Happy Monday.

San Antonio gets the first bookless library.

Augmented reality tech is coming along.

Liz Cheney is ending her bid to unseat Wyoming GOP Sen. Enzi. [Updated, 7:06am -- Cheney's official statement cites serious health issues in the family. I'm sure prayers would be appreciated.]

Oh, and if you missed it on Sunday, Gov. Romney accepted Melissa Harris Perry's apology, as expected -- with the caveat that kids should be off limits. Did anyone think Romney wouldn't be gracious about this?

Our first podcast of the new year is below. We make some predictions about how things are going to be this year, and, for my money, Andy's first prediction has already come true.

And that's why the GOP is the party of losers.  What Romney should have said - either in my words or in PC words - is, "Fuck you, Perry.  You're only sorry that you got caught saying what you really think, and now you're crying crocodile tears to save your token half-black ass.  You thought cracking jokes about my grandson was funny then, and you still think it's funny.  Because that's the kind of loathsome, nickelfucking garbage you, your network and your whole rotten party are.

14 Another lawsuit targeting this administration. I'm Suing Over ObamaCare Exemptions for Congress: If the president wants to change the health-care law, he must ask Congress to do it. Sen. Johnson is a Republican from Wisconsin. http://tinyurl.com/po65uus The legal basis for our lawsuit (which I will file with a staff member, Brooke Ericson, as the other plaintiff) includes the fact that the OPM ruling forces me, as a member of Congress, to engage in activity that I believe violates the law. It also potentially alienates members of Congress from their constituents, since those constituents are witnessing members of Congress blatantly giving themselves and their staff special treatment. Republicans have tried to overturn this special treatment with legislation that was passed by the House on Sept. 29, but blocked in the Senate. Amendments have also been offered to Senate bills, but Majority Leader Harry Reid refuses to allow a vote on any of them. wsj

Now, with that bile out of my system, here's a story.  I originally posted it in the Sunday open thread, but here it is again for those of you who didn't see it:*

Unlike other studios, there was no real corporate structure at Disney. There was Walt - and then there was everybody else. Nothing - from a new ride to the texture of toilet paper -  was decided without Walt approving it. The writer Charles Shows found this out when he went to work there. The underlying atmosphere was one of outright fear - for instance, if Shows came up with an idea, he was supposed to submit it to a producer. But that producer was so afraid Disney wouldn't like the idea that he would throw it into a wastebasket - in effect, figuring it was better for Walt never to see the idea than to see it and hate it!

Shows finally figured out how to work the fear aspect to his benefit. One day he saw Disney in the cafeteria. In front of hundreds of employees, he walked up to Walt and asked, "When do you have time to see my Disneyland storyboards?" And that was all. Nobody watching the two had any idea of what was being said. Nobody would dare ask Walt what Shows had said and they were too nervous to ask the writer himself. So they assumed what Shows had spoken to Disney about was very important, and that a friend of Walt's was a friend of theirs!

Later on, Shows used this trick to get a better office. He picked up the phone and said, "This is Charles Shows in 312. I need a bigger office." Well, the building manager had no idea whether or not Disney approved the new office, and he knew Disney would fire anyone questioning his decisions. And he was afraid to ask Shows if the office was approved, because Shows might tell Walt that his decision was questioned!

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

*and yes, the fact that I've got a splitting headache has affected my decision.

6 weeks?

Where do you live sunshine?

We've got 8 maybe 12. Now if you only count heavy snow then maybe 8 weeks but cold and rainy sucks worse than cold and snow. (unless you have to drive in it).

Speaking of driving, as per the UPS and FEDEX in the bad snow? They use the same trucks. they may be later for a pickup but most places that have decent snow plowing will clear business streets first. So the trucks roll.

As to leaving stuff with out ringing bell or knocking. This started a while back. Companies contract special rates with UPS and FEDEX for this service. They pay less and hope that pilferage/theft/damage is low enough to make it worthwhile.

I don't mind it so much for commercial deliveries but what if you're a residential and you don't know when they were coming with it? It could be gone for days before you know it was stolen.

