— Gabriel Malor Happy Thursday.
My pal the Anchoress had some thoughts about the "Great-Gay-Marriage-Wedding-Cake-Debacle-of-2014" that everyone should read.
Rep. Camp's new tax reform plan singles out the makers of violent video games for disfavorable tax treatment.
Townhall's Guy Benson went on a Twitter rampage after Sen. Reid claimed on the Senate floor that every person claiming to be harmed by Obamacare is lying.
Nightmare Fuel: I didn't know about this until the report was released yesterday, but there was apparently a NASA spacesuit malfunction in which the wearer could have drowned during a space walk. Yes, drowned in space.
The Republican fight to retake the Senate just seriously improved with the Ken Buck-Cory Gardner switch.
This is how the zombie apocalypse starts, I think.

A Mississippi woman says she waged a nearly three-week battle to get pictures of Bible Scripture printed, after the photo department at a national chain store insisted that her images of Gospel inspiration violated copyright laws.
Hey Walgreen's I don't think the bible has ever been "copyrighted" as there were no copyright laws when it was written and if it did even Mickey Mouse can't get it extended for a millennium.

A short story today, because I'm teetering on the edge of a banning:
During the casting for Gone With the Wind, Katharine Hepburn was particularly insistent that she was born to play the Southern belle. "I am Scarlett O'Hara!" she would insist to anyone who would listen. Finally, she managed to wangle an audience with producer David O. Selznick.
"That part was practically written for me!" she told Selznick, who only shook his head. "Well, why not?" she demanded.
Selznick looked her in the eyes. "I can't imagine Rhett Butler chasing you for ten years."

I looked at those plans a few days ago on the "leak". It has a few good points, it totally ignores some grievous crap in the credits category, and it has some bad points.
But what bothers me the most is, like every negotiating tactic Boner ever does, he starts out the negotiation with a compromise. So we are already half-way in the hole at the start and by the time Boner is done all the good points will be gone, a bunch of new bad ones will be added, and Boner will get a new dam some where and a sack of magic beans.

Did you actually read the article? The woman wanted unauthorized copies of someone else's photo and graphic design, which is illegal and wrong even if there's a Bible verse accompanying it.
If she'd just tried to get photo prints of her favorite verse with no stolen image, no problem.

The "Ken Buck/Cory Gardner switch" is emblematic of why conservatives are fed up with the GOP. It's backroom cynical politics of the worst kind. It's the establishment trying again to freeze out a legitimate conservative candidate: Owen Hill.

Yesterday I heard a well-known lawyer in this parts talking about the Arizona legislation (we're not in Arizona), and the problem seems to be, from their perspective, that if Arizona wants to allow businesses to discriminate against gay people, they are going to lose out on tons of business.
The logic just floors me. I can't stand listening to lawyers anyway, because they don't use reason. Really, they don't.
But this one is particularly egregious. How does one turn this around and make it about discrimination?
Anything to get their way, I guess. And people are too stupid to realize they're being bamboozled, again. Or is that still?

Which still could be wrong. The text of the KJV is public domain, but recent translations probably aren't, unless the author publisher specifically releases it into the public domain. And Bible publishers own the copyright to their instantiation of the work...illustrations, footnotes, font and coloring.
I have a copy of the New International Version within arm's reach (despite the fact I have made God cry by being too ugly to be lovable and too stupid to get knocked up without a husband...eh); the front page says the International Bible Society has copyrighted it in 1973 and 1984, and they grant permission to copy passages only for services and instruction, and only less than a thousand copies.
All seems reasonable to me. Jesus was generous but he never insisted the labor of others be stolen from them for his followers' personal gain.

