Happy Tuesday.

Transparency! On Monday, Labor Department officials blocked a reporter from a public event because they didn't want him asking unapproved questions of Sec. Tom Perez.

Rep. Cantor's office on the the latest unilateral, unlawful Obamacare delay:

Our own Slublog also responded, the way only he can:

David Freddoso thinks "the case of the missing jobs" explains the latest Obamacare delay. Also, note his prediction at the bottom.

Shirley Temple died.

I thought this was well-known, but my friend tells me that the "stand down" order has become the commonly-held, but inaccurate conventional wisdom about Benghazi.

That does not vitiate the charge that State did not do all it could have done to support those in Benghazi.

I didn't know about Temple, otherwise I'd have had a couple of stories ready to go.  But tomorrow is another day, as someone once said.

In the meantime, an oldie but goodie - Zero Mostel casts an appreciative eye over Shirley's own pair of Temples:

I couldnÂ’t sleep this morning, so you get a story:

ItÂ’s no surprise that, for all the air kisses and the “loves” and “darlings,” couples in Hollywood movies donÂ’t always get along.  In 1922s Beyond the Rocks, competing idols Rudolph Valentino and Gloria Swanson were paired for the only time in their careers.  Swanson loathed Valentino, once remarking, “who says that faggotÂ’s the worldÂ’s greatest lover?” while Valentino, for his part, made it his job to ensure Swanson was miserable throughout the entire shoot.

One scene in Rocks took place on a yacht, which was anchored out in Catalina Bay.  As it happened, almost the entire crew and cast were seasick through the shoot, no remedy known to man able to cure them.  Valentino managed to hold his own, but he turned the situation to his advantage.  One afternoon, after a hearty meal of spaghetti,* Rudy crushed a clove of garlic in his mouth and prepared for a deep kiss with La Swanson.  They shot the scene, but as soon as the director called “cut,” Swanson broke away, calling Valentino a “stinking dago” and cursing his childish behavior.

For the next clinch, Valentino smeared Limburger cheese on his lips.  As the two kissed, Swanson struggled in his arms, but the Great Lover held her to him, pressing his lips to hers without mercy.  When the kiss ended, Swanson managed to scream “Not only does he eat garlic, now heÂ’s eating shit!” before heaving over the rail.

That ended the seagoing shots.

HereÂ’s a lobby card for Beyond the Rocks:  http://tinyurl.com/qe5982c

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

*Valentino was a good cook and, in spite of his Latin Lover image, a homebody.  He loved nothing more than to whip up a bowl of spaghetti for friends.

33 People get hung up on the terminology, and I think that causes undue problems when you're trying to create an accurate narrative.

I don't know what constitutes a "stand down," and I'm reasonably sure most of the people talking about it like they are experts never heard of the idea before they decided to call themselves experts.

Four people are dead, and they are dead because this administration chose to let them die.

If you can't "sell" that  to the American people, then you don't deserve to be standing in line waiting to take the reigns of power.

Same thing down here (here being NWNC).   The difference is that down here we are utterly unprepared to deal with something like that.

I was telling a friend of mine in Toronto about it and she asked if that was enough for me to get a snow day from work and I told her there was a decent chance it would knock me out of work for two days, if not the rest of the week.

Let's just say there was mocking.  Oh how there was mocking.

To go back to the why work bitches discussion of yesterday, my immediate response is fuck you snow I can't be out of work, I have shit to do.  And that is why those on the Left who are all oh hey we can crap all over the concept of a work ethic believe that the wheel will continue to turn since they assume that those of us who have that immediate response will continue to do so no matter what.   Yeah.  I'm not taking that bet.

Ah, "Lollipop."

There have always been sick fcuks.  I've told before about the MGM-run brothel called "Mae's," where you got to sleep (for a hefty price) with star lookalikes.  Shirley Temple was the most requested name.  Louis Mayer, to his credit, said, "We're not going to turn MGM into a child sex ring!", so the Temple request wasn't fulfilled until a girl who was 18 but looked 13 was found.  She would later report that the men who used her services almost always used a variation of the "Lollipop" line.

There's a foot of snow on the way for Thursday.  Recalling the Empress' cri du coeur from yesterday, why the hell am I at work any more?