So far I've never come up missing anything or had to make a claim. *knocks on wood*

25 Of course Romney was gracious; in his campaign he didn't jump down the throat of Hilary Rosen after that ambulatory yeast infection badmouthed Ann's way of dealing with MS.  It was the perfect chance to take it to Gaylord Focker and the cocksucking lowlifes he had in his campaign and Sir Galahad Willard completely whiffed at the opportunity.  At least he didn't turn his back to the camera and show the "Kick Me" sign that was permanently affixed to it.  But remember:  He was the electable candidate.

(Dick Cheney loudly telling Patrick Leahy to go get fucked is priceless). Then again, to do so would excite the base - the same base that the establishment and strategists are trying to alienate/dump. So, it figures.

32 Not highly successful companies, highly centralized companies that have a star for the executive officer.

And one who's decisions have SO FAR been accurate and successful.

Trouble with those companies is that when the star fades for one reason or another the companies in question have serious structural and psychological issues that may mean their demise.

Disney's done well due to the extent of their initial success by Walt. They have  lot to fall back on. But they're starting to make bigger and bigger mistakes as time goes on.

Same with M$. It was fluke company accidentally with perfect positioning that was allowed to grow through lack of understanding of the business by their competitors. It was a new technology and a different target market that allowed that. Otherwise they would've got their lunch eaten. Like APPLE got until they too lucked onto a different technology.

Now M$ is floundering to attract the new market with new tech while at the same time alienating their base. (sort of like the GOP.)

Reagan was a natural campaigner who was able to intuitively grasp the mood of the moment and use it to his advantage.  He would nail the hapless Carter or Mondale with a quick "There you go again" zinger and leave them gasping while he moved on to other things.  Romney is a good and nice person, I'm sure, but he's somewhat stiff and awkward in front of people who aren't naturally disposed to like him.  But geniuses like Rove and other Top Men fawn over him because he stays "on message" and refuses to take the gloves off.  So he's a "disciplined" campaigner which probably works in some of Rove's white board formulas but against the human garbage that the donks nominate is kind of inept.

It wouldn't surprise me.  Another story about Walt is that one day - it was either to celebrate his birthday or an animator's birthday - a group of animators got together and screened a cartoon of Mickey and Minnie getting Biblically acquainted.  According to the story, Walt laughed as hard as anyone at the mice erotica, and when the cartoon was over, asked who had created it.  Two animators raised their hands.

Walt fired them on the spot.

Of course he would and that's the problem.   I mean, it's not Romney's problem, of course not, but it is a major problem in dealing with the Left's tendency to treat the Right, to say nothing of conservatives, as Unpeople.

At some point I would like to see someone say no, your apology is not accepted.   No, I will not be gracious about this.   No, I will not stand here and allow you to treat me and mine as subhuman and the problem is not that I am refusing the apology, the problem is that you do not consider me an equal being worthy of respect.

Of course, then the story would be about the mean ol' meanie mcmeanerson who is being so mean and rude and refusing to accept an apology.

69 A most blessed and happy Epiphany! Here are the words of a great Epiphany hymn-"As With Gladness Men of Old" As with gladness men of old did the guiding star behold; as with joy they hailed its light, leading onward, beaming bright; so, most gracious Lord, may we evermore be led to thee. As with joyful steps they sped to that lowly manger-bed; there to bend the knee before him whom heaven and earth adore; so may we with willing feet ever seek the mercy seat. As they offered gifts most rare at that manger rude and bare; so may we with holy joy, pure and free from sin's alloy, all our costliest treasures bring, Christ! to thee, our heavenly King. Holy Jesus! every day keep us in the narrow way; and, when earthly things are past, bring our ransomed souls at last where they need no star to guide, where no clouds thy glory hide. In the heavenly country bright, need they no created light; thou its light, its joy, its crown, thou its sun which goes not down; there for ever may we sing alleluias to our King. Here are some very nice versions: Words: William Chatterton Dix (1837-189 , 1860 http://the-american-catholic.com/2013/01/05/as-with-gladness-men-of-old/ May Christ fill your spirit with his light and love!