I'd expect them to lose their state/local licenses at minimum. You're free to believe whatever you want, but you're not free to make a living unless you do what you're told.
Which to be fair is not just gay stuff, but all kinds of eco- and "health"- stuff anymore. You can smoke, but you can't operate a business that allows smoking on the premises. Etc.
Posted by: HR at February 27, 2014 03:48 AM (hO8IJ)
The debate is not over whether or not the bakery should bake the cake, the debate is over whether or not the gov't should force the bakery to bake the cake against their religious conscience. The fact that erstwhile conservatives don't see a problem with that shows how little most people - including conservatives - actually understand the concept of freedom.
Sure, some people think it is silly not to bake the cake and scoff at it. Other people of the same religion think you should bake the cake in order to "reach out" to the gay couple. And it is fine to have that debate.
What is not fine, is for the gov't to step in and force the bakery to serve the cake. That is the problem and anyone who doesn't understand that is either an idiot or a liberal.
Either we have freedom of religion wherein I am free to follow the dictates of my religion, or we do not have freedom of religion. You telling me that you (or the gov't) are going to pick and chose which part of my religious beliefs are "kosher" or "important" or "central" is telling me I don't have freedom of religion. What I have then is the freedom to follow the state sanctioned religion - which is exactly the opposite of why this country was founded.
the fact that amongst alleged conservatives we are having this argument is baffling.
Do I think it is silly to refuse to bake a cake because it is being purchased for a gay wedding? Yes, I think that is silly. I don't believe selling that cake is a sin. But that is not my call to make. And it certainly is not the gov't's call to make.
I also don't think people should wear turbans at work or have shaggy beards. Should the gov't force all Muslims and sheiks to not wear turbans and shave? Why not? How is that different? What, someone's right to puchase something is greater than my right to religious freedom?
I am truly aghast at what people who think they are conservative believe. No wonder there are so many silly GOP apologists amongst the "right."

A lot of Obama's stubborn resistance against the Keystone Pipeline has been due to the fact that Warren Buffett owns BNSF which transports oil by rail and a pipeline would cost him a lot of business. Given the Chicago style of governance that characterizes this administration, I suspect that this may be a warning shot to Buffett to shake him down for heavy Democrat campaign contributions in this November elections.

The Anchoress is wrong in that she uses the fact of Christ's associating with sinners to argue for cooperating with sin.
And the bakers struck just that Christian example. They explicitly offered services to all but not cooperation with the perverting of what Catholics believe to be a Sacrament.

What is not fine, is for the gov't to step in and force the bakery to serve the cake. That is the problem and anyone who doesn't understand that is either an idiot or a liberal.
-----------
Or both.
Here's the thing - maybe the bakery is philosophically wrong. Maybe it is making a mistake. BUT SO WHAT? Aren't we supposed to be free to make our own mistakes, to live our lives the way we see fit without authority being all judgmental? Like Ace says, speech and actions that authority agrees with needs no protection...it's the speech and actions that are considered controversial that require the protection. Saying you'll protect stuff you agree with is not a Profile In Courage.
What's happening here is the Gay-Stapo (I love that term) is using government to win an argument. It's a crass application of the logical fallacy of an Appeal to Authority: "hey, the government says you MUST do this, so you will, and because of that you're wrong in your beliefs." And the fact that they are misusing government to this end is the real obscenity in all of this.

Do I think it is silly to refuse to bake a cake because it is being purchased for a gay wedding? Yes, I think that is silly. I don't believe selling that cake is a sin. But that is not my call to make. And it certainly is not the gov't's call to make.
If you've ever been a part of a wedding, you know that it's not like you're buying a cake off the shelf and setting it up yourself.
You're actually having the baker participate in the wedding by having to be there, set up the cake, make sure nothing goes wrong, etc...
So, yeah, not "just baking a cake."

I can agree with basic health and fire codes as long as it can be shown the ones they propose are satisfying a clear danger to the public. And I do mean clear and compelling.
Of course we lost all property rights with Kelo anyway.
If a business owner wants to NOT serve anyone for any reason that is their call. It may be stupid, it may show bigotry, and it will probably lose them a LOT of customers. But that is (or should be) his right.
People have a right to be stupid.

Also, when gay activists claimed they wouldn't force Christians to participate in gay marriages, they were obviously lying. Now, of course, they are back-pedaling, "We only meant churches and clergy wouldn't be forced to participate." Saying you have freedom of religion only within your church is like saying you only have freedom of speech in your living room. This once again demonstrates that the people who qhine the loudest about "I don't want other people forcing their values on me," are the people most eager to force their values on everybody else.
Also, the gay activist left won again by being obnoxious. This does not mean they are going to become less obnoxious in the future.

