Being married and having a child at age 23 is now an "alternative lifestyle".

Well done, NBC. Well done.

3 Hey, it's NBC.  Rachel Maddow is considered the norm.  So, compared to a 40 yr old lesbo, being hetero married and having a kid at age 23 is very "alternative"!

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  TodayÂ’s story isnÂ’t a movie story, but as it was told by the great Orson Welles, it falls into the category anyway.  It concerns the drama critic George Jean Nathan, whom Welles described as “the tightest man who ever lived, even tighter than Charles Chaplin.”*

Nathan lived for forty years in the residential Hotel Royalton at 44 West 44th Street, across from the famed Algonquin Hotel.  He was notorious for never tipping, for anything – not when his breakfast was brought up, not when his cleaning was delivered and certainly not at Christmastime.  So, according to Welles, after ten years of never getting tipped, “the room-service waiter peed slightly in his tea.  Everybody in New York knew it but him.”  As the years went on and the light never dawned on Nathan, there got to be more and more urine and less and less tea.

LetÂ’s let Welles finish the story:  “And it was a great pleasure for us in the theatre to look at a leading critic and know that he was full of piss.  And I, with my own ears, heard him at the “21” complaining to a waiter, saying, ‘Why canÂ’t I get tea here as good as it is at the Royalton?’”

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

*Nathan was the inspiration for George SandersÂ’ waspish Addison DeWitt, the critic escorting a then-unknown Marilyn Monroe, in 1950s All About Eve.

18 Alternative to what? Living in his parents basement, while on their insurance policy until age 25 and going to college and a grant for his Wimmez Studies degree while waiting for the day he is old enough to enroll in Obamacare? Oh, wait, I get it. It's an alternative lifestyle because a "normal" 23 year old athlete would not be married and his girlfriend would have aborted the kid after her free Obamacare condoms broke (that she was inspired to get from the "Nothing between me and hot guys" ad). Forget it. I give up on civilization. Let the burning begin.

Here's a picture of his house.  It's in an older neighborhood near the lake.  I go by it a lot on my way to estate sales.

It's much more likely that he crossed the line with other children, but they either never told, weren't believed, or that people (*cough*, unions, *cough*) covered his ass. Child molestation very often doesn't leave physical evidence, so it comes down to a troubled child's word against an adult's. Plus these monsters seek out children whose credibility is suspect---people are going to believe that a kid who is in ISS is a liar, ditto for the at-risk kids Sandusky preyed on.

Minn. man claims 'victory' over NSA after feds drop bid to block parody merchandise

Federal authorities have dropped an attempt to stop a Minnesota man from marketing merchandise poking fun at the National Security Agency for its surveillance of citizens.

Dan McCall, of Sauk Rapids, sued the NSA and Department of Homeland Security last fall after they issued cease-and-desist orders over the merchandise, which includes T-shirts bearing the NSA's official seal and the slogan, "The only part of the government that actually listens."

"It's a victory for First Amendment rights," said Dan McCall, of Sauk Rapids, who operates LibertyManiacs.com. He told the St. Cloud Times he was notified earlier this week that the NSA and DHS had dropped in their quest to block him from selling the material.

Well, he actually has a logical line of reasoning for the Queen Victoria accusations- he blames most of the world's ills on WWI and he blames WWI on Victoria's mad plan to insure world peace by inserting her daughters into every royal family in Europe. Which, of course, had exactly the OPPOSITE effect.

As for the Left, Islam, Old Europe, UN axis- the unifying factor there, IMHO, is a certain entity which would be very antagonistic towards a people chosen by God...

120 David Wise will give exactly two figs that the media portrays him this way, and I say this with authority. I grew up in the same (small) town as his father although Tom Wise was a good deal older than me. His uncle however was my classmate, later at Fresno State on scholarship. His grandfather was a former NFL linebacker and the highschool football coach and also my 10th grade biology teacher. We all used to ski at our small local hill on Saturdays; the school had a program and they'd bus us up there. Coach Wise was a big part of keeping that program alive for us: we were an isolated High Sierra Northern Calif. High School but we could ski and we had first rate competive well rounded athletic teams thanks in part to this family. They come from a very strong traditional Catholic background. Those of us from that community as well as the (near by) Reno crowd will not be negatively affected my media drivel and we could not be more proud of this kid.

