Is This Something? Jason Sudeikis Eyed to Play Irwin M. Fletcher in Fletch Reboot
— Ace

A combination thread: A blow-off thread for chatter, and an opportunity for lurking readers to delurk as commenters in a thread about nothing much at all.

Jason Sudeikis is being eyed to play one Irwin M. Fletcher (he has a byline called "Jane Doe," you know) in a Fletch reboot to be called Fletch Won.

Okay, Jason Sudeikis as done great work as a supporting actor. Can he lead? I don't know. Apparently We're the Millers made $270 million but I didn't see it. I guess people think he can lead.

As far as Fletch, I could see him in the role.

I'm a big fan of the Fletch film. Have you ever read the books?

Fletch Won is an origin story, described as a gritty action comedy with heart and more tonally in line with McDonald's novels than the Chase movies.

Um... I'm not sure that's a good idea. I have to admit I saw the movie before I read the books (and I only read a few). The first thing you see or read is generally the thing you like more, because that formed your first impressions; the second thing you see or read (even if it was the first thing in actual publication) seems "off," seems to be doing it all wrong.

I understand that bias and it's unfair to judge the Fletch books based on my first impressions of the Fletch character from the movie.* That said: The books seemed "off" and seemed to be doing it all wrong.

They weren't comedies. The book did include the famous "Will you kill me?"/"Sure" exchange (in fact, I think it was printed on the cover of the book), but otherwise, it was a fairly straight detective story.

The Wackiness Quotient was negligible. There was no Underhill Account to charge a steak sandwich to (and also a steak sandwich). Fletch did in fact give hard-to-remember pseudonyms, but I think they were hard-to-remember because they were so bland, rather than so strange (stuff like "John Forrest," not "John Cock-Toast-Uln.")

Fletch was not a double-talking hustler of the Rogue Slacker Who Skates By On Moxie and Charm sort, but instead a fairly standard ex-military tough-guy detective type. He served in Vietnam, actually.

It's hard to imagine the Fletch we know from the movies serving in Vietnam.

I've got nothing against the ex-military tough-guy detective type. I like that type a lot. I like Jack Reacher. I love Phillip Marlowe (not ex-military, but certainly tough).

But most of what made Fletch different from the regular shamus really comes from the movie (and Chase's rewrites/suggestions, probably), not from the novel itself. (Note: I think it's possible, or even likely, that after the Fletch film came out, the later Fletch novels emphasized the comedic side of the character, just like the comics' version of Tony Stark became a lot more like RDJr.'s film portrayal. But the first book, Fletch, wasn't a comedy.)

So, I assume when they claim that the movies will be more in the spirit of the books, they are doing what they do an awful lot in Hollywood, which is Lying About Everything for No Reason. And being Hollywood, they have that eternal chip on their shoulders that they're working in a second-rate medium, so whenever they want to claim they're doing serious, important work, they claim they're going back to the books for inspiration, because, you know, paperback detective novels are so elevated a form.

If they were doing the movie like the books, they wouldn't hire Jason Sudeikis.

They'd hire Jason Statham.

Seriously: Fletch is going to be gritty? How do you do a gritty urban crime drama in a world in which "Doctor Rosenpenis" is accepted as a plausible name?

Get out of town.

* Oh, and this is a silly thing, but the Fletch of the novels is blond.

See? It's completely unfair to the books for me to judge them by such absurd criteria -- Fletch is NOT blond!!!! -- but I did and I do.

49 The Chevy Chase "Fletch" is arguably one of the greatest pieces of film ever. Rates up there with "Citizen Cane", "Jaws" and "Bad Lieutenant". The scene where he is day dreaming of himself as a afro'd black Laker is a scream. "Fletch comes in at 6 feet 2 inches and 6 feet 10 inches with his hair!" This is NOT in need of reboot / remake. Whatever. Also, the books are just great. Expecially the first 3 or 5. Fletch gets hooked up with some Argentinian (?) gal who pronounces his name as "Flesh...." Great easy reads that will crack you up!

59 Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher.  Very different in many ways from the Jack Reacher of the books, but still sold the character for me.

You think of Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, and you think "no way". But think of Tom Cruise from Collateral--that man could play Jack Reacher any day. And he did.

I think that's a rare example of movie and book being different, but neither feeling "off".  For me, anyway. YMMV.

