The perfect May Day story: SEIU membership, revenues plummet after state ends 'underhanded scheme'

Funny, when people aren't forced to be in a labor union, they tend not to join.

And speaking of forced membership in things, can I interest you in a health plan?

Data provided to the [House Energy & Commerce] committee by every insurance provider in the health care lawÂ’s Federally Facilitated Marketplace (FFM) shows that, as of April 15, 2014, only 67 percent of individuals and families that had selected a health plan in the federally facilitated marketplace had paid their first monthÂ’s premium and therefore completed the enrollment process. (emphasis added)

Now, there are a couple of problems with this stat, but the White House reaction is hilarious, given that they have the actual numbers:

Help me liberal "fact checker", you're my only hope!

Live by "stray voltage"; die by "stray voltage".

Good Morning Morons.  Today is Thursday, May 01, 2014.  On this day last year Obama promised to investigate Benghazi.  He was still denying any knowledge of it.  We figured it was a lie then, now we know it was a lie.  On this day in 1931 the Empire State Building opened in NYC.   At the time of its opening it was the world's tallest building.  It is now 23 on the list.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  Can I just say, before we get started, how pleased I am that Ace used my “you want – youÂ’ll take – youÂ’ll get - ” formation on the Benghazi story?  Woo-hoo, internet immortality!

Anyway. . .

Erich von Stroheim was, arguably, one of the greatest of silent film directors, with a knack for psychologically devastating portraits of people driven to their destruction by avarice, jealousy or lust.  But it was his insistence on actual detail and fidelity to sources that made him a Hollywood pariah; during the filming of 1922s Foolish Wives, he nearly bankrupted Universal by constructing an actual replica of the casino at Monte Carlo, complete with gambling tables which were never seen by the viewing audience.  When it came to translating the novel McTeague to film, the resultant Greed ran, in itÂ’s original directorÂ’s cut, over ten hours.*

StroheimÂ’s insistence on his artistic freedom – which meant, in practice, no interference from the front office – and the costs of his films led to his downfall.  “Von,” in fact, was legendary for shooting far more footage than he could possibly use.  ThereÂ’s an apocryphal story that, during the filming of 1925s The Merry Widow, Stroheim was called into the office of production chief Irving Thalberg, who confronted him over a certain scene where contract player Tully Marshall, as a degenerate Austrian baron, is shown salivating over the WidowÂ’s fantastic collection of shoes.

“Why does he have to indulge in such disgusting behavior?” Thalberg asked.

“He has a foot fetish,” Von replied.

“Yes,” Thalberg is said to have snapped, “and you have a footage fetish!”

I donÂ’t have a picture of Tully and the shoes, but hereÂ’s a picture of the Widow, played by the erratic Mae Murray:

http://tinyurl.com/pyvyq95

And for we shoe fetishists, here’s a Roger Vivier “Eyelash” heel pump:

http://tinyurl.com/od6roco

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

*Stroheim later cut Greed to a six hour running time designed to be shown over two nights.  When this was deemed unacceptable, he cut it again, to four hours.  At that point, MGM took the film out of his hands and cut it to 2 ½ hours.

We don¡¯t give more respect to a woman who thinks keeping her home organized and tidy is weakness. We find a woman who hates babies and children kind of off-putting, even if we don¡¯t currently want a child. We don¡¯t think it¡¯s edgy. Part of the problem is I don't know many of the "players."  Another part is when I see hashtag this or that, and the @ sign for someone who is supposed to be an adult, along with the abbreviations, I lose interest in trying to read the damn thing.

Like when someone asks you to read their poetry.  Yeah, it's sorta like English, but not really.

118 Two Maryland lawmakers are trying to overturn a recently passed transgender rights bill which they claim would allow men to walk freely into ladies' restrooms. The lawmakers -- Republican state Delegates Neil Parrott and Kathy Szeliga -- started a petition drive Tuesday to get the issue put on the November ballot and let voters decide. Szeliga said Wednesday she fully supports protecting the rights of transgender people, but the so-called “bathroom bill” could have been written in a better way to protect young girls and women. “But it wasn’t,” she told FoxNews.com. “The expectation of women and men is to see people of the same gender in places like bathrooms and changing rooms. We wouldn’t be petitioning this bill if the [sponsors] had crafted it in a more thoughtful way.” More thoughtful way? Hey how about dicks piss in dicks bathroom and non-dicks ( see how PC I am there since I could have been obscene ) piss in non dicks bathrooms?

