CVS To Stop Selling Tobacco Products

CVS announced that it will stop selling tobacco products in all of its stores by October of this year.

CVS, the nation's second largest pharmacy chain, said Wednesday that it would stop selling all cigarettes and tobacco products nationwide by October, saying they have no place in a drugstore company that is trying to become more of a health-care provider.

For CVS, the move will be costly. The drugstore chain estimates it will lose $2 billion in annual revenue from tobacco and other sundries as a result, which amounts to about six to nine cents a share this year and about 17 cents annually from next year on. CVS, with annual revenue of more than $123 billion, projects its 2014 earnings will be $4.36 to $4.50 a share.

They are a private company (publicly traded) and entitled to make whatever business decision they see fit. While I never discourage personal boycotts, I think an organized one would be silly. Many people support Hobby Lobby's right to not provide abortion coverage to employees on moral grounds. The same should be true for a company like CVS.

16 It's a dumb move, do you really think a surge of business is going to come in through the door because a pharmacy no longer sells tobacco?  The drug stores here carry liquor, I never gave it a second thought that somehow a pharmacy must be all health products.

Some crusading liberal at the company made this call and will never have to answer to the billions lost in revenue.  And do you really think a single person will quit smoking over this?

I find it strikingly odd that the preznit had a written statement ready for release shortly after CVS's announcement.

 

What evs' as I quit years ago. Its a personal choice but a goverment sanctioned drug like alcohol. As an ex-smoker I see the folly in smoking but will not fault those that choose to smoke unlike the nazis that want to ban anything they think is bad for you.

NYS took away their right to sell brand name smokes tax-free, a couple of years ago. Now they can only sell Indian-made smokes tax-free. You can buy tons of stuff tax-free on Reservations. I buy everything I can on The Rez. I enjoy starving the Beast and sticking it to The Man.

48 Ultimately, less smoking is a good thing. Period. Kudos to CVS for this decision. That said, I'm pretty sure you can buy junk food at CVS. Same with alcohol, at least in my state. It seems their concern for their customer's health only extends to most socially unacceptable way of killing yourself slowly.

They could've killed my newborn son with a faulty prescription that was incorrectly mixed so that it was 6X the specified strength. Luckily we ran it by the NICU nurse and she freaked out. Will never get drugs from them.

Its all about the convience of shopping.   I go to the drugstores  when I don't want to have the hassle  you  have at a Walmart,  ie; parking , checkout.

I think Walgreens does now.  Tricare utilizes Express Scripts as their PBM and Walgreens has resolved their contract dispute with Express Scripts.

Management and the board have fiduciary duties to the shareholders. Dumping $2b in revenue seems like possibly a breach owed to shareholders. 79 They can make the decision not to carry them, but I wonder why they're doing so other than a PR bump or the costs of keeping clerks with the proper clearances working the register. The three things that virtually guarantee a lot of business to most stores are sales of alcohol, tobacco, and/or lottery tickets. Most stores wouldn't give up those clearances without a fight.

80 Not bothered about this really. (Full disclosure: never smoked anything in my life.) Cigs are bad for health, and CVS's rationale makes sense, and this is their personal decision. People can always buy their cigs elsewhere, and as mentioned, CVS will probably lose a lot of revenue from this move. So, whatevs.

88 FWIW, I don't suspect a boycott of sorts. What I do expect is people simply to stop going there because it's more convenient to go somewhere else and get everything in one stop. I never got boycotts based on policy, however 100s of thousands (millions?) of simultaneous economic decisions can be worse than a single boycott.

I very rarely frequent either of them. Since I don't buy cigarettes, I didn't really make a mental note that they sell or don't sell cigarettes, the odd times I've been in one of their stores.

This is exactly what Michelle Obama has been doing with restaurants and food manufacturers - strong-arming them into changing their offerings or discontinuing those she doesn't like (like the extra large candy bars sold by Mars). Miami is generally thought to be a terrible sports market. Miami is one of the poorest big cities with low average income and stifling humidity. Miami already had an MLS team once. 110 Interesting tidbit about CVS. My MD emailed Rx to them for me, of which both MD and I agreed I could fill or not fill(Cholesterol meds). I chose not to fill, work on weight loss, more exercise instead, with her blessing. CVS sent me written formal letters describing my meds, how they were to be taken, what they were for, etc. Sent me a second letter a couple of weeks later chastising me for not getting filled, describing the horrible things that were going to happen to me by not taking said meds and cc'ing my MD that I hadn't gotten the Rx. filled. My insurance REQUIRES that I get Rx filled at CVS if I want them covered by my Rx. coverage. I cannot choose another pharmacy. CVS is right up the HHS ass. That is why the Prezy had a note ready....collusion.

The question isn't if a company *can* do such a thing.  The question is if it *should*.  Do I want a multi-million dollar corporation making decisions based on what it thinks I should see, or say, or believe, or do?  Not really. 

 

Tobacco is a legal product.  It is legal to own, to sell, and to enjoy.  I for one don't care for a corporation telling me they are going to stop selling a legal product that I made an adult decision to enjoy out of some concern for my  health  or to do it for my own good.

