Happy Valentine's Day.

Rep. Stockman's absurd campaign against Sen. Cornyn brings the laughs:

NRO's Charles C.W. Cooke is wondering why conservatives are insisting on doing the same thing that failed in October.

The Wall Street Journal editorial board is asking the same question, although it's more focused on Sen. Cruz's role in once again demanding a showdown that he has no plan to win.

The WSJ piece is right, but incomplete. Cruz knows he can demand a showdown even though he has no idea how to win one because (1) conservatives will eat that up, favoring intentions over results as they do currently; and (2) he isn't running for reelection this year.

A securities law expert says that Matt Bevin would have violated securities law if he signed the investor statement supporting the TARP bailout when he didn't really support the TARP bailout, as he now claims he didn't.

Valentine's cover:

Have a great weekend.

2 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Friday, February 14, 2014.  On this day in 1349 several hundred evil Joos were burned to death in Strasburg, Germany.  The remainder of the Joo population was evicted from the city.  It was done supposedly because the superstitious citizens blamed the Joos for the plague.  It was just coincidental that all their property was confiscated and all debts owed to them were cancelled.   Europe has a long history of persecuting Joos.

This whole thing with Bevin's is getting out of control.  He is a failed businessman from Connecticut (and yes I lived there when he did but we moved here to Kentucky last year).  He should have been fined and possibly criminally charged for failing to pay taxes on his own income and failure to maintain insurance on his family business, which subsequently burned to the ground.  Add the fact that Blumenthal his buddy got the state to bail him out for $200,000 to get the business going again under some shady circumstances "because we don't want bells made in china".

I have seen two letters to the editor in the Lexington paper from Democrats saying they were going to change registration just to vote for him in the closed Primary, and I am sure there are tons more.  Democrats in the State are endorsing him officially.  And don't get me started on the Louisville Tea Party.  Their leader is a registered Democrat, enough said.

The bottom line is Bevin's is a shady character and will do anything to avoid his responsibilities.  This is going to end badly.

140 Ever wonder how John McCain got that lifetime HesSuperConservativeSeriousYouGuys ranking from ACU? A big part of the answer is found in this paragraph from the WSJ piece on Cruz: "The 60-vote threshold was reached only after GOP leaders Mitch McConnell, John Cornyn and 10 others voted to let the final debt-ceiling vote proceed. All 12 then opposed the increase on final passage, but thanks to Mr. Cruz they had to walk the plank with Democrats on a procedural vote." See, the cloture vote was the only one that really mattered. So who gives a shit how they voted on the fait accompli? Cruz is exposing these guys' "voting records" - I was for it before I was against it - for the sham that they are, and the WSJ editorial board can go fuck itself.

Ya know what another political reality was, Cookiepuss?  The Repubs didn't have control of the House when Reagan wanted to pass his tax cuts.  So did he just throw up his hands and go drinking and playing golf with a bunch of high rollers?  Fuck no; he did the hard work of figuring out who was vulnerable on the other side on this popular issue and figured out how to turn them.  Boehner became Speaker because voters are tired of spending money we don't have and if the lazy fuck had a principle that he believed in, the political reality would be that he'd be winning the day instead of whining like a bitch in heat.

In the last "shutdown" (which really wasn't), we had news stories of the Democrats going apeshit with juvenile shit like closing down open-air memorials, closing down scenic overlooks, closing down privately-funded facilities, and so on.  People were noticing that the Dems were the childish assholes in that passion play.  The news was reporting it.  Social media was ridiculing it.

So I'd like to hear from the Great Political Prognosticator that if refusing to continue to borrow money to spend it on stupid shit isn't a "win," what in Boehner's/McConnell's strategery actually would have constituted a "win?"  How was it a "win" to just put up a clean debt ceiling bill in the House and give the Administration scads of borrowing authority.

