— Gabriel Malor

Happy Thursday.

My pal the Anchoress had some thoughts about the "Great-Gay-Marriage-Wedding-Cake-Debacle-of-2014" that everyone should read.

Rep. Camp's new tax reform plan singles out the makers of violent video games for disfavorable tax treatment.

Townhall's Guy Benson went on a Twitter rampage after Sen. Reid claimed on the Senate floor that every person claiming to be harmed by Obamacare is lying.

Nightmare Fuel: I didn't know about this until the report was released yesterday, but there was apparently a NASA spacesuit malfunction in which the wearer could have drowned during a space walk. Yes, drowned in space.

The Republican fight to retake the Senate just seriously improved with the Ken Buck-Cory Gardner switch.

This is how the zombie apocalypse starts, I think.

1 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Thursday, February 27, 2014.  On this day in 1939 the Supreme Court ruled that sit-down strikes violate property owners' rights and are therefore illegal.  And where is Ted "the swimmer's" much touted Stare Decisis? (NLRB v. Fansteel Metallurgical Coorp.)  Property owners no longer have any rights in today's tyrannical oligarchy.

16 Aleut village has been fighting for 30 years to build an 11 mile gravel road to a town with an airport so they can fly people who need emergency medical treatment to Anchorage.  The Obamanites shot it down citing need to protect wild life.  I would demand, thorough a court, how a one lane gravel road will impact wildlife.   And to top it off they State and the Tribe have offered over 50,000 acres of land to offset the 1,000 acres needed for the road!

The Interior Department, though, argued that giving up refuge land would set a bad precedent.

19 people have died as a result of there being no connecting road.  ItÂ’s the delta smelt all over again.  People aren't worth a shit when it comes to wildlife, even bugs.

There is ample reason to believe that a sharp cooling of the climate would bring disastrous results for human civilization.” The science is settled.

A short story today, because I'm teetering on the edge of a banning:

During the casting for Gone With the Wind, Katharine Hepburn was particularly insistent that  she was born to play the Southern belle.   "I am Scarlett O'Hara!" she would insist to anyone who would listen.  Finally, she managed to wangle an audience with producer David O. Selznick.

"That part was practically written for me!" she told Selznick, who only shook his head.  "Well, why not?" she demanded.

Selznick looked her in the eyes.  "I can't imagine Rhett Butler chasing you for ten years."

I looked at those plans a few days ago on the "leak".  It has a few good points, it totally ignores some grievous crap in the credits category, and it has some bad points.

But what bothers me the most is, like every negotiating tactic Boner ever does, he starts out the negotiation with a compromise.  So we are already half-way in the hole at the start and by the time Boner is done all the good points will be gone, a bunch of new bad ones will be added, and Boner will get a new dam some where and a sack of magic beans.

77 Journalism is where the tough questions are asked and in depth research reveals results... Because journalism's 3 days on the job "earn" a journalist the Cronkite Award. “The theme of the evening is global education and service,” the tip sheet reads, according to the Post. “All press are required to stay strictly on message. Any press who ask guests or Mr. Farrow about off-message topics will be immediately escorted out of the event.” How it goes for 'the beautiful people'.//Hey, it worked for Obama. Is this to be the other half of the democrat party's ticket dream team potus '16?

And what did we get? The most profligate spending and expansion of the government in history until the coming of SCOAMF. Winning elections only matters when principled conservatives win them.

The "Ken Buck/Cory Gardner switch" is emblematic of why conservatives are fed up with the GOP.  It's backroom cynical politics of the worst kind.  It's the establishment trying again to freeze out a legitimate conservative candidate:  Owen Hill.

83 My pal the Anchoress had some thoughts about the "Great-Gay-Marriage-Wedding-Cake-Debacle-of-2014" that everyone should read. When I ran a business I provided health insurance to my employees. That insurance paid for abortions. I signed the check that paid for that insurance. I paid for that abortion. I did not want to pay for anyone's abortion. Using the 'conscience exemption' provided I dropped that part of the policy. The Anchoress perhaps thinks I should have just shut up and paid, and be civil about it. Maybe it's time for her to unplug her keyboard if she's tired of the fight.

84 75  What specifically do you feel The Anchoress is wrong about? She is a faithful practicing RC and believes that marriage should be between a man and a woman. She doesn't feel that people should be made to violate their consciences by baking a cake but she sees the idea that baking such a cake could be a tool for evangelization and she deplores the strident shouting of each side.