They were freakin' friends!!
This whole thing was painted as one guy being bullied by another, and it was completely not true. Everyone knew that from the beginning, but it was a cause they wanted to get behind (homophobia in the NFL), so they deliberately lied and avoided all discussion of what really happened.
One guy broke down, for whatever reason. Maybe he's gay, and he finally figured out Incognito was not going to have sex with him. We don't know, because the league and the media have protected him from ever having to explain what he was doing, or why he was doing it.
The other guy is left looking like the jerk (which he is, but that's beside the point). And now we have the league becoming the language police.
Congrats, NFL. Just when I think you can't sink any lower in ruining a great game, you top yourselves (pun intended).

Whether it's the Alutes in Alaska, federal judges in Texas, or bills re-affirming the right of association, perhaps we should take a page out of Andrew Jackson's playbook.
They have made their ruling, now let us see them enforce it.
I pray that Texas will find ways to further get off the federal teat of easy money. This will enable us to tell them to go pound sand next time they seek to lord over us. And I also pray that other states will endeavor to do the same.

Its impressively long list of demands includes (but is certainly not limited to):
- Enrollment quotas for black and Latino students of “at least 10 percent each”
- An outright ban on the use of the terms “illegal aliens, illegal immigrants” and other terms the students don’t like
- A policy against hate speech that strongly punishes offenders
- Increased enrollment, financial aid and legal help for illegal aliens
- Gender-neutral bathrooms in every campus building
- Queer studies coursework in every department
- Compulsory cultural sensitivity training for professors
- Mandatory coursework on the theme of social justice
- Use of the preferred gender pronouns for all students and staff
- Conversion of all ethic studies programs into free-standing departments
- A rule making The Dartmouth Review, the school’s conservative paper, stop using the word “Dartmouth” in its name if it ever uses the word “Indian” again
The shadowy group of insistent students said in its menacing email that the goal of its multitude of demands is to end the “institutional violence” caused by “racism, classism, sexism, heterosexism, and ableism.”

It is not as if the Bill was to ban homosexuals from getting a fucking cake baked, it was to protect people with a religious belief to NOT be forced to violate their belief for the sake of secular humanism or whatever flavor of religion or religious practice is now in vogue. Today it is homosexuality, tomorrow chucking you kids into the volcano or whatever twerking disgust the popular culture will endorse.
The homosexuals could get their damn cake made probably in 90% of bake shops but they now go out of their way to find some mom and pop outfit that is following their religion to force them to do something that those people consider a violation of their faith. So it is not about being served, but it is now abundantly clear this is about forcing all segments of society, even the last holdouts to not only serve you, but to roundly applaud your choices. This is fascism and tyranny undisguised.
What happened in Arizona yesterday is a clear signal that we have ceased to be a nation that even considers a Christian morality in our makeup, or that we can freely practice a faith that does no harm to others, but any expression that does not kiss the ass of popular morality must be stamped out and excluded from any public expression.
This is the exact opposite of freedom or religion, this is now a State ministered and approved religion and woe to any that disagree. We do not have to bow to Islam, we are inventing our own fascistic-religious system. No wonder the Left and popular culture find common cause with Islam.
No wonder a President raised in the vanguard of such thinking has no condemnation for Iran, no backing of protestors in Venezuela, ignored the attempted revolution in Iran, and backed a Muslim Brotherhood government in Egypt, all the while ignoring the next movement in Egypt to overthrow this new despot with the largest political protests in history.
Good luck to the Ukrainians being shot to death for freedom's sake you will get no help from America, as we are busy making sure homosexuals do not get hurt feelings, and nobody looks with disapproval on anyone...well except Christians.

purchased for a gay wedding? Yes, I think that is silly. I don't believe
selling that cake is a sin. But that is not my call to make. And it
certainly is not the gov't's call to make.
Posted by: GMan at February 27, 2014 07:55 AM (sxq57)
Fair enough. But my point remains - it is not for me or the gov't to decide whether or not the baker should do it.

I don't know about Gabe specifically, but I do know that taken as a whole, the entirety of the gay marriage lobby promised precisely that.
I (for the record) support removing the government entirely from marriage. Any two adults should be permitted to enter any legal contract they wish. If they'd like to get a religious topper, that's between them and their church. The state has no role there.
I am, however, furious (and unsurprised) to see that the gay marriage lobby no longer seeks tolerance - their original goal - and now demands support and celebration. No. You're an adult. Sleep with whomever you choose. Not my business. Tolerance is accepting that you're making different choices than I. That part's easy.
What's being demanded, though, is that we teach our children that having two dads is the same as having a mom and dad, that we sue into oblivion any individual or business whose values differ from the gay lobby's and that the force of the state be brought to bear on any who don't sufficiently praise our homosexual citizens.
Eff that.

