Happy Thursday.

Democrats' long-stated, but little-evidenced claim that voter fraud at the polls doesn't exist took another blow yesterday.

England and France failed to anticipate and thereby prevent World War II, in part, because the English and French leadership failed to take Hitler at his word. They thought he was irrational and unserious, but he meant exactly what he had said about the Anschluss. Here we are again, refusing to consider that Putin might mean to do exactly what he says he wants to do. Note the "first in line," language.

2 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Thursday, March 20, 2014.  On this day in 1933 Giuseppe Zangara was executed in Florida's electric chair for fatally shooting Anton Cermak (Chicago's Mayor) during an assassination attempt against President-Elect Franklin D. Roosevelt.  Four other people were shot during the attempt.   Here's the rub, the assassination attempt was made on Feb 15 and he was executed on Mar 20th.  Fast justice eh when you try to pop a pol.  Zangara was an Italian communist who immigrated to the US.  Here's another rub, if he had succeeded in popping FDR would we still be as socialist as we are now, or was it inevitable?

13 Consultants (most likely overpaid) working on Detroit's bankruptcy restructuring have recommended increasing the parking meter fines because Detroit spends more money issuing and trying to collect the fines than it collects.  (One of the reasons this is so is because a LOT of people don't pay the fines.)  No mention at all on ways to reduce the costs of collection.  I have an idea.  Just pull the meters and quit losing money trying to collect.  That is what a private company would do if they were losing money on an action.  But no, they want to increase the fines, which are just another damn tax.  Most cities have recognized this problem and have gotten rid of the parking meters to encourage shoppers downtown vs the malls.

Now, your garden variety nitwit could have seen that one coming a mile away.

Ordinarily, as dad used to say, it's easy to fall into a well, not so easy to get out.  But they even made the well that is Obama care incredibly difficult to fall into so the exit is going to be orders of magnitude harder.

77 Hush now, you are questioning the wisdom of your betters ExSnipe. According to an account I read, there is slightly more to this story. Apparently the kid made a posting to some social media site bragging about his flaunting the rules. As you probably well know, taunting Happy Fun Gubmint is likely to get them to bring their full power to bear.

The fact this kid was open about the fact he wanted to be an EMT & a police officer after serving a stint in the Army, and was MAKING VIDEOS in which he he showed what EMT's and police officers do on the job, stuff that sometimes involves using FIREARMS and KNIVES, obviously made him a dangerous weirdo that authorities needed to thoroughly investigate.  To protect the public, of course.

79 I sleep with the television on so every time I wake up throughout the night, I hear the news. The news about objects located in the Indian Ocean have been "Breaking News" since about midnight last night. Fox and Friends finally broke away from the "Breaking News!" at the 85 minute mark to tell us about a line-drive baseball. Now they are back to the plane story again. It is a compelling story but this has passed the point of absurdity.

81 RIP, Jack Wise, Army, retd. Dr Jack Wise, Nam vet, one of 27 certified naturopathic endrichinologists, fwiw. Dead of a broken heart at 74. A week ago today, just got the news yesterday. Dr Wise survived Nam, diaetes, and Lyme disease. He was not in great shape in recent years, but getting better. Then, so we hear, about a month ago, his beloved son, drunk, murdered his beloved daughter's husband in front of two granddaughters. Three sudden heart attacks later, Jack is dead. And his wife Linda also had a heart attack, and surgery. If I weren't using the cell, I'd like to say much more about that wooly-headed old patriot. He claimed to cure cancer, diabetes, Lyme, and gluten intolerance, for the last of which he treated Milady. Crackpot or genius, maybe both, he was a wonderful man of great affection who sincerely enjoyed making people healthier, who certainly deserved better, and whose death will leave a great hole in many lives. Please spare a prayer for the survivors of this devastated family, and also all of irreplacable Jack's desperate patients.

when I was a kid we had about 8 of us on 1 block all about the same age.  We'd all gather and pool our "equipment," toy guns, helmets, dad's stuff from some war someplace.

Then we'd sit around and take turns picking gear.  After that we would "deploy" to the ends of the block in teams and play army until dinner time.

Obviously, I'm slightly nutz, but that had nothing to do with it.  Can you imagine kids doing that today?

============

Interesting.  Most of them are probably Asian immigrants- I don't think many home grown Americans go in for Engineering much these days.  I mean I'm sure there's a few, but not like years ago.  Not many of today's youth want to start their college careers with the standard "Engineering 101 First Day Talk":
---
Dept. Chair: Look at the man (yes, they were all men back then) on your left. (pause while heads turn, everyone looks at man to their left, row on far left looks at wall of lecture hall).  Now look at the man on your right  (pause while heads turn, everyone looks at man to their right, row on far right looks out windows of lecture hall).

