5 God be with him! So many stories the news media either totally embargoes or takes quite some time in ever reporting. When, for instance, will we get pictures of Venezuala. We probably won't because Chavez was Obama's friend.

22 I've got a question re: Kiev. So I'm reading these stories, seems like the opposition forces have been camped out (Occupying if you will) since fucking November because they're mad the president signed some deal with Russia rather than the EU as the Occupy crowd wants. Now, did the president and his party actually do anything illegal in this? It doesn't seem like it from what I've seen, just sort of looks like the opposition is pulling the old stomp our feet and be a nuisance until you do what we want, kind of like our own Leftists.

Furthermore, I saw yesterday that something like 18 people were killed, 7 of them police. I'm assuming the police are armed and the opposition largely ain't, so when such a high percentage of the killed are the police, I suspect these opposition protestors are taking the lead in the violence here.

I'm not saying I think the president and his pro-Russia side are any good there, I just don't really know the situation well enough to take a side. I can't just jump on the poor oppressed protestor bandwagon when it seems to me like the opposition is no better than who they're fighting.

The Russians regard the Ukraine as their backyard, the Ukrainians disagree.  Add to the problem, that EU are a bunch of conniving clowns and Putin loves to compromise ... 50/50 odds on the Russians rolling in an Armored Division or two to protect their people.

57 Something rather "stagey" looking about that photo.  I haven't been paying attention, so I'm not sure who the actors are,  who are the good guys/bad guys, but it's not like we've never seen photographs being used as propaganda before.

Frankly, I think the garb is a bit much for a street protest, and it's one of those things where the angle makes it look like the gun is pointed at the priest, but it's almost assuredly not.

59 I never had a Pez dispenser as a kid. (Insert "you had Pez dispensers? We had to make do with" joke here.) I don't think I ever quite 'got' a toy that shoots candy out of its neck. And that you just eat the candy because filling the dispenser has such a low rate of return on the effort. Several years back, my kids got me a Hammy the Squirrel Pez disp... is dispenser what they're called? That's what I've always called 'em, but now that I'm typing that over and over, I wonder... anyway... Hammy the hyper crazy squirrel from Over the Hedge. Hilariously semi-obscure character for Pez disp. So, checking out the leftover Valentine's candy at the grocery, I see Pez, so I include that with the cinnamon redhots I'm loading up on for Milady's cinnamon apple pies. When I get home, and unwrap a Pez candy pack... every candy was broken. Most of the next one, too. After three packs, I'd found enough complete candies to fill Hammy. Just what I remembered - too much hassle. Hammy goes back on the Collectables shelf with the "action figures" of Dr Who #4 and Marie Antoinette with pop-off head. § I dreamed Backhoe had to have his collie put down. I sure hope that was a dream! But apparently you guys are really starting to get inside my head. Perhaps I should find other bedtime reading than the ONT. § Earlier, I sat staring at the morning post, sitting naked of comments, decided I had nothing worth "First"-ing about, then went off and wrote all this. Now to go read what you dream people are writing. Morning, Glories! God bless y'alls' day.

75 What's going on in Ukraine is the end result of dividing your country up into two groups and making the other group the evil, kinda like what's going to happen in the US between black and white, rich and poor, Christian and not Christian.

When your 'leaders' choose to reward their friends and tell you to punish your enemies, what you see in Ukraine (or Venezuela, or Syria) is where you end up.

We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee, we glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee for Thy great glory. O Lord, Heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the only begotten Son, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, who takest away the sin of the world have mercy on us. 89 People still think of Russia as a country. Russia is actually a large oil and gas company with an army and nuclear weapons. Gazprom's disputes with the Ukraine stretch back about 10 years. The Ukraine was stealing gas heading for the EU through their pipelines. If they join the EU, it gives the Ukraine certain mutual assistance benefits that limit Russia's options in the future.

