He plays a lot with the Bottle Rockets these days. He's lost a lot of his hair and looks kind of old and cranky, which was never supposed to happen (for him or me). If you get a chance you should try and find a site that has a lot of his downloaded concerts because he's a great live performer and plays a lot of covers (Don't Fear the Reaper, Heading for Disaster by Molly Hatchet, Walk Away Renee and Knowing Me Knowing You by ABBA among others) and has some hilarious between song conversations.

The Elvis Costello comparison is a good one because both have great pop instincts. Crenshaw really deserved to make it bigger compared to some of the mutts who went platinum but life's not fair.

101 Qdpsteve, yeah - they were way ahead of their time, but Gaucho is probably my all-time favorite album. Of course, early ZZ Top is always an option. Deguelo is probably "the one." If you're a serious blues fan, look for Melvin Taylor (he's out of Chicago - a serious SRV feel). Can't think of any album names off the top of my head... maybe a self-titled joint? I think maybe it was MT & the Slack Band?

Before Richard Thompson, the rock performers I saw most frequently was Little Feat. The last time I saw them was the tour after Waiting for Columbus; I had previously had a pretty bad concussion playing basketball and it was the first social thing I did and it was great for getting me back in the swing of things. Lowell George was as big as a fucking house, though, and it was no surprise that his ticker gave out shortly thereafter. Just a great great live group.

Thompson is a great song writer and singer but his guitar playing, especially on the Fender, is just drop dead incredible. He has a website where he sells some of his old concert recordings that you should check out (do a google and you'll find it easy). I saw him and his band play on Halloween at a small club in the 90s and it's in my top ten events evarrrr. I've seen him solo a few times, which were amazing experiences also, but catching him with a band is really primo for my tastes.

Yesterday was so warm in NE Ohio that it was "pull the muscle car ragtops out of storage and air 'em out" day. Down the street was a nice 442 but the wildest one I saw was some tricked out Goat that had that royal metallic blue that GM had in the late 60s with a shine so deep it could've made Turtle Wax an endangered specie. I have no idea how big the rims were the brother had packed on but he could've straddled a medium sized dog and not heard a thump. I don't know if he was running a stock 389 or if he dropped a bigger block in it; all I know is that when he punched it with that high center of gravity that fucker jumped and got the hell out quick.

Before Richard Thompson, the rock performers I saw most frequently was Little Feat. The last time I saw them was the tour after Waiting for Columbus; I had previously had a pretty bad concussion playing basketball and it was the first social thing I did and it was great for getting me back in the swing of things. Lowell George was as big as a fucking house, though, and it was no surprise that his ticker gave out shortly thereafter. Just a great great live group.

I think their problem was that they came around when grunge and rap got huge, so they got lost in the shuffle. Now, Darius Rucker is one of the big names in country music.

Around the SF Bay Area, there was about a twenty year period where the high school hot rod set all suddenly become "import tuners". American V8s were replaced by Honda fours.

Mind you, a Honda can go pretty damn fast. It can also handle and stop nicely. And they can even sound pretty cool. I hear turboed rice rockets blipping the throttle at stoplights hard enough to get the waste gate to open.

Weirdly enough, it seems like the hip thing now is to resurrect Sixties USA.

I saw a big old Mopar being worked on with the hood up and went over to say hello. I expected for gray hair to come out from underneath. Nope. The kid who owned it must have been born in the middle Nineties. The car was a quarter century older than he was.

What kills me is that this movement will die out for lack of affordable parts. The yards emptied out a long time ago. And the firms which make up Government Motors want nothing to do with vehicles that they built generations back. They've fobbed off the remaining old-stock spares inventory already for scrap cash.

306 On long drives, I listen to talk radio late at night. Got to meet Art Bell once upon a time. He is a diminutive man with an attractive voice. We found ourselves on a cruise to Alaska, both our families. This was after Ramona had passed and Art was already proliferating with wife number 2. I wished them well. Art is an entertainer, first and foremost. He knows well over half the stuff he broadcasts could be BS. I think he is starting up again with his own show. He is a guy started with just about nothing and did pretty well for himself, right there in Pahrumph, NV.

These are not "Desert Island Discs" or "Favorite Albums" -- these are albums that (1) can stand above road noise, (2) move you down the highway while not distracting you from safety issues on the road, (3) help you forget about the rude assholes who somehow flunked driver-training 32 times but, yet, are out on the road with you, and (4) can maybe be repeated so you don't have to pull over and fuck around with the stereo.

Who's next has been mentioned several times, but I think Who Are You is better with these criteria.

Unfortunately, the stuff that is getting hard to find are the hard-metal, cast-iron things that don't replicate well on a 3D printer just yet.

There was an era when you could walk through junkyards and buy good old Yankee-ingenuity motors for pennies on the dollar. I cannot recall the last time I saw a golden era engine worth buying. They're all made over into rebar and razor blades now. Or have been rode hard and put away wet by the time the car ends up on a yard. Not worth trying to salvage much.

Some of those motors weren't worth writing home about -- lazy engineers throwing raw displacement at the performance problem -- but some were priceless technological artifacts with irreplacable component level innovations.