When birds travel in flocks, their behavior takes on emergent properties. Out of the chaos of flight, gorgeous, geometric patterns coalesce. This is what Dennis Hlynsky hopes to record. Birders refer to this as a “jizz” read of the species." I'm not sure if I would tell people about my hobby of "jizz" reading.

90 U.S. to relinquish remaining control over the Internet By Craig Timberg, Friday, March 14, 5:19 PM U.S. officials announced plans Friday to relinquish federal government control over the administration of the Internet, a move likely to please international critics but alarm some business leaders and others who rely on smooth functioning of the Web. Pressure to let go of the final vestiges of U.S. authority over the system of Web addresses and domain names that organize the Internet has been building for more than a decade and was supercharged by the backlash to revelations about National Security Agency surveillance last year. “The timing is right to start the transition process,” said Lawrence E. Strickling, assistant secretary of commerce for communications and information. “We look forward to ICANN convening stakeholders across the global Internet community to craft an appropriate transition plan.” The practical consequences of the decision were not immediately clear, but it could alleviate rising global complaints that the United States essentially controls the Web and takes advantage of its oversight role to help spy on the rest of the world. U.S. officials set strict conditions and an indeterminate timeline for the transition from federal government authority, saying that a new oversight body must be created and win the trust of crucial stakeholders around the world, officials said. An international meeting to discuss the future of Internet is scheduled for March 24, in Singapore. This can't be good

I put this in the podcast thread already but it's already a wasteland, so, here.

To Ace and the podcast crew,
Please dump this curse-free format. It's boring as shit.
The first podcasts were great, it was like sitting in a back room with some friends and some beers, talking shit about the other side. It was fun, there was laughter and hijinks and a person could feel that they were an equal in this setting, just one of the boys.
This highbrow thing is the complete opposite. It's a bunch of people "not like you" talking in a high minded, outsider way. This isn't a backroom chat on a saturday night, it's a panel discussion with suits and ties and correspondinly less fun and less engaging.
Doubtless you can't please everyone but come on guys, and Ace, don't go down this path. Drink and curse and behave like friends would when chatting about this stuff, in other words, be your natural selves. It's so much more entertaining and enjoyable.
Respectfully,

a listener

Three things about Cruise's Reacher that bothered me.

One is the hotel front desk clerk being asked if she knew of any guest that could kill the girl bare-handed, and she comes back with something like "you'll know him when you see him". That fits the Reacher from the books, who's a hulking brute, but no way in HELL is anyone going to look at little Tommy Cruise and think he's an obvious bare-handed killer.

Next is that the fight scenes were obviously a series of scripted moves, looked like he didn't do enough rehearsal time to make it look believable. Punch, pause, kick, pause, armlock, pause, elbow to the face, pause, etc. Irritating.

Last is that Cruise is obviously feeling insecure about his age. Every film he's done in the last few years has gone out of it's way to sell him as a sex symbol. The waitress in the bar giving him looks, hell, EVERY woman in the bar giving him looks before the bar fight.

To be fair though, Cruise has consistently done some of the best onscreen firearms handling in Hollywood, and this film is no exception. Helps that the director McQuarrie uses his former-SEAL brother to train his actors.

Posted by: IllTemperedCur at March 14, 2014 02:25 PM (TIIx5)

167 love reacher. have read them all. too bad tom cruise bought his way into the starring role. could have been a solid movie franchise. something about a character that allows providence or whatever dictate his way through life and it somehow helps the needy and results in beautiful retribution. now, how about that noah flick? sure hope they focus on gen 6:4 and the nephilim. a great writer could turn that into a franchise. point out that the mystery of gen 6:4 can be interpreted to include aliens and voila - any damn period and setting in history you want is at your fingertips. the battle between the powers and principalities "of the air" can be used. ie: showing involvement in nazi germany would be fascinating. sheesh, barely believable but wow we want to believe it for the sake of escape and fun and the hell of it works for so many fantastic comic books/super hero/sci fi movies that have been written and filmed. why not?

What's up, 'rons and 'ettes?
I used to post a lot more (mainly on the ONT), but life gets in the way...first, I had to get a second job on the weekends, and second, it hit me CW Jr. turns 18 this summer, and I hadn't been spending nearly as much time with the young man as I should.  So, by the time I get to read the ONT (which I still do every night), my brain is, to paraphrase Egon Spengler, beyond the capacity for rational thought.  You'd think that would not be a problem around here, but still....