And while you're at it, please explain to me how this bunch of "leaders" in the GOP is going to address this assuming the surrender strategery works and the Senate goes to GOP control.  If they aren't fighting for principle now, why would I think they'd fight for principle next year?

Because, dear pal, the GOP leadership *is* fighting for principle right now...trouble is, they aren't fighting for conservative principles.  They are fighting to keep their seats on the lifeboat when the whole fucking thing comes crashing down.  So yeah, fuck this shit about not having a plan to win.  Ted Cruz's "plan to win" is to attack the problem.  The GOP Establishment's "plan to win" is for the same shitheads to keep their seats.

Now, if we can merely persuade them that you cannot surrender your way to victory, we might be able to get somewhere. If you read Galen's column, he says that the Republicans shut down the government. If we are just going to use the Democrat rhetoric, no point, right? Monty once said something that I think was very interesting.

He was talking about China and said there's a uniquely American tendency to overestimate other country's strengths while underestimating our own.

I see that happening in the GOP right now.  There's this strain of pure  YELLOW over the thought that, gosh, the President will blame us, and he has the bully pulpit, and he will turn public opinion against us and we will lose everything.

But here's the thing.  Obama can't move the political needle.  He hasn't been able to do it with Obamacare (how many young people have signed up...?).  In other words, the GOP is overestimating the strength of the guy with the >50% approval rating.  And past experience has shown the guy to be petulant in the face of adversity, which is a big advantage for us.  We have cool anger,  which  we can  use.  He has white-hot anger, which  uses him.

No, we wouldn't lose a shutdown battle, but for the Establishment hacks who would fret and worry and then go out and surrender it out from under us.

306 The Cruz opponents' mentality is "if we don't fight, we can't lose." Meanwhile, the debt grows and grows ... But don't worry. One day we'll have the White House, a 60-seat majority in the Senate and a majority in the House. Then we'll kick some serious ass.

321 Of the last 17 gubmint 'shutdowns', most were due to the Dems' intransigence, but no matter -- in all cases, the 'laid off' gubmint workers got paid for their time off. Free vacations, every last one.

I remember the heartfelt guest post here from the last shutdown, wherein the laid off gubmint worker sorta supported the shutdown but made it clear he was sacrificing heavily to do so. I recall pointing out to him that they always got back pay for free time off in the end.

For future shutdowns, that should be point one -- no back pay, and no stealth 'raise' a few months down the road to make up for lost wages. Otherwise, it's just another form of kabuki theater.

Which is about all we can expect anymore.

322 Moms Demand Action is of course free to have their opinion on the Paul Amendment, and given their prohibitionist leanings, it isnÂ’t remotely surprising that they are against any expansion of concealed carry laws.

What is surprising is language attacking postal workers themselves, including the text on the image “History confirms. Guns, post offices and anger don’t mix,” the caption commentary, “we already know that guns and post offices don’t mix,” and the offensive hashtag #DontGoPostal.

“Going Postal” was a phrase that arose in 1986 after US Postal Service relief carrier Patrick Sherrill went on deadly shooting spree in Edmond, Oklahoma, killing 14 and wounding 6 others before committing suicide. Other events in 1991, 1993, and 2006 cemented the phrase in the culture as urban slang.

374 Ted Cruz was a "terrorist" for wanting to delay Obamacare in exchange for the debt ceiling deal last fall. Obama refused to budge, going so far as inviting a bunch of Republican to his office just to tell them "I am not negotiating with you."

And what's happened since then?
* Obamacare roll-out fiasco at every level.
*Obama has changed the law multiple times on the fly, including "unexpiring" old plans and delaying the employer mandate.

Ted Cruz offered Obama the solution and Obama just went ahead an messed up millions' health care because he could. How is it that the GOP cannot take this golden opportunity to rub Obama's face in this?

Marybeth,
What is LFG? Sorry but I do not know.
Thank you.

It's Little Green Footballs, a blog that gained an enormous amount of popularity after the false memo regarding GWB's service in the Texas Air National Guard.

