After last night's podcast recording segment on marijuana, I'm thinking we should rename this thread the THCs and see if we can get sponsored by Frito-Lay. It'll be posted by 6am tomorrow.

Meanwhile, if you need to catch up ...

39 Great hymns of the faith-"Thine be the glory" with beautiful pictures of Yorkshire. "Edmond L. Budry wrote "A Toi la Gloire," "Thine Be the Glory," in 1884, reportedly after the death of his first wife, Marie de Vayenborg. It was first published in Chants Evangeliques in Lausanne, Switzerland, 1885. It was translated into English in 1925 by Richard B. Hoyle, and appeared in Cantate Domino Hymnal, 1925, the hymnal of the World Student Christian Federation. It is possible that an Advent hymn by Friedrich-Heinrich Ranke (1798-1876), using the same tune by Handel, and published in Evangelisches Gesangbuch fur Elsass-Lothringern, could have been the basis for "Thine Be the Glory." 51 Sure, Modern Art was anti-communist. Honest to God, I have never met an anti-communist modern artist, and I had a successful one in the family.

This is "true" in the same sense that Rock'n'Roll was a communist plot to undermine American virtues. Things don't always land as launched. It's a trig thang.

Now we are stuck with an anti-human aesthetic that we can't escape. We've killed art in order to save it. Those "Socialist Realism" posters? Some of them were pretty good.

61 Breitbart is also reporting on this TFG initiative called Operation Choke Point, which is aimed at shutting down payday lenders without any legal power to do so:

http://tinyurl.com/qgk2jgh

Again, they work behind the scenes to push their agenda through unlawful methods in hundreds of areas, and no one can stop them.

I'm not a fan of the payday lenders myself, as they charge pretty hefty fees on pretty small loans of short duration. Heck, even pawning/redeeming items is probably a cheaper way to go if you need some short term cash. But there are several payday lenders in my town, so there must be a decent sized demand for the loans.

The loans themselves may save the borrowers money, too -- when the alternative is not paying your utility bill and getting hit with a $100 reconnect fee, or covering a bad check before it bounces and hits you with $50 in bank fees for examples.

But our gubmint don't give a fuk about any of that; they just break the fucking law cuz they don't like it.

A 58-year-old Utah woman is set to give birth in a few weeks — to her first grandchild.

Julia Navarro is serving as a gestational surrogate for her daughter and son-in-law after the couple struggled with fertility problems.

Navarro's daughter Lorena McKinnon said she began trying to have a baby with her husband, Micah McKinnon, three years ago. The 32-year-old Provo woman said she's had about a dozen miscarriages, with the longest pregnancy lasting 10 weeks.

After several tries, the couple began looking for a surrogate. McKinnon said a friend and sister both considered carrying her baby, but ultimately decided against it.

That's when her mother offered to step in. "As a family, we have to help each other," Navarro told The Salt Lake Tribune

Got to hear Ari Fleischer on the radio complaining about the Gates book.  His argument is that Gates shouldn't have disclosed conversations in the White House because they are damaging to the President and said President should feel secure in the Oval Office having conversations without worrying about them getting out.

I was just thinking the same thing I tell my kids...if you're afraid of getting caught in a lie, DON'T LIE.

Fleischer is perturbed that the President may feel he has to be a politician 24/7.  I say if he's honest and forthright, he doesn't have to worry about being a politician.  I mean, this isn't an issue where Obama said something like "hey, I campaigned on this strategy and it isn't working - I want to do something else, so let's brainstorm and I'll take it to the American people."  No, it was closer to "I have to keep doing this stupid thing so I can get reelected, but I think it's stupid so let's do this too..."

To me  Fleischer's statements  encapsulate the issues conservatives have with the Establishment types.

Last point - White House tell-all books have been around a long time.  To somehow pretend that this is unprecedented, as the WH seems to be doing, is dishonest.  Frankly, I think there would be a much lower appetite for such books if the American people weren't expected to deify the government in general and the Presidency in particular.

Rubio gives a speech on poverty and the welfare state.
Posted by: chemjeff

For the working poor, Rubio would transform the Earned Income Tax Credit into a real wage subsidy, which would function as a kind of reverse payroll tax, so that people would get a portion of it with each paycheck rather than in an annual sum. This would also extend it to more people (notably poor single men,).