So, the deal is, I went to the University of Casual Sun Bathing, and one of the people I met there was an AV tech who (many years later) had three children for whom the BH and I are godparents. Anyhoo, this AV tech was doing a deal for a campus group to show the "Stop Making Sense" movie in the largest hall on campus, 900 seats. And the movie started, and she thought "this was pretty good", so she turned it up. And it started hitting on all cylinders, so she turned it up. And it started really groovin', so she turned it up. And it started turning into the most awesome thing ever.....and she blew up the sound system in Campbell Hall.

Stop Making Sense is all about taking hardware to extremes.

Got a power problem and I'm baffled by the newfangled fuse box. With the old fuses it was easy peasy, but this new thing isn't helping. Got partial power. Half the house is ok. All the lights are ok. But, the wall switches are all dead in one half of the house. Don't know about the stove and hw heater yet, I think they're on their own thing. All the fuses switches are "on", Master and all the subs. However I can't remove the breakers to check the fuse wire like the old ones. The whole thing is integrated and the subs won't budge from the box. They're all plastic components without a seperate switch and breaker. If a fuse has blown, shouldn't the switch flip to off?

First thing that comes to mind is that power is standard Hot+, Hot-, and Neutral. If you want 220V, you do Hot+ and Hot-, but if you want 110V, you go Hot+ and neutral or Hot- and neutral.

And the after-market provides reproduction parts for other popular makes. First-generation Mustang or Camaro? You can practically build a whole new car from brand new repop parts.

The AMC guys really got shafted. When Renault/Chrysler bought American Motors, they called back all the Rambler parts from the dealerships and crushed them.

I got a nasty feeling that the internal wiring has gone splat in part of the house (is that possible? or would it all go?) It's a really old terrace house with typical ground rising damp. I was thinking It looks like a typical blown fuse, but, the fuse box looks alien to me. Every power problem I've had before could be fixed by changing the fuse (or hitting something with a hammer). I'm on 240V... does that make a diff?

The three wire connections from the utility are H+, H-, and N. In your fuse/breaker box, these are attached to H+, H-, and N bars. Each breaker/fuse is a takeoff from those bars -- if it's a 220 circuit, it's H+ and H-....but if it's a 110V circuit then it's either H+ or H- and N.

Can't open the box, nor remove any of the actual fuse/switches. It's a plastic sealed box that doesn't want to open and the fuses, though they have a slight wiggle to them, won't budge either. I'd have to stick a screwdriver in to jimmy them out... if they will actually come out at all. Not inclined to stick the screwdriver in. Must be losing my "fuck it" factor.

620 618 - otho Believe it or not, you just narrowed down the problem a lot. Answer my #615, but I think you just have a bad fuse or tripped breaker. It is not uncommon for two or three rooms to be on the same circuit - even in brand new homes. Older homes? Sure - could be one circuit controlling half a houses' outlets. Do you have a dryer? Go test it. If it both spins AND heats, your box / panel is ok.

621 A circuit breaker panel will have three leads in it. A hot, a neutral and a ground. All incoming hots are 110v in a normal residential house. You double the 110v hots to get to 220v and there is a ground. If one thinks like it is plumbing. The 110v in is water pressure from the city. The neutral is the drain and the ground is a floor drain to take care of overflow.

Nope. The meter above, single box underneath, outside. It's a type I've never dealt with before. Every time something's gone out, just had to flip the switch back to "on" with prior partial ottages. But, everything's "on", according to the box.

They're rectangular box things about 2 inches by half an inch. The switch is on the individual boxes. No seperate breakers (like the old ceramic ones). The switches are marked...

631 Too much info coming in at once... If you have "switches" in that "fuse box" otho, try turning the one that controls that circuit ALL THE WAY OFF, then back on. Seriously - look for one (maybe with a 20 on the end) that might n halfway off. Turn it to th off position before switching it back "on." and sorry Dendritic, but no - the three wires coming into your home are HOT, HOT, NEUTRAL. The ground comes from, well, the ground. Simple version - 110 + 110 = 220 (the two hot legs).

639 If you have "switches" in that "fuse box" otho, try turning the one that controls that circuit ALL THE WAY OFF, then back on. Seriously - look for one (maybe with a 20 on the end) that might n halfway off. Turn it to th off position before switching it back "on."

643 I had a similar problem once, but I have a "modular home" (which is a fancy way of saying "double wide trailer what never had wheels on it"). Turns out each section of the house has a big plug underneath at the joint and one of them had gone bad. The electrician came in and took all the connectors out and permanently wired everything together, that fixed the problem.

If you want, I'll give you my email, & hell, even my phone #. Say the word. Down under stuff is something I've never messed with, but you're still on a simple 220v system. a quick google search tells me that it's common for outlets to be controlled by a switch... if a switch is bad, or if one of the outlets is bad, it can be a pain to find which one, but easy to fix. And yes, it will be expensive for a pro to come diagnose & repair. I am more than happy to help a moron if I can.