97 I am apparently  missing the point of the gay cakes kerfuffle.

Yesterday I heard  a well-known lawyer in this parts talking about the Arizona legislation (we're not in Arizona), and the problem seems to be, from their perspective, that  if Arizona wants to allow businesses to discriminate against gay people, they are going to lose out on tons of business.

The logic just floors me.  I can't stand listening to lawyers anyway, because they don't use reason.  Really, they don't.

But this one is particularly egregious.  How does one turn this around and  make it about discrimination?

Anything to get their way, I guess.  And people are too stupid to realize they're being bamboozled, again.  Or is that still?

98 90 Posted by: MTF at February 27, 2014 07:23 AM (SMd3b) You just made my argument. When you bring articles of impeachment, you are laying out the case against SCOAMF in no uncertain terms. If the GOP stood behind Ted Cruz, if it had fought tooth and nail with every Constitutional and parliamentary procedure at its disposal since 2009 to stop this insanity - if it attacked the evil instead of the people trying to do good the message would get out. In other words, you bring up articles of impeachment and stand behind it loudly. People are suffering and dying because of Obamacare. They will understand and support it. Do what Reagan did and go over the heads of the MFM direct to the public. It can and I think should be done, come what may.

Which still could be wrong.  The text of the KJV is public domain, but recent translations probably aren't, unless the author publisher specifically releases it into the public domain.  And Bible publishers own the copyright to their instantiation of the work...illustrations, footnotes, font and coloring.

I have a copy of the New International Version within arm's reach (despite the fact I have made God cry by being too ugly to be lovable and too stupid to get knocked up without a husband...eh); the front page says the International Bible Society has copyrighted it in 1973 and 1984, and they grant permission to copy passages only for services and instruction, and only less than a thousand copies.

I'd expect them to lose their state/local licenses at minimum.  You're free to believe whatever you want, but you're not free to make a living unless you do what you're told.

Which to be fair is not just gay stuff, but all kinds of eco- and "health"- stuff anymore.  You can smoke, but you can't operate a business that allows smoking on the premises.  Etc.

Posted by: HR at February 27, 2014 03:48 AM (hO8IJ)

132 The Anchoress entirely misses the point.

The debate is not over whether or not the bakery should bake the cake, the debate is over whether or not the gov't should force the bakery to bake the cake against their religious conscience.  The fact that erstwhile conservatives don't see a problem with that shows how little most people - including conservatives - actually understand the concept of freedom.

Sure, some people think it is silly not to bake the cake and scoff at it.  Other people of the same religion think you should bake the cake in order to "reach out" to the gay couple.  And it is fine to have that debate.

What is not fine, is for the gov't to step in and force the bakery to serve the cake. That is the problem and anyone who doesn't understand that is either an idiot or a liberal.

Either we have freedom of religion wherein I am free to follow the dictates of my religion, or we do not have freedom of religion.  You telling me that you (or the gov't) are going to pick and chose which part of my religious beliefs are "kosher" or "important" or "central" is telling me I don't have freedom of religion.  What I have then is the freedom to follow the state sanctioned religion - which is exactly the opposite of why this country was founded.

the fact that amongst alleged conservatives we are having this argument is baffling.

Do I think it is silly to refuse to bake a cake because it is being purchased for a gay wedding?  Yes, I think that is silly.  I don't believe selling that cake is a sin.  But that is not my call to make.  And it certainly is not the gov't's call to make.

I also don't think people should wear turbans at work or have shaggy beards.  Should the gov't force all Muslims and sheiks to not wear turbans and shave?  Why not?  How is that different?  What, someone's right to puchase something is greater than my right to religious freedom?

I am truly aghast at what people who think they are conservative believe.  No wonder there are so many silly GOP apologists amongst the "right."

A lot of Obama's stubborn resistance against the Keystone Pipeline has been due to the fact that Warren Buffett owns BNSF which transports oil by rail and a pipeline would cost him a lot of business.  Given the Chicago style of governance that characterizes this administration, I suspect that this may be a warning shot to Buffett to shake him down for heavy Democrat campaign contributions in this November elections.

The Anchoress is wrong in that she uses the fact of Christ's associating with sinners to argue for cooperating with sin.

