Ukrainian President Flees Kiev [CBD]
— Open Blogger

President Yanukovych has fled the capitol city of Kiev and is reportedly near the border with Russia.

And Open Thread.

[addendum] Yanukovych now claims that this is a coup and that he will not step down.

Japan Times:

“I am not leaving the country for anywhere. I do not intend to resign. I am the legitimately elected president,” Yanukovych told a local television station in the eastern city of Kharkiv.

And the pro-government faction pushes back

“Who is in charge of the clattering train?
The axles creak and the couplings strain,
and the pace is hot and the points are near,
and sleep hath deadened the driver's ear,
and the signals flash through the night in vain.
For death is in charge of the clattering train.”

Edwin J. Milliken, quoted by Winston Churchill in the debate on the air estimates in the House of Commons, 19 March 1935

So? Duh!1 flees?

No surprise.

6 The next 24-48 hours could be pivotal in Kiev. They're freeing prisoners, Ministers have shifted allegiances, the President has fled, probably in fear for his life. If a General or two shows up on the protestors side, interesting times ahead.

7 Wow. I knew he'd be out sooner than later. Gone before the Sochi Olympics officially ended. BBC President Viktor Yanukovych and opposition leaders signed a peace deal on Friday after several days of violence in which dozens of people died in a police crackdown on months of protest. But the deal failed to end the protests and huge crowds remain in Independence Square, the Maidan. An opposition figure has announced to the protest crowds in Independence Square that the president has resigned. This has not been confirmed, but the crowds reacted with huge cheers.

12 This morning I was reading a blogger's take on the Rosenbergs. He said no one knew what happened to Joel Barr but I was sure he popped up in Russia with Alfred Sarrant. The story was that they were both well respected scientists in russia. But according to one of their wives, they were eased out in the early 60s from doing any useful work. The wife was the wife of Sarrant's friend and she abandoned her two small children to run away with this asshole when the FBI wanted to arrest him. Can you believe that? After he kicked the bucket, she wanted to send a letter to his family and a letter to her mother who was in her 90s but the commies said no. Did this dumbass ever think how sick it was that she even had to ask permission? And this is the shit that they want to impose on us. After commieland fell, she moved back to the US, SF of course. This woman is clueless. She's probably still singing the praises of Stalin. http://goo.gl/rtQ3z1 Who the fuck abandons their kids???

15 The Police were painted the bad guys being those responsible to maintain the semblance of order. They've left the scene. And protestors with journalists now roam the Presidential quarters without any official oversight from any government official. Not everyone in the government supported either Yanukovych or Putin. There's going to be fabrications of fabrications mounting. We'll see how the majority of Ukrainians respond to the conquests achieved and to be further gained by the most volatile protesters. ...How many Victors? Where's Victor? And as Putin promised to fulfill his end of the economic development treaty with whichever Ukrainian government would be, as soon as the violence ended, watch.

22 So the Ukraine gave up their nukes a decade or so ago, and the US has a treaty that says they would act to defend them from foreign attack right? Could it be partly because all the Really Swell People here -- including Choom Boy and the media -- seem to have a crush on the rebels? I heard Brian Williams babbling about the Egyptian rioters protesters when describing the Ukraine situation.

I still have no idea who is right in this. Granted, it would probably serve the country better to align with the West than with Mother Russia, but that's their business, not ours.

