WH Sources: Putin May Order Troops to Seize More of Ukraine, Possibly as Soon as This Weekend
— Ace

Jake Tapper reporting; the "as soon as this weekend" is reported in the video at the top of the page.

Russia has formally accepted Crimea's request to join the Russian state. (Ahem.) They have troops on the Ukrainian border -- for purposes of "training exercises" -- and are furthermore infiltrating Spetsnaz commandos over the border in order to begin operations.

U.S. officials believe [that] Russia is invading Ukraine with its Spetsnaz—the special operations units and battalions attached to both the military and the country’s intelligence agencies.

An American intelligence report predicted that Russian provocateurs would look to instigate low-level street brawls or “skirmishes” in eastern and southern Ukraine.
U.S. intelligence officials now say Russia’s Spetsnaz are expanding into eastern and southern Ukraine, as well. The intelligence report from February assessed that Russian provocateurs would look to instigate low-level street brawls or “skirmishes” in eastern and southern Ukraine. The report also predicted that Russia’s shadow warriors would seek to pay off Ukrainians to attend pro-Russian rallies and in general fan the flames of separatism. And since then, eyewitnesses say, that’s exactly what’s happened.

...

Schindler said the GRU Spetznas were following a similar playbook of provocations or “active measures” taken in the Republic of Georgia following the country’s 2005 Rose Revolution. “This sort of Spetznas special operations, intel-driven exercise is the continuing Russian refinement of the same model used in Georgia,” he said.

Russia is reported to have troops along the entirety of the Ukrainian frontier, at least double the number they previously said would be taking part in this snap "training exercise."

Pro-Russian "crowds" meanwhile seized two Ukrainian warships in Crimea yesterday.

64 My prediction? Russia takes everything east of the Dniester. Invasion will involve attacks from Belarus. After that, there will be a declaration of independence from a ethnically Russian majority area in Estonia, and it will be "liberated" like the Crimea. NATO will not interfere because they will defacto recognize the "declaration of independence" and thus it isn't a NATO concern. Lather, rinse, and repeat for Latvia and Lithiuania.

Posted by: Cicero (@cicero) at March 21, 2014 04:12 PM (8ZskC)

152 The problem is there is no credible threat or action we can take that can deter Putin. There are economic things we can do that would make Russia's situation difficult but these are all things we should be doing anyway for our own economic well being--and we are not doing them. And even if we did take up balls to the wall energy production as a cudgel against Putin it would be a slow acting thing and he would have time to cement his control over Ukraine.

I have seen the US at war and it aint pretty. Seven years after going to war against people who killed 3000 civilians in a terrorist attack a majority of the country voted for a crypto muslim with an araby sounding name who promised to pull out of the fight as fast as he could. As a people, as civilians. we are too fractured to go to war (hot or cold) with a Russia that is united to a common goal.

After 5 years of Barry's PC purges I am not sure that the military is in a fit state to challenge the Russians on their own turf, and Ukraine is pretty much their front yard.

We have managed to fuck ourselves to the point that we really have no choice but to hunker down, hope things to go too haywire internationally, and pray for some sort of modern Great Re-Awakening to unite the nation behind a common ideal. Until then we are boned.

208 Something that I find has gone completely unremarked so far:

The EU's current grand poobah for external foreign policy is a Brit. Catherine Ashton.

She's a Labour party hack from way back, one of those people who has spent pretty much their entire adult life in politics without ever once having had what the rest of us would consider a real job.

Tony Blair stuck her into the House of Lords, and from there she gravitated on out into the rapidly metastasizing Eurocrat system in Brussels. She's been there since, accumulating steadily more power and influence.

Except... how did this person originally get her start in Labour politics, anyway? Via an outfit called CND. The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, a lefty peacenik bunch.

But what is now known in retrospect, from smuggled archival sources which became available after the end of the Cold War, is that CND had been a funded and controlled catspaw of Soviet intelligence from the very beginning. During the years that Ashton was active with them.

So when Putin, the ex-KGB officer, enters into negotiations with the EU's foreign policy chief regarding Ukraine and Crimea, he's got someone sitting across the table whom he already knows well. Very well indeed.

In case you do not get #203.

On September 17, 1939, Russia Attacked Poland.

Poland was attacked by the Nazis on Sept 1, 1939.  As Poland was desperately fighting off the Nazis, Stalin attacked Poland.  Stalin and Hitler divided Poland between them, as was previously negotiated by the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact.

And 70 years later, BHO used that date to announce he was screwing over Poland and the Czech Republic.  I suppose he could have picked Sept 29, 2009, because that would have been the 71st Anniversary of "Peace in our Time!"

