I bought my first gun. It is a sweet Rossi 22lr pump action with a wood stock and 18' barrel. You might wonder how I got here. It is an interesting story.
Back last August, I had just moved to Bethesda and excited about attending the NoVa MoMe. I couldn't wait to meet the wonderful Hordians who had virtually held my hand while I made the biggest move of my life. I asked about Ubering there and got an email from Weasel introducing me to JesseinDC who offered me a ride. This is the beginning. Then came Texas and the opportunity to actually hold a gun and some expert advice from Satrose and Eromero and others as well as fun and laughter and new like minded friends.
Jesse believes all women should learn to shoot and proceeded to back this up by inviting me to go shooting. We went to a range in VA with his friend Rick. Every time we went, he brought a bunch of different firearms and I got expert help figuring out what I needed to do to succeed which included wearing a patch on my left eye. One day, he put an old Rossi pump action rifle in my hands, showed me how to load it and put me in front of a bunch of metal targets, spaced at different intervals and many different sizes. I put the rifle to my shoulder and proceeded to hit everything I aimed at. All the other shooters could hear the pings as I hit the targets and were cheering me on. It is hard to describe how that made me feel, but I knew I wanted to own that type of rifle and Rossi had just reissued this pump action Gallery gun. I got to handle it at my first gun show a few weeks ago and ended up ordering it from Guns.com. It was cheaper than the show and they sent it to a local gun shop for me to pick up after I filled out the paperwork and they ran the background check.
I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet and I need to learn how to clean it but hoping to do that shortly. Ammunition is relatively cheap and available so another good reason to own a 22lr. Next thing is to figure out what kind of handgun I want to own, but in t he meantime, I'm going to have great fun shooting my new rifle.
As the saying goes "A handgun is only good til you can get to your rifle".
Next up our pal f'd shows what ammo prices looked like in the before time.
Found this in an old ammo stash. 38 Special - 13 cents per round. Don't know the vintage but pre Y2K I think.

Picked up a can of 200 tracer rounds from the 50's. Examples of the best and worst of the bunch in the pics.

I pulled the bullet from the ugliest one. Looked and smelled good. Now to try to set the night on fire.

Yesterday at the range, I got a hot brass caught just above my eyebrow under my plastic eye wear. Glad I had it on!
Is there any safety equipment that is particularly superior by brand or type? What kind of goggles do glasses wearers use? How about headphones? I have the noise canceling battery powered headphones and I like them even if I get really mussed flat hair, haha. As an 'ette, I know better than to wear low cut shirts to the range, but are there other recommendations? Anyone wear gloves using handguns or long guns? Just picking the brains of longtime shooters.
I just saw A.H. Lloyd's good notes about cleaning after every use on the latest gun thread, and have my own little reason to add:
Invariably, while cleaning, I would find myself doing a sort of after-action review, which was not only enjoyable, time at the range makes me happy, but possibly even productive in helping me curb bad practices and reinforce good ones.
OK, two questions for the horde:
Any recommendations for an inexpensive muzzle-loader?
And, how about an air rifle? Would you avoid the ones requiring a cylinder?Posted by: GWB at March 21, 2021 09:45 PM (QTm+F)

I'm just sitting here looking at a (partial) 50 rd. box of CCI Velocitor, .22LR. Ten of 'em have been fired by whoever had the box before me.
40gr. lead, copper plated hollowpoint. Box proclaims 1435 fps. velocity.
We're all accustomed to 36gr. pills moving out like that, but for a 40 gr. round, that's just flat out screaming downrange. Looks like I'm going to have to break out the CZ-452 Lux for a bit of a testing session. Kind of the opposite end of the spectrum, I'd imagine, from the Remington 40 gr. Sub-Sonic rounds which could barely be heard to fire at the TxMoMeet.
Pity, I can't go shoot till the 29th, at soonest. Damn 10 day quarantine.
I gots the 'vids, dammit. The good news? I'm locked-down in the Gun Room, with all the booze, guns, cigars and books. Roughing it, I tellya! Damn well roughing it!

Looking at property. We go walking the agent grabs a little .40 for his carry piece. Never know what we might find he says.
Says to my SiL I have a couple of guns in the truck right now but if it was hunting season it would be 5 or 6.
He says people around here like their guns. Noted.

Even though it specifically banned tracer rounds on the liability waiver, some yute thought it would be fun to shoot tracer rounds at the indoor range I'm a member of. The shredded rubber that they were using to absorb the rounds caught fire. My range was closed for three months to repair the damage.

