Whoops: Detroit Home Invaders Attempt to Batter Down Door of Citizen Armed with an Assault Gun
— Ace

Assault gun? Whatever, I'm sure the left will call it that eventually.

Via Hot Air. As you probably know, Detroit's chief of police is actively recommending that citizens buy guns in order to defend themselves.

1 This does not meet the Critical Information Needs. Rewrite this story and have the children killed because there was a gun in the home.

16 So at the end of the previous thread, someone posted the latest loopiness from Louis Farrakhan, which includes this gem:

"This includes The Mother Wheel, a massive spaceship that he believes remains in orbit and will eventually rescue Nation of Islam adherents from earth."

All I have to say about that is HURRY THE FUCK UP on this plan.

Dear "Mother Wheel" please take ALL the muzzies, not just Farrakhan's bunch. Somewhere else. Somewhere else that is far, far away. About two hundred million light-years from Earth sounds good.

As an aside, practically speaking does the stopping power really matter? I remember reading an interesting article (linked here I think) saying that stopping power for humans is sort of a myth. Growing up shooting different guns, if I wanted to effectively defend myself at short/mid-range I'd want a small caliber rifle with like a 30 round banana clip. That or katanas.

77 I remember reading an interesting article (linked here I think) saying that stopping power for humans is sort of a myth. That may have been me. I found some information that caliber isn't that big a deal in home invasion/burglary type deals. I'd also argue that facing a 'wrongful death suit' by stupid descendants and impoverished lawyers is a very, very big deal. So just put a small caliber bullet into a very big dude and he's suddenly dissuaded from whatever intent was on his mind. He'll live, maybe be a pint low, but survive. The study seemed to indicate that shooting a perp with any caliber, even small, had never subsequently ended with the victims of the criminal action dying.

That's something that bugs me about the legal requirement that says "If they're leaving, the threat is ended and you can't shoot at them anymore."

What do I know about why they're leaving?  Maybe they're going to get more weapons.  Maybe they're getting more thug friends.  Maybe they're getting over their initial fright and steeling their resolve to fight me.

Now they have to go to court, and hearings, and etc. etc. The new police Chief, imported from Maine, has come out publicly in favor of conceal carry and armed citizens in Detroit. There is no way the police dept. depleted due to the bankruptcy, etc. can effectively answer all the calls. What I find amazing in the story is that she has a husband. I give this woman a lot of credit.  Made of very stern stuff.  I do think that said troublemaker that dropped his weapon, retrieved it, and then came back for more should have been a likely candidate for elimination from the gene pool since he didn't leave the AO like he should have.  By the by, I am not a fan of warning shots.  Rounds can can end up in all sorts of places you don't want them, better to show use of lethal force and then use it than fire a round and have it end up where you don't want it to.  Just my ROE training coming to the fore I guess.

OT, Russian snipers are no joke.  Or, more specifically, snipers with experience are no joke.  One of my section leaders was killed by the Chechynian sniper "Juma" in Baghdad in 2005.  Saw it on his youtube video a couple days later.  Luckily some green beenies tagged him soon after before he could add more to his total.

177 In NYC, even post Heller, one is prohibited from owning a long gun with magazine capacity over 5, count em 5 rounds. So, "warning" shots are right out. But its kind of a moot point, because NYC law requires the gun to be stored, even in the home, unloaded, and locked, with the ammo locked separately. This is blatantly unconstitutional post Heller (really post 2A, but the Supremes finally figures at least that much out). But someone needs to take the NYC law on head on. I love the NRA, but I suspect that due to the politics and how things would play out in PR they just leave NYC alone. There are many of us in NYC who don't "deserve what we voted for" because, like Backwards Boy, we never in fact voted for this sh*t.

I used to have one.  A garden variety broomhandle - not the Han Solo version.  At the time 7.63 Mauser ammunition was essentially unavailable so I shot 7.62 Tokarev ammunition from it which was pretty much identical in external dimensions.  The only caveat was to avoid steel jacketed Czech submachinegun ammunition which was loaded absurdly hot.

It was not particularly reliable when all ten rounds were loaded in the magazine.  I take that to be related to the magazine leaf spring being old and the gun having spent more than half a century in storage somewhere in China.  Maybe it was a weak recoil spring.  I don't know.  I kept meaning to replace those springs but I never did before I sold it.  Loaded with eight rounds, it worked pretty well.  It was lots of fun to shoot.  Recoil was mild but it was really loud.  I got a kick out of the tangent sight that went up to 900 meters.  I never shot it at a range that went out that far so I can't say just how optimistic that range setting was.

I would be surprised if she was aiming or even had the gun on her shoulder since she had only had the gun for a few weeks and she didn't hit any of them.  Still, the gun did what it was there for - it kept her and her children safe.

Pistol caliber carbines like this are a better choice than shotguns for people who are not familiar with firearms and who don't really want to take the time to get familiar with them.  A lot of newbies are surprised and frightened by shotgun recoil, particularly from a 12 gauge.  Despite what many people say, a shotgun is not the best choice to use indoors.  A little bit of range time with instructions on how to use the sights and she ought to be hitting the center of mass on a consistent basis.
