Happy Wednesday.

Wow, I don't think anyone expected Vox to be quite so unprofessional. Partisan, yes, but even partisan hacks on the left like to preserve their illusions of professionalism.

Here's a good recap of the Supreme Court action yesterday in the political campaign false statements case. "A serious First Amendment concern with a state law that requires you to come before a commission to justify what you are going to say," said Justice Kennedy.

Oh, and the self-proclaimed "perfect affirmative action baby" on the high court wrote a strident dissent in the college affirmative action case in which she equated supporters of ending racial preferences in college admissions with supporters of Jim Crow. She also attacked the Chief Justice for his 2007 statement "The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race." In response, he chides her: "People can disagree in good faith on this issue, but it similarly does more harm than good to question the openness and candor of those on either side of the debate."

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  This isnÂ’t technically a Hollywood story, but since FenelonSpoke mentioned Dorothy Parker yesterday, it brought this tale to mind:

Parker and her second husband, Alan Campbell, had a stormy marriage, due to CampbellÂ’s cheating and ParkerÂ’s alcoholism. During WWII, while Campbell was serving in a military information outfit, he received a letter from his wife.

It began, “Dear Alan.  For several weeks now, IÂ’ve been hearing about - " and then went on, sentence after sentence of gossip, small items such as: “Kermit, whom I met on Fifth Avenue tells me that Lillian has been to Moscow.”  And it was signed off, “Yrs., Dorothy.”

Then there was a P.S.:  “If you will read the first letter of each sentence in this epistle you will find my real message.”

And reading the first letters of those sentences spelled out: F U C K  Y O U.

And, then, one last line:  “PPS.  Lucky I ran into Kermit.  I was in trouble for a K.”

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

54 An Easter message from the Pastor being held in Iran: Happy Resurrection Day. On the Eve of Good Friday and Easter I was praying from my hospital room for my fellow Christians in the world. What the Holy Spirit revealed to me in prayer was that there are many dead faiths in the midst of Christians today. That Christians all over the world are not able to fully reach their spiritual potential that has been given to them as a gift by God so that in reaching that potential, the curtain can be removed and the Glory of God would be revealed. Some times we want to experience the Glory and resurrection with Jesus without experiencing death with Him. We do not realize that unless we pass through the path of death with Christ, we are not able to experience resurrection with Christ. We want to have a good and successful marriage, career, education and family life (which is also God’s desire and plan for our life). But we forget that in order to experience the Resurrection and Glory of Christ we first have to experience death with Christ and to die to ourselves and selfish desires. Jesus said to His Disciples: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. (Matthew 16:24) This means that we should not do things that we like to do (that God does not want us to do) and to do things that we do not like to do (but God wants us to do) so that He may be glorified. So in addition to spending our days and night in doing the works of faith as described above, we should also transform our dead faiths into living and active faiths through the resurrection of Christ which is an active and constructive love that is effective. In conclusion, let us resurrect our Dead faiths to living faiths by first dying to our selfish “resurrected” self and experiencing the cross of Jesus. Then we are able to experience the Glorious resurrection with Christ. A Glorious life with Christ starts only after a painful death (to self) with Christ. We will start with Christ. Pastor Saeed Abedini Prisoner in the Darkness in Iran, but free for the Kingdom and Light _______________________________________ I'm guessing that is a lot more inspirational than whatever "Christian" Obama gave for Easter,

"Dead faith."  Describes exactly how I feel.

Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at April 23, 2014 03:38 AM (zF6Iw)

58 Yes, indeed it was. Pastor Abedinii's message was a lot more inspirational for this Christian than what Obama wrote. Here is part of what President Obama gave on the the 19th: Obama also made an appeal to people of other faiths in his Saturday address, calling to mind one idea at the heart of the world’s major religions. “The common thread of humanity that connects us all – not just Christians and Jews, but Muslims and Hindus and Sikhs – is our shared commitment to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. To remember, I am my brother’s keeper. I am my sister’s keeper. Whatever your faith, believer or nonbeliever, there’s no better time to rededicate ourselves to that universal mission,” he said. The weekly address is usually a time when the President speaks directly to the American people about an issue of particular importance or prominent in the national conversation in that moment. Many of Obama’s have been about raising the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour or enacting stricter regulation of firearms, for example. He is likely to take up such issues once again next week as he travels in East Asia on a long-scheduled trip. But for this week, the President got a bit more personal. “For me, Easter is a story of hope – a belief in a better day to come, just around the bend. So to all Christians who are celebrating, from my family to yours, Happy Easter. And to every American, have a joyful weekend,” he said. Does Obama talk about the common beliefs we all hold and how we are to love one another when he addresses Muslim groups?

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at April 23, 2014 03:41 AM (XyM/Y)

59 I'm guessing that is a lot more inspirational than whatever "Christian" Obama gave for Easter, Posted by: FenelonSpoke That's because Pastor Abedini is trying to live a life in Christ. He will, unfortunately, probably end up being a martyr to Christ. Barack Obama believes only in himself, and what he can shake down others for. He has no real faith in any God or Supreme Being.

I also think it's great for faiths to find things they have in common and of paramount importance for people love one another, It's just that Obama has done nothing personally-as far as I know- to help Pastor Adedini and he never calls out radical Muslims on the killing of Christians all over the world.

(Just  kidding fellers, I find it slightly amusing when a question gets answered half a dozen times within a few minutes of being asked.  I do find it reassuring when there  seems to be consensus,  however.)

Filter those two statements through the progressive mind and they come out as equivalant, that's how. First, they are categorized as "religious dogma". Then the difference in intrinsic meaning is ignored, in favor of relying strictly on the categorization. Presto! They are the same.

125 Yep, let's come out with a signed letter weeks after it happened. Did they stand up for Eich while the mob was going after him? It didn't happen overnight and took about a week. Did these prominent people tweet, email, post, or call out in anyway the mob? Or did they mainly sit idly by, whispering in the corner that it wasn't right? The little aside about it being bad politics makes me think they are more worried about the backlash than the actual result and that is what prompted the declaration.

142 Prominent same-sex marriage advocates sign open letter rejecting the mob-mindedness that claimed Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich.

Dear prominent same-sex marriage advocates,

Thank you.    But where the fuck were you a month ago?     This is the quintessential "too little, too late" testament,    intended to make you feel better without actually accomplishing a damn thing.   As if your bloodthirsty sycophants will pay any attention to you.   Even if you're sincere -- and I'm sure many of you are -- you must know that you've unleashed a monster on this country that will do nothing but pillage and destroy until all dissenting opinion has been   silenced    by a    frigid   Orwellian     muzzle.

Tell me,    would you care to weigh in on the tendency of your fellow same-sex marriage cultists who feel it's reasonable and legitimate to sue private businesses to    carry out their wishes    against the business owners' personal or religious beliefs?      Do you have any    glorious, late-to-the-party  sanctimony    to share on THAT topic?    I suspect not, because you're    all talk and no action.   You feel safe weighing in on the Mozilla situation because it's over;  Eich isn't going back and you don't have to worry about it,   but there will be dozens, if not hundreds, of court cases in the coming years, and you wouldn't want to risk    looking as though you support the "wrong" side.    And by "wrong" side,    I of course mean the side with the Constitution behind them, not it's    illusory   emanations and fucking penumbras.

You're a bunch of fucking cowards.

I think that was in MN.  Not the first time they've done crap like that.  Before, it was refusing to let service dogs for blind people into their cabs.

165 Yes, Silk on Kindle has gone to Shit. The most irritating thing is tabs-- tabs which are not on top aren't kept loaded. Every time you switch tabs, whatever tab you bring forward has to REFRESH. It's slow, and maddening...you can't leave a tab resident and have it stay if you leave the network because of this, so so much for keeping an email or page open with directions while you drive to somewhere.