93 The Earned Income Tax Credit is a Reagan era idea to bridge the gap between welfare and working. Because it is processed at tax time, it is easy to abuse and is subject to fraud. Changing the system to allow it to pay out weekly in paychecks administered by the employer would solve some of those problems.

That DPRK news release is interesting in another aspect: apparently three games were played- two NBA vs DPRK and one mixed squad.  The DPRK news agency reports the results of the mixed game and the one game the DPRK won.

No mention of the other DPRK-NBA game, I wonder why...

Sadly, this is how we have to view the "news" reporting in this country these days- what's NOT being reported is often just as important, or more important, than what IS reported.

My understanding has been that  medical care at the VA has always been means-tested, but I  heard recently that they are going to actually enforce it.

This of course has NOTHING TO DO with Veterans getting care for service connected conditions.

146 Racial discrimination in school discipline is a real problem.

I can believe that.
Obama's Justice department, taking a cue from the news media where the media doesn't mention race when a certain minority is charged with serious crime, the standard now is to not notice a crime has been alleged if the accused is a certain race.

Only white students can now be disciplined. Taking it one step further, white students are discipline problems. So the obvious solution; white students need to be segregated and sent to separate but equal schools.

The other part of the story, police are called to schools to handle discipline problems too often. Police presence in schools is a provocation, and schools need to handle discipline problems themselves (with their own well trained staff)

We didn't have these problems fifty years ago when white students were kept segregated from the rest of the student body.

157 A few observations on l'affaire Kris Kreosote: 1) If he goes, then it's one less bought-and-paid-for stooge GOP hack we have to deal with for 2016. 2) After tongue-kissing SCOAMF just before the election and stabbing Mitt in the back, for supporting Amnesty, for refusing to support the legal challenge to Obamacare and setting up an exchange, for supporting the Ground Zero mosque, I hope that his political career is permanently derailed. 3) The Democrats are talking about supposed "body counts" because of the GWB land closures, and yet the GOP never discusses the body counts as a result of F&F and Benghazi. Fuck them too.

Yes, actually.  Because it's better for well-functioning markets, instead of the highly-distorting minimum wage, and it's *also* better to tie poverty assistance to *actual work*, instead of having it look like a "free money" bonanza when tax refund season rolls around.

--------

Heh.  Sean, I was lectured by a gay liberal acquaintance of mine how Pope Francis wasn't supposed to  get elected due to  his "progressive" views and somehow hoodwinked the entire College of Cardinals.  He then went on to explain to me exactly how Francis is going to turn the entire Church around.

This from a guy who a) hadn't voluntarily stepped foot into a church in forever and b) thinks Christians are the most evil force on the planet.

I asked one question:  OK, exactly what dogma will Pope Francis overturn?  Gay Jerk's response:  "Francis went right out and said "who am I to judge," and he's right, so he's abandoning all opposition to marriage equality and ending the Church's war against homosexuals.

I pointed out that Francis hadn't actually said anything the Church itself hadn't been saying all along, but Gay Jerk just couldn't get it.  He was trapped in looking at a person of his own creation instead of what that person was actually saying.

What's funny is he considers himself an erudite scholar in the reality-based community.

If a person held multiple jobs, would they get checks from each place? If so, how would one place know how much an employee made at another? The sum of the employee's wages would determine the subsidy not each individual check.

Well if you upped the minimum wage and eliminated the EITC, then only those that *work* would receive the bennie as well. The difference is that business pays directly through the upped minimum, whereas the EITC is a gubmint redistribution scheme.

Well, I don't know. He'll probably cave, like most Republicans. But the idea itself is still a worthy one IMO.

Chemjeff the problem is they are not even trying anymore.  The welfare state can't be strangled but it can be weaned You can make some alterations to it that would force the recipients to value a robust economy more than a carnivorous industry killing GAIA Watermelon sacrificial one.

No Republican is going to the poor and asking "are you in love with your caseworker?"  Recipients do not tend to like the invasiveness of the "we're here to help, and by help we mean micromanage where your benefits wind up" system the democrats favor.  You take steps to show them that you are not interested in hurting them, and will in fact reward their own personal industry.

Eliminate foodstamps EXCEPT for the unemployed non-disabled recipient.  Roll the cash valuation of foodstamps into the monthly voucher system I expressed a willingness to entertain and you reintroduce a non-subsidied revenue stream into the food cycle getting costs back towards a market driven price-point.  This would also incentivize the poor learning budgeting.