Listen to a crowd of three millenials having a "conversation" and you get three people talking about three separate things. It's fucking bizarre. Housing headlines,  San Jose will house the homeless in sturdy home office shed "pods"; whereas in Venezuela, they're promising to recycle abandoned vehicles for the steel required for rebar to reinforce concrete to continue their Great Venezuelan Housing Project.  But then the failing (global) economy is nothing to match supply/demand. After all, supposedly China's economy surpasses the USA -- yesterday's headline -- meaning they're further in Keynesian debt than the US/ English: debt is wealth; China's soundbite: debt is gold.

177 Absolute bullshit: Boston Marathon bombing defense team unsure it can be 'adequately prepared' for November trial Published April 30, 2014Associated PressFacebook2 Twitter2 Gplus0 BOSTON – Lawyers for Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR' tsahr-NY'-ehv) say they remain concerned about being "adequately prepared" for a November trial in his death penalty case. Tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty to 30 federal charges. The defense and prosecutors in court filings Wednesday proposed deadlines for each side to give the other pretrial material. The defense wants the government's experts' reports earlier. Prosecutors say both sides should have the same deadlines. Prosecutors also responded to a defense request to allow Tsarnaev prison visits from his sisters without an FBI agent present. They propose substituting an agent who isn't part of the prosecution team. Prosecutors allege Tsarnaev and his brother placed bombs near the finish line of last year's marathon, killing three people. The brother died after a shootout with police. http://goo.gl/41TxEb

You are right.

Freaking reality is that most people have submitted their consciousness to a collective "virtual" insanity.

It's the Tower of Babel metaphor hitting hard pavement. Confusion. Lack of communication skills. Doesn't stop people from "speaking in tongues"...

Remember the old TV anti-drug commercial frying an egg, "This is your brain; this is your brain on drugs." Drugs aside for the moment, little kids through adults, every population segment in America and "the developed world" are electronically connected to the internet now where virtual reality (fabrications, propaganda, misinformation) permeates all. Well, the old sayings include, "Too much of a good thing..." and "Consider the source". But that requires independent thought process on the part of the human who, increasingly (not referencing the "rebel" or independent segment), has unplugged and contaminated that natural resource, perhaps far beyond repair since responsibility requires great personal investment in THOUGHTFUL experience. Self control? The masses seem to consider that a sin or a lie, because too many have forfeited any effort given the blanket excuse that sounds something like, "Everyone's doing it" or "Everyone knows"... or whatever else "everyone" means.

The coined phrase, "The mark of modernity is abbreviation" constricts MEANING, assassinates our very essence as human beings. Why should artificial intelligence trump the human experience? Not my bag, dark horse and all.

208 Firstly: The unions are evil. They can't stand on their own legs anymore, so they're trying to live on our backs. Secondly (and perhaps more importantly): These health insurance numbers, they are disturbing. But what happens if I pay a month, skip a month, pay a month, etc. IIRC the law says you have to wait 90 days to cancel for nonpayment. Could someone game the system by paying in odd intervals to keep that clock running. Also, presumably the subsidies start to pay out regardless of when the sign up starts paying (because, government yo!) Does the tax payer get those back if the plan is later canceled for nonpayment? (My guess is no.)

It has never worked and it will never work That's because, largely, it isn't actually training for any kind of work. You know... if you really wanted to fight poverty/unemployment by paying for training, you could pay people to become apprentice plumbers, or electricians, or carpenters, or whatever. I bet it'd be cheaper in the short run because fewer people would do it (it would be *work* after all), and it'd be far more effective in the long run.

Most vape foes are part of the New Temperance movement, and don't believe you should be able to do anything enjoyable for the sake of enjoyment. If they could find a way to make it simply "not able to do anything enjoyable" I'm pretty sure they would.

254 Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) Ah, F It. at May 01, 2014 08:20 AM (PYAXX) I don't think I've ever seen them in an actual store. Only at Kiosks in the mall. But boy are they growing in popularity. This is interesting too, because nicotine itself is sorta "meh" on the "bad for you spectrum." Vaping may be the best delivery mechanism for it (and honestly it's not much different than in inhaler at that point.) The crucial difference is that I think there's some PEG in the solution, PEG hasn't been shown to have any long term effects, but I don't think it's often heated and inhaled.