I always wear one when I go shooting. Normally I prefer a hat with a brim for maximal shade, but when shooting, I want that extra forward cover (plus the ear protection fits over it better).
I can't tell you how many times brass has bounced off the visor. I don't even flinch anymore. It's just a thing. I've also noticed that most (if not all) the "pro shooters" on youtube have baseball hats on when they do their drills.

Only reason why ammo prices might be going down is that scared people have seen their credit card statements...I figure it's like last year's toilet paper panic where in a few years we'll have episodes of Storage Wars where they break open a locker and there will be 20,000 rolls of TP in it.

If you're talking a .22lr pistol, I've had a blast with the Ruger Mark II. But the new Mark IV is much easier to field strip.

A good friend of mine in Blanco has it too right now. See if you can access a tank or 2 of oxygen to supplement with if you have trouble breathing or feel really run down. She has a lingering case going on 10 days now. She finally started taking HCQ on Friday and is starting to feel better but is really tired and worn down. I dropped off several canisters of "Boost Oxygen" since I couldn't source any canisters of medical O2. It's better than nothing in a pinch. I wish I could have found her a canister or 2 of O2 for her to breath.

For .22 rifle glass, use the same premium stuff you would for a centerfire rifle, but do ensure that it has a parallax adjustment down to 25 yards. Many "big rifle" scopes won't adjust down to under 50 yards. Don't go cheap on scope or rings, ma'am. Buy once, Cry once.
For .22 handguns? Semi-auto, I don't think you can beat a Browning Buckmark UDX, with the flat-sided, forged and machined steel 6" barrel. The versions with an aluminum barrel with a steel liner are..inferior. But, the Buckmark has 1911 ergonomics, and what I think is the best trigger in the common-market .22 pistol world. You'd have to go up to a Hammerli Free Pistol to do much better.
Conversely, you can NEVER go wrong with a S&W model 17 .22 revolver. But it's going to cost you, dearly.
Other end of things? Heritage Rough Rider .22 Single Action (cowboy gun). Very often found at under $200, retail. More straight up FUN that the law might allow.
Those are my $0.02 worth of opinionage.

By the way, I scored some 45 acp, it was stocked, on the shelves, in Prescott, AZ. Only $50 a box! Such a deal! I did run across 45 acp as high as $89 a box, but, passed. I wasn't quite that desperate.
Now, for a range report: I have a rifle competition coming up, and made the two hour drive to a range that was set up for me to get adjustment data for my K31 out to 700 yards. Yep, I started my very first log book! And, after I was done, realized I might not be able to trust what I'd written down. But, it's a building block toward developing shooting data.
Thanks, Weasel, for starting my down this road!

I don't shoot .380 any longer and I have over 800 rounds of it. That was the only center fire caliber I could tolerate for about six months after my surgery so I bought a metric crap ton of it including about 500 rounds of Hornady XTP ammo.
That stuff is going for $4.00-$5.00 a round right now. I paid shmaybe 40 cents a round for it three years ago. Got four sealed 125 round boxes of it.

I recently had a very mild case of Covid, and on the day I got out of quarantine I woke up feeling extremely fatigued. I called my doctor and she prescribed Ivermectin, but after 3 days it wasn't healing and it turned out I had Covid pneumonia. I think if I had called her right away when I got my positive test and gotten on the ivermectin at that time, I wouldn't have gotten worse.
I'm perfectly recovered and fine and dandy now, by the way.

For ears I use the Howard Leight muffs, the big un's for indoor and if anyone is using artillery (muzzle braked 338, etc) nearby. Skinnier ones for most of the time, outdoors (I double up with plugs and the big muffs indoors). Don't have the model numbers, but I picked them by NRR (the system used to rate noise-reduction) - I think they had the highest ratings on that scale when I bought them.
Midway had Walker's electronics on sale (maybe they still do) for a sweet price, but to be honest I've never noticed needing/wanting that kind (and I'm an RO at an outdoor range). My hearing is excellent, so (so far) my hearing protection doesn't interfere with me hearing what I need to. I do have a cheapie electronic set next to the bed, for the 1/1,000,000,000,000,000 contingency of home invasion and needing to empty brass indoors.

