I wrote about this on twitter briefly yesterday. A former Gitmo detainee, now the director of a UK "human rights" group was arrested for participating in some way with terrorism in Syria. Of course, his lefty apologists are still confused.
DCCC memo: Dems are ready to go on offense over Obamacare. Hah. Bring it on.

What difference, at this point, does it make?

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Here are a couple of stories that really have no point and don’t have any connection to each other.
First – while Citizen Kane is often referred to as the greatest movie ever made (I, personally, find it mannered and boring), in my opinion, Orson Welles gives a much better performance as black marketer Harry Lime in 1949s The Third Man. Upon its release, it was announced as “A London Film Production presented by Alexander Korda and David O. Selznick,” but when it premiered in America, the credits ran, “David O. Selznick presents The Third Man. Produced by David O. Selznick.”
One night in Paris, shortly after the premiere, Welles, Korda and Selznick were having dinner. “My dear David,” Korda began, “I have seen the American titles.” Selznick, having been caught out, began to stutter excuses, but Korda cut him off. “I only hope that I don’t die before you do.”
“What do you mean?” Selznick asked.
“I don’t want to think of you sneaking into the cemetery and scratching my name off my tombstone,” Korda answered.
HereÂ’s a picture of Third ManÂ’s leading lady Alida Valli:
I don’t remember where I read this next story; probably in Darwin Porter’s loathsome Hollywood Babylon – It’s Back!. In any event, the story is that Marlon Brando – who, at the time, was sleeping with James Dean – brought Dean to Lee Strasberg’s Actors Studio, where Marilyn Monroe was studying, and introduced them. Dean’s first words to Monroe were, “Do you want to fuck?”
To which Monroe replied, “How did you know what my favorite thing in the world is?”
As it turns out, the two didnÂ’t sleep together; they passed the afternoon talking.
And hereÂ’s one of my favorite pictures of MM, a publicity still from 1953s Niagara: http://tinyurl.com/lv3wsm3
Hope you all have a wonderful day.

Even if it means losing 2016 also.
My reasoning is that unless they get full control the public will always give their idiocy a try. Let the country get ruined and the people living on the edge and know that it was Democrats that put them there and then, then maybe conservative and fiscally sound policies can be run on for office and won and then implemented.
Just dragging our feet hasn't worked. Too many people are enamored with the ideas that socialism and communism promote as being possible. Even those who claim to fiscally conservative seem to have a problem fighting the urge to spend and spend.
There is no way back to where we once were and it's not certain that what we think were sound fiscal times really were as they led to some pretty bad situations. War and depression to name two.
Get yourself ready and let the Democrats have their day. Hide your guns, change your party affiliation and be prepared to parrot the party line. It won't be long though. Most analysts are pretty sure we will fall off the cliff sometime before 2020.
And by letting them have full control, they will be blamed for the result. Not even the MFM can get them off IF they are in full control.
Besides, do you really believe the last 5 years would've been any better if a Republican had won the Pres. but the Dems kept the Senate? Sure some things may have been less embarrassing but I guarantee you that John McCain has a lot of stupid in him and his favorite advisers would've managed some lulus too.
So let's take a vacay from all the angst and anger and just let the bastards do their thing and when it all falls down, pick up the pieces and make sure they don't get power for 20 years. (if it works out right, a lot of their voters will self deport, die or become so focused on survival that they'll even change their mind.

Every Republican should challenge donk incumbents who voted for 404Care to answer if they voted for something they didn't read or if they read it and were either too fucking retarded to see all the landmines in it or if they wanted the landmines to be in there. Maybe Kimberly Strassel can start paying attention to strategies like this instead of doing opposition research for Rove and the donks against Tea Party challengers to her Repuke mules.

re flood insurance. When we bought our house 20 years ago, a small portion of my yard was deemed to be in the flood zone along with only about 5% of my neighborhood. Post-Katrina, over 90% of my neighborhood is in some level of the flood zone. In that time, premiums have increased 400%.
During Hurricane Floyd, after 20 inches of rain, water reached about 10 feet into my yard. The water level still was not within eight feet of my floor elevation.
Redistribution at its best.
Good morning Horde.

They redrew the flood maps solely for the purpose of increasing the flood zones in order to recover a bunch of money they had to put out on Katrina.