61 Today;s hymn of faith: My song is Love unknown" Words by Samuel Crossman who lived from 1623-1683 Born: 1623, Bradfield Monachorum, Suffolk, England. Died: February 4, 1683, Bristol, England. Buried: South aisle, cathedral church, Bristol, England. Crossman earned a Bachelor of Divinity at Pembroke College, Cambridge After graduation, he ministered to both an Anglican congregation at All Saints, Sudbury, and to a Puritan congregation as well. Crossman sympathized with the Puritan cause, and attended the 1661 Savoy Conference, which attempted to update the Book of Common Prayer so both Puritans and Anglicans could use it. The conference failed, and the 1662 Act of Uniformity expelled some 2,000 ministers from the Church, including Crossman. Hello from Sydney - and it's still Tuesday even! 11.30pm and I'm watching the snowboarding event from Sochi

All I can say other than some ripe swear words - Yikes!!!! Crikey!!!!

Those boys are just fantastic to watch

My son snowboards once a year in NZ with some mates  - cheap flight to Queenstown, stays in a youth hostel, snowboards all day, parties all night...

Surfing almost every day after work has certainly helped him snowboard quite well ( he lives in Surfers Paradise Queensland - right across the road from the beach)

As for more serious stuff, I was reading about your dear President's State dinner next week for the French bloke - has he no thought of maybe toning down his own taxpayer funded spending just a teeny weeny bit?

 Like what about the optics?

Thinking of doing a raindance - poor old frangipani tree is really suffering because it's been so hot and dry here for weeks....just saw the drooping leaves so I'd better go give it a good hosing down

97 I had read one time, that the reason all of the bread, milk and eggs disappear before a big storm, is that during a crisis, man has a desire for french toast. **** heh. I have some experience with preparing for tropical systems and it always amazes me that folks will go into a panic buying bread, eggs, milk, lunch meat, and bottled water knowing the power may go out. Meanwhile, I calmly walk out with crackers, tuna, Gatorade, deviled ham, and Little Debbies. No muss, no fuss. And there's never any competition for those items. And... fortunately, I don't need much. I have two Rubbermaid boxes filled with storm supplies and, during the season, I try not to let my pantry go bare.

Meanwhile, in stuff you're supposed to be upset about, Howard Bryant opins in this week's ESPN magazine's The Truth column:

By the 1970s, baseball looked like a different game ... African-Americans comprised a high of 19% of big leaguers. That number today is around 8%.

But the ballad of the vanishing black ballplayer—sung dutifully by the sport’s leaders—sounds hollow when the business of the game is constructed to find talent except black ballplayers. MLB is sinking billions into the Japanese market, most recently evidenced by the Yankees’ seven-year, $155 million deal with Masahiro Tanaka (and the accompanying $20 million posting fee to Tanaka’s Japanese team). All 30 teams invest heavily in Latin America, still the world’s cheapest, most plentiful source of talent.

Percentage of the US population that is Black -- 12%. And in absolute terms, the number of American Blacks is dwarfed by the number of Japanese, let alone Asians, and Latin Americans.

So -- um -- racism or something.

Some people just don't think. We had a tornado/wind shear/blowy global warming,  go thru here 2 years ago. We live in an area with a good size lake. The power went off, and the ones of us near the lake have wells. I usually keep a few gallons of water around in case just for drinking. I got my 5 gallon buckets from the shed, put them in the yard cart and went to the lake for "flushing" water. Someone asked if I was using it for drinking (shocked, you actually could, just boil) I said no, for flushing. He said "how do you get water in the toilet to flush?"
I explained and there was truly a face palm moment for him.

124 When Shirley Temple was an ambassador, she was called "a tough and able negotiator" by Kissinger, who as you may recall did not find BabaWawa so tough. And she was big in the 60's GOP, a congressional candidate, major Reagan supporter, and another who tried to introduce sanity to the media, with a failed TV pilot called "Go Fight City Hall" in 1965.

If you've never seen her actually "act," go and look up "That Hagen Girl" with, you guessed it, Ronald Reagan. Widely panned, but I think it's as transgresssive as "King's Row." And of course her daughter was a grunge rocker. Like Pat Boone.

125 It isn't a waste to buy milk if there's 12 inches of snow on the ground and it's in the 20's. You just leave it outside. However, buying it before a storm when it's another time of the year is ridiculous. When power went out during hurricane Sandy we had filed the tubs and other bottles with water and cooked over our fireplace. We can't afford a generator, so if the power goes out now for a long period of time we'll either have to stay with a friend who has a generator or huddle in front of the fireplace.

126 The federal agency process sends details contained in the annual filings for organizations with $50,000 in annual receipts or less to the Urban Institute, which is funded at least partly by government payments as well as contributions from far-left activist George Soros.