If buying used, look for a Thompson/Center Renegade. Half stock, adjustable sights, and double set triggers. I've used one for over thirty years. Get one in fifty caliber for easy to find round ball.
If you want a revolver, look for a Pietta in 44 caliber on sale. Steel frames are preffered but the brass frame versions will be find if you keep the powder charges around 20 to 25 grains.

I really like the Beretta Cheetah. Some of the MiMorons have shot it.
That said, I don't like .22LR pistols for anything other than training because rimfire ammo is just so finicky. For self defense I'd look at .25 auto (which was designed by Browning to have the same ballistic performance of 22LR fired through a rifle) or maybe .32 ACP.
Nice thing about .32 is that there are tons of cheap but good Euro guns available in the caliber.

Any recommendations for an inexpensive muzzle-loader?
It's hard to beat the cheapo $100 or so* Traditions .50 caliber starter kit that you can (could?) pick up at any big box store. I've taken dozens of whitetail with one that I've had for decades. Nothing fancy, but I have zero ethical questions with iron sights and 50-70 yard shots. I'm sure others can take a deer at longer distances, but that's about where my old man eyes limit me. I've become partial to the sabot style of bullet, too.
And if you can find them in stock the little pre-measured powder tablets are the way to go.
* Enough time has passed that it's probably closer to $200 by now, I guess.

Basic "ball" ammo is much cheaper and easier to come by. Everything is hit or miss. The truck rolls in and hey! You win three boxes of almost reasonable ammo!
Or it's packed with crate after crate of match-grade .308 Winchester.

Counterpoint: If .380 suits you, go with it. Whatever savings you get from cheaper ammo can easily be wiped out by needing to go through tons of it to learn to control the weapon.

Have been musing about selling a can or two of surplus 7.62X54R from my vast stockpile. Doubt I'll ever get around to shooting it all. And the mark-up from my purchase price would be dizzying.

I bought an air rifle. It's a Crossman pump. Honestly, I bought it partly because it reminded me of my dad's, with which I grew up shooting. This one is *very* hard to break open.
Unfortunately, I discovered when it arrived that it's made in f***in' China. A disappointment, that. But I do have an air rifle now. And it came with a cheapo scope, so cool. (It's the only scope I own at this point.)
I'm also working on some lights for a couple of my weapons. I noticed that AKs don't have much of any way to add gewgaws like the AR. No chainsaw bayonets for AKs.

Other end of things? Heritage Rough Rider .22 Single Action (cowboy gun). Very often found at under $200, retail. More straight up FUN that the law might allow.
Uberti is another one to consider, although I have no personal experience with the factory .22. I *do* have personal experience with their Single Action Army clone (Cattleman, $185 new) with a .22 adaptor in it, and it has been outstanding.
That pistol in long Colt always pisses off a dear friend of mine who paid about $1400 or so for an authentic Colt. I always have to remind him I've got a $200 piece of junk and he's got an authentic Colt, but he always reminds me that my $200 piece of junk outshoots his fancy Colt whenever we take them out together.

One my M1s has a rear vertical sight issue (aperture slips down during firing) and the other one needs the front sight moves a tiny bit to the right (but screw is frozen - waiting til I do one of the infrequent total disassemblies to use Kroil on it and try to break it).
But they work fine overall, and I have some key spare parts (all USGI) for them.

I take the opposite view: by having diversity of calibers odds are something will pop up and the price won't be half bad.
One of the last calibers to run out was .32 and I loaded up on it while it was in stock. Fun to shoot, love the Euroguns that run it.
Hitting the gun shows have been fun because people are clearly cleaning out their sock drawers and dumping 20-year-old 7.65mm Browning for *twice* what they paid for it. Since they paid $10, it's not a bad deal.
I'm really tempted by some of the oddball prices. .32 S&W Long is calling me because the weapons that use it are so cheap.

Friend told me today he shot an Arex Rex Zero. I had no idea what that was until I looked it up on the interwebs. Apparently a Slovenia company that cloned the P226.
Interesting. Thanks for this. The P226 is one of my favorite pistols, and a fine, easy shooting gun. I'll keep my eyes out for one of these.

Jesse, I shot a Ruger 22 I think on our first trip to the range. It was a pretty comfortable fit as I recall and maybe something for Lin-Duh to consider. If you could post the details. Obviously, I have no idea. Also, this site, Guns.com has really interesting articles. Sent me one the other day about a new Glock 22 that they thought was pretty good. Reviews and other info at the site. My son thought I was making a joke when I told him I ordered the rifle from Guns.com. Wonder how they managed to secure that name.

