Washington Post Electoral Forecast Finds Republicans Have 82% Chance of Capturing Senate
— Ace

82%?

Meanwhile, an unrelated poll by USAToday/Pew predicts the possibility the largest GOP midterm gains in 20 years.

Yes, more than 2010.

Voters currently have so strong a preference for the Republican Party that if midterm elections were held today the results would signal the strongest gains for the GOP in two decades, a new poll has found.

According to the new USA Today/ Pew Research Center Poll conducted April 23-27 of 1,501 people, including 1,162 registered voters, 47 percent said they are inclined to support the Republican candidate over the Democrat in their congressional district in 2014, compared to 43 percent who would choose a Democrat.

That result is so massive that it suggests 2014 could be a major "wave" election more sweeping than the election of 2010 that saw the tea party movement's rise to dominance.

...

The GOP's lead in the generic congressional ballot is the largest at this point in the midterm cycle for Republicans in the past 20 years, including before the partisan "wave" elections in 1994 and 2010.

By way of comparison, in 1994 the same poll found that Republicans had only a +2 advantage in 1994 (which produced the first GOP-held House since 1952) and were net-even with Democrats in 2010.

The 1994 election produced +54 GOP House seats and, interestingly, +8 Senate seats.

I doubt the GOP can win more than a dozen new House seats (we've gotten nearly as many as we're likely to get) but that +8 Senate figure is possible.

WHY IN THE FUCK IS THE SUP CT NOT TAKING UP THE CONCEAL CARRY BULLSHIT LAW IN NEW JERSEY???

Does this not trouble anyone else?  If a govt official could, in their sole discretion, decide whether or not a woman was entitled to an abortion, would that pass the smell test????????

And in practice if this unilateral, unreviewable discretion of a government official meant that only the 1% would be entitled to a conceal carry license AND EVERYONE ELSE WAS FUCKED, would that pass the smell test????

50 Meanwhile over at CNN (I know, I know, bear with me), that sad old hack David Gergen has a piece bemoaning how Obama's presidency is grinding to a halt.

Gergen says that "It is in not in our national interest to have a lame duck for 33 months."

Bullshit.

Having Obama relegated to lame duck status is the best possible thing that could realistically happen, short of impeachment, which will never happen because Historic First.

After the Mittbot 3000 shorted out on Election Day 2012, and deep gloom and eeyorism descended upon many in the Horde, my advice was simple: "Don't panic, this is obviously bad, but not that bad."

I went on to explicitly liken Obama to Francois Hollande, and I predicted that Obama's popularity would fall very sharply to new lows once he was re-elected, and that his agenda would stall. I said that the trajectory from glowing re-election triumph to somber "Obama fatigue" would be a quick one. All is proceeding as I have foreseen.

What to do now? When your enemy is on the ground, that's the time to smile pleasantly and then kick the ever-lovin' shit out of him. Don't let up, don't slack off, keep the pressure on. At some point Obama's native laziness will take over and he'll retreat more and more to the quiet of the golf course. Just where we want him. Where he isn't making new mischief.

None too confident about ousting Begich in AK.

Alaskans always put on a rugged-individualist act, but the reality is that they love them some pork. That's why notorious trougher Lisa Morecokeski is the other half of their Senate delegation.

And Begich's pitch to Alaska is simple: he's young, he has moved up quickly in the seniority ranks for such a relative newcomer thanks to retirements, and he is positioned to bring home the bacon for them for decades to come if they keep returning him to D.C.

Don't underestimate frank cynicism as a political lever.

119 Would love IA, NH and VA, maybe even OR, since she is coming out strong against Obamacare now. IA is looking good. Joni Ernst had a second ad with her shooting Obamacare (suddenly the media noticed and had a fit, having forgotten Manchin doing the same thing). There's another possible candidate named Jacobs. Establishment type. Goldman Sachs money. Gave some money to Corzine, which will hurt him. I think the establishment really only likes him because he can self-finance. I'm a little worried about Ernst because she's only running on her resume of being a woman and a farmer. But if you get endorsed by Mitt and by Palin, you're doing pretty good. There are other candidates, but they won't win. The Dem, Braley, is a trial lawyer and proud of it. Made some monumentally stupid statements about how he was just a better person than the well-liked Grassley because Grassley's just a farmer but Braley is a lawyer. Sadly, no GOP candidate is likely to go full anti-lawyer but it will be interesting to see if "Hey, don't we already have too damned many lawyers in Congress" has any resonance.

There was a demand by democrats in 2001 that the GOP share chairmanships and committee appointments because 'fairness' demanded that democrats continue to hold power in congress even when the GOP gained seats. If the GOP gains majority control, the democrats will demand rights as minority to share power equally because fairness and sharing are good things, and it is only the evil GOP that obstructs justice, so democrats have to hold the power. It would be a smear on Obama.  The emperor would bleed.