And the bakers struck just that Christian example. They explicitly offered services to all but not cooperation with the perverting of what Catholics believe to be a Sacrament.

143 Relaxation tipe Take a Coffee Break Sit down with your favorite hot beverage, blow across the top to cool it, and then inhale the fragrant steam. “Take a few minutes to do this every time you have a hot drink,” advises psychologist and stress expert Ronald G. Nathan, Ph.D., coauthor of Stress Management: A Comprehensive Guide to Wellness . “Breathing deeply, slow and from the belly, is the opposite of what we do when we’re stressed, so it resets everything toward relaxation.” By also holding the cup with your hands wrapped around it you also loosen a relaxation response in your fingers and hands which carries into your brain.

What is not fine, is for the gov't to step in and force the bakery to serve the cake. That is the problem and anyone who doesn't understand that is either an idiot or a liberal.

-----------

Or both.

Here's the thing - maybe the bakery is philosophically wrong.  Maybe  it is  making a mistake.  BUT SO WHAT?  Aren't we supposed to be free to make our own mistakes, to live our lives the way we see fit without authority being all judgmental?  Like Ace says, speech and actions that authority agrees with needs no protection...it's the speech and actions that are considered controversial that require the protection.  Saying you'll protect stuff you agree with is not a Profile In Courage.

What's happening here is the Gay-Stapo (I love that term) is using government to win an argument.  It's a crass application of the logical fallacy of an Appeal to Authority:  "hey, the government says you MUST do this, so you will, and because of that you're wrong in your beliefs."  And the fact that they are misusing government to this end is the real obscenity in all of this.

Do I think it is silly to refuse to bake a cake because it is being purchased for a gay wedding? Yes, I think that is silly. I don't believe selling that cake is a sin. But that is not my call to make. And it certainly is not the gov't's call to make.

If you've ever been a part of a wedding, you know that it's not like you're buying a cake off the shelf and setting it up yourself.

You're actually having the baker participate in the wedding by having to be there, set up the cake, make sure nothing goes wrong, etc...

So, yeah, not "just baking a cake."

149 I have a problem with the government forcing a private business to do anything.  It is a violation of property rights.

I can agree with basic health and fire codes as long as it can be shown the ones they propose are satisfying a clear danger to the public.  And I do mean clear and compelling.

Of course we lost all property rights with Kelo anyway.

If a business owner wants to NOT serve anyone for any reason that is their call.  It may be stupid, it may show bigotry, and it will probably lose them a LOT of customers.  But that is (or should be) his right.

People have a right to be stupid.

150  Gay people have come off looking like self-centered, lying jerks. Brutally honest here: If your attitude is "My special day will be rueeeeened unless I can force someone who doesn't want to be there to participate," that's messed up and you're a self-centered jerk. Healthy, well-adjusted people do not think that way; messed up jerks think that way.

Also, when gay activists claimed they wouldn't force Christians to participate in gay marriages, they were obviously lying. Now, of course, they are back-pedaling, "We only meant churches and clergy wouldn't be forced to participate." Saying you have freedom of religion only within your church is like saying you only have freedom of speech in your living room. This once again demonstrates that the people who qhine the loudest about "I don't want other people forcing their values on me," are the people most eager to force their values on everybody else.

Also, the gay activist left won again by being obnoxious. This does not mean they are going to become less obnoxious in the future.

They were freakin' friends!!

This  whole thing was painted as one guy being bullied by another, and it was completely not true.  Everyone knew that from the  beginning, but it was a cause they wanted to get behind (homophobia in the NFL), so they deliberately lied and avoided all discussion of what really happened.

One guy broke down, for whatever reason.  Maybe he's gay, and he finally figured out Incognito was not going to have sex with him.  We don't know, because the league and the media have protected him from ever having to explain what he was doing, or why he was doing it.

The other guy is left looking like the jerk (which he is, but that's beside the point).  And now we have the league becoming the language police.

Congrats, NFL.  Just when I think  you can't sink any lower in ruining a great game, you top yourselves (pun intended).

