I'm not really a huge fan of these pageanty extravaganzish insaney Olympic things, particularly Winter Games (curling? really?), but if you're interested here's a place to discuss.

Anyway the many silly woes of Sochi are all over the news. By the time the last oligarch skims his piece of the action there's hardly enough money to build a bathroom and a lobby.

There are some things about it that are interesting though.

They are from New Zealand I am told. I want them to win.

Oh, Bob Costas may have ignored the warnings about water and washed his face with this stuff.

He'll be lucky to keep the eye. I feel for you on that one Bob, eye troubles suck.

21 As a Canuck, I will say the following about curling: A lot of it is mental. Once you understand what's going on, even if you've never curled in your life you can second-guess the players and try to figure out what they should do instead of what they want to do. Plus the recreational curlers in Canuckistan have a cooler of beer alongside the sheet of ice.

40 The early years of curling seemed heavy on the middle-aged moms. I assume as it gets established younger people and actual athletes will take up the sport. Unless there's some advantage in curling to be menopausal that I'm unaware of.

71 Because I'm a nice person, I'll explain curling in a few paragraphs. For the benefit of the Morons, if you want to hear ladies yelling, "Hard, hurry hard! Quick! Yeah!" you want to look for women's curling in your TV listings. There are 10 ends (rounds). If you're tied at the end of 10, you go into sudden-death OT. Each team has 4 players on the ice, and each gets to curl 2 rocks, for a total of 8 per side. The team with the "last rock", aka. the team that has the last shot, has the "hammer". The sheet of ice has two ends, or "houses". Each has a bunch of rings like an archery target: a red 12-foot ring, a white 8-foot-ring, a blue 4-foot ring, a red inner ring, and the white button. The play alternates back and forth between the ends. The goal of the exercise is to get your rocks closer to the button than the other team. The more of your rocks you get closer to the button before the other team's, the more points you get. That's why you want to sometimes smack rocks around, because you want to get the other team's rocks out of the way. That's it in a nutshell, whether you wanted to read it or not.

111 Beyond the desktop games, I don't know. It was like a Milton Bradley type game with a wooden board you could flick ball bearings or marbles down and you had to do exactly what you described. The balls had some sort of plastic ring around them to keep them from rolling too much, but enough to go down the board and bump other balls out of the way.

NBC has just become utterly useless. Over the last several Olympics, to attract more female viewers, they have increasingly emphasized the personal stories and spent more air time on fluff and background than on covering actual competitions. They aren't really even putting on a sports program anymore.

The coverage certainly isn't good enough to make me sit through an idiot praising a commie to see it.
