— Open Blogger CVS announced that it will stop selling tobacco products in all of its stores by October of this year.
CVS, the nation's second largest pharmacy chain, said Wednesday that it would stop selling all cigarettes and tobacco products nationwide by October, saying they have no place in a drugstore company that is trying to become more of a health-care provider.
(....)
For CVS, the move will be costly. The drugstore chain estimates it will lose $2 billion in annual revenue from tobacco and other sundries as a result, which amounts to about six to nine cents a share this year and about 17 cents annually from next year on. CVS, with annual revenue of more than $123 billion, projects its 2014 earnings will be $4.36 to $4.50 a share.
They are a private company (publicly traded) and entitled to make whatever business decision they see fit. While I never discourage personal boycotts, I think an organized one would be silly. Many people support Hobby Lobby's right to not provide abortion coverage to employees on moral grounds. The same should be true for a company like CVS.

Some crusading liberal at the company made this call and will never have to answer to the billions lost in revenue. And do you really think a single person will quit smoking over this?

I'm sure we'll see other national chains follow suit. Wonder who is pressuring them behind the scenes.

What evs' as I quit years ago. Its a personal choice but a goverment sanctioned drug like alcohol. As an ex-smoker I see the folly in smoking but will not fault those that choose to smoke unlike the nazis that want to ban anything they think is bad for you.

This is exactly what Michelle Obama has been doing with restaurants and food manufacturers - strong-arming them into changing their offerings or discontinuing those she doesn't like (like the extra large candy bars sold by Mars). They get a little something in return (ex: Obamacare waiver) and the consumer gets shafted.

Overall 30% of MLS fans are Hispanic. Given that nationally they make up 15% of the population, it's foolish to say MLS doesn't attract non-whites.

It has a niche fan base of rich, big city whites. It's not poor Mexican immigrants that have boosted MLS. Soccer became a kinda cool cultural affectation among wealthy urban whites. It's really boomed in Seattle and Portland, two of the whitest (and least black or hispanic) cities in America.

I approach this the same way I approached the A and E suspension of that Duck Dynasty guy.
The question isn't if a company *can* do such a thing. The question is if it *should*. Do I want a multi-million dollar corporation making decisions based on what it thinks I should see, or say, or believe, or do? Not really.
Tobacco is a legal product. It is legal to own, to sell, and to enjoy. I for one don't care for a corporation telling me they are going to stop selling a legal product that I made an adult decision to enjoy out of some concern for my health or to do it for my own good.

I agree, BenK. But if you are going to, as a private company, conspicuously look down your nose at one addictive substance, why stop there? They should just remove all snacks, caffeinated products, etc. For the children!
And in most states cigarette taxes fund education. Why does CVS hate the children?

Meh - the discount Smoke Shops were already cutting them off at the ankles when it comes to tobacco sales anyway, so...big whoop...
Personally, I stopped buying much of anything from any "drug" store (they're just about all discount-sundries stores that...oh, yeah...happen to sell most of what your health insurance "provider" will let your doctor [sometimes] prescribe for you) back when the local CVS (as well as all the other chain "drug" stores) became larger than most used-car lots, started pushing mostly their own store brands and put in drive-thru prescription lanes. I nearly always buy both prescription and over-the-counter drugs from Costco, except for late-night or Sunday emergencies - better selection, better prices, and I get 90-day supplies of prescriptions that I use all the time.
Iwill NEVER go to a Walgreens, ever again, unless TRULY desperate - they "stiffed" me once too often, on a flu shot early last year, AND refused to refill one of my all-the-time 'scripts on an interim basis at the same time on a totally b***s**t "reason".

My Obamacare policy is a Blue Cross/Blue Shield (Independence BC) policy and I wouldn't be surprised if they've agreed to limit all their RX plans to CVS. Wouldn't be surprised to find the other companies did the same. I now buy all my OTC items at Rite Aid & Walgreens on purpose.

I would bet there's something to that.
Either their minds can't handle logic, they overload, and they tune out because they're too stupid to handle facts and logic. Or....their minds can handle facts and logic, and when they encounter it over any given issue they feel stupid for not having figured it out on their own. So they're embarrassed, and then they tune out.
Either way, we're dealing with the 60th percentile.