73 also over at legalinsurrection Depressacare: Obamacare affective disorder Just an anecdote, but one that I think is illustrative. I was at a wedding this weekend and saw someone IÂ’ve known for a long time. SheÂ’s not a very political person. SheÂ’s a therapist, and she volunteered to several of us how at this holiday time of year, her patients normally complain about family problems. But this year, all people wanted to talk about was how anxious and worried they were about losing their health care plans, or relatives and friends who were losing their plans. She said the spontaneous voicing of concerns about loss of insurance really took her aback. Just an anecdote? so sad, and, yet, so many cannot connect the dots (or the huge blinking neon Arrow sign) to the White House and the Democrats

86 Rachel’s Show Maddow is part of the new matriarchy running NBC News behind the scenes. There is one such adult, actually, and her name is Rachel Maddow. Though she provides the network’s ideological vision — MSNBC president Phil Griffin has called her “our quarterback” — she’s neither an executive nor a manager. Griffin, who wears both hats, is, from all appearances, letting the inmates run the asylum. Meanwhile, the network that Griffin has labeled “the place for progressives” is experiencing a free fall in its ratings, which are down 29 percent from 2012. ... Behind her back, colleagues call her “the queen,” a not so subtle suggestion that Maddow gets what Maddow wants. NRO

Not very realistic and not very attractive and the characters not sympathetic. Blue Jasmine: Couldn't get through it. Boring. Working class people treated as trash and no chinese in chinatown. Woody Allen is clueless. We're suppose to feel sorry for the thief??? Dallas Buyers Club: guy gets aids, gets skinny, gets sores, gets to buying and distributing totally legal but ineffective drugs. That's not entertaining and there is no eye candy. Oblivion: fell asleep and when I woke up I thought I was watching star trek. went back to sleep This is why I don't watch many movies. They suck.

138 Posted this last night, but it deserves to be posted again: Jerry Coleman, truly a man for all seasons - a decorated war hero, Yankee World Series MVP and iconic, Hall-of-Fame San Diego Padres broadcaster - died Sunday at age 89, after a career of more than 70 years in baseball, the Padres announced. Coleman, a baseball treasure, signed originally with the Yankees out of the San Francisco sandlots in 1942, only to spend the next three years as a marine bomber pilot in the Pacific theatre of World War II, flying 57 combat missions over the Solomon Islands. Upon returning from the service in 1946, Coleman worked his way back up through the Yankees' minor league system, joining them in 1949 when he hit .275 and led all American League second basemen in fielding (.980). Coleman flew another 120 missions in Korea and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He had a brush with death on one of his last missions when the engine on his Corsair fighter jet failed on takeoff about 100 feet from the ground. Coleman was carrying three 1,000-pound bombs, which were heavier than the plane itself, and he didn't dare jettison them. Instead, he made a crash landing and, as the Corsair flipped over, the bombs broke loose and miraculously failed to detonate. Coleman, however, was pinned inside his plane, his crash helmet tilted forward with the straps around his neck, choking him. Only the quick thinking of a Navy corpsman, reaching inside the cockpit and cutting the straps, saved his life. "Nothing is as desperate as your life," Coleman said, in that same interview, summing up his war service in which he received a multitude of honors including two distinguished flying crosses. "We were scared just like everyone. We weren't heroes. The only heroes I know are dead." Coleman and Ted Wiliams, both legit American Heroes

I worked in the Disney animation department in the early 1980s, many years after Walt started his Dirt Nap. When we went in to watch the "dailies" (film shot the day before), the Really Old Guys (many of whom were there in the 1940s when my father worked for ol' Walt) would sit in the back rows of the screening room. It just took one of them saying "Walt wouldn't do it that way" or "Walt wouldn't like that" to kill a scene.

Walt was not exactly a prince of a guy. But the studio was hardly the worst place I ever worked. You could buy beer in the commissary and the work load was not what I'd call "excessive."

His spokesman quoted Bezos as saying, “Galapagos: five stars. Kidney stones: zero stars.” An Ecuadorian navy captain in the Galapagos told the Ecuadorian news media that Bezos was flown by an HN-407 navy helicopter from the island of Santa Cruz to the island of Baltra, where his private jet was, then flown back to the United States. The front desk manager at the Royal Palm Hotel in Puerto Ayora, a town on Academy Bay, where the attack occurred, said she was informed that Bezos was first taken to a local hospital before his travel back to the U.S.