172 Soccer and MLS aren't the same thing. Mexican immigrants tend to watch and follow their favorite Liga MX teams from back home. Teams which are richer and have better talent than MLS teams. As MLS grows it will likely get richer than Liga MX at some point. That's actually the big fight now -- MLS and Liga MX fighting for the attention of 2nd and 3rd gen Mexican immigrants. MLS has no hope for 1st gen. But hope to get the sons and grandsons. Attendance wise MLS is doing good in Houston, but it's doing great in Seattle. Given the wealth of America, I expect MLS to eventually surpass Liga MX. At some point MLS teams will be able to hire away the top Mexican stars - well, at least the ones who don't go to Europe. Of course, attendance is always a poor measure. The best measure is revenue since that captures all the ways a team can monetize fan interest and attention. And Houston is doing well, relative to the rest of MLS. Seattle is just far ahead.

Meh - the discount Smoke Shops were already cutting them off at the ankles when it comes to tobacco sales anyway, so...big whoop...

Personally, I stopped buying much of anything from any "drug" store (they're just about all discount-sundries stores that...oh, yeah...happen to sell most of what your health insurance "provider" will let your doctor [sometimes] prescribe for you) back when the local CVS (as well as all the other chain "drug" stores) became larger than most used-car lots, started pushing mostly their own store brands and put in drive-thru prescription lanes. I nearly always buy both prescription and over-the-counter drugs from Costco, except for late-night or Sunday emergencies - better selection, better prices, and I get 90-day supplies of prescriptions that I use all the time.

Iwill NEVER go to a Walgreens, ever again, unless TRULY desperate - they "stiffed" me once too often, on a flu shot  early last year, AND refused to refill one of my all-the-time 'scripts on an interim basis at the same time on a totally b***s**t "reason".

After 35 years and spending God knows how many thousands of dollars, I'm happy I was able to quit smoking last year using e cigs. I even want those after 3 weeks.

If you lose 5-10% of your customer base, that's going to be a MUCH bigger number.  You're talking tens of billions.  And at least around here, CVS and Walgreens are always a stone's throw away.

I see less smokers shopping at CVS than more customers coming in because they no longer sell cigarettes.

And yes, this whole deal stinks of some backroom government handout coming in the near future.

The clerk said, I don't know what those are haha, (because democrats forced a name change a couple years ago) which immediately pissed me off, having just woke up. 269 Yeah, I don't know the specifics in Houston. It is doing well. I suspect that is more due to upper-middle class suburban whites than poorer Mexican immigrants. The Great Recession crushed hispanic net worth and earnings, while upper-middle class whites were mostly unaffected. I would expect the Houston Dynamo to do what most businesses do and go where the money is. But I'd need to see their internal docs to see what's really going on.

That mindset baffles me, but it's Europe, so. Unless the continent has changed much since I was last there, I remember smoking being EVERYWHERE. The main trains all allowed smoking, and the non smoking sections in trains were just as smoky as the regular smoky ones. Everyone smoked everywhere. I'm allergic to all forms of smoke so I came back sounding like I had Tuberculosis or black lung and was about to die. Unless that attitude has changed, I don't see why kids will be corrupted by e-cigs but not by the daily practice of almost every European parent on the continent.

But then they came out with two products that were game-changing moneymakers for them: iTunes, and the iPhone. Suddenly they were the world's largest music retailer, and the world's most profitable cell-phone company. So what'd they do? They dropped "Computer" from their company name a few years ago, and now they're just "Apple." And their main focus now is music, phones, and mobile devices. I bet within 20 years they'll stop selling personal computers completely. And I bet that within just a few years, CVS will drop most remaining non-health products. Companies evolve. CVS is evolving. Why make a trip to CVS if you can get your prescriptions filled at the Sav-On or other drug stores inside the supermarket? 365 I don't believe that CVS is doing this in order to be a better - healthful organization. I believe they have been losing tobacco revenue for some time to the "discount tobacco" stores. Within 1 mile of my nearest CVS are four discount tobacco stores plus several gas stations. Buying cigs at CVS is expensive and people are just not doing it. Hence they stop selling them and make a big announcement that makes PR sense to someone. I also think the stores are independently managed. Probably many store owners wanted to stop and use the shelf space for something more profitable, like condoms or Yodels.

368 I used to go to CVS because I though their toiletries were cheaper than Vons, yeah not so much anymore. I see a lot of stuff like that being cheaper at a grocery store nowadays. Sounds like they are trying to go walmart and add clinics. The CVS's I remember in DC weren't really big enough for that, as far as I could tell, but I think these little mini clinics are a great thing in general.

(PS-- this isn't a "moral" decision for CVS -- it's a business decision that is pandering to those whom they hope to have as their customers). I'm already boycotting CVS anyway -- I received crap service from them so I moved my prescriptions (and my business) to one of their competitors a year ago. However, even though I don't smoke, it seems like a stupid business decision and if I want boycotting already, I would boycott them now just on the bases that a bunch of pandering fools are obviously in charge of the company.

Or Coca-cola products. Or whatever. Yes, they have a fiduciary responsibility to their stockholders, but that doesn't mean they're required to sell... anything, really. "Past performance is not an indicator of future gains" and all that stuff. If a publicly traded company decides that selling a specific product is not in line with its corporate goals (which includes corporate image stuff), they can stop selling even if there's some hit to the bottom line.

There was an article in one of the NYC tabs a few months back that covered a state survey of cigarette purchases.  The survey was done by pulling empty packs out of the city's street trash cans and checking the tax stamps.  IIRC, 50% of the packs were from out of state, with New Hampshire leading the way for imported smokes.

If WalMart opened up their part-time employee health plan to customers (they would have to join some sort of "buying club") it might destroy the exchanges.  Its far cheaper, covers more, with less deductibles, and WalMart could market and administer it right at the cash register.
