Posted by: Right Said Fred Astaire at April 12, 2014 04:47 PM (BAS5M)

13 I adore Fred Astaire. My favorite dance partner for Astaire is no one. I think he is at his most brilliant when he dances solo. Even when he's dancing with a female partner, I find myself rarely looking at her. My eyes are always on him. I also love his voice. Apparently he didn't think much of his singing ability. I think it's grand.

Posted by: Y-not hasn't read the comments at April 12, 2014 04:49 PM (zDsvJ)

17 Cyd Charisse was a sublime dancer, but this brings up a line I really always hated by C. Paglia or someone like that to the effect that "Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, but in high-heels and backwards", which is crap. For one thing, watch one of their routines, he literally danced circles around her, probably 2-3x the number of steps she did, plus her's were often "dumbed down" for the sections she had to do, but the stupid-ass line lives on and jezebel-types believe and repeat it.

Okay, I need to Horde-source something.  A guy we were talking to today is interested in Japanese smithing, specifically of samurai blades, but has a hard time finding GOOD information.  (I mean, even I knew more than he did, and gods know how *little* I know.)

Do any of you Morons out there know any good websites  I could point him to?  We see him every week or so, so I'll make notes and pass the info along.

39 Thank you for posting that clip, NDH. I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed it. It reminded me that at one time, we did have class in this country. One could go to the movies with a date and not leave nauseous, terrorized, or embarrassed at the nudity/sex scenes. I have a friend who regularly attends a classic movie event that is shown at her local...library...once a week. I've gone with her on a couple of occasions and found myself truly enjoying the film, including the more obscure ones. I recommend renting the classics or better yet, finding an independent theater that shows the oldies....it will be a fun evening.

We see him every week or so, so I'll make notes and pass the info along Off-hand: The book The Craft of the Japanese Sword by Leon and Hirkoko Kapp and Yoshindo Yoshihara. websites: Swordforum International (swordforum. com) and bladeforums.com - lots of good smiths to ask questions of. Get the book first, though, to get the basic techniques and vocabulary straight, so he can ask half-way intelligent questions. Swordsmithing is very difficult - if he hasn't done any blacksmithing he needs to get good at that first. Knives are a good starting point, but he will need to learn welding as well.

110 Nice, NDH. There are so many different styles of dance that are great in their own way. I like a lot of the hip-hop dancing stuff. It can be really cool, e.g., stuff I've seen of clips of So You Think You Can Dance. There are so many dance styles to enjoy without having the dancers act like strippers. Sigh.

The majority of the choral pieces have 8 parts - 2 sets of SATB, and he also composed scores for about a dozen instruments. Beautiful genius. They just don't do it like that any more.

Posted by: thunderb at April 12, 2014 09:35 PM (zOTsN)

There is a bit at about the middle of this clip that is very intimate. Astaire almost but doesn't quite touch Charisse. Very classy.

Posted by: Retread at April 12, 2014 05:50 PM (cHwk5)

133 Fred Astaire may have been the greatest dancer, ever.  Sometimes I would swear he is actually floating.  Gene Kelly runs a close #2...his style is more athletic but impressive for the iron control of every step.  Astaire was taller but skinnier, so he had less mass to manage in his maneuvers, which given the rigors of kinetic energy, gave him a big advantage.  Still doesn't detract from his brilliance overall.  BTW, I dance like Charles Bronson (i.e. not at all), so my analysis is purely academic and not professional.

For #3, I would nominate Donald O'Connor.  He could keep up with Gene Kelly (see: Singin' in the Rain).  Underrated overall.

Ray Bolger was also good.

139 It should be easier to step backwards in heels than it appears, as the stabler forefoot comes into contact with the floor first, not leading with the wobbly heel. After you become accustomed to the motion, ice skating backwards is inherently more stable from the use of the forefoot.

Ginger Rogers wasn't really a ginger...she was blonde.

But then, the Ginger Root itself is yellow...well, yellow-ish...more yellow than reddish.

Which is why some people think that the term 'ginger' refers to blonde hair, rather than red hair.

160 To the idiots talking about ginger rogers: Cyd Charisse was a sublime dancer, but this brings up a line I really always hated by C.

Did anyone else notice that the dance itself was photographed in three shots - all medium-distance, showing both dancers? No tricky camera-work, or jump cuts between close-ups and distance shots, or any of that hooey: just turn the camera on and record the masters at work. It's a beautiful thing.

166 Richard Simmons is actually a genius. He completely threw away his ego to make money. No one is that freaking gay. He's flaming as hard as he can to distract derision from his target audience of the morbidly obese. He makes the morbidly obese feel better about themselves by providing the comparison of the persona he projects. Genius!

167 Posted by: docweasel at April 12, 2014 08:49 PM (gW7Y2) I agree. There is no comparison between Astaire and Rogers. She brought the glamor flash, but he was the real talent; and most dancers recognize the difference. Charisse's technique is superior as well; but Rogers had that Hollywood star quality or "the look" of the day. NDH. Thank you! I love watching the old masters dance. They had a level of effortless control which no one seems to match. Lexington still has an institution called "Mrs. Hall's School of Dancing or Halls.. " considered the bane of the city's young men for over seventy years. Some of more antiquated traditions of my grandmothers day died out - such as the bowing to girls; but what remains to this day are generations of kids learning to walz, fox trot and ballroom dance. And when the guy knows how to dance; it is a wonderful experience.