Dept Chair: In four years time when graduation day comes (yes you did the program in FOUR years, not five, or six, or eight) neither of those two gentlemen will be there.  Either they will be gone or you will be.  That is because this School presents the most demanding program in the University.  Our experience shows that two thirds of the students in every class passing through the School of Engineering will either flunk out or quit.

Students: Nervous murmuring.

Dept Chair: But don't worry.  Our experience also shows that the students who flunk out of Engineering go on to become Honor Students in the School of Business.

Some Students: Quiet laughter.

Dept Chair: Those of you who are laughing- the people you are laughing at will, in ten years time, be your senior managers and will decide whether or not you have a job.  Now let's get started...
---

Used to be that a lot of American college students would rise to a challenge like that and beat it- nowadays, not so much...

I love  the quarter stealer story, it's so perfect.  How does somebody stroll into the quarter storing room day after day after day, walk  out with pockets full of quarters, and nobody notices?

I have a jar where I toss quarters,  and occasionally I count them up and cash them in.  Most I ever had, I think, was about $500.  It's a big jar!

I cannot imagine $460,000 in quarters...  as punishment they should make him count them, and  put them in rolls, by hand.

For what it's worth, Zangara's real target wasn't FDR but Cermak. Cermak was nearly 30 feet away from FDR, and Zangara had to aim in a diiferent direction than if FDR had been the target.

The assassination of Cermak was revenge for his attempts to control all organized crime in Chicago out to Cicero. To "honor" him (but more to remind all others who might take on the mob), they renamed a road that went from mob HQ in Chicago to a Cicero's mob outfit's HQ Cermak Road.

The gun rack over the old kitchen sink always had at least that old .22 sitting there. Loaded. Good for rats, snakes, and plinking. No, the kids would never screw with it, but.... My older brother told me, during a party, one of Dad's 'friends' pointed that .22 at Dad's head and said, "Think it's loaded?" I can imagine Dad's thundering response. The drunk then turned and fired out the window. The window still has a (taped-over) bullet hole from half a century ago. Used to be, it was just a small hole with spider-cracks, but the cracks have spread to the point of replacement. Alas, history will be lost.

141 Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class (FMF) Zackery Penner became the Navy’s 13th Silver Star recipient in 13 years of war when he received the prestigious award for his selfless bravery under fire at a ceremony Wednesday. The award dates to the summer of 2012, when Penner was a corpsman with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines. The unit was part of Regimental Combat Team 6, which had recently launched Operation Jaws — an effort to disrupt the enemy and establish stronger footholds in areas of Afghanistan where American forces were few and far between. The operation started strong and netted some big victories, but it wouldn’t stay that way long. Penner’s squad was days away from returning home when a fierce firefight erupted June 22. Gunfire severely wounded a Marine on a nearby rooftop. Seeing this, Penner “bravely exposed himself to accurate and heavy enemy fire from only 50 meters away as he moved to the casualty,” according to his award citation, a copy of which was obtained by Navy Times. The Marine was hit in the neck and bleeding badly. Penner, who had been baptized by fire on a previous deployment, paid little heed to rounds that ricocheted around him. He applied pressure to the wound, opened an airway and radioed for help. The Marine didn’t make it. Reaction gave way to reality later that night. “I was trying to push everything away like it didn’t happen,” said Penner, 23, who had been a part of that squad from the start, in a March 12 phone interview. “We still had five days … I had to get my mind straight for the next mission.” The following day, with their fallen comrade heavy on their hearts, the squad partnered with Afghan soldiers to clear a compound. The all-too-familiar crack of a sniper round broke the silence, followed by three more shots. Shouts for the “doc” soon rang out. Two men were down — a Marine and an Afghan soldier had each taken a shot to the head. Insurgents then unleashed an attack with medium machine guns and precision fire weapons. Penner recalled his response as running down, grabbing the wounded and getting them behind a wall. The humble corpsman omitted a few key facts: He was only days from rotating home, he’d risked his life the day prior, and the wounded men had little hope of survival. None of that mattered to Penner as he ran “more than 100 meters across fire-swept terrain to reach the casualties,” according to the citation, signed Nov. 15, 2013, by Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Jim Amos. “He established a casualty collection point behind a wall then moved in and out of the kill zone four times in order to retrieve the casualties and get them to cover. When the squad began receiving fire from the rear, Penner courageously shielded the casualties from the enemy fire with his own body until the evacuation aircraft arrived and then bravely exposed himself to enemy fire as he moved the casualties to the aircraft.” The Marine later died of his wounds. It was a tough 48 hours for the Corps. Lance Cpls. Steven Stevens and Eugene Mills were killed June 22 while participating in Operation Jaws in the Sangin Valley district. Lance Cpls. Niall Coti-Sears and Hunter Hogan were killed the following day. Hogan and Mills served alongside Penner in Bravo Company. Though he returned home with no physical wounds, the burden Penner carries is evident. His joyous talk of Marine brothers is quieted when he recounts the men who did not return. “I feel like anyone else in the squad would have done the same thing for me,” Penner said. “I was just in the wrong place at the right time. … It’s kind of hard thinking of a good memory because of everything that happened, especially so close to be home.” Penner is now assigned to Naval Hospital Pensacola, Fla. He said he plans to re-enlist in May and knock out some school. He does not know who put him in for the award, but said he is humbled by the honor. 151 A New Jersey teen captivated by 1 World Trade Center sneaked out of his home in the dead of night, got past the wall of security — and a sleeping guard — making it all the way up to the spire, The Post has learned. Scrawny 16-year-old Justin Casquejo crawled through a hole in a Ground Zero fence at about 4 a.m. Sunday and got a lift up the tower from a clueless union elevator operator, even though he had no ID. He was dropped off on the 88th floor and hiked the stairs up to the 104th floor — where a guard assigned to protect the top of the world’s biggest terror target was sound asleep. That guard has since been fired. Casquejo told cops he then climbed up to the roof and made it up to the antenna. After spending two glorious hours atop the nation’s tallest buildings snapping photos, the young daredevil was finally caught by a construction worker as he made his way back down.

