US vs. Canada Hockey Semi-Final
— DrewM

NBCSN-Noon eastern, live stream here.

This is the rematch weÂ’ve been waiting for for four years.

Unfortunately itÂ’s in the semis, instead of the gold medal game because Canada couldnÂ’t take care of Finland (BenÂ’s favorite team) in regulation time of the last round-robin game.

So we will just have to extract our revenge when we can and look forward to playing Sweden who beat Finland in the Dirty Scandi Bowl (aka, the other semi-final) for the gold.

But is Team USA good enough to beat the team many had as the gold medal favorites coming into the tournament? Surprisingly the answer isÂ….I donÂ’t know.

The US was the 2nd ranked team behind Sweden after the round-robin and led all teams with 20 goals scored. This was particularly good news because goal scoring was expected to be a problem for this team.

So all is good for Team US, yes? Well, no.

While they had no problem handling teams like Slovenia, Slovakia and an elderly Czech Republic team in the quarterfinals, there was one noticeable blipÂ…the shootout win over Russia in the round-robin. Now a win is a win you may say and thatÂ’s true but Russia was the only remotely peer competitor the US has faced thus far and they almost blew it. If not for a disallowed goal with a little over 4 minutes left in the game the US might very well have lost to a disappointing Russian team that was bounced in the quarters by Finland. Even with the fortunate net off the mooring call it took 4 extra rounds in the shootout to put the Russians away. One less goal by T.J. Oshie or one less save by Jonathan Quick and the Russians win that game and the whole tournament might look very different at this point.

Fortunately things arenÂ’t exactly rosy across our northern border. Team Canada was supposed to be so loaded at forward that they were able to leave a guy like Claude Giroux home because hey, who needs another crazy talented forward on a team filled with perennial all stars, scoring leaders and future Hall of Famers? Well, it turns out Canada does. For all their fire power up front and my God do they have it, their forwards have been outscored by their defensemen. Two of their defensemen, Drew Doughty and Shea Weber to be exact. Doughty/Weber have 7 goals so far, all Canadian forwards have 6 (that includes 3 from Jeff Carter in a game against noted hockey power, er, Austria). That is not how Hockey Canada imagined this when they drew up their game plan.

This match up is happening in the semis and not the gold medal game because Canada couldnÂ’t put Finland away in overtime. And this match up almost didnÂ’t happen at all because they barely beat Latvia in a game that shouldnÂ’t have been any more challenging than an intra-squad scrimmage for them. A 20 year old AHLer making 50 plus saves against the mightiest of the mighty from the NHL? Sure, we all saw that coming.

So while Team USA has met every challenge put before it, thereÂ’s still a nagging feeling that they really havenÂ’t been tested by an A level team. On the other hand, Canada simply isnÂ’t playing like an A level team thus far. Will the scare from Latvia be the wake-up call this insanely talented group needs to get going or are they really just a collection of incredibly great players that canÂ’t seem to get out of each otherÂ’s way?

IÂ’m pretty confident that no matter which Team Canada shows up today, the US can handle them. TheyÂ’ve had two more days to practice together and work on some of the looseness that has occasionally snuck into their game (odd man rushes against and occasionally ill-advised breakout passes).

ThereÂ’s no doubt that the US can skate with Canada, especially on the blue line (watch the top US pair of Ryan Suter and Ryan McDonagh, so much talent). Up front the Kessel-Pavelsky-van Reimsdyck line has been flying and scoring almost at will, while the Backes-Brown-Callahan unit will run you over all day long while playing a skilled offensive game very few others in the world can match. In goalÂ…yeah. Look, Jonathan Quick is great. HeÂ’s a Conn Smythe Trophy winner (best player in the playoffs) and a Stanley Cup champion so heÂ’s got the game. ItÂ’s just not a game that makes you comfortable watching. He throws himself around like a reckless Dominick Hasek and while it works for him, itÂ’s scary as hell.

Canada meanwhile has to get their forwards going. ItÂ’s hard to imagine Canada getting to the gold medal game, let alone winning it, with Sidney Crosby stuck on 2 assists. Yes, he contributes a ton more than just offense but heÂ’s the best player in the world. That kind of offensive production isnÂ’t going to cut it. Unlike in an NHL game or series itÂ’s very hard to wear down defensemen with physical play on the big ice surface but unlike the other teams the Canadians have faced, the US forwards should be quick enough to get out and defend against Weber/Doughty and to make them think twice before joining the play as much as they have been (especially Doughty).

If this were a best of 3,5 or 7 series IÂ’d be very comfortable saying the US wins more often than not. In a one game elimination scenario a crazy hot goalie (Hello Latvia!) or a crazy bounce (Hello Russia) can turn the game.