One thing -- all the Lenin statues being pulled down -- not clear if it's anti-commie sentiment or just anti-Russian. I think more anti-Russian. This is more an ethnic revolution than ideological. 83 Ukraine, stuck between a rock and a hard spot. It shares the sentiment spot that prevailed against Poland's self interest when facing Hitler's Germany, refusing any treaty with Stalin's Russia because of historical prejudicial experience. No, I'm not referencing "politics" except as such exist today; i.e., ECONOMICS. Though ideologically Ukrainians would prefer more relations West, the EU is in no position to invest any money to economically develop Ukraine. Furthermore, the EU has no natural gas to pipeline into Ukraine. Putin's boots and tanks in Georgia "happened a long time ago, several administrations ago; so at this point, what difference should that make?" (H. Ruthless C.) Well, we'll see. All things considered, Putin is not Stalin, and likely doesn't care to replicate Stalin's era. Even Khrushchev purposely ended the Stalin Era as being absurdly counter productive, self destructive. In a word, insane. There's already a trade treaty with Russia. Russia is already set to spend billions providing natural gas into Ukraine 1/3 below current customer cost, and to provide funding for the Ukraine development of nuclear energy. It's that last part that sets DNA on edge, despite "jobs, jobs, jobs." It's one thing to build a pipeline. Quite the other to dig your own grave. As if the world needs another nuclear waste production site, this one situated at the Eurasian crossroads. Ukraine consists of fertile plains (steppes) with plenty of rivers, and bordering mountain ranges (Carpathian and Crimean). Wikipedia references it as "the largest wholly European country". When Poland's Solidarity Union Members achieved their political victory, I don't recall every member of Poland's government (including Police) running away like rats abandoning a sinking ship. Hopefully, all segments of Ukrainian citizens will be granted their rightful representation in government and Ballot, and not be dominated by the most activist interests in the power game of upheaval, King of the Mountain.

95 This won't end well. We've seen this movie before in Europe and most specifically with the old Soviet Union.

It is pretty clear that Mr. Obama and Mrs Clinton have not only destroyed American credibility and influence in the world. But they have made it a much more dangerous place for us and anyone who seeks free and democratic government.

That Russia feels safe to give license to shoot civilians engaged in protest and the further harbor hopes of subjugating an otherwise independent nation is telling of how far we have fallen.

Declaring some part of the citizenry of an independent state is someone comprised of your states citizens, then taking over that independent state under the guise of "protecting" them is one of the oldest tricks in the dictatorial book.

That hasn't been done since the end of World War II and the chaos which ensued in the aftermath. Congratulations to Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton. It takes real talent to break a peaceful period  and the democratic gains which have lasted almost 70 years.

106 From InterpreterMag -- Currently, the now-former President of Ukraine has no legal status, according to the Rada. But he has also lost control on the ground. The police have evaporated, the Berkut riot police have joined the protesters, and most of the governors are working with the Rada, not the President. The only power the President MAY have is if he can get the military to follow his orders. Short of that, he’ll need international help — from Russia — in order to regain control of the country.

111 interpretermag -- There is now officially a constitutional crisis in Ukraine: Here are the basics facts. The Rada (parliament), two nights ago, finally had enough members to form a quorum. At that point in time, they were legally allowed to pass new laws – and thus, they are a legitimate parliament. President has refused to recognize the Rada, and has not signed the laws. As such, the Rada has the power to pass the laws without signature.

127 The protesters tactic of provoking the police to murder some of them worked. This whole thing was a stalemate for months, years, really. It was only after 100 protesters were killed by the cops that public and international support shifted overwhelmingly to them. It's a good tactic if your enemy is not totally ruthless. Many police and army resigned or refused when ordered to shoot fellow Ukrainians. The protesters forced a crisis. It wouldn't have happened without the bloodshed, though.

This guy is smarter than the average bear, by a long shot. He is working to establish Russia's NEW leadership that has evolved beyond denying history in order to pretend faults or strengths never were, or always were. In the game of chess, he's a top dog. In the global economy, he would rather Russia have prevalence than the dominant China. Unlike our current Oval Office vacationing resident who sows the seeds of destabilizing destitution where ever bozo goes, Putin would rather see stability. When the Russian President makes a better case for prosperity than the American President, HOUSTON: WE HAVE A PROBLEM. And no, morons, Putin ain't my hero. But even if I "could", I wouldn't unnecessarily cross him because Détente proves best, all things considered. And Ukrainians are doing poorly, standing in need of natural gas and economic development in order to even consider participating with the EU. Ironic, that Russia could well provide Ukraine its "deliverance". Anyway, this could be Putin's chance for propaganda glory. And we all know how he loves being seen the hero. (who doesn't?)

The weird thing is, Harry Truman, without consulting with anyone, had the same plan bak during the Berlin Crisis. His plan (developed with his speech writers!) was to send the Chief Justice on a mission to communicate directly with Stalin, bypassing our allies, and all of the people who had been negotiating with the Reds from a position of strength. When everyone else found out about this, they rushed to Truman and explained that it would blow up our allies confidence, and make the U.S. look incredibly weak (i.e., "You're a fcuking idiot.") Truman got the message and called it off.