At this moment, I don't have a Covid doc., but there is one at UTMB (medical teaching college, Galveston) who IS a strong HCQ advocate. I'll get what I need, there. My regular MD up in League City isn't a fan of HCQ, being more of the "conventional thinking" herd. He's a good doc for GP and blood pressure stuff, but I won't be seeing him for Covid treatment.

I'd second the vitamins and minerals...and I'd recommend picking up a finger pulse oximeter (from anywhere, but Amazon is the easiest place to purchase). What will kill you is not realizing your O2 saturation is too low til it's too late. It's also a great tool to know if you feel bad, but can stay home or you feel good, but you have to get help (aka - O2 saturation drop isn't normally noticeable til it's too late)...
I'll be sending thoughts and prayers your way that you stay in Phase 1 and get well, and never get to any Phase 2 of the disease...

The older revolvers offer some incredible bargains. Younger crowd doesn't much care for them, but you can find some in excellent condition going for grocery money. The ammo is a little trickier, but like I said, at shows you'll see battered old boxes fished out of someone's closet that are still good to go.

Any documentation stating the amount of miles required by X number of electric cars to make up for the emissions from the batteries burning into the atmosphere?
Or are we just supposed to not count that part?

USE WATER TO FIGHT A HIGH VOLTAGE BATTERY FIRE. If the battery catches fire, is exposed to high heat, or is generating heat or gases, use large amounts of water to cool the battery. It can take approximately 3,000 gallons (11,356 liters) of water, applied directly to the battery, to fully extinguish and cool down a battery fire; always establish or request an additional water supply. If water is not immediately available, use dry chemicals, CO2, foam, or another typical fire-extinguishing agent to fight the fire until water is available. Apply water directly to the battery. If safety permits, lift or tilt the vehicle for more direct access to the battery. Apply water inside the battery ONLY if a natural opening (such as a vent or opening from a collision) already exists. Do not open the battery for the purpose of cooling it.

Revolvers are interesting because they have the ability to chamber all sorts of stuff that may or may not be good for them.
Take the .32 ACP for example. It's semi-rimmed, so it should fit into any revolver chambered for .32 caliber.
BUT it has much higher pressure than what those revolvers were built to accept. You can literally blow up the damn gun. Lots of those older revolvers were originally built for black powder loads and when smokeless became the thing, they simply kept making ammo at the old pressures. The interwebs say that the 632 was built for S&W .32 Long which means that it can also handle .32 S&W short.
BUT the key is to do the research and see what the pressure of those rounds are. After WW I, a lot of British Webley's were "shaved" to accept .45 ACP which they are NOT able to handle. Pressure is too high.

Most of the people on the main range seem to reload, and I keep meaning to ask people up on one of the handgun ranges how they're getting/affording their ammo these days.
Another RO had a dueling tree target, but not steel - the paddles are this self-healing plasticy stuff. The "frame" is just 2x4s (so, replaceable as they get shot up ..... if you can afford it now!). Very interesting. Our range rule book has nothing on such targets, so request has gone up the chain to develop SOP and rules.
No particularly unusual gunz to report. But one thing - another day on which there were two distance rifle shooters with very impressive set-ups. Last month it was a guy with some kind of "sonic" system that reported, via wi-fi, his bullet impact points instantly back to his tablet. He had a LabRadar chrono on the other side of him. So he just got up on his elbows, checked to the left, checked to the right, and instantly had his velocities and impact points. This month, guy had some kind of camera-based system that reported his hits back to the line. Good thing I am not a distance or precision shooter - I think there is a theoretically infinite amount of $$$ that can be poured down the toys and gadgets if you have that form of the disease.

Yes, but for us both, honestly. I approach hunting in a fairly bittersweet way and have almost given it up a few times after watching animals teaching their young and the little ones playing. I'm not giving up meat, though, and I still do it partly for the tradition and partly to remind myself that something's life has to be sacrificed so that my family's does not. The least I can do is try to make it quick.

Really not a bad idea. The AR platform is the Mr. Potato Head of rifles, and the 9mm is the most common of ammos (I think).