But even though I donÂ’t think you can read too much into the play of either team coming into this one, the US clearly is the team playing most like it wants to be playing and executing closer to ideal in all areas of the game. For those reasons IÂ’m picking the US to win and advance to the Gold Medal game where they will face down the Scand menace from Sweden on Sunday.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at February 21, 2014 12:46 PM (XyM/Y) Millions of fans of South Korean figure skater Yuna Kim, angered by her loss to Adelina Sotnikova, have started a petition on Change.org, addressed to the International Skating Union (ISU), to demand an investigation into judging decisions of Women's Figure Skating and a "rejudgement at the Sochi Olympics". Kim, known as the "Queen" in South Korea, finished at 219.11 points for silver, while Adelina of Russia won the gold with 224.59 points. Italy's Carolina Kostner came in third at 216.73. Several leading skating figures and researchers also came in support of Kim, who now has announced her decision to retire from the sport. German figure skater Katarina Witt tweeted: "Shame Gold Medal, Yuna Kim is a real queen," while American Sports Journalist posted: "Kim didn't win...unbelievable...scandal written all over this...Russian Sotnikova wins, fans going crazy, Kim disappears, wrong, wrong."

245 Of all the figure skating events,   ice dancing is by    far the most tainted when it comes to biased judges.   This is not the first time an ice dancing medal has been awarded to a skater or skaters who clearly didn't deserve it as much as a competitor.

246 I'm ok with the figure skating results. All the Russians were getting inflated points even in Team events, but in women's the Russian girl really did skate a harder program, faster speed, more energy and with more point collecting opportunities. She reminded me of the Japanese guy who won gold. The Korean skater's program was beautiful and flawless, but slower in speed and less jumps so she had a lower max possible score. The judging system they use now is actually harder to be unfair on then the more subjective one they used to have.

270 Turkey has become a principal financial hub for terrorists under the leadership of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose government has helped Iran skirt sanctions, supported jihadi groups in Syria, and provided financial backing to Hamas, according to a new report by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD). Turkey, a key U.S. ally, “has turned a blind eye” to terror financing and is potentially on the verge of crossing the line to becoming an official state sponsor of terrorism, according to the Friday report, which cites the Erdogan government’s close ties to some of the world’s top terror organizations and operatives. The report comes just a day after 84 U.S. lawmakers and former government officials urged President Barack Obama to confront Erdogan over his harsh repression of political opponents. As Turkey’s support for terrorism expands, the Obama administration has remained silent out of fear of offending Erdogan, whom the White House considers a strategic asset, according to the report authored by FDD’s Jonathan Schanzer, a former terrorism finance analyst at the U.S. Treasury Department. Lots of the athletes have time once they're done competing.  Also, they're well aware of all the "OMG they're using zillions of condoms!" panic, and they think it's funny.  So they grab boxes of free condoms to feed that panic, even if they're not using them.  Again, it's funny.

I'm not saying there's not a ton of the secks going on, I'm sure there is.  But probably lots less than the condom counts are saying there is.

After a few days of being insulted non-stop, followed by getting ripped off by a cabdriver, my dad finally had enough when a French waiter got all mouthy with him. My dad stood right up in the restaurant and said, let's go, we're getting the hell out of here. We walked right out, freshly arrived food still on the table. We drove back down to the Adirondacks and had a very nice if impromptu vacation.

Posted by: Dave S. at February 21, 2014 10:26 AM (JCIjD)

501 I know hockey s always a goalie game, but holy crap was this a goalie game. Huge props to Quick - he got to play target/punching bag for an all-star NHL team and only let in one measly goal. Price was great too, but Quick faced a barrage.

Posted by: Holdfast at February 21, 2014 10:28 AM (JA7G/)

502 Late to the figure skating topic, work got busy... My take was that Yuna should have skated a harder program technically, if she was really set on winning; the Russian's starting scores or her long program were way higher after they were practically dead even in scores from the first day. But her big moment was four years ago; anything else is gravy for her. That being said, while the Russian was great I think she was wildly over scored. Eighteen points higher than her previous best score ?? Give me a break. But everything is so subjective. Eh, at least the Yulia phenom didn't medal, something about her bugged me. Also, how emotionally manipulative is it to play a holocaust victim in your free skate? Yeesh. Oh, and our celebs/politicians could take a page from Yuna Kim; donated her whole yearly salary to natural disaster victims. Is richer than god but very giving of her money.

507 I wish I had seen this earlier so that I could comment before the game. So much dumb "analysis." Obviously, the story of this game (and Canada's entire tournament) was their stifling defense. Apparently, no one learned anything from the Super Bowl, when the Seahawks defense throttled the record-setting Broncos offense. This was basically the hockey version of that.

Everyone focused on Canada's lack of scoring. No one was talking about the fact that they had allowed just three goals in the entire tournament (two deflections and a trick play right out of the Mighty Ducks playbook). Anyway, I was far from convinced that Canada would win the game (though I thought they would), but the dumbest thing is that Drew thinks that the US would win a best-of-seven against Canada. No way. Canada would win in six at most. They're just quite a bit better than the Americans.
