Truce Broken in Kiev; "Special Police" Fire on Unarmed Protesters
— Ace

Dramatic video below the fold of protesters carrying riot shields, being fired upon by government troops.

Hot Air digests the end of the very brief truce. It is now estimated that somewhere between 25 and 50 people have been killed; most of these (if not all) would be protesters.

Snipers firing upon protesters:

Read the media reports, from CNN, NYT and elsewhere.  I posted one upthread.  The accounts are consistent: Cops were standing down and pulling back to repect the truce, when a large group of protestors charged them throwing molotov cocktails.  At that point, the cops had to use their guns or lose them.

From the NYT, in which one of the "peaceful protesters" admits they broke the truce:

“There will be many dead today,” Anatoly Volk, 38, one of the demonstrators, said. He was watching stretchers carry dead and wounded men down a stairway slick with mud near the Hotel Ukraina.

Mr. Volk said the protesters had decided to try to retake the square because they believed the truce announced around midnight was a ruse. The young men in ski masks who led the push, he said, believed it was a stalling maneuver by President Yanukovych to buy time to deploy troops in the capital after the authorities decided the civilian police had insufficient forces to clear the square.

“A truce means real negotiations,” Mr. Volk said. “They are just delaying to make time to bring in more troops. They didn’t have the forces to storm us last night. So we are expanding our barricades to where they were before. We are restoring what we had.”

Posted by: Jon (not the troll) at February 20, 2014 07:41 AM (DPMu1)

When exactly has it been common practice to employ snipers to handle protests?   That's confusing to me.   If you're genuinely trying to keep a handle on protester    violence    I can't imagine that    picking off individual troublemakers with sniper rifles is going to calm tensions.

I freely admit I don't know for certain which side is "good" and which is "bad" in this instance.

Choom Boy and the teevee yappers seem to be rootin' for the so-called rebels, which makes me tend to favor the Ukraine government, but that's just a knee-jerk reaction based on recent history.

It is also my belief that no one who is talking about this knows what the real scoop is, and that sure as hell includes Poppin' Fresh.

I also agree with those who see this as presaging what's going to happen here unless some in authority (that would be Congress) remove heads from asses and start doing the jobs the swore to do when they accepted their gigs as Super Welfare Queens.

99 The so-called Kent State Massacre may very well have been started by the Weathermen. There is evidence to suggest that they fired first on the Nat'l Guardsmen, who in a panic, fired wildly. Just pointing out a pertinent historical parallel.

101 Read the media reports, from CNN, NYT and elsewhere. I posted one upthread. The accounts are consistent: Cops were standing down and pulling back to repect the truce, when a large group of protestors charged them throwing molotov cocktails. At that point, the cops had to use their guns or lose them. The video I just watched showed no molotov cocktails or any other form of attack on the police, who responded with lethal force. The police have been using heavy-handed tactics from the beginning. Eventually the some of the protesters are going to respond in kind.

The accounts are consistent: Cops were standing down and pulling back to repect the truce, when a large group of protestors charged them throwing molotov cocktails. At that point, the cops had to use their guns or lose them. Yeah, and these cops are just like western cops. Look up the term "agent provocateur" and then learn a little bit about how Russians are experts at using them.

286 If you support the protestors against their corrupt, proMoscow regime, go ahead, just don't claim they are "unarmed". "Outgunned", "outclassed", "underdogs", that would be accurate. "Unarmed" would be inaccurate, as they are toting a lethal weapon. Perhaps you are just ignorant of how effective a melee weapon a riot shield can be. It negates almost any nonlethal weapon such as those carried by cops to avoid using firearms; it can cover other people such as downed members of a violent mob; it covers arsonists from their own Molotov cocktails; and in a group of others with shields, it allows sheer weight to overwhelm a line of unshielded people, such as cops. My post was just a statement of fact. People with shields aren't unarmed. They came ready to tango. Or maybe you don't care and just enjoy the propaganda value of claiming your favorites are helpless victims, and only a "dick" would challenge that sentiment with mere facts?

334 Yes but we have come to expect manipulation from the media. We are far more trusting of the "man on the street" reporting on situations, at least it seems to me we are (not talking about the Ukraine here, just in general). Yet time and again it has been proven that witnesses may not be able to accurately describe a situation right in front of them. And we have also seen in places like Palestine where the people themselves are manipulating the videos or audios for effect. It concerns me that we expect to teach "critical thinking" to our kids in order for them to be able to make better informed decisions, yet the very information itself may be flawed.

Legitimately trying to understand why.  I can see where countries that share borders would have an interest in seeing it resolved quickly as to avoid spillage. I would think that outside interference is what would escalate these situations.

Why the concern for the Ukraine and not Thailand or Venezula or the Ivory Coast or the countless other protest/civil wars?

372 @346 What this is is another example of the failure of Obama's foreign policy. You should be very worried that no one gives a shit about what the USA does or doesn't do. The world does not live in a vacuum. Putin has already sucked up Syria and as soon as the Olympics are over he will end the Ukrainian "problem" Obama is simple not at home. This is when wars start. Someone steps over the line and it's on. We can only pray Val gets pissed off and does something. Barry won't.

There are no police to catch on fire or to use on iron bar on. And they are also using automatic weapons. Sorry, they have other less lethal weapons that can be used.

Well yes; given a choice between going with the Rooskis versus the EU is like a turd sammich against a diarrhea melt.  The area has been hammered by the boot of tyranny for over half a century so we don't know what the mindset of anybody who knows nothing else would be.  But we can acknowledge that there are deep differences and that at least some people are yearning for the type of life which we take for granted.  I'm guessing most of them are on the side of the protestors.  I'm willing to go so far as to call that an educated guess.  But what you want versus what you get may not line up so well.
