able to completely ignore everything else and pretend stupid people exist only in my imagination.

I'm in a particularly sunny mood. Every ounce of my considerable willpower is going into not rage-stroking.
Little stuff has me spun up. For example:
Currently at the top of my list of people who deserve to be smashed in the face by a functioning weed-whacker, dragged across rolls of concertina wire, bathed in alcohol, thrown down the stairs and trampled by bulls:
Healthy and physically-able people who take the elevator up or down a single floor.

Because while my ire is not at the moment directed toward people using the elevator, I am nonetheless ready to drag an acid-soaked cheese grater over the face of the next person to ask me why so-and-so isn't here, as if I am their secretary and have a damn clue.
