Hump Day!

Former Gitmo detainee was implicated in the Benghazi attack. Oh, and contra NYTimes, he was connected to Al Qaeda.

Some good stuff on Rachel Maddow over at PowerLine.

What's next for the UI extension bill in the Senate?

The NLRB's burdensome "poster rule" is dead, after the Obama Admin failed to timely petition the Supreme Court for review of its loss before the 4th Circuit.

I want one of these.

5 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Wednesday, January 08, 2014.  On this day in 1964 LBJ announced his war on poverty.  He opened the floodgates for the FSA and there was nothing anyone could do to close them because the Dems had complete control of both houses with a filibuster proof majority.

29 The good news Gabe is I suspect you will be able to fulfill your longing for a relatively low price.

The news on the former Club Gitmo guest being one of the emcees for the Benghazi Film Festival is neither shocking nor since he is in fact an AQ operative to be widely reported.

The clearest reporting on what was going on was from the Israelis and the Brits...though the Russians and Chinese did not do poorly in their newshounding.

Our media had a vested interest in silence that went oddly uncommented on by the opposition party.

it's a done deal the only piece of work I suspect we will get party discipline on is the new and improved AGW Cult treaty, and I suspect to a degree that will be when Searchlight kills the filibuster in totality.....

It'll be interesting to see if Searchlight is brazen enough to threaten this and if they have killed Civics instruction so well that a majority of Americans are not alarmed by it.

51

Morning, Horde.

No story right now.  Maybe one later.  I've got a ton of work on the desk, and - being the utter fool I am - I'm too goddamn pissed off at Jeff B's comment in the Gates thread:

I think it's way too fucking glib to take a man of Bob Gates' service -- bipartisan service, in the best tradition of a nonpartisan military -- and just pitch it all out the window because Obama asked him to stay on from the Bush administration and Gates didn't simply respond as lot of jack-off fantasies here would have had him do: "fuck you, you Kenyan communist Democrat!"

Newsflash: when a President from an incoming administration of either party asks a cabinet secretary from the prior administration to stay on, he stays. It's a tradition stretching back over 150 years or more and I can't think of a single example off the top of my head where someone has turned a direct request like that from The President of the United States down.

Yes, of course.  Because when the incoming president happens to be a Marxist member of the New Party whose only congressional vote of consequence was to let newborn babies die in a garbage pail, whose associates and fundraisers are known domestic terrorists, who sat in a virulently racist church for over 20 years and who openly admits his wish to redistribute income and fundamentally transform America, your only response when such an ambulatory dick cheese requests you stay on is to say "how high?"

See that barbed cock of Satan in the corner, Jeff?  Choke on it.

It is up to each voter to decide whether or not their Representative has joined the esteemed "Fuck You" list to the point "by (-d) if need be"  becomes not just your right but your civic duty.

I am slowly of the opinion that the threat to the republic, greater even than that of the near Marxists in the party I oppose, is the brazen but deeply held conviction of certain representatives that their opposition is so odious on measure that they are empowered to fuck their voters out of representation.

This is why the GOP is enabled to be dragged ever leftward, and the democrats were free to embrace their lunatic fringe.

Voter inertia and apathy at close perusal of their actions.

58: "Our kids didn't know that people don't just bust out singing and dancing, 'cause we did... and still do."

My wife belongs to the school of thought that believes that singing louder means you are singing better. She will at times break out in a Celine Deon or Journey song.

I reward her efforts by busting out into song myself. Usually with Me and Mrs. Jones in my best attempt at chenneling Billy Paul. I can also do a spot on rendition of Biz Markie's Just a Friend.

Thankfully, this is usually enough to stomp out the singing for a while. At least until her filipina friends come over and the karaoke machine comes out.

That is usually when I suddenly remember that I have a hole to go dig or something.

Alex Trebek sparked Internet frenzy after showing his other side on "Jeopardy!". In a Monday, January 6 episode of the game show, the 73-year-old host spit rap lyrics as he gave the clues for "It's a Rap" category.

Trebek, who has hosted the show for 30 years, read famous verses from Notorious B.I.G. ("Juicy"), Beastie Boys ("No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn"), Dr. Dre ("Nuthin' But A G Thang") and Public Enemy ("Timebomb)" among others.

Obviously, in the SecDef post, he was helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, and thrifty. What he wasn't was Trustworthy, Brave or Clean.

Gates had a duty to serve the people of the United States Obama's actions barring Gates' being a liar rise to an ethical lapse on the order of Bush's much warbled on by democrats "He Lied us INTO WARRR!"

Nobody was asking Gates to quit on the spot, further the execution of duty to the troops and the republic by Cabinet level officials has fallen so low I do not think anyone is shocked Gates held on.

Well, no story, but a recommendation, since Gran noted General Longstreet's birthday - the movie Gettysburg.  Although it gives a great deal more attention to Joshua Chamberlain and Little Round Top than the battle warranted, it's a very gripping story and Jeff Bridges makes a marvelous Longstreet, even with his obviously phony beard.