In recent months, Alec Baldwin, Martin Bashir, and, most recently, Melissa Harris-Perry have awkwardly crashed into the trinity of sexual orientation, gender, and race, leading many to wonder if there are any adults in charge at MSNBC.

207 WASHINGTON (AP) — Back to work on Monday, Congress faces a hefty list of unfinished business and a politically driven agenda in an election year that will determine control of the House and Senate.

The rare burst of bipartisanship last month produced a budget agreement, but lawmakers were unable to agree on extending federal benefits for an estimated 1.3 million Americans.

The payments stopped on Dec. 28 and Democrats, led by Obama, are pushing hard to revive them. The issue is vital to the party's core voters who are crucial in low-turnout, midterm elections, and Democrats left no doubt that they will use any Republican opposition as a political cudgel.

A rare moment of truth from AP? Admitting that this is nothing but political. I'm sure the Republicans will cave after taking a political beating and the MFM bleating how heartless they are. Never once will it be mentioned why all of these people need extended unemployment

236 On that unemployment crap- that is one place where Republicans- if they want the majority back- MUST hold the line, but they must do it intelligently. They have to clearly point out 1- that the Federal Gov't doesn't actually pay unemployment benefits; those are State programs, and the Fed Gov't has simply been subsidizing *extended* benefits. They have to point out 2- that the economy is still moribund, but there are jobs available. What the extended unemployment is doing is preventing people from filling those jobs. They have to point out 3- that unemployment benefits are a net drain on the economy- just like any other welfare program- and that perpetual continuance of the program is a direct contributing factor to current deficit levels. And they have to do it over the cries of "heartless!" that will inevitably come from the MFM.

263 The representative of a human rights group headed by a designated al Qaeda terrorist was denied a visa by the State Department after being invited by congressional Democrats to discuss drone strikes. Mohammad Al Ahmady, the Yemen director for Geneva-based NGO Al Karama, was expected to brief Reps. Alan Grayson (D., Fla.), Barbara Lee (D., Calif.), and Jan Schakowsky (D., Ill.) the morning of the Nov. 19, according to press release from Grayson’s office. Ahmady, who also serves as a top official in an al Qaeda-linked Yemeni political party, did not attend because of visa issues. The State Department said it could not comment on visa matters. Several Al Karama officials have faced terrorism allegations. Al Karama’s founder and current president Abdul Rahman Naimi was designated as a terrorist and al Qaeda supporter by the U.S. Treasury Department in December, along with the group’s Yemen representative Abdulwahab Al-Humayqani. Al Karama’s legal director, Rachid Mesli, is currently wanted for terrorism charges in Algeria. Schakowsky’s office referred questions to Grayson and Lee, saying the other offices led the briefing. A spokesperson for Grayson said Ahmady did not actually attend the briefing and that the terrorist designation of Al Karama’s president was “not in place at the time of the briefing, so again, we had no reason to suspect any wrongdoing on the part of Mohammad [Al Ahmady].” Liberals, can't live with them and they just will not go away

270 The new 'Full Time' job = 30 hrs. Employment goes up, kind of, payroll stays the same, media crow 'Sucess!' Yeah. More or less. The thing is, even that would be an improvement. But with the Individual Mandate, no one can *afford* to work part-time. Insurance premiums are too high. So on the one hand you have employers who don't want to hire new FTEs, and on the other you have people who literally cannot afford to be employed part-time- they make more money being on the dole AND their health insurance is taken care of.

I saw a Norman Rockwell exhibit while on vacation last week. I hate the guy anyway (fucking FDR fascist "freedom from want" propaganda), so rim the glass with salt here, but going through so much of his work in one place, he seems an early proponent of the pussification of America.  I can't remember the exact quote from the audio guide, but he didn't think people should see "tough" or "harsh" images, so he didn't paint them; he painted sentimental stuff instead.  One that particularly stood out was in a painting fisherman going out to see, the focus is not on the men doing the rough work but on a little boy and old man standing around watching them.  Safe on the shore, just watching.

In his late life, he painted some anti-segregation images that would qualify as tough, but the bulk of his work is just cutesy stuff.  And it's been sold to us as "the real America" for nearly a hundred years.