188 Maybe Ohio could charge Obama under the "No lying in campaigns" law.

Come to think of it, it would be much more difficult to find the areas where Obama has told the truth, than to find the ones where he was lying.

It would make a good book title: Obama - the search for the truth Blurb: "The question is not "Does Obama lie?" the question is "Has he ever told the truth about anything?"

His desire for a Gestapo internal security force is probably an area where he superficially told the truth - although he lied by omitting what he really wants it for, and it isn't "internal security".

231 67 Just a note for anyone using the Pale Moon or Ice Dragon web browsers. Both of those are based on the Mozilla code. If your reason for using it was to let Mozilla know that you're upset over the Brebden Eich resignation, you'll need to use something else. Posted by: Laughing in Texas at April 23, 2014 07:51 AM (eBNjM) Not necessarily. With Pale Moon you have to change how the browser IDs itself, from Firefox to PM. Vox Popoli tells how (http://www.voxday.blogspot.com/2014/04/fumigating-firefox.html) " Create a new tab. Type "about:config" into the Address Bar as if it were an internet site (URL). Type "compatMode" into the Search box that will appear right below the Address Bar. On the line general.useragent.compatMode.firefox there are three settings: user set, boolean, true. Click on "true" and it will change to false. Close the tab." The only problem is that rarely-it's happened to me once, but it's a site I need for work, which is annoying- you'll get a website which reads your browser ID and gives you a "You must upgrade to a supported browser" message. In that case just set it temporarily back to Firefox or use IE.

First off, are figure skaters known for their fashion sense? Because just because JW is the most flamingly gay gay man since "La Cage Aux Folles" doesn't mean he knows a damn thing about which hats are fashionable and which aren't. Given his own style template I'd actually be willing to say his opinion should be taken with a wristful of salt, followed by a shot of tequila and a lemon wedge.

Same reason why gay men rule the runway fashion world?

316 Bad teacher stories? I got a few! My Aunt (one of the nicest women on earth) hated her full name because it was french sounding and something of a mouthful and she got made fun of for it. She went by a nick name. Her math teacher would call her by her full name all the time. My mother, the older sister, went to him and asked him to stop, because her sister disliked her full name. The next class, he called her up and made her stand next to him as he announced he would call her by her full name, mocked her for her sensitivity, and made fun of her for half the class. She was crying by the end of it. The old bastard is dead now. Hopefully being raped by Satan. Miserable old bastard.

You'd think one of the dozens of reporters in the WH press pool might take the opportunity to ask Carney what exactly Obama meant when he said he'd be more flexible for Putin after his reelection. But then again, you'd also think in a nation founded on the ideal of a free press, journalists wouldn't eagerly act as propagandists, but here we are.

384 I don't really have any bad teacher stories for myself, thank goodness.   I was one of those students who just sort of floated through everything, not really caring too much one way or the other.   I remember once in sophomore English a bunch of other kids hadn't done their homework and asked to copy mine.  I shrugged and said, "Whatever."   Normally I didn't let anyone copy my homework, but it was, like, a one page worksheet with questions about the reading.  I really couldn't    have cared less.   The teacher walked in while this little group of three or four other students were clustered around my desk, copying my answers, and she looked at me and said, "MWR, what are you doing?"   I just shrugged.   It's not like she could do much.  I got a B that semester instead of an A;  big whoop.

My sister, on the other hand, had    a lot of ... not necessarily BAD experiences, but    less than stellar ones.    She    was always one of those students who didn't really have to pay too much attention in class in order to grasp teh concepts and do well on any tests or assignments.    She was also hopelessly shy and so quiet that, one year, her teacher    joked   (kindly)   that she     thought she   was mute.