Introduce a gradated benefits % system and eliminate most individual's use of medicaid.  Again you would save money by eliminating the medicaid overhead and reintroduce market based economics into the lower income citizen's healthcare.  Make it understood, "you have to pay for your plan and it is YOUR responsibility but here is the money spend it wisely."

We have a % of our citizenry that has no grasp how the market works or what the practical economic implications of their policy preferences are on the economy that supports the democrat vote buying system they inhabit.  Political reality will not allow us to do what should be done, so we should sell what can be done and introduce the steps needed to get America back its "Can do and I am free" spirit.  The GOP as rendered starts off bargaining with what they think the sane donk offer will be and then joins "Walks Backwards into Burros" in rushing leftward.

The overhead of the federal benefits system is not miniscule and it is being supported largely by a xerox machine that is debauching our wealth...

I notice the political class doesn't lose a lot of sleep over sending service members home early, maybe we need to exert our efforts towards making the case to F$A that some of the overhead going home is to Their Benefit.

Hell offer to cut a % check for their portion of cuts or reductions in the rate of growth for say 50% of budgeted savings equally apportioned across the general population.

The country could use a domestic baby boom, and populism is a language F$A understands....

What we are doing since Jack Kemp left the scene ain't working and what I just described above would have smoke coming out of Chris Matthews' ears as he tried to pin "stereotypical GOP" on me....

none of our team's "budget all-stars" has that power that Newt and Phil Gramm had.

Coffeedoxy:
Decaf is Docetic because it only appears to be coffee.
Instant is Apollinarian because itÂ’s had its soul removed and replaced.
Frappuccinos are essentially a form of Monophysitism, having their coffee nature swallowed up in milkshake.
Chicory is Arian, not truly coffee at all but a separate creation.
Irish coffee is Nestorian, being two natures conjoined solely by good will.
Nitro coffee (coffee + Red Bull) is Montanist, having a form of godliness but denying its power.
Affogato is Adoptionist, being merely topped with espresso.
The Café Bombón is Sabellian, appearing at some points to be foam, at others coffee and at others sweetened condensed milk.
The Caffè Americano is a form of Unitarian Universalism, being so watered down so as not even to qualify as coffee.
The Café miel violates Canon 57 of the Council in Trullo, “for it is not right to offer honey and milk” in one’s coffee.
The Cafe Mocha (espresso + steamed milk + chocolate) is syncretic and polytheist, for it presumes to adulterate coffee with another nationÂ’s gods.
The Doppio (espresso + espresso) is Monothelite, permitting only one will to dominate.
Half-Caf is another form of Adoptionism, being a hybrid of disparate natures.
The Pharisäer (drip coffee + 2 shots rum + whipped cream) is nothing but sheer Antinomianism.
The Red Eye (drip coffee + 1 shot espresso) is Ebionite, for it would swallow up pure faith in the Law.
A rigorist exclusivism for Fair Trade Coffee is a form of Donatism, insisting that only sinless hands may produce a true beverage.
Coffee is bad for you”: The watchwords of the Iconoclast.

249 Since the totalitarian denies man's dynamic nature, views him simply as a submissive robot, and provides this robot with one single, simple answer to all ambivalences, doubts, conflicts, and warring drives within him, all attempts to dislodge the official cliches clash with those same cliches. The believer's isolation in a fortress of other delusional thinkers gives him no opportunity for clear thought or contact with other influences. He is immune to reasonable propositions. He is convinced that he is reasonable, and that his enemies are not. Having burned his bridges behind him, broken with his family and old friends, he cannot go back. He is committed to his involvement in the group. To renounce it would be to repudiate himself. ... Any external stimulus which threatens to penetrate his armor and make him see the absurdity or injustice of his position is rationalized to further harden his rigidity. He has joined the movement at least partly because it handed him stereotypes in place of his vague notions and saved him from having to think things out for himself. Any stimulus which evokes a symbol causes a reflex action. ... He has become the movement.

252 Posted by: FITP at January 09, 2014 09:02 AM (mtjSE) For the Catholics, I think it's a misunderstanding of the actual concept of "charity" (which requires freedom, effort and self-control.) Granted, Government (coercion) is in fact not really charity at all (not really "the opposite" but certainly not a virtue.) When exactly this started is hard to tell, but it's certainly the slow decline of liberalism at work.