Everyone should visit the battlefield at least once in their lives.  There is a new multi-million dollar two level visitor's center (first floor uniforms and weapons as well as materials found on the battlefield, second floor a history of the Civil War and a panorama of the battle) and a nearby stable offers horseback tours.

Off the field, visit the Farnsworth House, a B-and-B that still bears bullet holes from the fighting.  Their food is good, they have an excellent war bookshop and in the basement is a tavern that was commandeered as "headquarters" by the North and South when they came to film their separate scenes.  A wall of the tavern is glassed off to display costumes from the movie.

100 How long does it take to reach the break even point on a wind turbine? Would you believe 400 years? ***** Ummm, no. A small point of clarification: The particular wind turbines referenced in the article were placed in a largely wind-free placement, which resulted in a low net power production. So, poorly-conceived and poorly-executed installation seem to blame, not wind turbines in general. We are considering a turbine for rural off-grid home use and expect the break even point to be around 10-12 years. YMMV

108 Theological Thought for the day. Are you discouraged, in need of strengthening of faith? Need support in controlling habits destructive of the temple of the Spirit or threatening to personal relationships? Need help recovering from a life of sin, or dealing with guilt and regret? Are you in trouble and seemingly in need of a miracle? To all these things, there are answers, from faith, through congregations, in scripture. Even ignorance can be alleviated, if one is open to learning. But one teaching chills my shriveled soul and causes me the sweats of terror. You've heard it often and I cringe whenever I hear it; you've seen the truth of it and I know it all too well from hard experience: You can't fix stupid. There's not a lot of hope for cured stupid I know of in religious literature. There was the guy who fell off his donkey on the Damascus Road, but I'm not sure he was more than just morally misguided and ignorant. The betrayer is a similar case. Interesting how each handled their enlightenment, Judas with suicide, Paul with leading the Christian church. Real stupid isn't about knowledge; it's about wisdom. If you can be wised up, by definition, not stupid. "You can't fix stupid" makes me feel more hopeless than a Monty Monday Doom post. It's not that the Almighty couldn't - it's just, that doesn't seem to be on the standard menu of interventionist Deity actions. /sardonic debate ponder reflect reread reconsider debate... oh, WTF... post

Leaving Jeff B totally out of the picture for the moment, the sad truth is that Our Betters in Washington DC have long operated under a system that gives all members of the Privileged Class automatic respect, no matter how ideologically nauseating, crooked and/or arrogant they are. From "my good friend, the distinguished Senator from..." to "you have nothing to fear from a ---- presidency", these goons are free to slobber all over one another. And get away with it.

Perfect examples are the way Dubya and McCain treat(ed) Choom Boy, and the way that various drones at desks go on and on for years and decades serving each new politician with the kind of fervor best associated with pop stars and teenage girls.

Never mind that this faux "respect" too often spills over into the media, where such Seekers of Truth and Justice as the execrable Poppin' Fresh gloss over major crimes in order to keep their precious seats on Blogger's Row.

If we could eliminate the wussification of the political process (which prizes The Game instead of results), our capital would be be full of legislators acting like their counterparts in Korea, with proceedings regularly devolving into shouting matches and fistfights.

I'd like that.

When I built the house, we installed an elaborate hot water to air heat exchanger system for heat in the garage, just so there wouldn't be any possibility of exhaust gasses coming in through the house forced air heating. It fucked up at every opportunity - especially when it was really cold. We ended up replacing it with an inexpensive natural gas wall heating unit from Lowe's. Sometimes, simple is better.

199 The excerpt from Gates' book in the WSJ this morning is a good read. Some main points: 1. Bush may not have wanted to hear it, but invading Iraq did take relevant resources away from Afghanistan. 2. Obama was thinking about re-election from day one, so domestic politics were a factor in military decisions from the outset. Gates so a split between Obama's words while campaigning on '08 (Iraq bad, Afghanistan good) and his policy philosophy after election (both are bad, let's get out of here). 3. The Obama Administration micromanaged the military more than any Admin since Nixon and Kissinger were in charge.

Betty and Veronica are the same face, like Sabrina and Samantha, one blonde and the other brunette.

One of the more famous Archie artists, Dan DeCarlo, was also a cartoonist for several men's magazines in the 50s and 60s, so it's a little odd to see prototypes of Betty and Veronica in garter belts and stockings:

310 I'm from Canada but now live in deep South Texas. It was cold enough the night before last I was worried about something freezing. Cloud cover kept it to 35 F.
I have water in the car windshield washer fluid, exposed CPVC pipes in the attic, well pump in yard etc.
New furnace/Ac , but house doesn't heat well because the ducts are in the attic, blowing down. Having them in the basement works better. Truck doesn't have heat, there's a problem with the blend door which requires removing most of the dashboard.  Wore gloves to drive yesterday for first time ever.
Got a laugh yesterday, some guy on Hannity ?  says sure it's going to warm up for a few days, then its going to get just as  cold all over agian.
When I lived in Canada, just north of Toronto, a cold snap lasted 6 weeks often.

313 JeffB, yes Gates should have stayed on as you suggested, but that does not mean he shouldn't rat out the bastard when he fucks up troops' lives for politics.