156 75. and 85. "but she sees the idea that baking such a cake could be a tool for evangelization and she deplores the strident shouting of each side." Posted by: FenelonSpoke at February 27, 2014 07:15 AM (XyM/Y) Easy for a full time cleric to advance. Or a blogger full of advice for others, advice for situations not really a problem for the blogger. But really shaky ground in this world of real law suit threats that ruin you for a small mom and pop business not owned by a Church. To presume the "right" to religious behavior in American daily life today? Ever since Bush's sacred-interventionist program (faith based initiative buying off congregations and pastors in trade for right to censor the Pulpit terminating both freedom of religion and of speech), even the wealthiest universal Church is being sued by the US Federal Government for not providing abortion services on call at Church hospitals and on Church benefit packages (example). These days, the only ones promoting their own version of "old-time religion" are the hateful Westboro "in your face" congregation of curs and mongrels. In a law court, a business person evangelizing Biblical positions with a customer not of the same faith now faces another precedence OPPOSING freedom of religion and denying free speech. Because of hate crimes ...or something: "See, Westboro!" in the charitable person's face. Hypocritical political activist bigots take immense offense to the least suggestion that a cake baker use the contract to bake as opportunity to express a personal choice contrary to the customer's. The activists won once, and now they've won again.

Its impressively long list of demands includes (but is certainly not limited to):

- Enrollment quotas for black and Latino students of “at least 10 percent each”
- An outright ban on the use of the terms “illegal aliens, illegal immigrants” and other terms the students don’t like
- A policy against hate speech that strongly punishes offenders
- Increased enrollment, financial aid and legal help for illegal aliens
- Gender-neutral bathrooms in every campus building
- Queer studies coursework in every department
- Compulsory cultural sensitivity training for professors
- Mandatory coursework on the theme of social justice
- Use of the preferred gender pronouns for all students and staff
- Conversion of all ethic studies programs into free-standing departments
- A rule making The Dartmouth Review, the school’s conservative paper, stop using the word “Dartmouth” in its name if it ever uses the word “Indian” again

The shadowy group of insistent students said in its menacing email that the goal of its multitude of demands is to end the “institutional violence” caused by “racism, classism, sexism, heterosexism, and ableism.”

Posted by: no good deed at February 27, 2014 04:16 AM (vBhbc)

211 I read the Anchoress article Gab mentions and it misses the point as completely as the MSM, or McCain, or Romney, or the legislators that cannot explain a Bill they wrote.  Is it even arguable that the primary founding impulse for this country was for religious freedom?  So now we have a pop-culture-religion that if you do not obey this NEW religion you will be made to suffer as it was  threatened to Arizona.

It is not as if the Bill was to ban homosexuals from getting a fucking cake baked, it was to protect people with a religious belief to NOT be forced to violate their belief for the sake of secular humanism or whatever flavor of religion or religious practice is now in vogue.  Today it is homosexuality, tomorrow chucking you kids into the volcano or whatever twerking disgust the popular culture will endorse.

The homosexuals could get their damn cake made probably in 90% of bake shops but they now go out of their way to find some mom and pop outfit that is following their religion to force them to do something that those people consider a violation of their faith.  So it is not about being served, but it is now abundantly clear this is about forcing all segments of society, even the last holdouts to not only serve you, but to roundly applaud your choices.   This is fascism and tyranny undisguised.

What  happened in Arizona yesterday is a clear signal that we have ceased to be a nation that even considers a Christian morality in our makeup, or that we can freely practice a faith that does no harm to others, but any expression that does not kiss the ass of popular morality must be stamped out and excluded from any public expression.

This is the exact opposite of freedom or religion, this is now a State ministered and approved religion and woe to any that disagree.  We do not have to bow to Islam, we are inventing our own fascistic-religious system.   No wonder the Left and popular culture find common cause with Islam.

No wonder a President raised in the vanguard of such thinking has no condemnation for Iran, no backing of protestors in Venezuela, ignored the attempted revolution in Iran, and backed a Muslim Brotherhood government in Egypt, all the while ignoring the next movement in Egypt to overthrow this new despot with the largest political protests in history.

Good luck to the Ukrainians being shot to death for freedom's sake you will get no help from America, as we are busy making sure homosexuals do not get hurt feelings, and nobody looks with disapproval on anyone...well except Christians.

But asking me, as a Christian to participate in something my faith and conscience objects to is going too far. 268 I read the Anchoress post, but there's not much there. She just wants to make sure that everyone knows that everyone is an extremist except maybe people who don't say anything. The fact is that every time we hear that there is no slippery slope, there's a Gay Mafia group standing right behind us to shove us down even further. DADT repeal, not enough, States recognizing SSM, not enough, kids taught how to engage in homosexual practices, not enough. They consider anyone not draped in a rainbow flag to be "anti-Civil Rights" and they mean to convert or jail us.

