12 I got to see Colin Kaspernaski play in college.  Heck of a talent in the right system, and a very good short yardage runner almost as good as Cam Newton was in college.  It may be a good game, if San Fran wins Cali teams will have a positive polar post season record for the first time in my memory.

98 I disagree about the bitching over home field advantage. I think if the (currently) strong division teams got home field over a weaker division's winner, you would not have seen the good games in the last couple of weeks of the regular season. There'd be less to play for. I think they should keep it the way it is. I gather they are planning on expanding the number of playoff teams. 120 I'm rooting against Colin Kaepernick because he pulls the race card. Apparently people think certain things about his play because of his race, and he knows this through his capability for mental telepathy. It must be a burden to deal with that while being worshiped and paid millions. Dick.

I didn't even know he wasn't white. I thought "Kaepernick" must come from one of those crazy Balkan countries where people have Hun and Turk blood.

126 I saw the pilot ep for "Fringe" last night, btw. Yeah I know, off topic.

Not terribly impressed. Obvious characters are obvious: the cute female agent who likes the ol' PIV (didn't Futurama already skewer this in "Single Female Lawyer"?), the hardass division chief who is always up in the noble agents' face, the secretive eeevil corporation, the bad guy who is Not What He Seems. It was a cliche-o-rama from start to finish.

343 The idea that American football is a reflection of American life seems more correct than ever. Think about it. In the modern NFL, almost everything is illegal, and you may be penalized at any time for the silliest offenses, yet ignored as you creat total mayhem. Rich athletes simply buy or pay their way out of large offenses on and off the field. There are a lot of drugs, some legal, some not. Diets are controlled and there are many rules even off the playing field. Everything that takes place is scrutinzed by cameras and people "upstairs" make decisions about the fate of the people running around the "field". Bringing too much attention to the Christian faith is an offense. No word on how such demonstrations related to Islam might be handled. And in the end the, the winners are often picked by the whim of enforcement of some law, laws which change every year just to keep everyone unsettled yet controlled.

373 98 I disagree about the bitching over home field advantage. I think if the (currently) strong division teams got home field over a weaker division's winner, you would not have seen the good games in the last couple of weeks of the regular season. There'd be less to play for.

Posted by: Y-not at January 05, 2014 05:05 PM (zDsvJ)

I don't understand the logic. Teams would still want to win to improve their seeding in the playoffs. It would just alter the overall level of importance for different games. Green Bay had to win in the last game to even get into the playoffs so their situation wouldn't have changed. They just shouldn't have been rewarded with home field for earning a playoff berth with an 8-7-1 record and thus being able to host 12-4 San Francisco in today's wild-card round.

The whole process is inconsistent as the teams with the top two records in each conference get a bye in the playoffs so overall record does matter in some instances. Of course, that's screwed up, too, because both teams wouldn't receive a bye if they were from the same division as the team that finished with the second-best record in the division (and conference) would only be the No. 4 seed as all division winners in the conference would be seeded ahead of them. Thus, the team that finished second in the division (and conference) would only be a No. 5 seed despite having a better record than 4 of the other 5 teams from their conference in the playoffs.

I do understand why the NFL uses the division structure but it still results in situations where teams that were more successful over 16 games are being treated unfairly in the playoffs, which are only a maximum of 3-4 games for qualifying teams. That's enough of my bitching, as none of this positively or negatively impacts my favorite team ... at least, this year it doesn't.

376 If nothing else hire the lad to put butts in the seats out of morbid curiosity Jags. *** I disagree with this notion. It does nothing, in itself, to improve the team. It would be a disservice to both the team and to Tebow. However.... I do think that they should have signed him for another reason: Leadership. He brings a strong work ethic and leadership skills and the Jags could use that boost of energy. And, with MJD going on the market, leadership will be lacking further. Unfortunately, management seems short-sighted in that regard.

I've given up trying to predict the NFL playoffs considering that none of the teams that won the Super Bowl the past three years were predicted by most observers to win it at the beginning of the playoffs. I still think it will be one of the two two seeds in each conference, though if SF survives today, they may also have a shot, too.

If it did not actively hurt the team but increased revenue if nothing else they'd have been the better for it.

He reminds me of Jim Jensen a bit, and it is sad that he either cannot or will not improve into a more effective conventional QB.

I am not overly fond of his play(I loathe U of FL) and I think he underestimated how much of his success was because Urban Meyer literally tailored an entire offensive philosophy around his playstyle for him.

He is a decent person from what I have see, and i have no doubt of his desire to win or to encourage winning habits amongst his teammates though.

It simply strikes me as odd the Jags to be polite sucked.  They had cap room, and he would have been an asset if on nothing else special teams.  That is one non-event that blew me away.

Moon and Warner's great quality was the humility to go to lesser venues to sharpen their reading ability and technique while not losing the dream.

Tebow strikes me as a person who refuses to play within himself and I cannot completely winnow out why.

Do note I criticized Phillip Rivers earlier on the same point, and despite my being a huge Cam Newton booster Newton if anything regressed in some ways last year.

If Tebow NEEDS to succeed at QB in the NFL he should learn some Canadian and go north or hit the indoor circuit.

Consistent adherence to a pro style offensive system making proper reads of a defense prior to the snap.

I admit I think they pulled the rug far too quickly, and I also do not think the Jets or Donkos either one hired the right tutors but no matter how brilliant his improvisational skills ARE no team would be comfortable in the modern era relying on a person who is a two-three read QB at best who then defaults to "run"...

His intermediate range accuracy was also found wanting similar to another Gator QB "Sex Cannon."

Hmm, I wouldn't have put him there, personally. Running back maybe better, but it's moot if he doesn't care for it.

463 End of game and we get interrupted by a phone call. One we had to take action on. If someone calls to tell you "something is wrong with a neighbor's house's furnace" what in hell does that mean? The person calling didn't know. She was just relaying the message. Yeah. Broken pipes? Frozen windows? On fire? The "neighbor" is in Florida on holiday for 4 months. The people responsible for keeping an eye on the house are in Mexico for a month. And, we get a call from the woman living in the people responsible, because she took the call as the others are in Mexico. And, I've had too much tequila. heh.

I think they've been for the most part properly humbled by the passage of time from their glory days that will not be an issue until they get a ring again.

Colin Kapernick is a young man and I am certain he may outgrow the chip on the shoulder he felt the need to lean on to justify in his mind his poor play not being the worst thing.

He is in some ways the humblest of the young happy feet QBs that are being given a shot and I think he may develop into a top of the middle 3d bottom of the top 3d QB in 2-3 seasons.

I would have preferred Vermeil stayed but I called the 1st SB season... first when Trent Green was to be the slinger then after really watching Warner in preseason I was allying people's fears Warner would not even equal Green.

It is easy to get spoiled even by near success in the SB pursuit ask an 80s Charger fan.

552 The 9ers last 3 or 4 games have been nail-biters, like this one, decided in the last 2 minutes. They're demonstrating that when the going get tough, they can get things done. Like Frank Gore springing for a 50 yard run late in the game to break Seattle's back, or Kaepernick running on 3rd and 8 today to keep a drive alone, some 49er always seems to step up late in the game to make a play. Condolences to grammie winger and all the rest of you GB fans. Better luck next year.