154 Right, some snipers shot protesters. Some police and some SBU agents shot the protesters. Most of Ukraine seems to have recoiled in horror at the bloodshed. Forcing the crisis forced people in the middle, who probably were just trying to keep their head down and not take sides, to choose a side. And the rank and file cops who really do believe in law and order and probably did see many of the protesters as thugs and hooligans (cause probably a fair # were thugs and hooligans) didn't want to be part of a force that was using snipers to shoot the protesters.

185 A telling comment from Jonah Goldberg: "National Bolshevism must strike some on the left as quite perplexing. After all, Bolshevism and Nazism — like fascism and socialism — are opposites, right? ...... First, let's clear some underbrush. The idea that Communism and Nazism are opposites is more of a utilitarian idea than a core conviction for the Left. It is a rationalization that allows the Left to cut around the historical tumor of Nazism and fascism and say, That has nothing to do with us. But the simple fact is that the hard Left has always endorsed or at least sympathized with national-socialist countries. What do you think Cuba is? It's nationalistic and it's socialistic. Venezuela under Chávez and now Maduro is nationalist and socialist. Nicaragua in the 1980s, etc., etc. Read a speech by any socialist dictator and swap out the word "socialize" for "nationalize": The meaning of the sentences doesn't change one iota. "

221 Right, this isn't over until Putin decides it's over. If we look at what Putin has done in other former Soviet republics -- it's to use the ethnic Russian minority as an excuse. So not an invasion, but a "protection" force. Putin is also not above some false flag atrocities against the ethnic Russians in the Crimea. Given how angry the Ukrainians are, some Ukrainian bully boys might do it for him. If not, Putin will do it himself. But Russia has to have a secure corridor to the Crimea and Sevastopol.

The 48% who never voted for Chavez have been distressed for a long, long time. Along with the obvious deterioration of the economy under crude socialism, there has been a steady closing of doors for peaceful opposition. Chavez used his economic power to reward friends and punish enemies, to shut down papers and stations opposing him in the name of "fairness" and "national security." The Dinesh D'Souza's are arrested on dubious charges. The IRS and other agencies oppress anyone who might help the opposition to Holy Socialism and Dear Leader Chavez. Elections come and go. Always the same result, no matter how awful the government is. Ballots are found in trucks. Districts with 100,000 people turn in 200,000 votes. Chicago. Police protection is removed from districts that are anti-Chavez. Gangs and narco-punks are enlisted to maintain order, the order that Chavez wants. The judiciary is politicized and the rule-of-law becomes a joke. Congress means nothing as the Leader rules by decree. There is a reason why my mother has been calling Obama "Baby Hugo" since 2008. (She is Cuban but has several relatives in Venezuela.) The problem for the chavistas is that crime and economic distress have woken the LIVs up and they are now siding with the anti-socialists.

Yanukovych has already been removed by the Rada.  It's not "controlled by protesters" at all, really -- it has a perfectly legal quorum because a significant number of Yanukovych's own ruling Party of Regions came over to the opposition side after the violence and have voted with them on the reforms.  The legal aspects of what is going on right now are in fact quite legal from a procedural perspective, not a 'coup' at all.

257 172. irongrampa Interesting date marking the conquest of Christian Syria and the Levant by the Muslims who began their conquests from the Arabian Deserts. But for most Americans whose concept of history BEGINS after the US/Vietnam War, our public misconception assumes the Syria is an uncivilized backwater, which Syria is not. Furthermore, it is our own American culture that functions on the premise of "change" for its own sake, a disposable culture as some could critique. As far as the Muslim conquests went, yes, a lot of killing of all who would not conform. Hence, a great loss of the "best" thinkers where ever Arabian Desert Muslims chose not to adapt according to what they learned along their route from civilizations absorbed. That said, within each respective society, during the Ottoman Empire, the typical Christian serf and peasantry were no better off than the typical Muslim. Europe still has its own inbred problems today, immigration or not, self destructing. As do we Americans, yet demanding more legislation to fix our problems in life. According to the US State Department, in Syria, education is free and compulsory from ages 6 to 12. Schooling consists of 6 years of primary education followed by a 3-year general or vocational training period and a 3-year academic or vocational program. The second 3-year period of academic training is required for university admission. Total enrollment at post-secondary schools is over 150,000. The literacy rate of Syrians aged 15 and older is 90.7% for males and 82.2% for females. It doesn't seem right to typecast Syrians as uneducated and unsophisticated. Those terms apply to the "modern" American populations, too, each subsequent generation. Cleveland observed the obvious loud and clear "a long time ago" in 1908.