There is a certain forelock pulling serf mindset to some people. I don't get it, but, it's there. I had a brilliant friend who was from Massachusetts and she was that way about the Kennedys. It was so odd to know an observant Jew who kept Kosher, celebrated all the Jewish holidays, and had the highest of moral standards turn around and gush about the decadent scummy descendants of a bootlegger.

That makes me think it was political action. The clout of the insurance act was to force "communities" (that's a word like "folks"; kind of denotes you) to institute controls, to keep people from building on flood plains. Some got pretty heavy-handed, but on average the program has multiply paid off on existing properties without doing much to convince people to move after total losses.
And I can't help but think this was an outgrowth of the Connecticut floods of 1955. Connecticut was overbuilt in all the wrong places before the Republic was founded (due to Fall Line, see?), and when not one but two hurricanes not thunderstorms turned up the valleys that season, the overflow swept all before it -- including the old mill where my grandfather's birth records were stored.
Then it gets fuzzy. Abe Ribicoff was governor, and it does not seem likely that he would have turned away any federal aid -- but in some power duel of that period, a ranking Conn. politico refused DC disaster aid on "ethical" grounds, and really shook things up. After a showdown like that, there is no amount of future spending that Washington won't commit to in order to undermine such a line of attack.
Anyone remember the incident?

School systems in the South are ran by the same "professional education educated" libtards as the rest of the country.
They are ALL shit unless you go to a private school. Which is why I have long advocated for totally eliminating ALL public education and taxes for them.

I like the way you casually note the existing relationship between Brando and Dean. If I had heard they were a "thing," I must have forgotten it.
Well, as I said, it's Darwin Porter. Never trust anything he writes on Hollywood, especially when it comes to sexuality. He wrote a flamboyantly gay novel (called Hollywood's Pink Closet, IIRC), where he repeats the sleaziest of "Hollywood Babylon" rumors as fact - that the Gish sisters were incestuous lovers, for example, or that Chaplin molested the prepubescent Barbara LaMarr. His latest bio of Marilyn includes the assertion that DiMaggio's son was having an affair with MM, which is why Joltin' Joe wouldn't let him approach the casket at the funeral.
What's worth noting however, is the fact that Hollywood has always been a nest of depravity. Our modern era certainly did not invent it.
Certainly not. But people were much more discreet in those days. It was an open secret that J. Warren Kerrigan, a star of the silent days, was gay, but the fan magazines only printed that "he has no time for girls" or "his best girl is his mother." The bowls of cocaine and orgies were beinhd closed doors. And people dressed like ladies and gentlemen, not hookers and rent boys.

So did Barry Goldwater which is why he went out on a limb and voted against it.

I always figured that it was part of crony corruption for ocean side land speculators.
Take Myrtle Beach for example. It was atypical beach front small southern town up until that bill was passed. It had a permanent population of about 7K and land was cheap.
Today the "metropolitan" area is more than 500K and you have to be a billionaire to buy beachfront property. If I recall correctly the last time I saw beach front property it was $1M a foot for a lot 75 ft deep.

You can't argue with sociopaths. They don't care about reason, or liberty, or freedom. They only care about getting their way; which in this case means forcing Christians to bake cakes and arrange flowers for gays. Because that will mean that they win and Christians lose, and that's all that matters; the Power.

I'm sure there are salacious stories that have no basis is fact, but my theory about Hollywood is you have to start with the assumption that much of it is true, and only give up on a rumor when it can be clearly established to be false.
The reasoning is simple: it's an industry born and raised to sell lies. Now, we call this entertainment, and usually that's exactly what it is. Harmless entertainment. However, people tend to give celebrities much more credence than they deserve. This goes without saying.
So anything that knocks them down a notch or two is not a bad thing. I like to think of it, in my kinder moments, as pulling back the curtain to reveal the little man behind it, rather than they big scary guy on the big screen. Maybe he's not so bad, but the image he was selling? It was false, and if people are believing it, they need to be shown the truth. Or a different version of it.
Or whatever. I'm being way too wordy for 7AM.

Craig Livingston, director of White House's Office of Personnel Security under President Clinton. He improperly requested and received from the FBI, background reports concerning several hundred individuals--many of the files covered White House employees from previous Republican administrations, including top presidential advisors. Allegations were made that--First Lady Hillary Clinton requested and read the files for political purposes.
To this day no one knows who hired Livingston. No one will admit to his hiring. To this day the ooze of Clinton slime is still visible.

