Why Does Obama Grant Exemptions for Obamacare Left and Right, And Yet Refuses To Do So for Faith Objectors?
— Ace

Via NRO, this sounds exactly right.

How can you diagnose when somebody is suffering from ideological obsession?

Consider the case of the Affordable Care Act. This law was supposed to provide for universal health insurance for all Americans. Yet the law is filled with exemptions, and the Administration has granted even more exceptions and exemptions as the implementation date for the law approached on New YearÂ’s Day.

Here are just a few of the exemptions that were incorporated in the law itself: people who can’t afford coverage, even with a subsidy; people with income levels too low to require filing a federal tax return; members of certain Indian tribes; people who can claim a hardship; people who will have a short gap in their coverage; members of certain religious groups that conscientiously oppose insurance benefit programs (e.g., the Amish); members of a “health care sharing ministry”; people in prison; and people who are not lawfully in the United States.

In the last few months, with all the mess associated with the new health exchange websites, and all the other chaos associated with the law, the Administration has granted new exemptions...

So, what does this have to do with ideology? Well, despite all those other exemptions, waivers and extensions, one group has not been able to obtain an exemption, despite repeatedly asking for it, petitioning for it, and finally suing for it — religious organizations that have a moral objection to facilitating contraception, sterilization, and abortion, as would be required under the so-called HHS Mandate.

For these groups, there is no flexibility at all. There is instead an adamant insistence that they will have to cooperate, regardless of their deeply-held religious beliefs. The Amish get out of the law entirely, but when it comes to Catholic dioceses, schools and charities agencies, the government offers nothing except artificial and unsatisfactory “accommodations”.

....

The government wonÂ’t even grant temporary respite while legal challenges are working their way through the courts. They canÂ’t even bring themselves to give a break to the Little Sisters of the Poor, who spend their entire lives caring for needy elderly people.

Why is this? It’s not that hard to understand. The current Administration is entirely beholden to an ideology of sexual liberationism that considers contraception, sterilization and abortion to be “sacred ground”. They consider this ideology to be so central to life that they will brook no opposition, and will do whatever it takes to bring to heel anyone who opposes them.

That is an ideological obsession. It is dangerous to the souls of those who suffer from it, and it is dangerous to any society in which they wield power.

This reminds me of the suspension of Phil Robertson. It's not about the positions themselves. I think gays and the gay-friendly have the right to argue for greater accommodation of gays, and I think it's just swell if women wish to dwell exclusively on "women's issues," fixating entirely upon reproduction. Back to the Future, you know. The way it used to be.

The problem comes in that you are not even permitted to disagree. You cannot object; you cannot opt-out. The various Leftist Cultural Asks are, apparently, so powerfully certain and true that the government will actually legally punish you for suggesting otherwise.

35 Here's a little bit of irony. In Citizens United, IIANM, they argued that corporations (group associations) are not individuals and shouldn't be accorded the same rights as people. In the case of Obamacare, they seem to be arguing that individuals are not groups, and therefore are not accorded the same exemptions as are given to certain groups (e.g. Amish). Am I wrong?

47 Catholics have a doctrine of sin. You cannot do good while doing evil. The evil pollutes the act throughout. We cannot provide these charitable hospitals or catholic schools if we must commit grave sin to do so. The goal here is to either permanently corrupt the Catholic Church to the relativist doctrine so that they can be controlled in the future, or, drive them from the public square so we are of no consequence.

Among many of the horrific stories he tells, one in particular stands out. He and the other founders of NARAL plotted to make the Catholic church the "designated villain" and mounted a huge PR campaign to a)discredit the church and b) make it seem that all opposition to abortion came from the discredited church. Obviously, it worked. He also talked about pushing fake polls that showed public support for legalized abortion when the reality was exactly opposite. Remember. Leftists lie. It's what they do.

89 Sure, it's an ideological obsession. It's also a realization that traditional Christianity, i.e., Catholicisim, does not acknowledge the supremacy of reason, or the left's version of reason. Catholics think of God and His law as supreme. The Church thus stands in Obama's way.