Then it went full on leftard.

I'll leave it to others to tell just how bad it got.

Carol, you live in Charlestown, don't you?  So do our daughter and son-in-law.  Our daughter is a surgical ICU nurse at MGH and our son-in-law a physical therapist at Perkins School for the Blind.

Charlestown has really enjoyed a rebuilding and resurgence in the last few years, hasn't it?  It's quite lovely in many spots.

The law passed in 2006 with a very clear majority.  Mark Herring won his seat by, what, 39 votes?  So yeah, he sure has a fucking mandate to abandon the defense of a law duly passed because *he* personally doesn't agree with it.

389 We keep hearing how we are going to win in 2014 and 2016 on Obamacare. As someone who has been devastated by this (a $350 per month increase in premium and complete disruption in my doctors, prescriptions, etc.), what have I heard from the geniuses in the GOP? Nothing.

They are incompetent at getting their message out. Only political junkies like myself hear what they have to say and so far, I've only seen plans to "fix" it. Days go by with nary a word on it. The only press it gets is from the MSM who largely covers for negative reports from the CBO, etc.

Does anyone really believe the GOP, by basically keeping their heads down and not making a stir, is going to win hearts and minds. Does anyone  really believe Mitch McConnell and John Boehner will be able to project a positive alternative to Obama and the Dems come 2014 and 2016. When I socialize with non-political types, they express disgust with all of DC so why should they vote for the GOP? It is beyond wishful thinking to believe that the GOP will win by default just because of Obamacare.

396 The plows always undo what people have done to get their cars out of the snow. They always have the thing pointed to my side of the street. They should switch plow end to other side because parking is only allowed on this street on the side I live on.
That would be too easy to be able to switch the lever to make the snow go to the side where there is no parking.

Posted by: Carol at February 14, 2014 08:57 AM (z4WKX)

I live on a rural road, and the plow does the same thing to me, so lately I've taken to snow-blowing the end of my driveway really wide- paralleling the road almost. That way, when the plow comes by, there isn't a lot of snow for it to push into my driveway. Takes a little longer, but it works pretty good.

What has the "smart set" gotten us?

2 Shitty Presidential campaigns, and cowardice by Boehner, Cantor, and McConnell.

I don't care that Cruz and Rand Paul can't win under the present set of circumstances. But at least they are fighting, unlike like the Neville Chamberlin wing of the RNC and its surrogates.

442 If the GOP would just not say or do anything because they're not in the position, people will start to vote for them because they're not saying or doing anything.

444 How did they win the filibuster proof Senate the first time around, their allies at Justice cooked up a phony indictment of Stevens. they stole Minnesota outright, with Air America's frontman Stuart Smalley, and so on and so, it's like the Top Men, have an inverse learning curve,

They had trouble with the African American vote in a number of state's NBC cooked up a phony tape, edited transcripts, the DOJ paid for rallies to depose a sitting law enforcement official, so that Governor Luthor, and his understudy Bondi would sell out any trace of justice, Despite that, somehow the law was vindicated, but you could ask Raymond Donovan how that works

Vic,

I thought AGW was like, so yesterday if you're a liberal. Isn't the new meme global climate change? That way, any kind of tough weather at all - freezing cold, heat waves, thunderstorms, hurricanes, floods, etc. - can be blamed on man, with calls for government action, rationing of resources, and control. Heck, even if it's pleasant they can say that in itself is a phenomena, the other shoe will soon drop, and when it does it's all us flat earthers' faults.

450 263 It's called 'moving the Overton window, they slowly move the ball. and before you know it, they're celebrating in the locker room, and we're on the bus back home. Think about it, 20 years ago, getting people to believe that carbon, the most natural element on earth is a threat to our future. or pretending that bloodthirsty terrorists deserve a court trial -------------- This. A few days ago I rewatched the movie Caddyshack. I was stunned at how drastically things have changed since that movie was made. Not even a satirical movie made today could get away with the things that were in that movie. Slowly but surely we are being "politically correctness" guided to tow the line.