272 Do I think it is silly to refuse to bake a cake because it is being
purchased for a gay wedding? Yes, I think that is silly. I don't believe
selling that cake is a sin. But that is not my call to make. And it
certainly is not the gov't's call to make.

Posted by: GMan at February 27, 2014 07:55 AM (sxq57)

280 Just for the record-a few very important single people: Jesus Christ St Paul - Apostle of Christ Joan of Arc - as a young peasant girl played key role in awakening the Dauphin of France, Charles, in leading fight back against occupying English army. Later burnt at stake for 'heresy. / Mother Teresa - Nun who took vows of chastity and poverty, devoting her life to the service of the poor. Queen Elizabeth I - Famous virgin queen of England. Queen Elizabeth said: "It would please me best if, at the last, a marble stone shall record that this Queen having lived such and such a time, lived and died a virgin. " During her life she was frequently pressured into marriage so she could produce a heir. To Parliament she said: "I have already joined myself in marriage to a husband, namely the kingdom of England." Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906) A prominent American civil rights lawyer who played a leading role in advocating for universal suffrage and votes for women. Emily Dickinson - Poet who lived much of her life in seclusion. Sir Isaac Newton - Although he got engaged in his teens, the relationship fell through, Newton was more interested in science and his scientific investigations coming up with the famous three laws of physics. George Frederic Handel - Great composer who created famous pieces such as Messiah (HWV 56) On composing the Hallelujah Chorus, Handel wrote "Whether I was in my body or out of my body as I wrote it, I know not. God knows." When King George II asked why he wasn’t married, he simply responded with: “I have no time for anything but music.” Nikola Tesla - Nikola Tesla was a unique inventor who threw himself into discovering new advances in electronics and science. He had no interest in marriage and saw sex as a distraction from his life's purpose. A famous actress of the time, Sarah Bernhardt, tried to attract him, but, he merely saw her as a distraction. When asked about marriage, he replied: “I do not think you can name many great inventions that have been made by married men.” Swami Vivekananda. Spiritual teacher and important figure in Indian renaissance of late nineteenth century. A great believer in the virtues of celibacy. "If one wastes the most potent forces of one’s being, one cannot become spiritual. All history teaches us that the great seers of all ages were either monks and ascetics or those who had given up married life; only the pure in life can see God."

I don't know about Gabe specifically, but I do know that taken as a whole, the entirety of the gay marriage lobby promised precisely that.

I (for the record) support removing the government entirely from marriage.  Any two adults should be permitted to enter any legal contract they wish.  If they'd like to get a religious topper, that's between them and their church.  The state has no role there.

I am, however, furious (and unsurprised) to see that the gay marriage lobby no longer seeks tolerance - their original goal - and now demands support and celebration.  No.  You're an adult.  Sleep with whomever you choose.  Not my business.  Tolerance is accepting that you're making different choices than I.  That part's easy.

What's being demanded, though, is that we teach our children that having two dads is the same as having a mom and dad, that we sue into oblivion any individual or business whose values differ from the gay lobby's and that the force of the state be brought to bear on any who don't sufficiently praise our homosexual citizens.

Eff that.

304 The case against using trees and crops as fuel for cars and power plants has grown stronger in recent years. The expansion of corn for ethanol in the American Midwest has worsened water pollution and soil erosion, and has had no benefit in terms of reduced emissions. Europe’s biofuels mandate has resulted in a palm oil boom that has devastated the rain forests of Indonesia and Malaysia, driving orangutans to the brink of extinction. And now efforts like those in Germany to burn wood for fuel, known as “biomass,” have been shown to be no better for climate change than coal—and perhaps even worse.

Society can’t entirely sever itself from its roots in the environment, but neither should it organize itself as an elaboration of closed-loop ecology. To view ourselves as an organic part of an ecosystem, constrained to scrimping along on its resources as efficiently as possible, is to place too heavy a burden on ecosystems to sustain us. There is no way such a conception of civilization can satisfy the social imperative of economic growth and improved living standards and accommodate what green consciousness values most in nature – its otherness, its autonomy from utilitarian ends, and its purposeless effusions of beauty.

