NEWS

16 years after his last non-liscensed table, No Good Gofers (which is a really good table), Pat Lawlor is designing a new one for Jersey Jack Pinball

Who doesn't want to shoot AKB48 should be a real question? Bandai Namco is gonna give it to ya with a zombie based light gun game "Thrill of the Night". This is an old news article but it got lost in my bookmark folder

• Monolith showing off their upcoming Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor. It actually looks like it could be interesting, lore be damned

Have to admit, I was surprised to find out that League of Legends wasn't the top mark for revenue from online games last year. And it wasn't even close by a magnitude of almost a third of a billion dollars.

People who don't know anything about marketing are upset about standard marketing stuff. I personally have never done this at my last job in 07-09 so here are my expense reports from 03 to prove it.

So yeah, King.com (owners of Candy Crush Saga) has been approved with a trademark for the word "Candy". Okay......
2K trolls Vita owners by getting the hopes up that Borderlands 2 is actually coming out for the handheld.

As much as I don't think I need or want a sequel to it, NIGORO and Playism threw up a kickstarter for a sequel to La-Mulana. At the current rate, wouldn't expect it to get anywhere on their stretch goals outside of Mac and Linux verisons as they're asking for a wee bit too much money on the majority of stuff.

• Hasn't been a good Spider-Man game since Spider-Man 2 (which was 10 years ago) but a new movie means a new game

On one hand, Monster Monpiece is coming to the States. And on the other, it's being censored. Considering the game is supposed to be a pretty decent CCG, both of these are good things. I won't link to the card art but yeah, some of that stuff sure as hell won't fly here. Don't matter how you try getting around it by saying they're 1000 year old witches, they still look pre-teen. Throw in the mechanic where you jerk off your Vita that not only powers up the cards but also strips them down to wearing barely anything and I'm kinda surprised they targeted this to come out over here.

And speaking of the Vita, the dungeon crawler Demon Gaze got a US release date and a collector's edition. April 22.

• Though I personally have no hopes for this, it's always nice to get more golf games, especially with the current state of this specific sport and video gaming (Links was the last good sim based Golf series and it's last entry was 10 years ago)

• Can't say that I've been impressed with what I've seen of Shovel Knight so far but this new trailer had gotten me curious.

The Star Citizen gravy train still rolls as they announced that they've raised over $37 million.

SOE announced the shuttering of four MMOs: Vanguard, Wizardry Online, Star Wars: Clone Wars and Free Realms. Nothing of value was lost.

SOE also announced an all you can eat monthly plan. For $15 a month, you get sub benefits for all of their games. Not a bad deal per say, will look better when the upcoming EverQuest game comes out.

Since it's release last month, Minecraft on the PS3 has sold a million copies.

Microsoft reported a good second quarter profit of $6.56 billion. Moved 3.5 million units of the 360 and a good uptick in their overall devices division.

• Paradox announced Hearts of Iron 4. Hopefully they learned from the misstep of the third game

New Releases

Broken Age (PC) - The first part was released last week to the Kickstarter backers but this week it's released to public. Though it's been heaped with a ton of praise, I'll be interested in seeing how this is looked at by the people who didn't back this.

Call of Duty: Ghosts Onslaught (360, XBox One) - First expansion pack for the new Call of Duty. Never been a big fan of COD but the Fog map looks interesting.

DC Universe: The War of the Light Part 1 (PC, PS3 and PS4) - New expansion pack for the game, this time the story line is based around the Red Lantern Corps. Not a big fan of the game and haven't cared for the Red Lanterns in the comics (really haven't cared much about the DC universe in general lately) but it's a new expansion.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition (PS4 & Xbox One)- Square Enix trying to actually make money on this game (it finally broke even) by releasing a better and last gen but still a down port of the PC release for a full $60. Don't get me wrong, I really liked this game but I don't see the point of this, especially at full price. It's been $10 and under on the PC quite a few times and I would recommend that (outside of tress, the specs aren't high) but if you want to get bent over, the PS4 is the way to go. Gamestop broke streetdate and the early impressions is that both are variable FPS (which is bad in any case) with the PS4 running between 45-60 and the XBox One running between 30-45. And no, none of the DLC was worth buying.

