— Ace Good question.
When they were slaughtering other children -- boys -- our press and political establishment (but I repeat myself) seemed rather not to care.
This focus on Boko Haram from both the media and the government is an unqualified good. The press arguably increased the pressure on global governments to do something about this backwards group of terrorists. But Boko Haram is not a new phenomenon. It was not long ago that some – including this author – were asking why this group’s atrocities were not generating any attention in the press. On February 25, between 40 and 59 children were killed by the fundamentalist militant group. Early that morning, Boko Haram terrorists attacked a boarding school and shot many of children, aged 11 to 18, while they slept. Some of the students were gunned down as they attempted to flee. Others had their throats slit. In some buildings, Boko Haram militants locked the doors and set the building alight. The occupants were burned alive.
All of the victims were boys. Reports indicated that the young girls the militants encountered were spared. According to the BBC, the militants told the girls to flee, get married, and shun the western education to which they were privy.
Beyond wire reports and a handful of segments on globally-focused outlets like NPR, this atrocity went unremarked upon in the popular news media.
February 25 was not Boko HaramÂ’s first atrocity. By March, more than 1,000 people had been killed in the countryÂ’s northeast since the first of the year. Prior to Boko HaramÂ’s shift in tactics, from wholesale slaughter of young men to the kidnapping of young women, the group traveled from village to village where they killed children and razed buildings with near impunity.
I would imagine the answer is fairly simple: The boys and other victims were not in The Victim Class. They were usually Christian -- which is officially an Oppressor Class and not a Victim Class at all. Thus the media and political establishment blesses Boko Haram through silence, as you can't victimize an Oppressor.
To even discuss such a thing upsets the principle paradigm through which all global events are viewed: Victim Class righteous, besieged, and to be defended at every step; Oppressor Class evil, privileged, and to be attacked at every turn.
To confess that someone in the Victim Class might actually commit oppressive barbarism, or that someone in the Oppressor Class might be himself victimized, is to undermine the hideously-stupid Narrative the political elites and the press (but I repeat myself) have constructed to control the masses.
The one wrinkle is that it is girls now who are being victimized, and girls are part of the official Victim Class, and ergo, the Narrative is not offended by noticing the actual facts of the world.

That's all true, but there's still the problem of the press ignoring other forms of abuse of girls by Islamists in, say, Afghanistan (where dozens of girls' schools have been destroyed by the Taliban).
For whatever reason these girls are special (maybe because they're Black African?)

Why did it take 3 weeks to even acknowledge the crime and 300 missing girls? Where was CNN's breathless up to the half-hour updates of 'no new info' as with the missing Malaysian airliner? As ace's post shows, this targeted slaughter is not new, indeed, has heretofore apparently been of no moment to Preezy Down Low and his fairy band of henchmen.

However, since those doing the butchering were also black, spotlighting the murders could lead to inconvenient lines of questioning. Including discussions of the historic role of African blacks in violently enslaving other African blacks over many centuries, both predating and post-dating the era of European slaving on the continent.
The identity-politics left stuffed that particular topic down the memory hole decades ago and they do NOT want it coming back up again. It is difficult to square up with other aspects of the identity-politics Narrative.

This reminds me of hearing some fool from the NOI a few years back sounding off about how Islam is the natural religion for the black man because *something, something, white devils, slavery, Christians, something, something* Funny how they always ignore the fact that the Muzzies never stopped enslaving blacks in Africa....Reality...how does it work?

=============
Just saw that.
Slavery is a big trade in Africa.
More blacks have been sold northeast than were ever sold west.
I recall a guest host for Limbaugh some 10+ years ago ranting about black "civil rights" leaders cavorting with the leaders of countries that still engaged in the slave trade. Walter Williams, I think it was.

This group has been known terrorists for a long time. But that destroys Hillary's "the world is a safer place now that I am queen" meme.
Nonsense. The world situation is more dangerous on every level and incompetence rules. Now it's coming back to bite her in that big fat lying ass.

Anyone else remember the constant refrain from the left during George W. Bush's presidency about how Bush was ignoring key conflicts where the U.S. should get involved, such as Darfur, in order to instead go "steal oil" from Iraq?
Well, it's six years now since Bush was replaced by Obama.
Who got Darfur sorted out immediately, amirite?
Um, er, no, actually. Darfur is still an unstable violent hellhole, and plenty of innocent lives are still being shattered there on a daily basis.
But for some odd, unaccountable reason, the institutional left in America haven't had anything to say about Darfur since around January of 2009. Just like a switch had been flipped on one day late that month.
It's almost as though -- but we know this can't possibly be true -- the left cynically fasten on these causes abroad to further their domestic political agenda, while actually not caring much if at all about those causes in reality.

Case in point -- Louis Farrakhan and Nation of Islam received funding from Gaddafi and even went to meet with him if I recall correctly.

There is one interesting aspect of theater in this. Ace discussed the various translations of the name Boko Haram, but they're all essentially "Western education (I'll incorporate all of the values of the Englightenment) is sinful".
So this is a pure attack by Ignorance on Civilization. It isn't cloaking itself as anything else. And this ignorance is militantly evil.

It is NOT a US security issue. If we can go in a get some intel, that's fine with me. It always useful to know your enemy, tactics and the battle space.
But this is a combat issue for Nigeria to handle. At best it is the Europeans who have been sucking about 50% of all the oil exports and looking the other way.

They're making a fuss now becuase the public is aware. Can't have it seen by thepublic that they don't care about something that's trending on twitter.
What's hot is their cause. Till it's not

Depends on who is doing the terrorizing. Is it terrorism when, say, the Guatamalan junta in the late 70's, early 80's depopulated whole villages? How about those heaps of corpses outside Guatamala City? How about the murder of missionary priests such as Father Stanley Rother? Three masked men broke into his church in rural Guatamala and, after a brief, brutal fight (Father Rother's knuckles were skinned), shot him dead in the rectory. His crime was showing sympathy for those wives and children you were talking about.
No, terrorism didn't subside. It just changed players, and 'going after wives and children' is an unacceptable way of dealing with it.

Obama/Clinton foreign policy replaced terrorism with "man caused events".
They
also studiously ignored religious persecution against any group other
then Muslims. By courting global Islam, they hoped to show that they
were different than the infidel Bush and that Islamic terrorism would
just melt away.
How has that worked out ? Not very well for
thousands and thousands of Christians. But they are not Americans, so
what difference does it make.
Boko Haram did not fit the 'rose
colored narrative". They are an Islamic terrorist group. Ignore them and
pretend they will go away did not work.
How about the Muslim
Brotherhood in Egypt ? Great Democrats ! ,freedom to worship - only if
your God is Allah. Coptics not so much. Guess what the Egyptians asked
for a mulligan (Barak would understand) and threw out the MB and
replaced it with the military, to protect a religious minority.
Hilary
and Barak have to defend a foreign policy concocted into their own
little make believe world were every one is rational and behaves like
the Ivy league professors think they should.
Unfortunately that
includes dealing Putin, China, Pakistan, North Korea - a bunch of "local
powers" who have nuclear capabilities - oh and about 100 million
Islamic fundamentalists who believe in bombs and verses.