257 WASHINGTON Reports of sexual assaults by members of the military rose 50 percent after the Pentagon began a vigorous campaign to get more victims to come forward, prompting defense officials to order a greater focus on prevention programs, including plans to review alcohol sales and policies. But officials are still unhappy with the low number of male victims who reported sexual assault, and they say there will be a greater emphasis in the months ahead on getting men to come forward and seek help. Final data obtained by The Associated Press show that about 14 percent of the reports filed last year involved male victims. I call bullshit. I just find this hard to believe.

279 Brunei has become the first east Asian country to adopt Sharia criminal law nationwide. “Theory states that God’s law is harsh and unfair, but God himself has said that his law is indeed fair,” the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah said today. According to the first phase of the law, those who have a child out of wedlock, fail to pray on Friday or promote religions other than Islam will be forced to go before an Islamic court and could face jail time or fines. The second phase is set to be implemented a year from now and includes whippings and amputations for crimes such as alcohol consumption and theft. A year after that, those who commit adultery, sodomy or insult the Prophet Muhammad could face a death sentence. Brunei, a tiny nation with a population less than the city of Boston, is about 70 percent Malay Muslim and has at least a 15 percent ethnic Chinese non-Muslim minority. It is one of the wealthiest countries per capita in the world, relying heavily on natural gas and oil exports for its income. Yeah I want to live in a World where Sharia law is considered OK?

I don't even think the equivalent of a 2 pack a day smoker would hit it based on my back of the napkin math.) 318 TACOMA, WASH. — In her last moments of life, Army nurse Capt. Jennifer Moreno heard two orders. One was a call to help a wounded soldier struck by a blast in a booby-trapped killing field at an Afghanistan bomb-making compound. The other was a command to stay put lest she strike another mine in the bomb belt. The nurse from Madigan Army Medical Center chose to help the wounded soldier, and gave her life trying. In the words of her commander, Moreno ran "into hell" to rescue a comrade on the night she was killed. Still, Moreno's body remained where she fell. Crockett got as close as he could to the fallen nurse, attached a drag line to her and pulled her to the safe area. With Moreno recovered, the operators made the call to leave the compound. Finally, they got out of hell. They did not leave one of their own behind.

326 NBC is remaking as a TV movie Rosemary's Baby.

--

Ronan can play Rosemary.  Yeah, this will suck.  It will never capture the horror of the original...which still ranks up there with pretty darned creepy all these decades later.  Rosemary will #suspectsomething when she is brought a strange drink by Minnie, and told to wear a smelly #tannisroot necklace.  She is also vegan now, so the #eatingrawmeat scene will be reworked to be animal friendly.

Oh, silly tsrblke, you used your own brain. Your teacher almost certainly taught that it was only the *bad* kind of Communism that doesn't work in reality. Actually, I have no idea what your teacher taught, but that's how it was taught to us in Deep Red (even then) Texas.

I believe that the taxes are incidental to the real purpose which is to keep track of your movements either by Zip Tag or license plate pictures.

The idea of paying road taxes by manditory GPS recorders in cars keeps getting shut down so this is almost as good.

351 Levin had a former NFL player call in who he knows called Clint Didier who also played for the Redskins. Didier said that the Redskins were named originally by three Native American players? who wanted the team named in honor of them. I have no idea if this is factual. Didier believes it. He said if the Redskins remove the name, and then it follows that every business, town, street , etc. will have to do the same, he feels that removes a way of honoring and remembering Native Americans. Agree. Only the perpetually aggrieved disagree. This guy is now retired to Washington State, and is running for Congress. He has been farming a 1000 acres in Washington in an area that has just been designated by the Fish and Wildlife service to have some endangered specie, and now his farm operation is being interfered with. He has decided to run for Congress again after he failed to win a seat in 2010. http://www.didier4congress.org/index.html

The problem is that when you concentrate power, someone is going to grab it and hold it over people. The type of person who is likely to be successful doing that is not likely to be a nice person.

Posted by: tsrblke, PhD(c) (No Really!) at May 01, 2014 09:02 AM (HDwDg) The problem is that they see "the people" as a collective entity. From Rousseau's "General Will" to the NAZI's "Volk" and the Soviet's "Proletariat" the Left believe in a willful collective intent that spontaneously pops into existence. In a way, it is the Left that are believers of "Intelligent Design" abet with themselves as the singular "God." Since a collective will would never work against itself, there would be no fear of tyranny. After all, you can trust the political leadership to divine what the collective right is, eh comrade?

Attending private school explains why you weren't indoctrinated with the "corrected" intepretation of Animal Farm, even though you're a youngster.

The pro-Communist interpretation was part of the public school indoctriation program in the 1980s.