145 23 I've got a question re: Kiev. So I'm reading these stories, seems like the opposition forces have been camped out (Occupying if you will) since fucking November because they're mad the president signed some deal with Russia rather than the EU as the Occupy crowd wants. Now, did the president and his party actually do anything illegal in this? Posted by: mugiwara at February 19, 2014 07:05 AM (3a584) http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-25323964 In February 2010, when he was elected, Viktor Yanukovych enjoyed support from most of the big businessmen. He quickly formed a cabinet that represented - by my count - nine different enterprise groups. But through a rapid series of governmental changes he reduced this number to two by December 2013. At present, the government - and increasingly the economy - is dominated by a group of young businessmen who are friends with Mr Yanukovych's eldest son Oleksandr, 40. They are widely known as the Yanukovych "family". However, who owns what is not exactly clear, and it is possible that in fact much of the wealth might belong to Mr Yanukovych's real family. These young businessmen from Donetsk, Mr Yanukovych's eastern home region, hold all the key economic positions in the government as well as the powerful post of interior minister. Mr Yanukovych has used a salami tactic against the tycoons. Young businessmen or corporate raiders buy out their enterprises one after the other. These sales have been described as not very voluntary, given that the "family" controls law enforcement, courts and the tax authorities. http://hotair.com/archives/2014/01/31/qa-what-exactly-is-happening-in-ukraine/ What was the reason for YanukovychÂ’s rejection of the EU deal? Is this just another story of a former Russian satellite cozying up to Putin? There are a lot of factors, but at the end of the day, they have in fact chosen to go with the Russian offer to buy $15 billion of Ukrainian credits. The Ukrainian economy is in a really, really, terrible state and they need that money to stay afloat. They could have an equal amount of money from the IMF, but [Russian money is] easier and it doesnÂ’t come with any of the restrictions that Western money does. The West wants you to do these reforms and end corruption. The administration now, corruption is what makes them tick. TheyÂ’re in it to get rich and going with Putin means they donÂ’t have to give it all up. I personally think itÂ’s very short sighted. but theyÂ’re doing whatever works for them.

But more recently, top Russian officials have quietly made it clear that doing so would cost the fragile Ukrainian economy dearly. Ukraine conducts a large part of its trade with Russia, and the consequences of Russian obstruction would be painful. Ukraine has said it could make do without Russian natural gas, but a moratorium on gas purchases that it implemented last week quickly crumbled.

Once in power, he changed spots, and bowed to Russia's pressure. They wanted democracy and freedom, and he is putting them back under Russia's thumb.

And some people still wonder why we are fooked.

176 "Where do we draw the line on which toaster we will or will not stick our dick into? ============================== No one is advocating American force anywhere. What I'm saying is that because Obama is perceived by the Russians to be without principle, and completely unwilling or unable to have tough conversations, much less use economic power, Putin is seeking to reassemble the Russian Empire (remember, he called the fall of the old one "the greatest geo-political calamity"). Obama tolerates Russian killings of dissidents allover the world, Russian bullying in Ukraine, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and the Arctic, The spread of Russian economic corruption and allow it is allowed in the name of "being flexible". What is really happening is that Obama has a misguided belief in leftist oligarchies as friends not enemies. If you are worried about world wars, you should realize that he is desperately wrong. All of human history shows its easier to push back against bullies earlier rather than wait until all hell breaks loose.

What have the OWS and their American cynics to say of the Occupy movement in Ukraine cities, Kiev? Is this protest over trade "most favored" or much more; over which monetary economic policy system used in trade (Keynesian or Austrian or what), which central bank, which denomination of currency? And has the EU been sponsoring the Ukrainian political activist protest movement in order to force matters from a distance?

Ask Ronald Reagan how to break the chains that bind Russia to the people that it oppresses.  It takes time, and it takes persistent effort.  It takes money.  It take coersion and what amounts to bribery - but if it's done skillfully it can be completed with very little bloodshed.  Ask Czechoslovakia, Poland, East Germany, etc.

Of course, you have to have a leader who actually understands something other than golf.  You need someone who isn't asking a mirror every morning "who's the fairest of them all?"

Vladimir Putin wakes up every morning and gives thanks to a God he doesn't believe in.  He thanks for Barack Obama and, more intensely, the idiots who put him there, the idiots who protect his image, the idiots who work for him, and the idiots that support him.

Ukraine or a major urban city here in our near future?

It doesn't look like they "destroyed" it, but just immobilized it and forced the crew to abandon it.  Still, that's a helluva move on the protestors' part.  Good arms on them!  Might be a few baseball prospects the MLB should look into.

Also, all those MRAPs the local cops are buying up?  What happens when they break down and there aren't any parts for them, or is DoD supplying them too?