Unfortunately I know too many people like that. For example a guy and his wife who are socially very liberal (never attend Mass) got married in a Catholic Church. I said if you disagree with the Church over so many issues like gay marriage why did you hypocrites get married in church. Quite, it is a lot like the Secular "Jews" IMHO and the Church itself seems as much a non-psychotic Democrat Booster organization as much as an organization interested in doctrine past the leadership's policy preferences.

No offense or castigation intended.

A lot of the Church "charity" seemed to be heading towards "wouldn't it be nice if there were one world government that took care of our needs?

Yeah, it sure would and you might want to ponder whether that organization would be the UN or the Vatican.  The UN is not in the appease Christianity business they are in the appease Radical Islam business.  The entire notion and parts of Roman Catholicisms' at least personnel's embrace of it seems shortsighted IMHO.

Nice posts on the faith by the way Bannion, I hope things turn around.

I kinda get what you're advocating there, but when people have little sense or sense of responsibility most will just blow the money and then claim "I'm starving". Human nature.

While my kids were in school, starting at about the 4th grade, I gave them cash at the start of each school year for clothing. "Here's what I have budgeted for, go buy what you want. But! Do not come back later in the year and tell me you have nothing to wear, or that your shoes are worn out, etc. It's up to you to use the money responsibly, or you can dress in rags and blow all the cash on video games. I don't care. It's up to you."

And yes, the amount given for the girl was about 20% more than for the boy because girls clothing is a bigger ripoff.

No.  You're Catholic.  The Church is against socialism - and has been since it popped up on the scene.  Go read Rerum Novarum.  You'll see it there.

I highly doubt you would shit on a neighbor in need if you were face-to-face with them.  You'd probably help.  Most of us would.  That's Catholic economic teaching in a nutshell right there - the principles of solidarity and subsidiarity.

In other words, you have an obligation to help, and a responsibility to do it at the lowest level possible.

Jesus told us to feed the hungry and clothe the naked.  He didn't tell us to steal money from other people to do that.  Francis is saying that you - not the "royal" you but you personally - have an obligation to help.

He's a simple guy, and he's using simple terms to talk about this stuff.  He's just not being very articulate about it.  But he hasn't changed anything the Church has ever been teaching on this point.

290 It appears to me that the upper hierarchy of the Catholic Church has no qualms whatsoever about getting in bed with Caesar, i.e. getting the State to force the wealthy to pay to take care of the poor.

Reading "Charity in Truth" was eye-opening and very alarming.

That's because you're a good parent.  I try to be, the government never is.  Try this challenge ask a coworker, or the pizza boy to explain the law of 72 to you and if he gets it right you'll tip him 10 bucks, but if he gets it wrong he has to listen to your 3 minute spiel and then go check your answer on bing.

Listen visibly with attentiveness, if he gets it wrong politely explain the compound interest shortcut to him and then hand him the 10 bucks and tell him to look it up anyway.

You open some of their eyes.

293 Posted by: Sean Bannion at January 09, 2014 09:09 AM (sbV1u) Eh, The Vatican II sinner over here allows for levels of discussion regarding the tenants of morality. But you have to keep it in family as it were. To the public we must present a united front. This is where we have largely failed recently. Take the contraception mandate. I get it, lots of Catholics use contraception (no comment) but in my mind this doesn't give you a pass on fighting for the conscience exemption (a real one, not the fake Obama one.) Church teaching is still that it's wrong. So you have to fight for the right of the church to live that out, even if you personally don't agree. Yet I've seen to many "Catholic" organizations simply roll over at various "compromises" offered because they don't personally care.

299 Not Catholic. Period. No matter what they say. Posted by: Sean Bannion at January 09, 2014 09:09 AM (sbV1u) My mother is devout. Never misses church (we had to go twice a week when I was very young), no meat on Friday, etc., and she reads from the Bible every night. And, she's volunteered at various Catholic hospitals. I know she did not use birth control, we have a huge family. I simply could not get through to her, even sending her that horrible video of Obama's support for partial births pre-vote. I know she didn't watch it. I am stunned, and often say, "but, you call yourself a Catholic..." Deep down, these people truly believe Republicans are evil. And, that the Democrats are the party of good, and helping all people. So, the good outweighs that one issue, is all I can come up with. She simply ignores what you tell her as fact about the Democrats. Completely shuts down. It was only after they attacked the church - and the bishops came out speaking, that had her change the last vote to Romney. But, I wonder if she really did vote for him as she told me. She dislikes the Mormon faith to an unusual extreme.