Tomb Raider Game of the Year Edition (360, PS3)- Just buy a new copy, there have been plenty of times to get it for $20 or so and none of the DLC was worth the cash.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch (PC) - I thought the first game sucked and this one looks worse IMO. But people have been looking forward to this for some reason.

Rymdkapsel (PC)- I really dug this game on my ipad. It's a nice quirky abstract base building & resource management game. That being said, spend more than the $4 I spent for it on the iOS and I don't think it's worth the money as there just wasn't enough content there.

What I've been playing this week

Been slow going in Assassin's Creed 4 (I just got the boat so yeah, very slow) as my attention has been on a few different things (and real life stuff).

Apparently Aksys released a English version of the seminal visual novel Banshee's Last Cry aka Kamaitachi no Yoru on the iOS store. It's the first official English release of Chunsoft's popular "sound novel". It's based on the Playstation re-release of the novel. It's "free" in that it gives you a teaser but it costs $4 and worth the cash.

Also been replaying XCOM: The Bureau, this time on the PC for some reason (Amazon stacked my Editor's Choice credits and only cost me $2.50). Still have my misgivings about it but still an interesting romp.

When I went to see Jack Ryan (I liked it), I got to play the new Batman arcade game again, though it wouldn't work for a console port, that game is a lot of fun and just feels really tight. They also had a copy of Big Buck HD, eh, its more of the same when it comes to the series.

Bandai Namco also released a free touch version of Tales of Phantasia and wow does that port really suck. It's kinda appalling that it got through Q&A.

Other than that, it's just boring regular non-videogaming crap filling my life (reading and designing new furniture for the year).

That's it, I'm done

1 Woo Hoo!  Game thread.  I've been trying DayZ SA (via Steam) this last week..  any others of the horde playing?  It's got a tough learning curve for teh noob, but has potential if they can tweak a few things.

3 I liked the DayZ mod at first but after it got popular, the whole community changed and I didn't like that (it also pretty much killed off ArmA 2 which peeved me as well). Though I like supporting Bohemia, I probably won't be picking up the stand alone DayZ game

4 Got a 32X for my Genesises (Genesii?) this week, but it's missing a cord. I'll visit my favorite electronics parts house on Monday and see if they have something to replace it or the parts to make one.

9 I never played it, but wasn't Spider Man:Shattered Dimensions pretty popular? I've seen lots of people praise the game.

I'm catching up on games I never got around to buying or finishing(if I did buy them), since I do not have the disposable income for a next gen console. And nobe of the 360 games coming out this year interest me, except for Lightning Returns and maybe that Street Fighter IV update.

 I'd like to get a 3DS, though...

Posted by: Crazee(@Crazizzle) at January 26, 2014 11:24 AM (ynzfm)

10 Of course, I'm in no hurry to get either a PS4 or XboxOne right away, since none of the killer apps so far interest me. Well, except Killer Instinct. But until there's at least 10 games I want, I'm not buying either system.

15 "trying to rescue a man who was trying to kill himself"

Protip: if you're in Commiefornia, even if you can rescue someone at no risk to yourself, DO NOT DO SO.

Our state Supreme Court considered a case in which a young woman was in a car after an accident. The car appeared to be burning and it was feared it might explode or cook her to death inside. She was dragged to safety by someone acting in the very purest of good faith.

Car was later found by an engineering inquest to have been at no risk of explosion. Occupant suffered life-altering injuries to her cervical spine from the extraction from the car. She sued her rescuer. Case went up to the Commiefornia SCOTUS, who said, "Go girl!"

As far as I'm concerned, "Go girl!" translates to "No way, Ray."