Finally got the boss to the range and it appears she likes the S&W Model 60 (snub-nose 357/38 revolver). She shot it well, said she enjoyed it. It has a very effective CrimsonTrace laser grip on it, which I have yet to demo for her in the dark. Guy I bought it from dialed it in perfectly.
So even as we virtually speak, I'm plotting a new load to work up for her practice, something between the light lead bullet loads I use for revolver matches and the Federal and Speer self-defense ammo I have for this revolver. I have a bunch of 130gr FMJ bullets in 357 I've never found a good use for, so now I have one.
And I discovered that, somehow, I loaded a bunch of 9mm too light to cycle my XD9 properly. There has been a reloading stand-down, and a formal investigation has been launched. Firings and stern letters may result. Always work up my loads for semi-autos to where they cycle the gun, and then add a small margin (.1 extra grain of powder), for reliability. Did so with this load, but there's no doubt - get a FTE/FTF about every 6th or 7th round. Was able to confirm the pistol's OK yesterday after a match, ran some mags of factory ammo, and some other reloads, through it - no problem.
I'm going to get cute and see if using my old recoil spring will allow these reloads to work, if not, then a fellow RO buddy who always gives me stuff will get a few hundred rounds - his Glock cycled just fine with them this week.

--- The vitamin D absorption is "latitude" dependent. I think it was everyone north of Denver(?) can be outside naked all day in the winter and not get enough vitamin D.And for the rest of us there are certain times of the day you have to be out to get your skin working at making vitamin D. And the bad news: after you're, ahem, 29 your skin doesn't work as well as it used to; so, you need to supplement anyway.

In an attached condo, or apartment building, or typical suburban development, you might not want a WWII battle rifle to stop someone who's down the hall. For many reasons.

That is kind of what I had in mind by gathering the parts to build an AR-15 in 9 mm.
AOP, look at a magwell adaptor and 9mm upper. You'll need to get a heavier buffer (8oz or above IIRC), but you can use a 5.56 AR lower you've already got.
I think RRA sells everything at their website in the link above, but they're pretty proud of the magwell adaptors. I think those are around $100 or so at other stores.

Second: To practice and save ammo, consider getting an air rifle or pistol and a bullet trap for indoor fun. For the air guns there are plenty available with good accuracy at the limits of your basement range that don't make a huge dent in your pocket book. Remember that you are working on your shooting muscle memory and sight picture. For a bullet trap, I like the one I got from Sig-Sauer. It has right and left knock down targets with a center reset target that, IIRC, was about 30-40 bucks.
Third: For a Black Powder rifle I have a T/C 50 cal Hawkins and it is an absolute blast (SWIDT) to shoot. Mine is a finish it yourself kit that I got in the mid-90's. Don't know if they're still available though. There is something about the slow, methodical loading and firing of a black powder rifle, especially using a patched round ball, that makes it one of my favorites when I'm stalking the wild tin can.

Yesterday's was very good. Shot the 1911 because of my reload/cycling adventure with the XD (and this is not the revolver-friendly ICORE-ish monthly match, this is the other one). Slowed down, paid attention to finger position on the trigger, and shot fairly well.
In the last year I've shot less than in the previous 8 or 9. Getting back into these matches will raise my round count nicely.

I got an Obsidian Arms 20" 9 mm upper, with bolt, although it measures out at about 18" from the rear of the chamber to the end of the muzzle. It has an M-Lok label on it. I got the buffer tube, heavier buffer plug, and small parts kit as well. Also an adaptor that goes in a regular 5.56 P-Mag to allow it to stack and feed 9 mm.

I'll go fully against convention here, so get'cher slings and arrows aimed and ready.
The "blackpowder" rifle for me will be a modern one with breech loading, and the ability to wrench out the percussion cap breech and spin-in a 209 primer-ready breech in it's place. Or the reverse, as might be required. Versatility.
Breech loading, cause if it was good enough for the Ferguson Rifle, it's classic enough for me.
What I don't know is whether I'd go traditional blackpowder, modern pseudo-blackpowder, or the pressed cylinders of pre-measured boomy pills.
Sabot loads as primary, ball as practice and backup. And a twist rate selected to serve both, if possible.
If I'm resorting to the primitive, I want mine to be the most non-primitive one in the field. Because going to that Last Ditch implement means exactly that, and no one will care if I'm true to Davy Crockett's long rifle or Kit Carson's Hawken.
I just want gear that's gonna work, even if in the pouring rain.
That said? The smallbore Pennsylvania Rifle is about as pretty as they come, and the art in some of those is mind blowing in the extreme.
Owning and shooting one of those WOULD be for entertainment purposes, and especially if "squirrel" was the headliner for the day's entertainment.