So it's a point of resistance to the State, regardless of whether they like illegal immigration or contraception. L'etat c'est mois, Obama believes, and he really believes it, or believes it's absolutely necessary to act as if he believes it. Likewise, the family is a focus of resistance, so it must be destroyed too.

Nothing in His universe happens by chance or accident. For every effect there is a cause. And believe me, there are other Christians who love the RCC too even if we are not part of it. I'm one of them Because the RCC is the canary in the coal mine. If they are successfully intimidated ALL others churches that don't bow to Caeasar will follow. That's why I say whatever doctrine might separate us, we have ONE faith, ONE Lord, ONE baptism and as I have noted before to paraphrase Benjamin Frankiln . If we don't hang together we will most assuredly hang separately. And FTR. I understand about calling on the intercession of Saints- that it's not praying to THEM ( Some Protestants tend to misunderstand this) but asking Holy people to go to God. And yes, we can all go directly to Christ too. I ask for the intercession of Saints too because I respect these very holy people.

The window on the genuine atheist movement in this nation was rather narrow and when it was numerous it had its foot in both political camps.

At some point believing there was no divine presence in creation morphed into undermining one Monotheism in particular and empowering the socialist superstate to do it with the activist atheist main body.

119 Accomodating the extremist positions is so entrenched that even those opposing Robertson's suspension and the crushing of dissent that it represented reflexively distanced themselves from him. I say reflexively because while I may be wrong, I don't see a basis for charges like "mean-spirited" made against Robertson (especially when one reads the more of the article.) In doing so, commentators on the right themselves buy into the pretense that between The good and correct occupy the left, and the evil and wrong occupy the right. That if you are not for GLAAD you are with Fred Phelps. Cowering before this power, appearing chastened by it, sends the signal that the left is actually right about what they say.

152 Actually, I think that the government's motivation is more calculated than an ideological fixation. This battle is not about making contraception freely available or socially acceptable. That fight was won long ago, and there is no more political mileage to be had by picking on the Little Sisters of the Poor. Rather, this entire situation appears to be an intentionally contrived show trial.to coerce the Church into publicly violating its own claims of conscience, and to consequently deligitimize it as a moral actor. If and when that is done, there will be no more meddlesome bishops to contend with on abortion, euthanasia, stem cells, etc. The precedent will have been set that on matters of faith and morals, the Catholic Church can and will defer to its government masters. Contraception just happened to be the most convenient vehicle for framing this assault on religious liberty, but it could have just as easily been waged over sex-discriminatory ordinations or a tax on communion wafers.

The reason that they are not is because copies of them have been found to have been published in a magazine in 1958. Long before the Dunham family moved to Hawaii, and when Stanley Ann would have been 15 or 16.

I can get you the links for this information if you really want them.

162 64 Which is to say, Leftists have a less-than-rational attachment to Atheism, verging on the transcendental or romantic. I respect very much people who cannot believe because they cannot believe. It's a rational position and nobody can be put in the position of believing something they don't. But Leftists have this "false consciousness" (a Marxist phrase, I love it) that if the whole world were atheist, it would be a beautiful paradise full of rainbows, lollipops and no "superstition". In fact, we've seen that the wide absence of religion leads to all sorts of bizarre new-age weirdness, violence and sclerotic, rigid political ideologies. You get all the worst aspects of religion -- puritanism, dogma, corruption, moral superiority -- without any of the uplifting aspects. This is because Marxists believe such things are grown by religion rather than are an integral part of human nature.

Indeed.  We are aware of the limitations of state power by word of God and are told to place our moral understanding in the hands of our faith.  The state simply cannot abide one or two.

I cannot believe Barack Obama is "the lightworker" or rather I cannot believe he is "the one" because Jesus is the one.

174 Leftism views religion as Reactionary, and therefore seeks to abolish it. Furthermore, the abolition of religion weakens traditions, traditionalism and the "familial" and ecclesiastical organization of society and its constituent communities, and, therefore a large part/the main part of the natural opposition to Leftism. Once these have been done away with, and even before that process is complete, Leftism can, somewhat ironically, do to corporations what it has done to the lowest classes, infantillizing them and binding them to the centralized State through a series of perverse incentives. Corporations, being inherently amoral and compulsively-opportunistic have no real desire to oppose this process. And, in fact, like the lowest classes, they believe that they are its beneficiaries. Later, all. God bless. :-)

It's their conceit that absent faith in the divine "everyone will think like I do or we'll just vote and then people won't care who wins and loses."