128 Carol, here's what the WSJ editorial writers, who returned to sanity momentarily as long as the subject isn't immigration and Ted Cruz, had to say in part (hopefully this cut and paste won't cause any barrel worthy snafus):

With his studied detachment from foreign affairs, Mr. Obama has shown zero interest in this strategic confrontation. He dispatched his Secretary of State to focus on unlikely peace missions to the Middle East when the chances for making a difference in Ukraine were far greater. He deferred to the EU, which is too diffident and divided to do anything without U.S. leadership. And he has refused to admit that Mr. Putin, his supposed partner in Syrian peace, wants mainly to reduce U.S. influence across Europe and the Middle East.

The Ukraine uprising is an alarm that the world's trouble spots won't wait for the attention of the next U.S. President. They need active U.S. leadership now to prevent them from blowing up into larger and more violent disputes that become much more costly to settle. Mr. Obama may want to retreat from the world, but the world won't retreat from America.

I used to think I was a total anomaly because the ski industry is kind of infiltrated with people—we go out, we’re in the limelight, we get to do what we love—and then you go and party.

ThereÂ’s nothing unique about people who go out and party every weekend. ItÂ’s almost more rebellious to be a person of faith in this world than to be the opposite.

Hello from Friday early morning in Sydney

I confess - was living the alternative (almost)  lifestyle by having a baby at 24yo

Goodness can someone point out to NBC a few facts about optimal age for women to have kidlets? It's a known biological fact..

However as much of what passes for science these days needs no proof eg nightmare inducing climate "science" see lists of what AGW causes...,

I reckon real facts mean nothing for many these days

BTW I'm now  watching the 2nd cricket Test (South Africa v Aussies) and looking forward to the first rugby game this season - we're off to see some footy on Sunday!

152 Being married and having a child at age 23 is now an "alternative lifestyle". = Why am I not surprised? Being married and having a child at age 25 had already become the outmoded lifestyle of American women with a higher education and career motivation back in 1980. That was our experience. Most of our peers who weren't regular church goers waited until their 30s to begin the pregnancy to full term and birthing for entering parenthood, a lifetime profession of motherhood. Since 1970, the Womens Lib and ERA feminist movement activists had already abandoned families, divorced husbands and left children to raise themselves whilst the woman pursued her own full potential. Outside of church congregations, it wasn't only the professional world that was most prejudiced against the conservative married women who chose to birth babies while yet physically best adept to naturally provide the optimal outcome for the child, and to be "young" enough to cope with teenagers when the time came, and to not be old and senile by the time grandchildren might arrive. Libbers who chose to "sacrifice" family in order to "prove" themselves more "deserving" of a career have always exuded utter contempt for any person who would yet propagate any affection for traditional role models. Libbers go out of their way to hinder conservative women from attaining any opportunity. To date, the most scathing contempt is poured upon the conservative woman who IS "rogue" -- the Sarah Palins in the world. Even conservative Republican women like Barbara Bush and Peggy Noonan despise the raw vitality from an independent Western State newcomer to the unwelcoming elitist ranks (unless your father is the insider, Vice President for instance). That men got caught in the cross hairs is no surprise. Even the most brilliant artistic, philosophical and compassionate of independent career women who've emerged during the last half century (Joni Mitchell for example) don't hate men, but know full well that the '60s "Free Love" movement was, as ever, stacked in favor of the male's sexual promiscuity. The "War on Women" is nothing new. The female gender has dealt with the patriarchal order for thousands of years in the world's majority of regional tribes. However, the "War on Men" is new territory, given only a few decades to grow and fester. And whether contemporary men identify their ego within the patriarchal type or even the metromale (bisexual) or homo-centric, it is difficult for everyone. If it were only between adults, and constricted to philosophical debate within a mutually tolerant society? Hardly possible, as we see subsequent generations tainted, Western Civilization neutered and sterilized of IDENTITY beyond perverted and pernicious. All Americans, irrespective of age or ability to comprehend, are wallowing in cultural cesspools. Whatever tiny corner we call "home" as our personal sanctuary is being inundated by our dark Zeitgeist tsunami of Death permeating all realms of consciousness EXCEPT for that which we maintain from WITHIN. Integrity. Accountability. It's a war on Gender, being augmented and enforced by authoritarian government officials in league with opportunists throughout societies, and what we have here is a failure to communicate. We Americans, specifically our ANCESTORS, fought and proved the ideal success of mutual respect that begins with Personal Sovereignty, and balanced as society with the late-18th Century US Constitutional Republic that LIMITS GOVERNANCE. 1908, in his last address to Americans published posthumously, former President Grover Cleveland shouted his last hurrah: THE PEOPLE MUST THINK! [Individualism Must Not Be Lost] THE CRAFTSMAN (1908-1909 archive volume) http://tinyurl.com/lfprcpf /Cleveland, fiscal conservative, anti-corruption, pro-business "Bourbon" Democrat whose life encompassed the 19th Century, his administration weathered the Panic financial collapse, and lived to see the first decade of the 20th Century, addressing us all, you and I today. Don't want to disagree with you -- and teh WSJ -- Cap, but given the current state of our Congress and political parties, might be better for us (and the rest of the world) if Choom Boy sticks to the golf links and the celeb-filled paaaaahhh-taaaaays at the White House.