267 195. Posted by: coriolianus snow Reagan would... Yes. He also certainly utilized our tax funds to sponsor US black ops and to train the "good" foreign terrorist mercenaries. Reference Afghanistan, Nicaragua, etc. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. While the USSR yet was, the Soviets did the same interventionist military wars as we've been doing in response to foreign affairs since 9/11/01. Putin v. West DURING the Olympics. So the western media waited until mid-Olympic events to "suddenly" report on the Occupy Kiev protest which to date reportedly has equal death toll on police and protesters. The physical confrontations began in earnest when the Olympic events began? Timing is crucial. Years ago, between the fall of the USSR and today, when Putin first rose as Russia's new leader, a documentary was made interviewing Russian civilians from all walks of life. I remember an interview with an educated-professional man from a rural agricultural community, who expressed a popular disgust with how the Russian Mafia had raped Russia given open range through Capitalism. There was no law enforcement after the USSR government fell. But Putin was restoring "law and order" and national Identity, merging what elements Russians traditionally held dear, the Orthodox Church and the pride in their Military to defend the Motherland. Economically, isn't Russia functioning through capitalism now? Hell, capitalist investors (Brits, Americans) sponsored the rise of Hitler's Nazi Germany, and Hollywood propagandized on the Nazi behalf in its own trade deal. Things as they are? Shrillery would reset, "At this point, what difference does it make?" to the Ukraine which direction E/W trade occurs. WHY should the Ukraine limit itself to trade only East or else West? Hell, look at Nixinger's US-China most favored trade nation deal. And as if the EU only trades within member nations. So really, what the hell is going on over there? Engaging a lot of angry youths with propaganda to "make a difference"? What's their version of Craigslist over there to check ads for political activism for hire (not doubting "true believers" of whatever sort exist everywhere). But to obligate a military response from whichever outer direction, as if the Ukrainian government shouldn't be sovereign, and its citizens self determined? The Balkans are one of the most ancient of civilized regions on earth, not saying the most pastoral given the crossroads of cultures, and the aggressive survival traits of indigenous tribes. /...What would newly converted libertarian ace say? I really don't get this trying to out-egg-head the Democrats thing the GOP has got going on. We'll never be able to out-egg-head the Dems, simply because the MFM will refuse to let that happen. Segments will get "edited for time" and mics will just happen to have "technical difficulties." And then there's the subtle stuff they'll do- like listing a long line of "achievements" for people like Former Enron Economic Adviser Paul Krugman, and then say "Conservative Commentator Thomas Sowell." Reagan didn't win by out-egg-headding the Democrats. He did it by going around them; which is what we'll have to find *some* way to do.

314 Read something pretty cool this morning.  Not sure of the source:

"Warriors are not born
They are made through
hard work
suffering
and sacrifice"

Never quit.

Reading that kind of thing is going to make me unass my chair and run 5, and drop every 1/2 mile and push until I can't push anymore then push some more.

Good stuff.

315 I think Barack Obama is going to find it difficult to claim the mantle of "great leader of world history" when he stood on the sidelines in Iran and Ukraine, let Putin do as he would in Syria, and wanted to keep the Muslim Brotherhood in power in Egypt. History will scoff at the attempt. Eisenhower did more for integration than Barack Obama ever did for liberty. Unless...

"9  . . .
Speaking of John Frankenheimer, don't waste your time and money on 'The Monuments Men.'

Rent 'The Train.'  A Sefton favorite."

317 148 Professor Stephen Cohen of NYU (Slavic Studies) was on with O'Reilly last evening defending Putin. Only an expert on Russia and its history of warlord government could possibly apply nuance to the ranking of Putin versus Stalin, Lenin, Peter the Great or the other murdering scum in Russian I story, and come out concluding that we all ought to just get along with Putin because he's kind of a nice guy. As autocratic tyrants go, he means. In Russia. Only because of our weak President are people dying in Ukraine right now. ---- I'm not a big advocate for Putin, but he (and/or his brand of leadership) is the only thing holding that region back from a full-scale war. Such a war is probably inevitable at this point, however. The Ukraine, the Caucusus and that geo-region have all the ingredients of every major war since the Middle Ages--sectarian conflict, Islamic extremism, nationalism and ... the common kicker, the perpetual fight over natural resources. Socchi in ten years will be remembered, unfortunately, in ten years not for the Olympics, but for the bloodbath that is coming to the surrounding region.

318 And let me add---- That is why the Socchi - Sarajevo comparisons are so appropriate.