Environmentalists often talk of the “ecosystem services” the environment provides to society, but we must be equally mindful of the benefits that human technological genius can afford to ecosystems. Stewardship of the planet requires that we continue to unshackle ourselves from ecosystems, and ecosystems from us.

Good morning from Sydney way way Down Under...

It's Friday and I have a day off to babysit my gorgeous grandkiddie as his Mum is crook and needs time out - so a choice - a day with my little gorgeous boy or work? Easy as I have a zillion hours of leave...

Sorry for being OT but this time difference has me on a different wave length

Firstly - I have a couple of lovely lesbian friends who lead quiet lives minding their own business and they are horrified at the antics of the gay activists - it's quite upsetting for them really

Secondly I was reading about biscuits and gravy??? For us heathens down here a biscuit is a sweet thing - you call them cookies and so gravy poured over a cookie sounds vile

So I had to bing biscuit - so it's like a scone but with gravy? Really?

Scones are meant to have jam and cream on them!

Thirdly to shut these bloody gay activists up I'll bake their bloody wedding cake for them - and send it over to them (by sea)

I have expert cake making qualifications - I can bake a cake from scratch, I can mix up icing, and I can stick candles on it in a nice arrangement

Fourthly, there is a local blues band here called Collard Greens and Gravy - always wondered what collard greens are... never bothered to look it up until tonight after reading the ONT

Again, learning stuff via this site!

326 I would like to add that Anchoress's admirable but naive post highlights why so many churches have slipped into the hypocracy category. Many churches have decided to not just tolerate the gay lifestyle, but to permit same sex weddings and openly gay clergy. Some have for genuine beliefs, but most have because it is PC, they think they are dodging the government hassels, they think they are obtaining tithe money they othewise would lose out on, and have in the back of their mind, they are somehow ministering to these people. Which implodes the entire moral teachings meme of these churches. Talk the talk, but don't walk it. Who wants to belong to a church that simply is a pillar of salt? Whose values and teachings change with society's whims and desires? The church was always supposed to be the bulwark AGAINST those whims and desires, which are normally rooted in the easy, the sinful, the appeal to the basest in humans. The church is supposed to be the support for those fighting against those sins, as being a sinner is so easy to drown in and having something to hang onto is what has kept our society from falling into a sea of sin. Our Founding Fathers knew this, having studied societies that have risen and fallen(Greek and Roman) and provided this framework called the Constitution that firstly promoted freedom of religion. That freedom then tasked the churches with upholding it. Churches who find it expedient to ignore their own teachings under the guise of being "inclusive" and understanding are abdicating that responsibility for their "forty shekels".

Fourthly, there is a local blues band here called Collard Greens and Gravy - always wondered what collard greens are... never bothered to look it up until tonight after reading the ONT *** Biscuits stand alone but are often served with gravy, especially for breakfast. Most often they are served with butter and sometimes with honey. Collard greens are practically a Southern staple. They are cooked with some sort of meat, usually pork, for flavoring. Some folks add pepper-vinegar as well. Other, similar "greens" are Mustard and Turnip greens. I love them all.

332 HR aka Heather Radish is too hard on herself. I've seen pics of her and she's far from ugly. Lots of married women who look like beasts (no offense) and very attractive single peeps. It really has nothing to do with physical attractiveness. (Take a trip to David's Bridal one day if you doubt me.) Sometimes it's just the luck of the draw.

I'll have to try that gravy with sausage in it - with the wonders of Algores invention I will find a recipe for sure

Aussie, making sausage gravy is as easy as falling off a log....

Basic recipe:

Cook up your sausage (has to be crumbles...) and remove from the pan.  LEAVE THE FAT.

Put in some flour, about a 1/4 cup and mix it up.  Pour in 2 cups of whole milk while stirring it up (gotta pour it in gradually...).  Let it simmer until it's fairly thick (it will thicken further as it stands, so the trick is removing it from the heat so it doesn't get too thick later...knowing exactly when is a criteria for being a good wife...    ).  Add the sausage back in, give it a stir, and offer it to your grateful family.

Recalling that encourages me when I'm slathering it on.