If President Historic First© chose sides in a conflict in Ukraine, the ME or anywhere else, chances are he'd pick the side most opposed to our interests. Throw in Muzzie terrorists and he'd definitely choose wrong.

And after he chose wrong, would he be held accountable? Yeah, the answer has to be "no". Congress would suck his toes, and our Poppin' Fresh Brigade might titter and giggle a bit, but maintain their resolute eunuch stance.

So let the Chicago Jesus play in his friggin' sandbox while the world goes to Hell. We'll fix it later. If there's anything left to fix.

221 Grammie Winger, My boss was really pissed off at me on Tuesday. He was at the office late because he had to go pick up one of his daughters. I try to stay quiet about how late I’m there. I have a curfew of nine pm. It was after 11 and he told me that my curfew is 9 and he’s told me that I shouldn’t be there that late. I told him that I have been coming in a little later than usual in the morning because I am and have gained 3 or 4 pounds by making myself eat two blueberry scones in the morning. I am not hungry in the mooring & I have to force them down. There was one time I was doing something he should do and I sent him an email around midnight & told him it was on my desk if he wanted to finish it the next morning before I got there. He replied with “are you at the office” but I left. The next mooring the file was off my desk & when I opened my email that was there. He wanted to know if I was working from home or at work. He must not have thought it through because I couldn’t put file on my desk at the office if I was doing ti from home. So now I don’t email anyone past nine pm. I get more work done when no one is there. I also usually have Mark Levin on but he was off Tuesday & I had downloaded Ace’s podcast from Friday and another one and I was listening on my iPhone with the ear buds. I never listened to the podcast at the office except for one other time & there are too man F words in it. I put it on speaker phone. I found two podcasts yesterday of Johnny Carson’s show. I downloaded them but don’t know if they’ll be any good or if they have Johnny on it. We were talking about Carson on Tuesday’s ONT & Laurie David’s Cervix put a link to Carson’s show in one post & I watched several that night & yesterday.

228 Morning dose of schadenfreude http://tinyurl.com/lfdqnes ALAMEDA COUNTY (KPIX 5) — California’s health care exchange promised potential customers they would have enough physicians to choose from. But some new enrollees, including an Alameda County woman, are discovering that their doctor choices are extremely limited. Julia Turner is surprised that she even has to search for a doctor. When she signed up for a policy through Covered California late last year, her long-time physician was listed as participating in her Blue Shield plan. It turned out; however, that he is not accepting patients with her Blue Shield policy, purchased on the Covered California exchange. When Turner called around to find someone else to treat her, she got more frustration. “The only doctors accepting new patients are urgent care clinics,” Turner told KPIX 5 ConsumerWatch. None of the doctors are located in the city in which she lives. Instead, Turner said, “They are in areas of East Oakland that have a lot of violence.” Have fun honey.

That of itself did not necessitate the Ukraine Putin poodle to be so obtuse in escalating the violence via utter obtusion. At this point, given the Ukraine team participants premature departure from the Suchi Olympics, certainly Putin is not at all happy with his Ukraine poodle's idiocy. The point was TRADE in order for Ukraine to prosper mutually with Russia; NOT for civil war; certainly not for military interventionism from without the Ukraine unitary semi-presidential Republic. Viktor Yanukovych will be replaced, to be sure, and sooner than later. The Occupy protesters for liberty need only organize for the upcoming election, and eschew murder. Yanukovich has already removed himself from office, whether he knows it or not.