Society can’t entirely sever itself from its roots in the environment, but neither should it organize itself as an elaboration of closed-loop ecology. To view ourselves as an organic part of an ecosystem, constrained to scrimping along on its resources as efficiently as possible, is to place too heavy a burden on ecosystems to sustain us. There is no way such a conception of civilization can satisfy the social imperative of economic growth and improved living standards and accommodate what green consciousness values most in nature – its otherness, its autonomy from utilitarian ends, and its purposeless effusions of beauty.
Environmentalists often talk of the “ecosystem services” the environment provides to society, but we must be equally mindful of the benefits that human technological genius can afford to ecosystems. Stewardship of the planet requires that we continue to unshackle ourselves from ecosystems, and ecosystems from us.

President Obama's overall approval rating is now 41 percent, a dip of five points from last month and similar to what it was in December. Fifty-one percent disapprove of the job he is doing, up four points from last month.
More specifically, Mr. Obama gets low marks for his handling of both foreign policy (39 percent approve) and the economy (38 percent approve).

Good morning from Sydney way way Down Under...
It's Friday and I have a day off to babysit my gorgeous grandkiddie as his Mum is crook and needs time out - so a choice - a day with my little gorgeous boy or work? Easy as I have a zillion hours of leave...
Sorry for being OT but this time difference has me on a different wave length
Firstly - I have a couple of lovely lesbian friends who lead quiet lives minding their own business and they are horrified at the antics of the gay activists - it's quite upsetting for them really
Secondly I was reading about biscuits and gravy??? For us heathens down here a biscuit is a sweet thing - you call them cookies and so gravy poured over a cookie sounds vile
So I had to bing biscuit - so it's like a scone but with gravy? Really?
Scones are meant to have jam and cream on them!
Thirdly to shut these bloody gay activists up I'll bake their bloody wedding cake for them - and send it over to them (by sea)
I have expert cake making qualifications - I can bake a cake from scratch, I can mix up icing, and I can stick candles on it in a nice arrangement
Fourthly, there is a local blues band here called Collard Greens and Gravy - always wondered what collard greens are... never bothered to look it up until tonight after reading the ONT
Again, learning stuff via this site!

Not as sweet, or a dense, as a scone really. So kind of like a scone, but not really. And you don't use brown gravy, but "sawmill gravy" (sausage gravy), which is basically just a roux, some milk, salt & pepper, and some crumbled breakfast sausage.

Aussie, making sausage gravy is as easy as falling off a log....
Basic recipe:
Cook up your sausage (has to be crumbles...) and remove from the pan. LEAVE THE FAT.
Put in some flour, about a 1/4 cup and mix it up. Pour in 2 cups of whole milk while stirring it up (gotta pour it in gradually...). Let it simmer until it's fairly thick (it will thicken further as it stands, so the trick is removing it from the heat so it doesn't get too thick later...knowing exactly when is a criteria for being a good wife...
). Add the sausage back in, give it a stir, and offer it to your grateful family.

Posted by: naturalfake at February 27, 2014 09:11 AM (KBvAm)"
Well, yes that would make logical sense but
1) our betters have decided that we are going to have immigration amnesty regardless of how anybody votes
2) Blacks will not vote for Republicans. I have seen this dance going on for 30 years. It is just not ever going to happen.
That leads me to the conclusion that the Republican Party has the choice of either withering away or some new coalition survival strategy. I think that a FSA coalition is inevitable. The new Republican slogan will be, "We will take away free shit from Blacks and give it to Mexicans." What do you think? Catchy, no?