The IRS page directs groups to file with the Urban Institute, although apparently other providers also can file the Form 990 documentation, which is required of every nonprofit, small and large.

135 Still can't believe that one woman before Sandy who's idea of storm supplies was to fill her fridge and freezer. We did the 'redneck refrigerator' thing. Find a pile of snow outside and bury the items of most value/shortest shelf life. Easy to do when the temps outside were in the 20's most days. I've been through power outages of three and four days before. I'll take a summer outage and food spoilage over having a home with inside temps slowly approaching freezing as each day passes. But it's getting old for me. This summer I'll hook up some sort of smallish generator and be ready for next time. I'm not just a AGW 'denier' I think we're clearly seeing signs of the next ice age, hopefully only a short one until the sun powers up again.

If you haven't seen it, find "The Bachelor and the Bobby  Soxer"

Not a great film, but fun and funny.  Temple is a teenager (the bobby soxer), and  Cary  Grant is the bachelor.  Myrna Loy is Temple's older sister, and the plot is not  really worth discussing.

The thing is Temple acts circles around those two, but then she has the benefit of being the love-struck teenager, while Loy plays "straight man" throughout.

Temple would have been 18 or 19 when she made  the film, so it's ok to  ogle, if that is your wont.

I explained and there was truly a face palm moment for him.

-------------

Bruce, I had nearly the same story when I was in the middle of the Northridge Earthquake in CA.

The earthquake knocked out the water main and no one had running water.  EVERYONE in the complex was panicking because, hey, no toilets.  But we had a swimming pool there.

A couple of neighbors were watching me get buckets of water and kind of rolling their eyes at me (hey, he must be washing dishes!) on their way to go pee behind a tree (yep).  Only after one guy got up the courage to ask what I was doing did I explain.  Next thing I know, people are asking to borrow my bucket.

As AtC likes to say, it's cool to know stuff.  How anyone could live in that place and not know what to do when basic things like power and water go out is beyond me.

Also, real benefits to having neighbors who see an 80 foot tall tree 20 feet from the utility lines with an obvious lean toward them and deals with the expense himself. I wish I had neighbors like that.

169 Sometimes it comes as a shock to find that your friends and neighbors are square in the middle of the "too stupid to survive" category.

Natural gas sure is more reliable than line electricity, but remember that in a real long-term screwup, even one short of TEOTWAWKI, the pumps and regulators that feed the gas lines will also go out. Best to have your own well. I also have tons of coal, but dammitall don't have my own coal patch like a buddy of mine in Kentucky did.

Full freezer, no electricity: what you need is a pile of firewood, a large pressure-cooker, and some jars. And you need to get busy. Sometime on a cooking thread we should go into why just boiling isn't good enough for a lot of canning.

A freezer is still good for several days, if you can bear to keep the door closed, harder than it looks.

Does anyone else think that Hillary Papers from yesterday actually will be leaked out of the Clinton camp.  Before anyone rolls their eyes and tells me I have to put on my tinfoil hat remember that those notes and diaries were taken by Hills BFF's hubby and donated to a Univ. Arkansas after said BFF died in 2000.  So right there that is what happened in the most technical sense.  They later became public in 2010 but it took 4 more years for someone to tell the Free Beacon "Hey guess what go look at these."

If Hillary thought there was anything there she felt would hurt her run for office she would have asked to it removed before they were donated.  I know I would.  The bits in those papers fall into 1 of 2 categories "Of course you knew I lied about that so why are are you bringing it up now?" and "Of course you knew Bill is a man whore so why are you bringing it up now?"  So nothing there damages her but it was a hell of a kick off to her 2016 campaign.

228 The Hickster, I have a big house & canÂ’t shut off the radiators in the rooms upstairs that are empty. I have my family home & my mother had it in a trust since 1988. My older brother lives in apartment downstairs. I have two floors all to myself. I turn heat down to 58 or 60 when I go to work but I am always cold, house is old. It takes an hour for heat to come up. I just recently started turning oven on in kitchen when IÂ’m in there. I am waiting or for papers from MA Saves, someone called me back Friday and is going to mail them. I can get 75% off up to $2,000 per unit for insulation. Old houses in New England were built w/o insulation. Papers should be here by tomorrow. I have quote from last year. I will finally get something free, or somewhat free!

Been having an ongoing argument about thermostat settings.

Wife likes to turn it down when we aren't home, I propose leaving it the hell alone.

My reasoning is that for comfort, all of the surroundings--floor, walls, furniture etc. need to be at or very close to the setting.  Personal preference dictates that degree, so disregard just HOW warm/cool it needs to be.