In third grade, her usual teacher left a few months in to go on maternity leave and the fill-in teacher didn't get my sister AT ALL.   My sister liked to read, and when she was bored in class she'd take out a book and read.   Her grades didn't suffer.   She didn't bother anyone.   It wasn't perhaps the most well thought out action to take, but if it's between being bored    or   being engaged in a book, who wouldn't choose the book?  And it was third fricking grade!      The teacher ended up docking my sister's grade for poor participation   or whatever bullshit excuse, and wrote in her report card that "JRR reads too much."

My sister was so upset;    just talking   about it to this day makes my parents furious.        Reads too much.    A child who reads TOO MUCH.   Not, "JRR doesn't pay enough attention in class, and while she understands the material, she misses out on the chance to interact with her classmates."   No.   "JRR    reads too much."

Fuck you, Ms. Pinkham.

Pinkham.

396 Get the kids to drop out so they stop bringing down the school's overall performance, making the school look better. Except that doesn't work- drop-out rates are measured, too. I don't know the specifics, and I can't think of anything that would justify publicly posting the names of kids who failed standardized tests, but something similar happened in Everman (suburb of Fort Worth for the non-DFW Morons) a few years ago. The Principal at one of the High Schools announced on the PA their previous year's testing rankings- and specified that they needed to bring up the scores among the "African American population" (which had performed below State requirements). There was a firestorm and calls of RAAAAACIST! from all the predictable corners.

But since 1991, regardless of my best efforts to the contrary, I've found myself in front of various groups of wide-eyed students. I tried to evade it, intentionally, but no matter what I do I end up teaching in one form or the other. I've learned a lot of things in the last 23 years, foremost is this: check your ego at the door because there's a high probability that some of those people that your teaching are actually smarter than you are.

After that, Mr. Bostock was my best bud, tracking me down to grade papers for him, even. We had a weird, but great, neighborhood school.

433 The normal human aspiration, in my opinion, is to be ruled. To (probably mis-)quote Terry Pratchet: "There is a major design flaw in the human species- it's tendency to bend at the knees." That said, I sort of disagree. We have a skewed view of what "liberty" means. Liberty does not (in itself) mean that there is no place for royalty, or that a codified class system is inherently bad. Other things mean that. Liberty simply means self-determination. And people don't "aspire" to it because they have it naturally. Neither to I "aspire" to have air. It's just something I get for free. The conceit of America has been that Liberty can *only* mean Republicanism/Democracy. That's wrong. Republican/Democracy are predicated on Equality of Being (which is different from Liberty). And most people don't actually believe in Equality (at least- not Equality of Being).

Some asshole in my 8th grade history class once raised his hand and ratted me out to the teacher for reading a library book and chewing gum while said teacher was re-presenting the material we were supposed to have ready already (and probably for the second day in a row hoping a little bit might stick this time) and the teacher told him when he bothers to read the assigned pages before class and manages to get better than a C- on the quiz, he could read library books and chew gum, too.

Which of course only got me more bullying in other classrooms.  Ho-hum.

467 To (probably mis-)quote Terry Pratchet: "There is a major design flaw in the human species- it's tendency to bend at the knees."

That said, I sort of disagree.

I wasn't quite this "The Kid"-ish, but I was the one who always wanted to read aloud when the teacher asked for volunteers.   And I was probably the only person in my entire Brit Lit class who was disappointed we didn't have to learn and recite the Prologue from "The Canterbury Tales" in the original Middle English, like every Brit Lit class before us had done.      That still makes me pout.

492 From grade 10-12 I was in a tiny town in Montana. Graduating class of a whole 24 people. We had great teachers and there was a lot of academic pressure because everyone knew everyone and everyone's families. Because we were such a small school, everyone got to do everything. My narrow little no-talent ass lettered in basketball, football, speech and drama (Me and Peder took first in State for humorous duo), track... shoot.... it just boiled down to 'we need warm bodies, so here's a football and good luck!' Was pretty cool.