But one thing I WON'T do, just on principle, if try to fix electrical problems. Even if I think I understand the issue and all the details involved. Even if I think it's totally safe. Why not? Because electrical problems are just about the only thing in your house that if, they go wrong, can actually kill you. I'll replace a bulb. I'll even replace a blown fuse IF and ONLY if it easily unscrews with hand pressure (two layers of rubber gloves on the hand, naturally). Anything beyond that -- I call an electrician. Yes, I'm "throwing away" $100 or $60 or whatever the guy charges for a housecall for a dumb 10-minute fixit job. But at least he knows what he's doing, and I feel safe. If you are feeling unsure about the issue in any way, just bite the bullet call an electrician. Nothing to be embarrassed about.

653 Otho, how old is the wiring? Is or was it common practice when the house was wired to "daisy chain" the outlets and such? I see you said the house was built in the 20's, was it wired then? (the reason I ask is many houses here were not wired in the 20's and the wiring style varies with age, I had one house that had twisted pair in some places, individual wires on insulators in the attic and Romex in other places. The individual wiring got pulled as soon as I found it and replaced with Romex.)

660 My understanding is that everything in Oz which is electrical must be done by an officially certified sparky. The inspectors will not accept amateur work even if strictly by the book.

Needless to say, this does not preclude electrical annoyances.

I would cycle all of the individual breaker switches through their full range of travel. If that didn't do it, I would call for the sparky to come investigate.

That's in Australia, of course. Stateside, I would dive in more deeply myself.

Patricia Martel, Daly City's assistant city manager, said building and electrical inspectors will trace the conduit from an electrical panel to one of four pool lights. Tests yesterday showed 124 volts of electrical current on the metal housing around the suspected light fixture at the shallow end of the pool, she said. "The conduit would have shot (electricity) into the light and into the pool," if a hot wire contacted it, she said. Down under stuff is something I've never messed with, but you're still on a simple 220v system. a quick google search tells me that it's common for outlets to be controlled by a switch... if a switch is bad, or if one of the outlets is bad, it can be a pain to find which one, but easy to fix.

And yes, it will be expensive for a pro to come diagnose & repair. I am more than happy to help a moron if I can.

But one thing I WON'T do, just on principle, if try to fix electrical problems. Even if I think I understand the issue and all the details involved. Even if I think it's totally safe.

Why not? Because electrical problems are just about the only thing in your house that if, they go wrong, can actually kill you.

I'll replace a bulb.
I'll even replace a blown fuse IF and ONLY if it easily unscrews with hand pressure (two layers of rubber gloves on the hand, naturally).

Anything beyond that -- I call an electrician.

Yes, I'm "throwing away" $100 or $60 or whatever the guy charges for a housecall for a dumb 10-minute fixit job. But at least he knows what he's doing, and I feel safe.

If you are feeling unsure about the issue in any way, just bite the bullet call an electrician. Nothing to be embarrassed about.

707 Otho, how old is the wiring? Is or was it common practice when the house was wired to "daisy chain" the outlets and such? I see you said the house was built in the 20's, was it wired then? (the reason I ask is many houses here were not wired in the 20's and the wiring style varies with age, I had one house that had twisted pair in some places, individual wires on insulators in the attic and Romex in other places. The individual wiring got pulled as soon as I found it and replaced with Romex.)

Wiring's pretty ancient. The house may be older than the 20's. I think it was actually done during the Boer war, or something. The electrician's back so I'll be off again for awhile. Pretty quick and hopefully it'll be "mates rates". A couple of wallbangers or white russians may seal the deal.

714 Met a lady at a bar tonight; first she wanted to talk about the missing flight. There were some things she didn't know, like the main pilot's wife and family had moved the day before he flew. But she had several conspiracy theories in mind nonetheless. meh, okay.

Then we went off into politics, where I figured I would screw things up. She described herself as an activist and a humanitarian. So I figure, prog or maybe libertarian. I told her I was involved in the Tea Party, and that she probably hates me. She goes "Why? Because I am black?"

Ruh Roh. So I told her I didn't know that she was black; that if I had to guess I would have thought you are an Asian Indian. But that her race didn't matter, it was her humanitarian descriptions that led me to my hasty initial conclusion.

Anyhow, she went on to describe herself as a CA black Republican that really wishes the JEF would get thrown out of office. Then she looked around to make sure other blacks were within earshot; she said ' because they will give me a hard time if they hear me taking like this.'

Anyhow, it was a fun convo and offered me a small degree of hope that not everyone has drank the koolaid.

Last weekend the Grumpy Grandma and I went to Austin to see the oldest girl and hand over a .40 to her for home protection. We went to the range (4 of us) both days. I rented a Marlin 30-30 and an AR 15, in addition to shooting the pistols. I'm sure the NSA is scrutinizing my expenditures as we speak. Even the guys at Academy were agog.

746 COJ, if I reading things right, the Lakota is supposed to replace the Blackhawk, Kiowa Warrior, and even the remaining UH-1 Iroquois fleet.

But since they took a civilian airframe and modified it for military use, I have a bad feeling. I remember how the EH.101 helicopters that Canada bought were civilian models impressed into military service, said service being so rough Canada ran through their inventory of prop shaft halves very quickly and had to ground them for awhile.