I have stepped in to help people in urgent crises before. I quit cold turkey after that. At least here in CA. Not worth losing everything I've worked for.

16 Also, while I enjoyed Tomb Raider the first time I played it, I recently went back to it and it didn't grab me again.  They need to fire the sadists on their design team, for one thing.

Posted by: Viridian at January 26, 2014 11:38 AM (5ypJ8)

17 They sure beat the shit out of Lara but yeah, I can't see myself replaying it even though I thought is was one of the better games released last year

Posted by: Crazee(@Crazizzle) at January 26, 2014 03:24 PM (ynzfm

I've played Shattered Dimensions.  It is a pretty good game overall.  The Spider-man Noir though sucked.  And while its a pretty good game, its just really linear in its play.  There is only one way to go and no real options to do it other than the one way.  Far too many upgrades in the game too.  So Spider-man, its much better in an open world where you have the main story to do but can swing through the city and Shattered Dimensions did not have that.

Oh, also The Castle Doctrine is coming out of alpha this week. Over the last year it's morphed into a really cool time waster that you spend a few minutes goofing off every few days. You build a maze with self defense mechanisms and people run it to get it to your safe (and you run other people's house layouts). Full price is going to be $15 but you can still pick it up at the site for $8 (comes with a key for Steam)

Posted by: A-Hole at January 26, 2014 03:45 PM (VvFH1)

like all Kickstarter projects, I'm strongly skeptical

Posted by: The Dude at January 26, 2014 11:51 AM (bStrg)

25 I guess since this is the time of year we're supposed to do roundups, my three favorite games from last year were Saints Row 4, Borderlands 2 and Papers, Please.  Bioshock Infinite...the more I think about it the less I like it.  The mechanics were uninspired and the storyline was deliberately obtuse to hide the MEGA TWIST at the end.

There's a new indie game out called Nidhogg that's a sort of 2D swordfighting simulation and it's fun - but only against other people.  Don't buy it for the single-player.  But spearing one of your friends through the head with a thrown sword is quite fun.

Hearthstone beta is now completely open, so anyone who wants to get their Magic-alike on now can.  Since it's a Blizzard game you'll find plenty of players.

Blizzard also released the Starcraft II Arcade for free; this is basically a huge set of mods for SCII.  Some of them are brilliant, my personal favorite is Hive Keeper, which is Dungeon Keeper 2 reimplemented in the Starcraft II engine.

27 Took a peek at "Demon Gaze".  If I understood it correctly, it seems like it's going to be an "Etrian Odyssey"-style game with dating sim elements thrown in.  Seems to have been popular in Japan.  What few English reviews I was able to dig up were favorably inclined toward the game.  Thanks for the heads-up, Dude.

Finished up the "campaign" in Gran Turismo 6 yesterday.  Shame it isn't selling better.  It's my fave entry in the series since GT3.

45 Thanks for the post! Love gaming but have been way too lazy to actually find news about things lately. So these weekly updates are great to at least keep somewhat current. For example, had no idea a new Lord of the Rings game was coming out, and that has the promise of looking fun. Very happy to see that they're releasing for last gen for that one, don't want to upgrade yet.

46 Flatbush Joe... re driving..   I've played Euro Truck sim 2 on steam and I didn't think I'd like it, but it's actually been kinda fun.  Scenery of Europe.  They're working on an American version.

Do a youtoob search ... there are several vids showing the gameplay..  Sale time on Steam is time to get it cheap if you think you might like it but aren't sure.

52 Woohoo, got some linkage. Thanks

I'm really looking forward to Pat Lawlor's new design. I had been thinking of getting one of The Hobbit pins by JJP later this year but now I'm tempted to wait and see what Pat does.

Batman Arcade is a lot of fun, I think it will become a big collector item down the road.