493 My tenth grade English teacher was the bane of my existence. I'd opted out of the advanced classes for a year because, being young and lazy, I thought I just wanted to coast for a while. So I breezed through the first quarter of the year with a perfect grade. We get to the end of the second quarter and the teacher tells me I'm failing. What?!?! No way that was right. I always did my work, never missed anything, passed every test, etc. Turns out she claimed that I cheated on a test. The test in question was an in-class essay, the subject of which was not given until we were in class, and the person she accused me of cheating off of sat on the far opposite side of the room from me, and was probably the last person anyone with two working brain cells would have ever cheated from. And she could reduce no evidence of this at all. When I made a stink about it the lady looked at me and told me it didn't matter if it was true or not, that she was failing me for my own good. That success should never come too easy and I needed to learn how to fail. And that it didn't matter because I'd made an A+ the first semester, so she could fail me for the rest of the year if she wanted (no talk about whether or not my work merited such failure) and I'd still pass so get over it. My mother didn't believe me. Being a fairly astute woman she knew that children and teenagers lie, so she always took the adult's side until otherwise informed. So she requested a teacher conference. To which the teacher rolled into 20 minutes late, in her pajamas. After pressing her on this test I supposedly cheated on, the lady still could not produce the tests and it was one she never returned to the students, so no evidence. Just her word that I cheated. She also point blank told my mom the same exact thing she told me about why she was really failing me. So mom left that conference and marched fit to the principal. Only time she ever did that, too. The lady changed my grade and she flat out ignored me the rest of the year after that. I passed the rest of the class in the same way I did the first semester. When my mom spoke with the principal later to follow up, it turned out this same teacher failed over half the class that semester based on this same essay test. She claimed we all cheated. It was bizarre. But my mom was the only one who really pressed the issue, so who knows how often this lady got a bug up her ass and failed people on a whim.

509 Most of my teachers liked me, but one in particular hated my fucking guts. A tortoise-looking woman named Ms. McGourty. Homeroom and English teacher for seventh and eighth grade. She gave me an F-minus in homeroom conduct on my last ever report card from a school I'd gone to since kindergarten. Still cracks me up when I think about how much that bitch hated me. After the first month or two I knew she was a hopeless case so I baited her constantly. Other teachers noticed and thought it was hilarious. Posted by: Lincolntf at April 23, 2014 09:30 AM (ZshNr) Mine was an 11th grade Algebra teacher. I hated that fat bastard because he treated all the black kids as if we were straight from the trees. (My high school was about 35% Americans of Japanese descent.) To be fair, almost all the other black kids in the class were struggling, but I had always been good at math and this class was no different. But he treated me as if I were an idiot, so I treated him accordingly. I received a B in the class because sometime I just couldn't take his bullshit. I also received a ''U" (Unsat) in "cooperation" for that class. My mom was like "how do you get a U in cooperation in a math class?" Me: "The teacher is an asshole and I'm not shy about letting him know it." I think that was the first time I said a bad word in front of my parents.

I didn't start out that way, but by fifth grade or so it got to be awfully embarrassing to always be the only one who ever raised her hand.   I felt bad for the teachers more than myself -- they were the ones who had to scan the classroom desperately for someone, ANYONE else to call on before sighing and going with, "Yes, MWR?"

And the thing is, I know there were other kids in my classes who knew the answers.  They just never wanted to speak up.   To this day I don't understand that.   It's not like I    loved school    (though I liked it more than most),   I just hated being bored.  And there   are few things more boring than sitting in class listening to the teacher drone on and on  while everyone else listens    (or more often, goofs off)   in silence.

549 MWR, in high school there were a few classes, like Religion, that were not divided into academic levels, unlike math, history, etc. so some students were not quite up to some of the lessons, and I ended up coming up with a system of signaling the Teacher that if he really wanted an answer, he could call on me, but without actually raising my hand. He'd be desperately scanning the room, looking for signs of life, and I'd sort of lift a finger to let him know that when he gave up he could use me to close out the awkward silence.