239 "I read Keegan's book on the war and the way it started, as he reported it, was a diplomatic clusterfuck of incredible proportions where nobody seemed to be aware of what was going on as they lurched toward an unnecessary confrontation that ultimately had a life of its own.

Posted by: Captain Hate at February 20, 2014 08:19 AM (2RiXU)"

The diplomatic clusterfuck that resulted in WW I was aided in no small part by the European tradition of going on vacation for a whole fucking month in the summer.  All the responsible people were out of town and their underlings, who thought it would be cool to have a war, were in charge.

And, of course, the President of France was in Russia poking at the Russians to not let the Austrians get away with insulting them again.  When President Poincarre returned to France he said, "This war, I did that."  Well, actually he said something like that in French.  Poincarre was hoping that while Germany was busy fighting the Russians, the French could recapture Alsace and Lorraine which they had lost in the Franco-Prussian War.  As it turned out, human wave bayonet attacks by troops in brightly colored uniforms against dug in troops on high ground with lots of accurate, quick firing artillery was a suboptimal tactic.

274 Scientists in Australia have discovered a new "very hairy" mouse-like marsupial variety of a species whose males are known for dying after overly strenuous mating sessions.

The new creature is a black-tailed variety of the antechinus, which made international headlines last year when it was discovered that the male has been dying from stress due to intensive copulation.

The black-tailed antechinus is believed to inhabit a small region covering high-altitude wetlands across northern New South Wales and Queensland's Gold Coast.

Dr Andrew Baker, from the Queensland University of Technology, said the antechinus typically has a "frenzied mating period" when they are 11 months old and "all males will die before the young are born".

In the beginning, it really really was (though the reasons for why that was are uncomfortable). A stable, grounded worldview got to be so well-accepted, it bored a generation. Then two. Then three.

Now most people can't remember why a small town, family centered life seems so boring and oppressive; they've never seen it. But that's what they believe. Wonder where they picked that up.

Arrogant young Christians I know have an awful lot of fun, and seem to play off their own ideas and feelings a lot more than their, well, goth counterparts. And they can recruit, too, without being "evangelistic" about it. I do feel that if you dropped them into a mainline congregation such as most were 40 to 60 years ago, though, they'd quickly become as "athiest" (because nobody says "atheist" here) as I am. I never met anybody in my old religion who lived as if they took the idea of God very seriously. I did, and it left me the odd man out.

313 Did you see that the Chavistas murdered a beauty queen in Venezuela? If you read the news articles about it, she was killed by "violent antigovernment protests" That's how the liberal media (1) portrays the anti-tyrant protests in a negative way, when they support a protest they don't call it "anti-government" (2) turns the blame around from the regime-backed killers to the protesters. Chavista thugs murder a protester, and the protesters get blamed for it. That's the media we have right now in America. We can't get a fair shake. We need to establish our own "mainstream" media.

316 I'm surprised they mentioned David Wise at all, he's a Christian. You'd think they'd concentrate more on the other married American, the one who married a Russian girl and lives in and competes for Russia now. It has the whole 'story of Obama' angle going for it.

317 I want to be very clear as we work through these next several days in Ukraine that we're going to be watching closely and we expect the Ukrainian government to show restraint, to not resort to violence in dealing with peaceful protestors,” the president said. Captain Hate, I left to get clothes out of dryer & to eat. Someone may have posted this, but above is SCOAMF’s response to Ukraine. I’m sure he’s afraid to say much because of Putin & we know he effed up with Syria & red lines & Putin saved what sat bit US reputation is left. by the time we’re rid of him, we will be the weakest country in the world instead of the world leader we were.

318 312 Little something here for y'all--check HA for the post about Bush helping our vets. Then let me see some bashing of a man I proudly voted for twice--because he met my prime criteria--unabashed love of country and all that entails. I voted for him twice myself and I have never doubted that he's a good man who loves his country. Bush may have had his faults, but at least we always knew who's side he was on, unlike the current occupant of the WH.