354 Gabe, don't cry wolf. You know well that the thriving homosexual community is alive and kicking in AZ, enjoying immense political power, prestige and influence. No one threatens the gay community without suffering for it in AZ. More importantly, most Arizonans couldn't care less whether their peers, friends, coworkers and neighbors are gay or not -- because most Arizonans expect their gay friends not to hold being heterosexual against a person. That is not to say parents don't have reasonable concerns as their young children are being indoctrinated at school to reject "traditional family" since the "cool" ideal lifestyle is gay, the way they are taught to experience. And if you're not gay, you're not acceptable. Hence the libertarian "your rights stop when they invade my rights" Classical Liberal premise for mutual respect. People have the right to "Just Say No" when expected to participate in some event that should by all rights be left to personal choice. I maintain that we each have a right to privacy in our homes, and a right "to thine own self be true" at all times. Your right to privacy has no right to invade my privacy. Proving adult maturity, people can keep sexuality a personal matter, not "in your faces". And no extraneous laws will improve problems. Just add to the heap fueling "frivolous" law suits. Which is your bag for profit.

381 Biscuits
(Courtesy of: Homesick Texan)

Ingredients:
Two cups of flour
1 tablespoon of baking powder
1 teaspoon of sugar (can add more to taste)
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1 stick of butter, cold (8 tablespoons)
3/4 cup of buttermilk, cream or half-and-half

Method:
Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.
Mix all the dry ingredients together.
Cut the stick of butter into pieces, and work into the flour mixture with your hands or a pastry blender until it resembles pea-sized crumbs.
Add the liquid, mixing until a bit loose and sticky.
Pour dough out on a floured surface, and knead for a minute. Dough should be smooth and no longer wet. You can sprinkle more flour on the surface if you find itÂ’s sticking.
Take dough into a ball, and hit it with a rolling pin, turning it and folding it in half every few whacks. Do this for a couple of minutes.
Roll out dough until itÂ’s 1/4 of an inch thick, and then fold it in half.
Using a round cutter (can use a glass or a cup if donÂ’t have a biscuit cutter) cut out your biscuits from folded dough.
Place on a greased baking sheet close together (so they rise up not out), and bake for 15 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.
Makes 10-12 biscuits.

If you donÂ’t want to roll and cut them out, after kneading and beating the dough you can drop the dough onto the baking sheet with a spoon. TheyÂ’re not as symmetrical (dropped biscuits are also known as cat head biscuits) but theyÂ’re no less delicious.

406 LOL, sounds like a lot of trouble for just me. I know what you mean. B'Gal can't tolerate any type of spicy food, so if I want anything with any flavor, I usually wind up eating alone too. I put a small pepper in my collards while they cook down, or at least I used to, in addition to the hamhock.

409 It's like a president getting a Nobel Peace Prize 2 days after his inauguration. Weird... Posted by: J.J. Sefton at February 27, 2014 07:37 AM (olDqf) My Wife and I were in an airport and she said "Obama just won the Nobel Peace Prize." I said "no, he was nominate, but he can't win it, he was just inaugurated and hasn't done anything, yet." She said "no, look" pointing to the CNN screen showing Obama "won it." Many things have angered me since, but nothing has surprised me.

410 Sorry to have derailed this thread into a cooking one... There's been a lot of comment creep in the past week or so, even more than usual. We've been derailed on far worse subjects than food.

411 Freedom means accepting the fact that other people are not always going to behave the way you want them to. Some of us prefer to let people behave in ways we donÂ’t approve of, so long as no one is harmed, rather than have the state force everyone to behave the way it deems appropriate, like an overzealous playground monitor.

Slang is a wondrous thing!

BTW I like your posts - I'm rediscovering my religious beliefs after years of not caring one way or the other...

Your posts are quite inspirational for me...

We have turned a dangerous corner where Freedom must be enforced by essentially over-whelming government force (via a legal system and a tax code) to ensure that the right people are in charge of allocating the re-distribution of Freedom.

Before leaving, thanks for the Gallup numbers on LGBT conservative and GOP voting.  Run the numbers: we aren't talking about a lot of votes here to begin with (and I'm willing to bet those votes are clustered in urban areas that largely vote Democrat anyway), but if GOP candidates can attract 60% of the indie vote (as they try to do in a general election), that number plus the GOP vote is pretty damn close to a plurality of LGBT vote totals.

I think the Dems cater to this demographic mainly because it is capable of donating lots of money to Democrat candidates.

I don't think the vote itself  matters  very much to them.

