Happy Wednesday.

Justice Scalia had a tough day yesterday.

Democratic Congressman Bennie Thompson went on a New Nation of Islam radio show to call Justice Thomas an "Uncle Tom" and Sen. McConnell a racist.

I expect stay requests in capital cases will get extra scrutiny after a lethal injection in Oklahoma last night left the inmate semi-conscious and convulsing before finally killing him 40 minutes later. Gov. Fallin postponed the other execution scheduled for yesterday.

Gotta love the scare quotes around "gays." And that poll. And please, I beg you, read the quotes from Buddy Smith.

Illinois Gov. Quinn's reelection race just got harder. A grand jury is looking into his anti-violence "slush fund" spending.

178 Hey, I've been meaning to relate another incidence of "concussive maintenance." A while back we got a printer at Wal-Mart, not the lowest-end, but close to. One where ink refills quickly cost more than the printer purchase. This model had a scanner — already have a scanner, but a 2nd could be handy — and stuff I never need, like Fax and ... document feeder. I've never had anything but problems with document feeders. But, for the price, I took it. About the day after the warranty expires, the printer quits booting up. It announces a jam in ... yes, of course... the never-been-used doc feeder! I open and close firmly every hatch and cover. I jiggle every component on the doc feed path. No change. Finally, I pick the printer off the table a couple of inches, and drop it. The error message remained but changed slightly, as if it had got further in booting up. So I drop it twice more, once impacting harder on the left side, again on the right. Printer comes up working like it was brand new. Itemized bill: Dropping printer...... $1.00 Knowing how hard & where to drop it: $99.00.

275 Mr. Black and I watched an ESPN show last night about pro baseball player Luis Tiant.  His career, his father's career and going back to the Cuba he left in '61.  It's a 2 hour program, and we've only watched half so far.  But the misery of Cuban life is acute in it.  He goes back to where he grew up to visit his two surviving aunts.  They talk about the hardships of living in Cuba.  How they are given "provisions" from the government for nearly everything....soap, toothpaste, etc., and the provisions only last 15 days out of each month.  The rest of the time, Cubans have to improvise without these necessities.  At one point, Luis Tiant goes to downtown Havana, where a large group of men are freely arguing, talking, exchanging ideas.  It's stated that it's one of the very few remaining places where "free speech" is allowed.  But there's one caveat.  They are only allowed to talk about baseball.  All other topics, politics, etc., are explicitly off limits.

It's a strong, underlying theme that Cuba was once so vibrant, and Cubans know what's been taken from them over the decades since Castro's revolution.  Everything is now so run down and everyone is so poor.  Communism.  It sickens me to think there are Americans who think this is what they want.

I would suspect Gabe's reply would be that, Mr. Smith is free to live out the dictates of his Christian faith and conscience at home and at church, but if he offers a product or service to the public, then he must abide by the rules of the marketplace and serve all comers.  I don't particularly like the "don't want to bake cakes for gays?  Then don't start a bakery!" argument, but that's what it seems to boil down to.

 

I suspect Gabe also dislikes Smith's characterization of homosexuality as a sin.  Nobody likes to be told they're sinful.

He didn't announce it himself in the video as that would have been completely unrelated to the poetry that he was talking about The poet wasn't gay.. Hey, I know gays can be very bright and sensitive people who are interested in all kinds of things and do many things well. It That's hardly revelatory. I agree with the other guy, those stories do not make a difference.

There are some people that shift their whole being on themselves, therefore if abortion of a perfectly healthy child is threatened, it is bad for their own self worth because it might hint that they are not that important after all. Then there are other people who recognize, regardless of the fact that they have children themselves, that it is not about them but it is about another life and simply shift the balance from themselves to another being.

In my small experience, all the people who were in favor of abortion always and in any case were extremely self-centered and selfish, even tho they liked to talk of themselves as generous.

Same of people who were against abortion, they were the most willing to give a helping hand when needed.

For centuries all sorts of pediatricians, doctors and specialists have stressed how important is the mother figure to a child, immediately after birth, but yet we have a baby market that manufactures children for a category of people that is completely self-absorbed. Granted, even heterosexuals such as Robert DeNiro who had children from a surrogate is disgusting to me and he is obviously one full of issues. It is not a coincidence that he is also a die hard leftist.

I would say the same about 2 lesbians depriving a child of a father. Same condemnation.

I don't believe in this bullshit of 'I was born this way' and later I found out I was ghey.

Science is against them, literature is against them. The most famous homosexual in history is Oscar Wilde. I quote from Wikipedia who quotes from a reliable source.

I agree with you on all of your 3 micro points. However, as to your unstated macro point (that the new law is wrong), I emphatically disagree. Businesses should have the liberty to refuse to do business with anyone they don't want to do business with. The sticker campaign is the perfect response to that kind of free market. If some businesses don't want certain kinds of trade, then it is great that there are other businesses willing to pick up the slack. Customers can makes their choices accordingly and let the market work.

I recognize that that kind of model will not work for some kinds of businesses, the water company for example, but those situations should be treated as the exception, not the rule.