The president had not spoken to Karzai since a June 25, 2013, video conference, and the two had had no contact since a Nov. 21, 2013, letter from Washington to Kabul.
Obama has said repeatedly that he hopes to leave a residual force of some 8,000-12,000 U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan to train local security forces and target extremists after most combat forces depart in 2014. But U.S. officials had warned that Obama would pull all American troops absent a BSA that gives American and allied forces immunity from local prosecution.
Karzai refused, saying his successor should be the one to make that commitment. He continued to say no even after Afghanistan’s “loya jirga” assembly of elders approved the agreement.
... is anybody surprised by this story ?

Mr. Jones, who was a deputy secretary at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, sent an email to more than 1,000 recipients — including 46 people at HUD — asking them to contact senators to “defend against efforts by some Republicans” to prevent a housing bill to come up for a vote, according to the internal probe. The message also asked “friends and supporters” to tell senators to vote “no” on another amendment.
A months-long investigation by the HUDÂ’s office of inspector general concluded that Mr. Jones and four others at HUD appear to have violated anti-lobbying laws, which restrict the use of funds for publicity or propaganda directed at pending legislation before Congress. The probe also concluded that Mr. Jones violated internal HUD policy on lobbying by federal employees.
Mr. Jones told investigators that he didnÂ’t know about HUDÂ’s policy prohibiting lobbying on pending legislation, according to a draft of the inspector generalÂ’s report expected to be released this week.
“[Deputy secretary] stated that it was articulated to him that ‘I could do things that others could not,’” investigators wrote in the report obtained by The Washington Times.

One possible contributor to the confusion is the presence of Officers from three different organizations.
Two of the uniforms being worn in the video are NOT from our little local Department. Baltimore County police did a very public reach out to find the guy who took the video, as he was not detained, but then posted the video on line.
Towson Police have historically been pretty good at the individual level, dedicated, level headed and seeming to understand the Police/Citizen relationship.
There is much churn in the area as the local University population and the more urban elements get the opportunity to rub elbows in the recently opened nightclubs.
And three months ago, when I asked the Commander his opinion on the Knock-out game, his response was along the order of "What's that?".

Okay NDH, maybe you can help me out. I found out yesterday that I didn't pass the purity test and that I am a freedom hating libertarian who wants nothing but lower taxes and pot, because I questioned the wisdom of this Arizona law. Can someone explain to me how a law that essentially says you have the right to refuse service to anyone you want but first you must come up with a religious excuse is going to work in real life? I'm not trying to be obtuse here.
-------------
Seamus,
Here's the thing...1A rights to freedom of religon are enshrined in the Constitution and are incorporated among the states. For government to cross such a right requires the highest legal standard that exists...that of strict scrutiny. Even at that, the government action must be as narrow as possible and do the absolute least amount of harm possible to pass Constitutional muster. I'm not interpreting this...this is actual stare decisis on the matter.
Now then, keep that in mind as you think about a baker running her own small business. She happens to be religious, and her religion forbids her to participate in any way with a gay "marriage." She has made items for gays in the past who happen to walk in her shop and buy a cupcake or whatever, but making a cake for a gay "wedding" is honestly a bridge too far for her and her religious beliefs.
How does forcing her to make that wedding cake meet the strict scrutiny standard? There are other bakers in town. Indeed, there are many other alternatives for the gay couple to explore before forcing a fellow citizen to violate her religious conscience by violating her 1A rights.
Bottom line - this isn't about the cake. It's in-your-face cultural warfare practiced in the most abominable way.
Now that said...how would *you* balance the rights of the baker in this situation? What would seem wiser to you?

NDH, I've used Rosetta for Spanish and Portuguese. It's fun in that it uses photos and graphics to coach you and continually checks your uptake. it uses a headset so that it can 'hear' how you're pronouncing words.
I haven't done Italian or French on Rosetta, but as langauges go, I find Italian far easier to learn and pronounce. most italian words sound like they look. In French there are all kinds of rules about which letters and vowels are there but you dont actually pronounce them arghh !

Houston: CPS taking custody of baby found in apartment trash
Houston Chronicle: http://tinyurl.com/nhwb3e8
The whimper coming from the dumpster outside building 25 caught Carlos Michel's ear Tuesday morning. It sounded like an animal dying, maybe a kitten, but he couldn't tell for sure.
As the sounds grew louder, the maintenance worker felt certain that whatever was making the noises was struggling.
Seconds later, Michel, 51, reached into the blue dumpster and, hunched over, grabbed a white trash bag. He placed the bag on the ground, ripping it open to find the source - a newborn boy, stuffed among trash and discarded school work. His tiny face and hands were purple, his umbilical cord still attached, his body cold. His soft cries were the only indication he was still alive.
"I almost had a heart attack," Michel said.
He discovered the baby about 8:30 a.m. at The Reserve at Windmill Lakes apartment complex, 9988 Windmill Lakes Boulevard, just west of Almeda Mall.
Paramedics arrived to take the boy to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he was reported to be in good condition...
More at the link.
God bless you, Carlos Michel.