We support the poor, we support those overseas, we support healthcare, we support food stamps. We feed the hungry and we heal the sick. We work and we pay for others at the expense and sacrifice of ourselves and our families. We supply the daily bread for the government's coffers. It all comes from us. We, the producers, are the everyday heroes.

Re: stolen honor.  What does the mil horde think about wearing patches on non-uniform clothing?

I have some patches (unused) that my uncle brought back from WWII.  I think they'd look good on my leather jacket, but I don't want to claim to be whatever a yellow star on a blue circle is, etc.

Also had some Nazi ones, which I sold because owning them creeped me out.

My boss' name is bob.

My female grey decided that "Fuck Bob!" was her favorite phrase.

lol!

One of my coworker's had a friend who got a    parrot from an animal shelter.   It had the saltiest language imaginable; she was convinced he must have been owned by a longshoreman or something.

Anyway, this friend brings   home   a date one night, and the bird takes one look at the guy and squawks,  "FUCKING ASSHOLE!"

She ended up   marrying the guy, and he turned out to be, in actuality, a fucking asshole.

Listen to your pets, people.   *sage nod*

lol.... those are the things you say over and over, but decidedly not what they choose to repeat.

Reminds me of when my daughter was just learning to talk.  We'd gone to church and dropped her off at daycare for the service.

The night prior, we had an exceptionally aromatic diaper even (ADE), in which I *allegedly* said the words "holy shit!"

I don't think I need to tell the rest of the story, but the woman minding the kids nearly killed me with a single stare when we picked her up after the service.

I think there's a giant gaping Sandra Fluke-sized chasm between putting patches on a jacket and claiming membership.  Some people will assume you were in, others will ask.  When they do, tell them the truth.  No problem.

I'm torn though.  I know if I saw a guy with aircrew wings on a jacket, and I knew he hadn't served, I'd end up somewhere between 'bothered' and 'pissed'.  It's much more personal when discussing patches/badges/insignia you've earned yourself.

I don't mind much because typically there's so many contradictory ones that its a wash, but I guess it depends on the wearer. As a style it started with both returning vets and hippies. Hippies = bad.

There are times when I think about how the American generation now in high school and college are getting handed the world's biggest shit sandwich.

I reflect on how they will not only be less well off economically through their lives then the preceding generations were, but will be _dramatically_ less well off.

Sometimes that makes me melancholic, to realize that America has peaked, and is now on the fast downhill of decline, and that the bulk of the burden is landing on the shoulders of the young.

But, sometimes I reflect on that in the context of stories like this one. And I laugh my ass off. Enjoy every bite of that shit sandwich, ya little bitches with yer "nazi insignia". Want a pitcher of piss for a chaser? Coming right up.