Ace and I have had conversations here in the threads about the concept of "magic thinking" and the majority of mankind's need to believe in "something."

I am far less wary of people who decide "something"  is the Christian God, Buddah, a relatively peaceful Allah etc etc than I am of people who decide "something" is the weaponized superstate or God forbid a politician.

If I avoid the former examples I am out good fellowship and business opportunities and if I can't avoid the latter two I am denied freedom or life.

Not really OT, I'm reading Bill Bryson's book "At Home: A Short History of Private Life" and Bryson wonders at one point why the Britons of Roman England couldn't seem to muster enough spirit to fight off the invaders who took over their country after the collapse of the Roman Empire. The invaders - Angles, Saxons, Jutes ( we don't even know that much about them) didn't come storming into Britain slaughtering people. They were vastly outnumbered by the natives. Their culture was inferior. And yet they obliterated Roman culture as if it had never existed.

Bryson quotes a Brit historian: "It didn't have to involve a lot of slaughter or bloodshed. Probably one day you just looked out on your field and saw there were 20 people camped there and gradually it dawned on you they weren't about to go away and were taking your land from you. There were no doubt some blood clashes here and there, but on the whole I think it was just a matter of the existing peoples learning to adjust to dramatically changed circumstances."

In other words, it was the "new normal."

Bill Whittle has a great commentary on exactly this point yesterday making the point through the concept of social proof -- The overwwhelming social pressure to do what others are doing that causes one to subordinate one's own beliefs in order to avoid standing out.

The left has very deliberately exploited this phenomenon to remove entire subjects from public discussion.  Think marriage is between one unrelated man and one unrelated woman?  Well, you're a bigot.  How do we know?  Because there no one is saying otherwise.  QED.

Basically, there are two competing impulses battling all the time in human events: statism versus individual rights. Comes in various names, but that's about it. In modern times, I think it's French Revolution versus American. We are veering into French territory, which is not good.

205 I have an idea for Ace and all Moron's and 'ette's for 2014: relentlessly mock that evil woman at the State Dept, who makes Psaki and the woman with the weird eyebrow (Nuland) look like angels from Hospice.

Why is this evil witch, Marie Harf,  allowed to mock reporters? She seems to be especially rude to Matt Lee. Why have they not revolted and hurled spitballs at her carefully coordinated jewelry/wardrobe, perfection of hair, and her hipster black glasses? You know she is high-fived after every appearance. Encouraged by the WH to act beeotchy and hostile to reporters actually asking questions of this administration. After all, she is a feminist and has bigger cohones than Baroque. She be one mean pit viper, spewing her venom when the Great One is questioned.

Seriously, she needs to be mocked relentlessly, and y'all do this quite well (Keiff Olberman comes to mind). I cannot believe she gets away with this rudeness to reporters (well, I do believe as every day is bad juju with this gang of thugs). If they complain they are, apparently, being told to shut up or give up their press pass. Otherwise I cannot believe they are just rolling over and playing dead. I cannot even imagine this happening under Condi Rice or even Madeline Albright. I am sure she is a Hillary hire, and Kerry is probably afraid of her, and he likes mean women as well.

I am currently reading, "The Elephant Whisperer" by Lawrence Anthony, a good book. In it, "tagati's" are mentioned, which are proactive evil spirits in Africa. I believe the entire administration are tagati's. The WH will have to be exorcised if we ever have the great day to see them leave whatever is left of that historic home of our country.

I am sorry to go off subject, but, wow, this spokeswoman needs a good mocking to bring her tagati to a head and let her foam at the bully pulpit she creates. Every time I see Harf Harpy, which has been rarely lately, she is meaner. So I know this is applauded and encouraged and she is getting bolder. I fully expect her to grow fangs and start ripping out throats soon.