(Courtesy of: Homesick Texan)
Ingredients:
Two cups of flour
1 tablespoon of baking powder
1 teaspoon of sugar (can add more to taste)
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1 stick of butter, cold (8 tablespoons)
3/4 cup of buttermilk, cream or half-and-half
Method:
Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.
Mix all the dry ingredients together.
Cut the stick of butter into pieces, and work into the flour mixture with your hands or a pastry blender until it resembles pea-sized crumbs.
Add the liquid, mixing until a bit loose and sticky.
Pour dough out on a floured surface, and knead for a minute. Dough should be smooth and no longer wet. You can sprinkle more flour on the surface if you find itÂ’s sticking.
Take dough into a ball, and hit it with a rolling pin, turning it and folding it in half every few whacks. Do this for a couple of minutes.
Roll out dough until itÂ’s 1/4 of an inch thick, and then fold it in half.
Using a round cutter (can use a glass or a cup if donÂ’t have a biscuit cutter) cut out your biscuits from folded dough.
Place on a greased baking sheet close together (so they rise up not out), and bake for 15 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.
Makes 10-12 biscuits.
If you donÂ’t want to roll and cut them out, after kneading and beating the dough you can drop the dough onto the baking sheet with a spoon. TheyÂ’re not as symmetrical (dropped biscuits are also known as cat head biscuits) but theyÂ’re no less delicious.

Yes that's how I make my Aussie scones - on the benchtop using a glass to cut the shape
Sorry to have derailed this thread into a cooking one...

Slang is a wondrous thing!
BTW I like your posts - I'm rediscovering my religious beliefs after years of not caring one way or the other...
Your posts are quite inspirational for me...

We have turned a dangerous corner where Freedom must be enforced by essentially over-whelming government force (via a legal system and a tax code) to ensure that the right people are in charge of allocating the re-distribution of Freedom.

Before leaving, thanks for the Gallup numbers on LGBT conservative and GOP voting. Run the numbers: we aren't talking about a lot of votes here to begin with (and I'm willing to bet those votes are clustered in urban areas that largely vote Democrat anyway), but if GOP candidates can attract 60% of the indie vote (as they try to do in a general election), that number plus the GOP vote is pretty damn close to a plurality of LGBT vote totals.
I think the Dems cater to this demographic mainly because it is capable of donating lots of money to Democrat candidates.
I don't think the vote itself matters very much to them.

Seriously, this is getting very creepy, folks. The only place I've seen this posted was on ZeroHedge, who themselves only reported on it because it was posted to Reddit...and repeatedly deleted by moderators.
A story about government manipulation and censorship of the internet apparently is being censored from the internet.

Spoken For Truth
It is clear this Anchoress never heard of "the slippery slope" or "getting their foot in the door". How, she asks, can you witness to someone you will not serve? Yes, Christian doctor, just perform that abortion and explain to the nice lady how taking human life, especially innocent life, is like, um, wrong and stuff.

“Here’s the thing: I grew up here in Fort Greene. I grew up here in New York. It’s changed. And why does it take an influx of white New Yorkers in the south Bronx, in Harlem, in Bed Stuy, in Crown Heights for the facilities to get better? The garbage wasn’t picked up every (expletive) day when I was living in 165 Washington Park. P.S. 20 was not good. P.S. 11. Rothschild 294. The police weren’t around. When you see white mothers pushing their babies in strollers, three o’clock in the morning on 125th Street, that must tell you something.”
... don't you know it. When the White show up, they ruin things by having the garbage picked-up, schools improved, and more police patrols. I mean, what could be worse than that ?

Amen
The most abused and misrepresented story in the Bible. The wicked always say, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone", but they always leave out the last thing Christ says to the women, "Go and sin no more".

The study, published Wednesday in the journal Nature Climate Change, estimates that a massive field of wind turbines could slow hurricane wind speeds by as much as 92 miles per hour and reduce storm surges by 79 percent in some situations.
Stanford University professor Mark Z. Jacobson, one of the reportÂ’s three authors, said the study marks the first time researchers have identified the potential hurricane-weakening effect of offshore wind turbines.
“If people are on the edge of whether they want to do offshore wind in the East Coast or Gulf Coast, I think this should be an additional motivation for doing it,” Jacobson said.
Jacobson and his team conducted the study by using computer models that simulated some of the most devastating and well-known storms in recent years, including 2012′s Hurricane Isaac and Hurricane Sandy and 2005′s Hurricane Katrina. They combined that with models of how wind turbines interact with the environment and simulated what would have happened if massive numbers of turbines were put in the way of those storms.