452 That is no "space junk" in that sidebar video. Stuff re-entering the atmosphere goes a LOT faster than that. And that thing is in the upper stratosphere I would say, from the time of day and the point at which the trail enters shadow from sunlight. It is flying, and either flying very slowly or it's fucking enormous.

So the answer is to NEVER demand a showdown because we can NEVER win one? Yes, that's clearly working. Suck on it.

458 It only fails because Republicans suck at explaining why raising the debt ceiling without making cuts is robbing our children of their future earnings.  Not to mention the fact that it couldn't possibly be true that the only cuts government can make are to Veterans pay and Social Security in order to not default!!  Republicans are scared of their own shadows.  When Cruz filibustered, he put the Republicans on record warning about Obamacare's impending problems.  When Obamacare hit, they remembered it was a Republican who warned them these things would happen.  That is why Republicans have a chance in 2014!!

459 But one good thing about the shutdown disaster is that the leadership learned the folly of trusting the Light Brigade, and now knows that literally anything they do will be labelled cowardice, even shutting down the government.

460 Will Gabriel and DrewM be going mano y mano any time soon?

Posted by: Bob at February 14, 2014 06:31 AM (4NnCG)

461 Let me get this straight... Gabe's boys DEMANDED that we back off the fight against continuing resolutions, and instead, focus our efforts on curbing (or at least adding conditions to) increases to the debt ceiling. They have demanded this of us at least 7 times in the past. Just over TWO WEEKS AGO, McConnell swore that the GOP wouldn't send the president a "clean" debt ceiling increase! Despite the bold rhetoric, the establishment GOP capitulated yet again. However, this time was different. This time, Cruz forced the pigs to wallow in their own shit. IT'S ABOUT FUCKING TIME! So, fuck you Gabe, fuck the open borders, crony capitalist Wall Street Journal and fuck McConnell and all the RINO's currently stinking up the greater DC metroplex!

Yes, it's Quixotic to think that government should have a debt ceiling and to make a case for it to American people and be willing to put political capital at risk for it.

I understand -- Quisling is so much easier than Quixotic.

463 "conservatives will eat that up, favoring intentions over results as they do currently" What results? You mean rubber-stamping Harry Reid's first offer within a week? Yes that's a "result". Republicans want to be known as opponents of higher taxes, while voting to raise them; opponents of abortion while voting to fund Planned Parenthood; opponents of spending while voting open-ended debt limit increases; opponents of terrorism while ignoring Al Qaeda's victories. To me that's preferring intentions to results.

464 "that Matt Bevin would have violated securities law if he signed the investor statement supporting the TARP bailout when he didn't really support the TARP bailout, as he now claims he didn't." It seems to me entirely reasonable to hold the views that TARP would enrich his investors and that the gvt should not do it because that enrichment would be at the expense of US taxpayers.

465 "The WSJ piece is right, but incomplete. Cruz knows he can demand a showdown even though he has no idea how to win one because (1) conservatives will eat that up, favoring intentions over results as they do currently; and (2) he isn't running for reelection this year."

Heh.

Heh heh.

Oh . . . I'm sure that Mitch McConnell recognizes that Cruz knows how to win these showdowns.  Cruz is brilliant -- and what he did this week was welcome welcome artillery -- to take down McConnell.

Cruz knows how to win.  And he *is* winning -- which is why the McConnells and the Malors of this world dislike him so.  It's just that McConnell, Malor and Cruz aren't fighting the same battle. When Cruz wins -- McConnell loses.

And I can't wait.

466 There's no reason to ever visit Politico of Puffington Host now. Gabe brings the progtard inanity to AoSHQ every morning. When he refers to "results," what he really means is "Whatever Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid want." Pfft. Gabe is one of those special snowflakes that believe that politicians aren't doing their jobs unless they're passing more laws to regulate the common folk.