If you lose 5-10% of your customer base, that's going to be a MUCH bigger number. You're talking tens of billions. And at least around here, CVS and Walgreens are always a stone's throw away.
I see less smokers shopping at CVS than more customers coming in because they no longer sell cigarettes.
And yes, this whole deal stinks of some backroom government handout coming in the near future.
I think a private company should of course be allowed to make this call, but the nanny staters will never be satisfied. Your vice will be next.

That mindset baffles me, but it's Europe, so. Unless the continent has changed much since I was last there, I remember smoking being EVERYWHERE. The main trains all allowed smoking, and the non smoking sections in trains were just as smoky as the regular smoky ones. Everyone smoked everywhere. I'm allergic to all forms of smoke so I came back sounding like I had Tuberculosis or black lung and was about to die. Unless that attitude has changed, I don't see why kids will be corrupted by e-cigs but not by the daily practice of almost every European parent on the continent.

The point was that it is not solely the Board's prerogative. Whether a challenge would be successful is immaterial. The fact is that shareholders would likely have standing, and if so, that is another avenue to voice displeasure with this suspicious decision. Voting or selling/shorting stock is another.

Could swear I read somewhere once that public companies were bound by SEC regs to protect the stock value and profits as best they can. But I suppose they have ran this past their lawyers already.
------------
Yeah, but with this Administration enforcing those SEC regs, well, I doubt CVS has much to worry about in terms of fiduciary responsibility.

We don't have CVS here and I dont' smoke, so I can't say I really care. I do wonder what their shareholders think, if they are publicly traded.
Sounds like they are trying to go walmart and add clinics. The CVS's I remember in DC weren't really big enough for that, as far as I could tell, but I think these little mini clinics are a great thing in general.

It’s official … X gonna give it to George Zimmerman – TMZ has learned, rapper DMX has just been named Zimmerman’s opponent in his upcoming celebrity boxing match.
Celebrity boxing promoter Damon Feldman tells us, DMX was selected out of 15,000 applicants Â… all of whom wanted a piece of Zimmerman in the ring after he issued the open challenge to fight anyone willing to take him.
But no one wanted to beat ZimmermanÂ’s ass more than DMX.

It's the idea that you're enjoying something that your betters don't think you should be enjoying.
True story...I was once outside of a DC Metrorail stop waiting for someone when I thought I'd do a social experiment. I put an unlit cigar in my mouth...yes, unlit.
In the space of about 15 minutes about 30 people walked by and made those obnoxious passive-aggressive fake coughs. To an unlit cigar.
QED.

There was an article in one of the NYC tabs a few months back that covered a state survey of cigarette purchases. The survey was done by pulling empty packs out of the city's street trash cans and checking the tax stamps. IIRC, 50% of the packs were from out of state, with New Hampshire leading the way for imported smokes.

The heroin he bought was laced with opiates, which in combo are pretty deadly, apparently. I read that there has been an increase in heroin related deaths connected to bad batches being sold, across the east coast. I wonder if this is just a high profile straw breaking the camel's back, forcing them to crack down since is now on ppls radar. No one in LIV land cares about junkies dying until one turns out to be a celeb.

If WalMart opened up their part-time employee health plan to customers (they would have to join some sort of "buying club") it might destroy the exchanges. Its far cheaper, covers more, with less deductibles, and WalMart could market and administer it right at the cash register.
Anyone want to guess who would do it better HHS or WalMart?

Naw, it's for the revenue. Sales revenue for Big Tobacco, and, most importantly, tax revenue for Big Government. Every single person sucking on an e-cig, would, if e-cigs were unavailable, be sucking on a cigarette, or maybe chewing snuff. The unholy alliance of Big Tobacco and Big Government sees a lot of revenue slipping out of their hands, and they are NOT happy about it.

Presumably, sealed cans of cigarette tobacco, and rolling papers would keep a long time. Some tobacco seeds would also be good for the burning times cache, Take up little space, and if circumstances enabled you to grow them, you'd have a cash crop.