I believe that of you allow all the living area to cool, you will expend more energy raising it to your comfort level than simply setting and forgetting.

    Am I in error here?

As my neighbor found out, it's wise to check the wiring at the outlet.
All houses in the neighborhood were built in the early '70s and have aluminum wiring.

I had to splice copper and install a 20 amp outlet in one room.  "That close" to a house fire.

281 Posted by: irongrampa at February 11, 2014 09:16 AM (SAMxH) My understanding is that it depends on how far you let it rise/fall over/under your comfort area. Within about 5 degrees F (as I understand it), you're saving money. Out side of that, it's more iffy. Far enough outside of that and you're losing money when you have to re-cool/re-heat your home. Of course that assumes an electric system, not gas or oil (about which I have no idea). It can also be messed up if the external temperature is too far out of whack.

Saint Simons Island. On the south end, on the ocean. When I was a kid it was a retirement community- all the jobs were on the mainland. About 3,000 residents, a third of them black.

Then it turned into a "hot property"- real estate prices thru the roof. My house, which Mom sold in 1991 for $400,000 was listed at the peak for $4,000,000. It didn't sell and real estate collapsed here.

But it was a great place to grow up in. Almost no crime- with 2 drawbridge to raise, criminals had a hard time getting away.

I used to row my batt-tow ( I never can recall the proper spelling ) to the Pier to trade in Coke bottles and get a hot dog and small Coke from Ward's drugstore for 25 cents.

Good times.

My old stomping grounds until I moved to the US.  Glad to hear you enjoyed your visit to Cabbagetown as the old comedians on SCTV used to call it.

Did you get to go up to the CN Tower?  If you were at the stadium, the CNT is right next to it.  When you go up, there's a floor in the observation deck made of the clear plexiglass.  You are able to look down about a thousand feet to the ground below.  If you are afraid of heights, then you should avoid looking down.  I took my family there when they visited TO with me for the first time and jumped up and down on the plexiglass and freaked them out.

Efficiency wise not much difference between them and localized space heaters. They both use (the ones I've investigated, anyway) electrical resistance to create warmth. One costs around $2,000 per unit, the other about $50. The ductless systems will provide air conditioning in summer, so there's that.

It drops again to 64 at night, but that may change. Over the same period, I've been paying less for gas than my parents whose house is newer, with a much more efficient furnace. Generally speaking though, it costs more to keep something (like a house) at a higher temp than it does to bring it back up to that temp once/day. But never turn it off completely, otherwise you could suffer pipe problems. I've been told never drop much below 60F, otherwise any pipes under sinks on exterior walls may have a bad day if it gets cold.

299 I don't suppose electric heat has been a viable choice in climates that have a heating system since the end of the nuclear dream. Even at that, I have one of those under-rug pads that I run for a couple of hours a day when it's under 10, and I like it. A full month of that though, and you will notice the difference on the bill.

IG, like turning the lights off every time you leave a room, that's the kind of stuff they've wanted us to argue about for the last 40 years. No clear answer. It will depend on your house, the amount of thermal mass you've got laying around, and how quick your heat-up is. I'm a great believer in hydronic systems, but almost all current home heat advice is based on gas-fired forced air. Hot water systems don't boost a room temp very quickly, but maintain it more efficiently.

Carol, after you get your insulation, I'd have an innovative heat guy look over that heating system. There a scores of little improvements you can make on old radiator systems that pay off in fuel and in "liveability." For instance, you can fairly easily install bypass pipes for some room radiators, that allow you to leave the system on but turn that room down or off.

You can break up the house into more zones with individual control. You can put in proportioning valves, so more heat goes to one zone than the others. You can insulate pipes where you don't want them to let heat out on their way to the radiators. All of these are cheap compared to installing a new boiler or a whole new system. And those old cast iron radiators are very good heat-savers.

314 #286 Did you get to go up to the CN Tower? If you were at the stadium, the CNT is right next to it. When you go up, there's a floor in the observation deck made of the clear plexiglass. That glass floored observation deck creeps me out in that good/creepy, haunted-house sort of way. You can see forever from up there.

Our house--single story ranch, built in 1967, is insulated far beyond the requirements of the time.  We live in the Adirondacks, so winters can be pretty bad.

Looks to be the prior owner(s) added insulation and different windows at some point. The roof will hold whatever snow falls with little or no melting.

I particularly like the deep soffits. You can stand under them in a rainstorm and remain dry.  It also has the advantage of keeping water away from the basement level.

Really nice house that was and is well maintained.