I completely agree with this idea. Since I got back into handgun shooting, I use 3-5 targets and then take them home and look at them. I'll maybe fire around a hundred rounds or so, but I'm not really keeping track. I remember, usually, when I shot at that particular target, and I try to remember any specific ideas I was thinking at the time.
There are certainly times when I was nailing the center, and times where the broad side of a barn were safe. I remember the good shots and try to figure out how I was holding, the stance, and anything else. I also try to remember the bad shots, and what I was doing wrong.
Then, I take my pistol out, check it to make sure it is empty, make sure the ammo is not in the room, check it again, and then practice dry-fire. My grip has improved, the feel is just more comfortable and natural, and I can concentrate on my next area of improvement, the trigger pull.
For me, anyway, this is working, and often I am not firing a round, saving money.

I bought another project rifle when I haven't finished the last two I started. This one is a Savage model 12 in 6mm BR. Which is not a bad cartridge but this barrel has a twist that's way too slow for the heavier bullets I'm going to want to shoot. I've already accepted the idea that I may need to rebarrel and if I do that, I probably won't keep it 6BR. 6mm Dasher might be a good choice, or maybe .308 since I already have dies and it would let me shoot in F/TR. And right now all my stuff is packed up preparing for a move. I'm hoping to have a working, presentable rifle by MoMe time but we'll see.

Jim, No slings or arrows needed. Just a matter of preference. My interest in MLs and BP guns in general grew out of interest in history. As it turned out, the traditional style also can lead to more involvement in the hobby with making gear, learning older ways of doing things, etc. Since I don't hunt anymore I take a wider and more relaxed approach to using the guns. And in my case, the guns often feel better than modern ones for balance and recoil.

Quite a bit of steel cased .223 and 7.62 x 39 around and getting a bit cheaper. Aimsurplus has quite a bit as does JG Sales. Brass reloadable .223/5.56 is around but about 1 buck per round unless buying in bulk. Plenty of .308 Winchester around.
Other rifle calibers depend on US usage--.30-06 in short supply and high. Euro calibers are around and just slightly elevated.

Oddbob, check out the 6mm ARC it's pretty much a BR all sammi-ed up...Thanks for the suggestion but if it's a Grendel head diameter, then I would need to change bolt heads. Which is certainly doable on a Savage, so... Another one to put on the think pile. I'm not exactly an early adopter when it comes to calibers though. Other than an oddball Contender barrel, the 6BR is the first rifle caliber I've owned that was USGI standard issue at one point or another.

Hope to get out the range this week finally. Been tied up with work and some health issues.
BTW, old S&W Hand Ejectors, Rossi Model 69's, and Colt Police Positive in .32 S&W Long (aka .32 Colt New Police) revolvers are around for a lot less than .38 Special. Fun to shoot and easy on the hands. It is pretty much a reloading proposition right now unless you want to pay about 1 buck per round.
Buffalo Bore makes some decent self defense ammo in .32 S&W Long that is safe in solid frame revolvers made by Colt, Rossi, or S&W. Do not use this ammo in the break open revolvers. It is standard pressure but hard on those old break open revolvers as their heat treatment was either absent or not that well done on key action parts.

Reports are out there via John Farnam's DTI that Winchester and Remington have been having some issues QC wise on range ammo. The Federal companies, Speer, Federal, Blazer, CCI, are reportedly fine.
Handguns blaster ammo, usually keep some reloading notes by cartridge but don't bother to have separate notebooks for particular handguns. Those bound lab or school notebooks for a single class make good cheap notebooks for particular rifles or loads.

That's the thing though. Simple confiscation without criminal charges or a mental health hospitalization means his local police were holding the shotgun down at the precinct, and there's a process for getting the gun back, usually a written request, and maybe an in-person interview.
It's an informal procedural matter, not codified law.

But what is this strange new world? I can order ammo online with no hassle, yes, but it's mostly out of stock and far more expensive than I ever imagined. The brands are different. I remember Federal being the good stuff, and CCI being OK range ammo, but there's like a million choices now, some of them are probably terrible, some wonderful, and I don't know where to begin.
I would have look for the archives of previous gun threads, but we all know why I can't do that. So, a couple of questions:
What are good ammo sources online?
What are good ammo brands, both the good stuff and good reliable range fodder.
Bonus question: where the hell can I find ammo for my 264 Win Mag rifle?

I don't agree with red flag laws based on subjective danger but I do believe we can't ignore objective danger and maybe not sell guns to someone who was just interviewed by the FBI for cause without another check. You don't need new laws for that.