In regards to Big Buck HD, the significant thing about it this time around, aside from the graphics upgrade to 1080p@60fps, was it became more like the Golden Tee golf you mentioned. Extensive online and tournament play features, Twitter/Facebook connectivity, tons of achievements and the cabinet design leaves the monitor out of it so the buyer goes out and spends what they want on it for quality. Also the platform was designed for constant updates like Golden Tee, they have said they want it to have a lifespan of 10 years or so.

Posted by: Arcadehero at January 26, 2014 02:01 PM (aS0AZ)

53 Didn't notice that about Big Buck though I'll totally cop to the fact that I was rushed playing it. Had 5 minutes to kill after getting off Batman and threw some tokens in. I'll have to give it another spin at the theater

Posted by: The Dude at January 26, 2014 02:05 PM (bStrg)

54 That's understandable If it was upgraded with the Duck Dynasty software then they also added an "arcade" mode that lets you just play without entering any info.

Also I just remembered that it has cross-site play. That's a big feature to have for an arcade game but costs an extra $1. 4 players from anywhere get to play against each other in real time. I don't see people try that very often on the BBHD I have but its nice to see arcades start to kind of catch up on that sort of thing.

55 huuuuge fan of the original x-com:ufo defense. downloaded the terror from the deep later and it was terrible. a single mission took like 15 hours and the aliens had a knack for obliterating your goons before you could do anything. would LOVE to get the latest one but.. i looked on amazon and it's part of this bs "steam" thing? so what is that, just some racketeering middleman who forces you to go through them to have any hope of playing the software you paid for? so you can't play without an internet connection, or when their servers are down, or when they go out of business.. what kind of RICO bs is that? i haven't bought a new console game since the ps2 and haven't bought a new pc game in like 15 years, is this how all games are now? if i buy x-com on a console instead of the pc - do they racketeer you through those too? i've never seen or played a ps3/ps4/or xbox, are they similarly going to rip me off and force me to play these through their version of the cloud?

57 Not a big gamer but my extended family loved this: The Gamers Desiderata Go placidly amid the smoke and carnage, and remember what peace there may be between lives. As far as possible without sacrificing a clear shot, be on good terms with all combatants. Deliver your truth with careful aim, and let others discharge theirs into walls and crates, even the slow and clumsy; they too have firepower. Avoid berserk and trigger-happy partners; they get fragged early. If you compare yourself with others, you may get distracted and miss; there will always be greater and lesser shots than yourself. Enjoy your lucky takedowns as well as your ambushes. Keep on top of your marksmanship, however degraded; it is a real possession in a world of varying armaments. Exercise caution in choosing a stakeout, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what cover there is; all players seek the high ground, and everywhere death is tinged with heroism. Shoot straight. Especially, do not feign loyalty. Neither be cynical about courage; for in the face of withering crossfire it is as perennial as reincarnation. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the reflexes of youth. Nurture depth of cunning to avenge sudden "misfortune". But do not distress yourself with paranoid delusions; many fears are born of adrenal exhaustion. Beyond a wholesome discipline, cut yourself some slack. Your polygons are rendered on the same pipeline as those of the crates and ramps; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, the play is proceeding as it should. Therefore be at peace with your CPU and graphics card, as crusty as they already are; and whatever your tactics and strategies, in the bloody melees ahead keep your stats up and your weapon ready. For all its pixellation, artifacts, and outright bugs, it is still a kick-ass game. Be hard-core. Strive to outlive.

59 shadow of mordor looks like it could be pretty great. shame that wraith thing is perhaps cringe-worthy enough to be impossible to look past. might hold my nose and give it a look yet. been getting into crusader kings II a good bit this week, staying up way too late trying to arrange marriages and hatch plots and win wars and salvage losing wars. I'm probably objectively pretty horrible at it, but I'm having fun apart from that, been slowly working my way thru thief 2 in preparation for the thief reboot coming out in a few weeks, and as always playing spelunky, without question my game of the year

60 I read this thread twice.  All I want to know is, what the hell are you talking about?  And why do you have time to play all of these weird games?