315 OT: Mike Vick signed by the Jets for one year, $5M. WTF. I mean seriously. I know time has passed, but this dude is a sadist who tortured and killed dogs, God's most unconditionally loving creatures. Dig it if you can: "As the Little Red Dog lay on the ground, fighting for air, Quanis Phillips grabbed its front legs and Michael Vick grabbed its back legs. They swung the dog over their head like a jump rope then slammed it to the ground. The first impact didn't kill it. So, Phillips and Vick slammed it again. The two men kept at it, alternating back and forth, pounding the creature against the ground until, at last, the little red dog was dead." I don't give a shit what 'culture' you were raised in, you are a sick motherfucker if you can do that to a dog. Vick is filth, and the Jets were wrong to sign him.

320 Why would India be in Putin's bullpen on this shit ? Not doubting , but generally curious , cause I haven't heard about their territorial lusts , lately . What do they want , Pakistan , Sri Lanka ? Posted by: awkward davies Anyone that claims to understand India is lying. That said the anti-colonial grievance is still very strong in India. Add into the fact that they have resisted all encouragement to be a buffer at first between the West and the Soviets, and lately between the West and China. Think Switzerland with a billion poor people. And yes, the currency thing; my guess is they would like to create some kind of dollar alternative, but it's still a difficult proposition to begin with. Dollar-denominated finance is trillions more than all of their economies combined.

The caller described the dog, gave her phone number, and mentioned a website, lostmydoggie.com. I had never heard of it, but went there and found the listing immediately. While I never did see the dog, I knew what he looked like, his name, and how to contact his owner. Tonight I checked out the website and saw that he was no longer listed. At first I didn't know whether that meant that he had been found, or he was found dead. I checked the testimonials section and saw a note from the owner that he had been found three days later, in part with the help of strangers who had been contacted. It's a pretty neat site. Check it out.

414 I never had any issues with my Acer laptop.  I bought a middle of the road one about five years ago.  Dropped it a year ago and the screen busted.  However, I hooked it up to the HDTV and it works just fine to stream internet onto the TV.  Always was reliable and ran well.

I replaced it with an insanely expensive gaming laptop by Toshiba, which shit its pants back in late November, two weeks after the warranty ran out.  Fortunately, I have a good local PC repair shop that was able to fix it.  I shouldn't blame Toshiba though, it was ultimately Windows 8 that took the crap.  Toshiba customer service sucked donkey balls though.

458 Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland are all NATO members. If Putin invades those then the Treaty kicks in. Full stop. If Obama does nothing then he has essentially abrogated the treaty, the Euros are on their own, and lots and lots of hell breaks loose.

My prediction: Vlad fancies himself a latter day tsar. He wants the empire back and he wants to be running it. When he said that Kiev was the mother of Russian cities (paraphrasing) he meant that it belongs with Russia and he was going to take it. Ukraine will lose Kiev and everything east of the Dniester. The will lose all ports on the Black Sea back to Kherson, and maybe even Odessa. And Barky will do nothing until the NATO treaty is triggered. Then we will find out if he truly is the agent that Putin is handling.

Back to the geopolitics for a moment.

Why would India side with Russia (well, they pretty much are just sitting it out)?  Easy:  China.  It's all about China (for India), well, except when it's also about Pakistan (but that's ALSO about China, since China and Pakistan got cozy because of ..... India).  Oversimplification, but by far the biggest factor here.

More curious is China itself.  They typically, and rationally from their perspective, more or less smile on large power misbehavior, and block any UN consideration of same, as on average they would like to reserve that sort of freedom of action for their own selves.  So it's not wildly out of pattern for China to go easy on Moscow over this.  I'd speculate that Beijing also (again, with reason) regards Moscow's attempt to police up the mess that Ukraine was becoming (from Russia's standpoint) as pretty normal and sensible.  But .... Beijing cannot be thrilled by Russian assertiveness. (still hoping for a "surprise" breakthrough between Russia and Japan, driven by American weakness and Chinese boorishness)

Azerbaijan.  Have heard/seen speculation about "moves" against Azerbaijan.  But they already have a Med pipeline terminating in Turkey.  And Nagorno-Karabakh is firmly in Armenian hands, a quiet front there (Armenia maintains its historic close ties to Russia, for lots of boring sensible reasons, mostly being surrounded by - increasingly surly - Turks to the south, annoying Azeris to the east, nutcase Georgians to the west, and the partly-crazy Caucasus to the north.

Don't see any action WRT Azerbaijan coming out of this.  Also would be very surprised at any real action in the Baltics.  Russia has used the large Russian minorities, esp. in Latvia, as levers/real issues vs. the Baltics since the break-up.  That will continue.  Overall, Putin's behavior so far accords with Russian vital interests (Crimea, Ukrainian non-alignment with the west, energy transport routes).  Messing with Poland or the Baltics gives Putin nothing of value, while running the (stunningly tiny, remote) risk of actually provoking serious Euro or US behavior.