319 306 The average age of first-time parenthood is 25. So, yeah, this guy was a little earlier than average having his first kid at 21. I think it was a dumb thing to marvel about, but it's also kind of odd to act as though its completely ordinary, especially for this group. Oddly though Bode Miller is another one who had kids young and had a bizzare custody battle with a baby-mama while married to someone else, but that's not "alternative".

I doubt that we'd be the weakest in the world since that would include the third world shithole that his alkie polygamist father crawled out of into the reeking lap of his cum dumpster nympho tramp mother.  But it will be close enough to get a "Mission Accomplished".

328 The narration was intelligent and not lefty b.s. Also, they didn't get mired down in the "war is baaaaad" stuff. Yes, we know war is bad but there are reasons why people go to war -- talk about that. Posted by: Judge Pug at February 20, 2014 09:31 AM (6Nj7A) Yeah, in addition to the points you made, I really liked how- despite being a long, but very interesting series- it does a superb job of giving you an excellent understanding of the totality of the factors that led up to the war and how the different nations played a part. One of my grad school professors professors liked to say that WW1 was the most important event of the 20th Century because it set the stage for WW2, conditions in the Middle East (borders, etc), the Cold War, etc.

331 I do fear that anyone who thinks that the "news monitors" program, (or the universal license plate scanning program) has been "dropped" is, shall we say, a bit optimistic. Remember "Total Information Awareness" from about 10 years ago ? Looks like the NSA just ran with that plan without any inconvenient publicity. I'm thinking that the same thing will happen again (and again and again and again ....). It is all getting so very Old Soviet Union so quickly these days.

334 The question persists then, which Patrick Stewart has the goatee?

The First World War had absolutely terrific music, and touching narration. You could get through the whole thing, as I did, without scratching down into what the guy was really saying. The ideology was as conventional as PBS' Civil War. It's what VDH is arguing against in his article.

But I still like it, and re-watch the episodes whenever they're on.
Grain of salt though, old man.

335 I don't get the outrage over this story.  It was obvious to me that the article was comparing Wise to his fellow Olympic competitors.  In very favorable terms, I might add.  Being married and a father at age 23 is apparently outside the norm for that particular subset of people.  Do we really need to waste time making up things to get riled up over?

Posted by: Paul at February 20, 2014 05:49 AM (1U0k+)

336 That "average age of parenthood" (25) includes a lot of 13-year-old miraculous virgin births. I don't think it reflects the norm for married couples.

Posted by: Stringer Davis at February 20, 2014 05:51 AM (xq1UY)

337 337 Well, sure but it also includes Steve Martin, first-time dad at 60-ish, and plenty of ticking-clock forty-year-olds. Wise is decidedly outside the average any way you slice it. Which really shouldn't be a huge deal, anyway.

342 @336 Do we really need to waste time making up things to get riled up over? Why yes. Yes we do. My particular rilage concerns not the inversion of "alternative" to mean heterosexual/married, but the tone of being surprised that a 23 year old is all growed up n sh*t. Men not older than 20 have led other men into battle and died for their country, run family farms, struck out for careers in new cities, etc etc and not just (routinely) married, worked and raised families. The stay-on-your-parents-insurance till 26 and pursue doctorates in doctorish stuff until 35, and this story, are all symptomiat of the progressive extension of adolescence until middle age. Mark Steyn has written insightfully and extensively on this. It's very far advanced in Europe, and increasingly taking hold here. resetting the traditional boundaries of adulthood, our boy/man culture has also played a big role in defining young adult deviancy way, way down as well: think of a a sitting Congress Critter referring to a 6-foot 17 year old killed while committing a battery as a "sweet innocent boy" This is a real and pervasive thing in the culture, and I think not at all good.

343 However with the great advances in medical research/care etc older women do have a chance these days I agree, they have a chance. BUT, it comes at tremendous cost in dollars. Fertility specialists, in-vitrio, etc, etc, etc. In the good old USA now, Obama and minions have shifted that cost to men through ObamaCare. I get no say in the matter. Some women will now make a conscious decision to delay childbirth through their prime years, knowing that options (expensive though they may be) now await her. I will accept gender neutrality in medical insurance the day that my 16 year old grandson (in a few years) pays the same amount for car insurance as a 16 year old female. The 'War on Women' is (as always with the liberals) classic projection. While in psychology projection is a perhaps difficult term, in math it's easy to explain; x = what they say projection = -1 times x