Federal, CCI, Speer, etc. have excellent quality control and no problems noted.
Winchester White Box is generally ok range ammo but dirty. Recently, Winchester took over the Lake City Ammo plant from Federal and some people report some QC issues of late. Winchester also opened a new .22 LR plant in Mississippi that is supposedly, haven't checked, to take the place of their Illinois plant for .22 LR.
Remington had severe issues as the company was going under, like Cash on Delivery for components, etc. Federal has now taken over the plant and reopened it.
Foreign ammo, Prvi Partisan is good, S&B okay, Norma and Lapua, premium stuff there including brass and bullets. GECO is another Euro brand quite good, Eley is premium .22 LR match stuff from Great Britain, and Ruag (Swiss) is also good.
Barnaul, Red Star Army, Wolf (the Wolf Gold is better and sourced differently also SK makes some of their .22), Golden Bear, Silver Bear, etc. are all steel cased and usually, not always, bi metal (aka steel) in the jackets of the bullets. Can introduce a worry about barrel wear for some. Not reloadable generally with Berdan primers and fired ammo can often smell like cat pee depending on the powder used.
.264 Winchester--try Midway USA and put the notifier function to send you a message when back in stock.

Hi Weasel!
Took two youngest kids to the farm to shoot the handguns. First time for both with handguns.
Youngest daughter has tiny hands and weighs 98#. She shot the 9mm great.
Son did OK, but he has exceptional fine-motor skills. He thinks he should only be knocking out bullseyes.
I sure wish they had a better instructor! (I am a terrible shot.)
Both had great fun.
Youngest daughter gave me the "teenager look" while going over the safety rules. After she saw the damage that the 9mm did to the target backing board, her respect for the gun went way up. She was VERY diligent on her safety rules after that.

Boutique firms, Black Hills (excellent but limited in cartridges), Nosler (excellent bullets and brass), Weatherby (Norma used to load for them dunno about now) but top notch stuff. Buffalo Bore is useful if you like Hardcast for a number of old timey rifles and pretty good in self defense category as well.
Fiocchi, some of their stuff is good, some is okay. Fiocchi has a plant in MO that produces some of their ammo here.
Posted by: whig at April 18, 2021 09:57 PM (pO7gM)
That seems, I dunno, like an unbelievable QC problem. Given the liability obsession (quite intense among ammo makers, obviously), and what I would think would be normal QC procedures (which wouldn't be affected by 24/7 production ramp-ups).

Posted by: Ralphie at April 18, 2021 09:57 PM (fLVm1)
Perhaps, but police aren't going to go out of their way to return weapons to the home in question. If no case, then the gun remains in evidence inventory until the suspect comes down to ask for it back, and I assume most never bother. It's a pocket veto sorta situation. Completely informal.
And, legally speaking, yeah, actually, we do kinda need new laws, if we're gonna setup any sort of red flag system. There needs to be clearly defined circumstances for prohibiting non-violent, non-felons from buying guns, time limits, official appeal processes, etc. Otherwise, any such prohibition would never survive a court challenge. There's no way to make any of this work without new bureaucracy.

Hornady is probably one of the ammo makers most similar to Federal and the key is to know what bullets are being used as Hornady has blaster grade bullets but also can have some excellent bullets with innovative technology at the high end. Hornady is also quite adept at working with rifle manufacturers to come out with new cartridges.
If you want to fire at serious long range for targeting etc., Weasel should be able to help.

Finally got my AR style extractors from PTG for the PTG bolt on my Remington project. Now to the barrel and then stock. Thinking that I will install a Remage type barrel nut barrel so that I can switch barrels among the same general type of cartridge. Will give up some accuracy in exchange for more surety in having ammo (or components) to feed it.
Starting with a .280 Remington I believe because I have a long action, then maybe a .284 Winchester barrel in a year or two.
Already reload for 7x57, 6.5x55, so then the next barrel in the lot after the .284 might be a 6.5 x 284.

I've stated before that Georgia Arms has impressed me with a small steady stream of what appears to be good ammo. You're not buying in bulk form them, probably, but you're getting 100 rounds at a time. ANd their prices seemed competitive.Otherwise, I scour different sites: Classic Firearms Wholesale Hunter Ammoland Ammo Man Midway USA Georgia Arms Palmetto State Armory Target Sports USA Bulk Ammo Ammunition Depot