The democrats kicked out of office would be out of a job.

The republicans would lose a big part of their "but we're not in power" excuse.

Democrats left in office would lose chairmanship on committees.

Republicans like Ted Cruz would have more power, not less.

148 The +2 in '94 and the "=" in 2010 were in September of those years, not April or May. In 1994 in particular, Democrats had a lead in the spring (as they usually do, typically they underperform the generic ballot by 2-3%), I think it was similar in 2010 (the Tea Party was just getting going). It's unprecedented for the GOP to have an edge in the generic poll this early. Hard to say what it means.

179 From now on, I am voting for "Ham Sandwich" in every election. I fully support Ham Sandwich because Ham Sandwich will do nothing. Sure, Ham Sandwich won't pass a budget, but neither will Republicans or Democrats. Ham Sandwich will not, however, vote to increase spending, then tell me that it cut spending because it intended to spend more. Ham Sandwich will not vote for any Obama nominees for anything. If Ham Sandwich is more electable than anyone because it is neither male, female gay, straight, or religious. Everyone loves a ham sandwich (except Jews and Muslims, but I respect their vote for Chicken or Pastrami sandwiches).

The comments contain a veiled reference to religion, and the part that religion might be playing in some of the current conflicts in Africa: “This is a time here in Africa where there are a number of different cross-currents of modernity that are coming together to make things even more challenging. Some people believe that people ought to be able to only do what they say they ought to do, or to believe what they say they ought to believe, or live by their interpretation of something that was written down a thousand plus, two thousand years ago. That’s not the way I think most people want to live.”

200 Dems distance themselves from Obamacare in 2014, weather the mid-term storm, take their lumps and then come back in 2016 doubling down on single payer healthcare in order to fix the system. Yayyy! Okay... putting on my "Cynical Political Strategist" hat. If I'm the DNC, I cut bait. Put just enough effort in to make it look like I'm not just "giving up" but, really, I'm giving up. I want just enough seats so that Rs don't have a veto-proof majority. Once I've managed that, I immediately start talking about how "now they have to turn their words into actions" (while obstructing them at every turn), and how "anyone can use pretty words, but what the American People want are results." I go ahead and throw Obama under the bus- studiously not for any policy reasons, but personality- "He just wasn't able to compromise," and "sometimes he needed a gentler hand." Make it clear that he's no longer supported- but that I believe his policies would have worked if they'd been managed better. Then, in 2 years (2016) I demand from the Republicans, "Where are the results?" Of course, I know the answer- there are none because I've ensured that. But I count on my allies in the Media to carry my water and do their best to make sure no one realizes that. Simultaneously, every Democrat (including whoever is selected as the Pres nominee) can run against Obama as "too belligerent" and run on a "return to the 3rd way." Ultimately I lose nothing- the Rs already control the House, so if they want to obstruct D objectives I can't stop them. But they won't have enough power to actually enact any of their own policies. Then in 2016 I stand a good chance (certainly far better than in 2014) of keeping the White House and retaking one or both houses of Congress.

Not happening. President Obama could drop-kick puppies and drown kittens on primetime national television and nothing would come of it, so what in the world would make you think Republican majorities in the House and Senate would have the nerve to impeach him?

No, what they'll do should they retain the House and take the Senate is what they've been doing: play go-along and get-along with the stealth socialist weasels transforming our country into an authoritarian superstate. And why would they do that? Because they're fearful of being labeled as obstructionists, just like they're fearful of being labeled as nativists and racists for not going all in for amnesty disguised as immigration reform, just like they're fearful of being labeled as rich fat cat enemies of the poor if they promise repeal of Obamacare, just like they're fearful of waging war on women if they speak out against abortion.

You do see the pattern, right?  They've been running away for so long and so often that running away has become a habit. They've forgotten that the purpose of an opposition party is to oppose.

If the GOP does manage to take over the Congress, so what?  The GOP LOSERship is directionless, at least when it comes to being able to clearly and concisely articulate any common sense conservative/libertarian vision of where they plan to take the nation.  As best as I can tell, their vision at this point is immigration reform -- when the Dem's are still in charge of the Senate...  That's nuts...

The reality is the GOP LOSERship establishment are really just Mudfarmers who gain and maintain their power by pulling their crony donor's out of the Burrocratic muck created by the excessive regulations and taxes.

The LOSERship has no vested interest in fixing anything for the majority of main street folks...  They'd lose their crony special interest support AND power.

For starters, if one really wants to change the climate in Congress, the politicians and Burrocrats should convert to a market sensitive defined pension contribution plan from their market insensitive defined benefit plans.   Then they'd all have a vested interest in common sense reform of excessive regulations and complex tax policies laced with all sorts of special interest crony deals...