326 I've been told never drop much below 60F, otherwise any pipes under sinks on exterior walls may have a bad day if it gets cold. Results may vary, but our inside temps dropped as low as 40 degrees on Saturday before the power came back on. No issues, but I held my breath. I wasn't worried about the heavy copper used in supply lines under sinks, etc. The copper in hot water baseboard systems is much thinner, though, by design. I have a well-insulated home. Not sure anyone should try that on a regular basis, but I think it would be safe to go as low as 50 degrees. The local radio station advised people that 35 degrees was the critical number to watch. Below that they said it was pretty certain pipes were going to freeze. I have a thermometer with a remote sensor. You could place a unit like that under a sink and get an idea of what the 'normal' temperature difference is on a really cold day.

No names associated with that slanderous remark. Then he goes on about all the NFL players with actual criminal records saying "and that's okay." With one exception, every one he mentioned happened *after* the player was in the NFL for a while. But what really raised my eyebrows was the fact that he decided that scouts (having evaluated him long before he "came out") had placed him in the "3rd - 5th round" despite being (per this douche) "the best defensive player in the best conference in college football." 358 If you can believe it, aluminum wiring was actually required by code in many areas, back in the 60's. And it's clearly, like, mafia -- correctly sized aluminum is really all right, but they just copied copper sizes, which should have been a criminal case.

Similarly, there does not appear to be clear code guidance on the routing of domestic water and heating water pipes in areas exposed to cold. This came up a while back on an ONT. When split-levels were popular, it was stylish to have a blockhouse overhang of the master BR over the garage. And builders would put heating water pipes in that overhang, what the hell, it's hot, right? No. A hot water pipe has to run through a heated area, else it'll freeze faster than a cold one will.

I have a little joke with myself. I built this house. It has full foundations, but the floor slab sits on the ground. Most of it has insulation underneath, not that you'd notice. When I built on, I considered putting heat pipes in the concrete. If I had, it would have been at the height of the use of Gulf Chemical's flex tube, all of which rotted out and failed. So I guess I was right to be wrong, but a radiant floor in that one big room would be great. If I did it now, which would be the godawfullest mess I could imagine. So, I go back and forth on that.

Yes, thank you.  We had a discussion about that about 4 hours ago.  All is well.

361 They seemed ambivalent if he'd even be drafted.

===

I don't think that's a concern anymore. Goodell won't allow the bad publicity of the gay guy going undrafted.

362 The first detection of intelligent extraterrestrial life will likely come within the next quarter-century, a prominent alien hunter predicts. (Space.com via Drudge) hahahaha. We'll "detect" them when they let us! Also, predicting 1st contact? Better luck predicting earthquakes. United Worlds Watcher assigned to us: So, do we smack them with SMOD today? UWW's Superior: Naw. Orders are, give 'em a little longer. I hear there's True Hope in certain pockets of the old USA. Anyway, not on Palin's 50th birthday.

365 @359  correctly sized aluminum is really all right, but they just copied copper sizes, which should have been a criminal case.

.....

but a radiant floor in that one big room would be great.

In re aluminum, Yup.   Anything that is engineered right will work just fine.  Within its designated operating limits  ;-P

I put PEX tubing in my slab-on-grade.   It is the bosoms. But it would be a nightmare to add it to a pre-existing structure.

366 Wait. Obamacare killed Shirley Temple? How heartless.

Or did I get that wrong?

367 @341 'Regarding the Benghazi "stand down" order, you are only talking about a four man team... a low echelon team. We need to know what GEN Carter Ham was told to do with other forces which could have responded at his command. THAT's the stand down orderyou want to know if was given. @peeteysdee' Exactly! I'm kind of surprised at The Blaze, putting out this pro-Obama, pro-Hillary propaganda (maybe I don't know them very well?) They're arguing sematics about a 4-man team, the REAL issue is that the order for a REAL rescue team to go in was NOT given by POTUS. They have special teams that are specifically tasked to respond to EXACTLY this kind of emergency with FOUR HOURS. No such team even TRIED to respond, because of either gross negligence or political game-playing by the POTUS. It's questionable whether the Ambassador could have been saved, but nobody knew that, and nobody knew how long the attack would go on. At the very least, the message would be sent that the US would actually RESPOND!! Hillary's role was to authorized sub-standard security in one of the most dangerous places on Earth (apparently for the purpose of some sort of political messaging), and to work on political cover as it went down, instead of calling POTUS and insist he act like real President for once. I can't believe how anybody but an Obama troll could be unclear on this, at this point.