That was the same boss who lit into me for doing xyz and when I pressed her multiple times if she was positive it was me she said absolutely and how dare I try to get out of it and then I pointed out that it was impossible for me to have done that since at the time that occurred I was standing in the MGM Grand in Las Vegas watching my brother get married. Later that day I got called into the office manager's office and got yelled at for embarrassing my boss. That boss was the daughter of the woman who once spent 15 minutes screaming at me about how a complaint was drafted wrong several years ago and now it was a huge problem and it was all my fault and when I kept saying I didn't draft it and it was impossible that I drafted it she accused me of lying because I drafted all the complaints and I finally screamed louder than her that as I've been saying for 15 minutes I didn't work here then! I didn't even live in this state then! That also resulted in my being reprimanded for embarrassing her. These were the same people who told the entire office to change our voter registration to Democrat and then to vote for a specific candidate in a primary. That whole I worked for psychopaths thing? I had a (required) freshman Earth Science class where everyone but me hated the teacher because he expected you to do the work, and one glorious winter day I was tired of being the only one who ever raised my hand so I stopped, and when no one else raised their hand we all got a written pop quiz (no multiple choice).  God bless that man.

I was a "good" kid, desperate for rebel cred.  I cut class all the time.  I'd drive to Jersey and buy beer (PA age was 21, NJ was 18 and laxly enforced).  But I had all sorts of access to passes.  Swiped blank stacks of them and became an excellent forger.  Used my student government pass to claim subcommittee meetings.  I cut more classes than any stoner, but never got caught so no rebel cred.

Also, mostly I cut class and walked downtown to a bookstore.  Because rebel.

636 Standardized tests are the absolute worst method of measuring student achievement- except for all the other ways we've tried.
==========
My theory is, what did we do before standardized tests?

My answer is: We can have principals or we can have standardized tests to determine whether the teacher is doing their job.
We don't need both.

I suspect that 100% of the increase in spending on public education in the last 30 years--while test scores remained flat--is due to administrative bloat.

643 I have two "Teacher From Hell" stories. One was a science teacher I had in 7th or 8th grade who was a prosletyzing lesbian Vegan who went out of her way to demonize eating meat or drinking milk. She left at the end of the year and ended up teaching the children of celebrities in Beverly Hills. The other was my freshman HS English teacher, who was the wife of the new basketball coach. She insisted on being called "doctor", even though she had never finished her dissertation, and was pissed at having to teach HS freshmen instead of college students. Her end-of-semester exam was a shit show that nearly the entire class failed. After making us re-take the exam to start the next semester, she was called into the headmaster's office for a discussion and, when told she had to change how she was doing things, she threw a fit and quit. And there was much rejoycing.

My mother informed her that it appeared that I had read more books than the rest of the class combined, and that she  was    confident that I had no need to prove to     said teacher that I had read them all by writing a report rehasing each one.     I had been     attending the next higher grade in reading/writing, so the only revenge the teacher could take was to    cancel that for the following year.

Of course, I have her in a Christian school, so she'd never have her Bible taken away from her like this.  She's a sweet kid, but don't be cussin' or lyin' or cheatin' around her or taking Jesus away from her, or she'll go BALLISTIC on your ass.  Wonder what she'd do if I told her that the reason she only sees Daddy every other weekend is because her Mom's a lying, cheating whore?

663 OMG. This isn't satire or from the Onion. http://tinyurl.com/m8h8woj MOBILE, Ala. -- The Navy and Austal USA held a keel laying ceremony for the future USS Gabrielle Giffords (LCS 10), the Navy's tenth littoral combat ship (LCS), in Mobile, Ala., April 16. The keel-laying ceremony recognizes the first joining together of a ship's components. While modern shipbuilding processes allow fabrication of individual modules to begin months earlier, the laying of the keel represents the formal beginning of a ship. The ship's sponsor, Ms. Roxanna Green, was unable to attend the ceremony. The ship's namesake, former Representative Gabrielle Giffords, authenticated the keel by having her initials welded into a sheet of the ship's hull. --------- Perhaps old news but first I have heard of it.