418 I agree on the mewling from the Anchoress piece. I haven't read one bit of the Gospels which depict Jesus participating in sin to get a point across. He didn't ask for a blow job from the prostitutes nor pay for his disciples to get head. Essentially, that is what the piece is saying the Christian baker should do-bake that penis cake but put a little note on it saying this is not appropriate.

419 Thanks, Aussie, I figured that it meant ill but I thought I;d check Slang is so interesting. My brother-in-law who is English came for a first visit here before he married my sister and he kept talking about wanting to "knock people up". My sister had to explain the difference between what it meant in England and what it meant here. I hope that your daughter who is "crook" gets "un-crook" soon. Thanks, sister. :^) I appreciate your kind words and God bless you and yours.

423 OT: So, another day, another lack of interest in the latest Snowden/Greenwald revelations, about how the governments of the world manipulate the internet via articles and comments, to destroy the reputations of individuals and organizations?

http://bit.ly/1k6dHGh

Seriously, this is getting very creepy, folks. The only place I've seen this posted was on ZeroHedge, who themselves only reported on it because it was posted to Reddit...and repeatedly deleted by moderators.

A story about government manipulation and censorship of the internet apparently is being censored from the internet.

Spoken For Truth

It is clear this Anchoress never heard of "the slippery slope" or "getting their foot in the door". How, she asks, can you witness to someone you will not serve? Yes, Christian doctor, just perform that abortion and explain to the nice lady how taking human life, especially innocent life, is like, um, wrong and stuff.

425 426-sounds about right. As long as you put in a disclaimer, it sounds as though you can do anything. Funny how Jesus said go no and sin no more, not "you got any friends that like to party".

426 According to Lee, with white gentrification comes disruption. The entire rant was transcribed by New York magazine. HereÂ’s an excerpt:

“Here’s the thing: I grew up here in Fort Greene. I grew up here in New York. It’s changed. And why does it take an influx of white New Yorkers in the south Bronx, in Harlem, in Bed Stuy, in Crown Heights for the facilities to get better? The garbage wasn’t picked up every (expletive) day when I was living in 165 Washington Park. P.S. 20 was not good. P.S. 11. Rothschild 294. The police weren’t around. When you see white mothers pushing their babies in strollers, three o’clock in the morning on 125th Street, that must tell you something.”

... don't you know it.  When the White show up, they ruin things by having the garbage picked-up, schools improved, and more police patrols.  I mean, what could be worse than that ?

Amen

The most abused and misrepresented story in the Bible. The wicked always say, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone", but they always leave out the last thing Christ says to the women, "Go and sin no more".

428 HOUSTON — Offshore wind turbines could help prevent destruction caused by hurricanes by draining the storms of their deadly winds before they made landfall, according to a new scientific study.

The study, published Wednesday in the journal Nature Climate Change, estimates that a massive field of wind turbines could slow hurricane wind speeds by as much as 92 miles per hour and reduce storm surges by 79 percent in some situations.

Stanford University professor Mark Z. Jacobson, one of the reportÂ’s three authors, said the study marks the first time researchers have identified the potential hurricane-weakening effect of offshore wind turbines.

“If people are on the edge of whether they want to do offshore wind in the East Coast or Gulf Coast, I think this should be an additional motivation for doing it,” Jacobson said.

Jacobson and his team conducted the study by using computer models that simulated some of the most devastating and well-known storms in recent years, including 2012′s Hurricane Isaac and Hurricane Sandy and 2005′s Hurricane Katrina. They combined that with models of how wind turbines interact with the environment and simulated what would have happened if massive numbers of turbines were put in the way of those storms.

429 The anchoress makes a good point - as she usually does.  I am afraid, though, that the heat has been brought up too hot too fast and no one will back off until people are hurt - maimed and killed.  I'm not casting blame anywhere, just noting that I think something bad will happen in these culture wars and then you are going to have people asking "How on earth did we get here?"

Posted by: ejo at February 27, 2014 10:03 AM (GXvSO) Which violates another Commandment, namely do unto others as you would have them would do unto you. If one agrees to provide a cake for someone's wedding, that cake should be baked and decorated, delivered, and served to the best of the bakers ability. And proselytizing while serving it would be no more acceptable having taken the couple's money and agreeing to providing the service than if the shoe was on the other foot and a divorced baker was serving while expounding on the evils of getting married.