259 Looks like, for now, it's just the n-word. Sounds like they also considered penalizing some gay slurs, too. I assume fag. Pretty sure trash talking is all about questioning the other dude's manhood and implying he's a pussy. For now, it looks like the NFL is just determined to ban the n-word.

269 248. KG To us in America, yes, absolutely. I'm still thinking about what I heard this morning; can't yet say what all I make of it. But still, persuasive arguments made RT.com Keiser Report. Earlier this morning, Alasdair MacLeod mentioned TARP, the US tax funds given to the global banks to guarantee the Dollar stay the base for trade, but that the global banks did a "yo-yo trick" appearing to put the money forward (to lend) but immediately retracting it for themselves. Hording. The propagandized "trickle down economics" argument proved to prevent upward mobility. America has yet to "get it right" diplomatically south of our border. All the NAFTA type treaties are "sins" in the sense that they only benefit the wealthiest involved, completely "missing the mark" of uplifting opportunities for the working class. Keiser Report episode 566 "Max Keiser and Stacy Herbert discuss the new game called the Hunger Gains. In a financialzed zero-sum world, Housing Gains plus Hunger Pains equals The Hunger Gains. This game is sponsored by China, however, and if they withdraw their sponsorship by dumping their trillion in US Treasuries, a new game called working may have to happen. In the second half, Max interviews Alasdair MacLeod of Goldmoney.com about the redemption of emerging market currencies into the US dollar mirroring pre-WW1 bank runs, except on a global scale. With this ongoing global bank run happening, it is China that is buying up all the gold."

270 Just because someone is legitimately elected doesn't mean they can't be removed from power for violations of law. Look what happened to Honduran President Zelaya. Both the Honduran Congress and Supreme Court found him guilty of trying to illegally change the Constitution and he was thus kicked out, although the Left (especially our President and Sec of State Clinton) considered it a coup, given Zelaya's Leftist tendencies, and threatened sanctions unless the "legitimate" President was re-instated. Dictators: once you elect a Dick, you're usually stuck with him.

Or do the 47 % have a stronger hand? Margarita, it's rther chilling the similarities to what we feel is starting here isn't it? Posted by: willow at February 22, 2014 12:54 PM (nqBYe) ----------------------------- The similarities are indeed chilling! I don't know about the short term in Venezuela. The chavistas will not give up power easily. But if they can get rid of them, Venezuela's prospects are very good. Venezuela still has a strong, if currently reeling, middle class. It's a 2nd-world+ country, not all that poor. (Well, I mean it WASN'T.) They aren't used to this kind of deprivation. They look at neighboring Colombia, always a much poorer country and one that they kind of looked down on, and they can see the economic growth. They can see toilet paper from their houses!!! The crime (much of it state-sponsored) and deprivation have become intolerable and I do not think the opposition will back down. They want to be Chile, not Cuba. One of my mom's cousins is a university professor in Caracas. Unlike our slavish, Caesar-worshipping academics, the students and profs are solidly against chavismo. I hope they can prevail. Our prayers wouldn't hurt!

J.J., regarding what you said about Jews getting out of the Ukraine, from what I've been told, a lot already have.  Some years ago I worked with this guy from the Ukraine, who was also Jewish.  When I asked him how he ended up in Texas, he said that one of the reasons was that in recent years he and his family had started to get fucked with for being Jewish in the Ukraine, and he'd had enough.  He also mentioned that a lot of other Jews there had moved out for the same reasons.  The more things change and all that...