One thing about bakers asked to make wedding cakes and florists asked to provide floral arrangements. They actually have to participate in the event. They must travel to the site and set up the cake at the venue or decorations at the ceremony. They become a direct participant.
I think this is a great point g'ma and one that keeps getting lost. Bakeries have no problem if a gay person walked in and bought cookies or bread off the shelf. They are demanding that DJs / Photographers and bakers ACTIVELY participate in a ceremony which the vendor considers to be a religious event.

2. "It would provide that people are covered when sued by a private citizen invoking state or local law to demand that they violate their religion."
Countering misrepresentations, the professors pointed out that "SB1062 does not say that businesses can discriminate for religious reasons."
I gather from that it means that the State will provide legal representation. I see this as an effort to keep the gay mafia from using lawfare to bankrupt Christian businesses.

There are a lot of people who've complained about his ability as a sports yacker for quite a while so I'm less than totally sympathetic to his plight. I consider him pretty faceless and nondescript so I think he's clogging the court with this suit.

I just did everything in "Settings" and hit "Save Price Settings" button all the way at the bottom of the page. Out of sight unless you scroll way down at the bottom of the page.
I actually get most of my alerts from "WikiArms" and "SlickGuns".

Its in your face lawfare designed to bankrupt silence religious people.
Just a slight clarification there, Vic.
As I said on another thread, I am sick and fucking tired of this country being torn apart by assholes who never got over their daddy issues.

Good morning from way Down Under on another lovely warm night
Talking about gay things - this Saturday in Sydney we have the annual Mardi Gras Parade!
Celebrating Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex Pride - did I leave any category out?
Sadly I can't be there - I'll be at a rugby game....

There is no longer much use in voting. Since the Republican Party wants to be a dead Party with the Whigs, let them.

I agree. I've "gone mini-Galt" as much as humanly possible. Look out for myself & the few people who have treated me decently since my young bride died.
Rest of 'em? Eff the SOB's. They voted for this train wreck? Twice? Screw 'em all. Me and mine and nothing else matters, anymore, to me.
Guess I'm a Nialist now....

Pretty good, if a team has a need for a gay football player. Because that's the only slot* a 6'2", 261 lb. slow, not very strong player could fill.
*insert your own joke here

Wouldn't you think a large chunk of libertarians would see the point of joining with an action that prevents the state from forcing people to violate their conscience, even if they don't agree with their religious convictions? I remember a post from a few years back where Ace talked about moving the gate and sort of blaming conservatives for wanting to move the gate with our oppressive so-con legislation (I think) but isn't it really the progs moving the gate with their changes since we're only asking to keep 100s of years worth of history in place. I just don't understand why libertarians are so willing to jump on board with what I see as oppression. It's only going to get worse as more and move "groups" are granted special rights, right?

But at the rate all the squishies are going, that's what you'll have anyway so it doesn't much matter you saying no.
I can guarantee you there will be another moderate nominee from the GOP in 2016. Willing to put major money on it. (well major for me.)
All these guys claiming to be TEA Party or standing up for this or that are all liars (look at there staffs and look at what they've said and done in the past, you'll notice they've changed a bit since 2016 is getting closer. And even if they got in without the Senate they can do nothing and with a squishy Senate and a squishy House, it will be a disaster with the Dems in either as majority, nothing will get done as the RINO's will cave.
You know it's what's going to happen, you know I'm right. Just admit it and surrender and actually let it burn so that something new can take it's place.
The only way for something new to be born is for something old to die.

>>We are not hearing much about this, but "Common Core" is not innocuous. This is not only an opportunity to standardize the indoctrination of this country's children, it is also an opportunity to institutionalize stupidity.
I am really surprised there is so little push back on this.
.
.
.Big push back here in Kentucky. Doubt it will do any good in the short term as our Governor has already said he is going to Nuke anti-Common core stuff because he is term limited, and doesn't really care about people anymore. He also has a spot in the Obama Administration for the rest of that term lasts.
