UPDATE: I was informed there is a two cheerleader minimum on playoff posts.

Ok. My bad.

6 Not first.

Temperatures here are still in the thirties, although there is intermittent cold rain to prep for the forthcoming snow, and a NW wind to give the announcers something to comment on when the Chargers don't complete a pass. Compared to the Freezer Bowl of 1/82 though, it is downright comfy!

19 I know it's the late game and I'm not a fan of either Green Bay or San Francisco but I'm genuinely aggravated by the fact that 8-7-1 Green Bay gets a home game against 12-4 San Francisco. The argument that Green Bay won their division so they deserve the home game is absurd. What Green Bay "deserves" is a spot in the playoffs. That's it. The better record should determine the home game in the playoffs. This NFL rule is not quite as stupid as the baseball practice of awarding home field in the World Series to the team in the league that won the All-Star game but it's still stupid.

I don't have a problem with teams playing in "Traditional Football Conditions" either as long as the home team deserves the home game by having a better regular season record than their opponent. But I do have problems with the league choosing New York/New Jersey as the location for this year's Super Bowl. I'm really hoping that 18-24 inches of snow falls on MetLife Stadium just before the kickoff. Stupid NFL.

74 Don't forget the wind chill factor that can subtract another 20 degrees or more. Those Cinci and NKy teens who love to run around in shorts/t-shirts in 20 degrees weather might want to rethink their dress for this level of winter weather. In Louisville and Lexington Ky the -4 forecast is -20 to 30 with the wind chill factor. The problem with that sort of weather is the people in the area who are not experienced with preparing and dressing for severe low temperatures.

The practice of awarding home field to the team in the league that won the All-Star game is less stupid than the automatic rotation of even years - NL odd years -AL that they had before. Yeah, logically, the team with the best regular season record should have home field advantage, but what if the W-L records are the same? Coin toss?

Posted by: Donna V. at January 05, 2014 02:01 PM (R3gO3)

Since there are interleague games in baseball, I'd probably have it determined first by head-to-head record during the regular season. But if the teams had the same record against one another or they didn't play against each other in the regular season, perhaps home field could be determined by record against common opponents. If they are still tied, perhaps you base the tiebreaker on run differential (i.e., runs scored vs. runs given up), overall and/or vs. common opponents. If it's still tied after that (which is highly unlikely), THEN perhaps there's a coin toss.

I don't think I can watch it any time soon.

I don't know Marcus.  I do know the men who trained him.  I'm not a SEAL, far from it.  Water makes me itch.

Nonetheless, it's a really really small community.  As I type this I'm wearing a watch Rob Smith wore while pushing hundreds through buds.  I've edited their books.  I've gained and lost friends in the community.

They are a breed apart.  You know early on when you don't have the skills, or size to play in the NFL or NBA.  That's me.  I'm just the nerd in the back room.

But.  We all wore uniforms.  Mikey, Danny and Axe are still my brothers in arms.

I can't see that movie.  Maybe in 5 years or so.

My place is spic and span in the summer because when I have baseball on, I go clean when the other team is at bat. I still listen, but I am spared the sad sight of watching the opposing team score. Doesn't work with football - I have a tougher time visualizing what's going on when I'm just listening to games.

I don't think it's any concidence that baseball was the premiere sport of radio days and football started coming into its' own once everyone owned TVs.

On your computer, there's many schools of thought.  IP masking can be a real bitch for the unwashed.  It's an art.  And one way or the other, your ISP knows who you are.  So random wi-fi is the way to go if  you're seeking to dig holes in the desert.

291 Good grief, I'm a bolt fan but fer cryin out loud we get multiple opportunities to get 7 and have to settle for 3. I wanna kick something!

Cincy needs to start looking for a new QB.  This Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde show of Andy Dalton is crap.

Posted by: buzzion at January 05, 2014 11:42 AM (LI48c)

306 Howdy morons & 'ettes! Out of commission most of yesterday with a migraine, but Imitrex finally knocked it out today. I was going to complain about the officiating in this game, but the Bengals are stepping on their johnsons anyway, so why bother? At least yesterday's games turned out the way I wanted.

Posted by: Y-not at January 05, 2014 11:42 AM (zDsvJ)

307 So, Cincy was supposed to win by 7.

Posted by: buzzion at January 05, 2014 03:42 PM (LI48c)

To be scrupulously fair, Philip Rivers is a bit of a Jekyl and Hyde himself.  Although the good one has been showing up the last couple of weeks.  I personally don't give a shit, but the dadster lives in SD and he's kinda stoked that they advanced to the post season.  Pats are our team, though.

Maybe I am a Norv Turner well not fan but admirer to a degree.  I have been a fan of Air Coryell tree offensive minds my entire football watching days.  Norv is part of the Zampese school as is Martz.

Neither Eli nor his brother have played in a Coryell based system but I think either one could have done well despite the fact they are very different quarterbacks.

It'll be interesting to see if Norv does anything with the Clowns next season assuming he is still around.  They have not been a Coryell style team since Bernie was up there.  The only flaw with  the Coryell school in the modern NFL is that because of the nature of free agency it becomes vital to have QBs of exceptional intelligence and to dumb down the offense a bit.

312 Re 306: So far the officials are not the problem. I was kind of hoping Andy could stop with the mandatory 2 picks per game, but he had to save them for the 4th quarter, after literally dropping the ball on a run play. The sports talks shows are gonna be wanting a red head on a pike.

313 308 Peaches at January 05, 2014 03:46 PM (8lmkt)

I'm a Chargers fan, Rivers is overrated and too confident in his abilities.  This leads him to overreach even when he had a good supporting running game and the strength of the team was in the possession receiving side of the air game.  I'd be thrilled if San Diego went to the big game and won, but I in no way expect it.

Posted by: Sven10077 at January 05, 2014 11:49 AM (TE35l)

Yeah, not seein' that in any possible scenario, Sven.  That said, you just never know!  They are certainly doing better without Turner.

Posted by: Peaches at January 05, 2014 11:51 AM (8lmkt)

317 I think Eli and Archie were more scared off by the organizational part of the team rather than the coaches. Archie had some story about showing up in San Diego before the draft and being shocked how poorly the place was run.

Opie Dalton is quite capable of doing his Dave Klingler impersonation without needing to look north NCJ.

The Bengals are a Bill Walsh WCO originating team they have never strayed too far from trying to recreate Paul Browns' notions....

they make a habit of picking QBs that do not fit their preferences on strategy.

I would have been thrilled for Detroit to get Klingler, or Houston, or Atlanta all teams that ran the system he thrived in at U Houston but alas Mike Brown "got smart"

Posted by: exdem13 at January 05, 2014 11:54 AM (lJaja)

326 312 Re 306: So far the officials are not the problem. ---- They've been bad. The most egregious was that review at the end of the half AFTER Cincy had run a play. They should have at the very least put 12 seconds back on the clock and given us back the down. That would have been enough time to run one pass play to the endzone.