This is still my favorite blog.  Ace, the cob loggers and The Usual Gang Of Morons all rock.  That is all.  I'm off to get a nap in before I have to head to Job #2.

227 I began reading the Fletch books when I was a teenager -- my dad got the first few and I read them after he did. Actually, the Underhill account (I think in the book it was Underwood) business was in the book. Fletch notices the name label is new and figures that their guests wouldn't be particularly well known. Also in the book, Stanwyk isn't actually married to the other woman, but is planning to fly away to South America with her. Another Gregory MacDonald character that would be great fodder for movies is Inspector Flynn, who's introduced in the second Fletch book -- Confess, Fletch -- and later had a couple of books where he was the featured protagonist.

228 While running some errands, I heard on the radio an ad by Rick Perry telling CA business to move to TX where it would be better for them. It was a 1 minute spot. There's a large photo of a guy with out a shirt, tats all over his chest, and Ted Cruz's head with a cigarette dangling from his mouth. It's a good look for Ted.

234 Going with Jason Statham would be too far in the opposite direction of the previous films. The books weren't comedies but there was snappy patter and a general attitude to the character I couldn't see Statham executing.

Bigger question: should the movie be done in the book's era or updated? Is Jane doe a blog tied to a big media outfit? Is Fletch still a veteran who refuses to receive his medal?

I love that movie!

Even though I've seen it probably 50 times...it still cracks me up.

There is some hilarious stuff in Down Periscope.

267 If this plane went up 43k feet and took a hard left, how come no one used their cell phone to say shit just got real? All those phones that appear to be working but no one answering. Are the passengers at gun point? Has the plane decompressed and the phones won't work because they are frozen? Posted by: The Yellow Pug at March 14, 2014 06:40 PM (r7mtu) You can call a cell phone that's been smashed to pieces and it will either ring or go to voice mail as long as the account is active Another is that by the time anyone realizes what's happened if they're still awake 2 hours into a long distance redeye flight, they're nowhere near a cell relay tower If the hijackers had a crew, they probably made sure to convince the passengers to kindly put their phones into the sack as the terrorist came by to collect them

There is a story behind the name, unrelated to the comic, but it's pretty silly.

283 I agree about the no cell tower so no cell service over water, and even if they land at some remote island and someone had a second cell phone on them which they didn't give up.  I don't think cell service there is as pervasive as it is over the US, where you can usually pick up a tower if you accidentally leave your phone on during a flight.  Not that I've ever done anything like that.

Under the horned helmet a square-cut black mane contrasted with smoldering blue eyes.

In an instant he was the center of a hurricane of stabbing spears and lashing clubs. But he moved in a blinding blur of steel. Spears bent on his armor or swished empty air, and his sword sang its death-song. The fighting-madness of his race was upon him, and with a red mist of unreasoning fury wavering before his blazing eyes, he cleft skulls, smashed breasts, severed limbs, ripped out entrails, and littered the deck like a shambles with a ghastly harvest of brains and blood.

421 Muab'dib, I have made a decision in regards to the Malaysian Mystery.

I have quit writing about it.  No one really knows what is going on.  And the people I have least faith in getting the correct facts out is the media and their 'sources close' to the investigation.  And way too many tinfoil hats are being worn too tightly by people lapping up what is being disseminated.

We will know when the wreckage is found.  If it ever is.  In 2003 someone stole a 727 out of an African airport.  It and the suspected thief have never been seen again after taking off.  US Navy Flight 19 is still missing.  So is Hale Boggs in Alaska.  Amelia Earhart and Star Tiger are still hard to find also.

Thanks Elisabeth Wolfe, email sent.

444 I remember after some of my first posts, blowing out the margins with dashes, ( ----- ). It never showed up on my screen and I didn't know about "Teh Marginz!" I got my ass chewed out and I had no idea why. Weft Cut-Loop tore me a new one, so here's what I did: I asked what I did, so I could avoid it again. Everyone, including WC-L were really cool about it. I then deciphered the html tags that were used by minx and quoted people with the "italics" I avoided The Barrel for nine months before leaving a tag open... and I use those tags A LOT. So my first "Barreling" was humbling, yet funny. You just grab your virtual brush and ask what the Hell they do in there-? Then you shut up for a half-an-hour and go about your merry way, only answering questions about your stay in The Barrel. That's how I do it, at least. Your Mileage May Vary.

465 I actually saw "We're the Millers", living in a small town in Northern Idaho will do that to you, I enjoyed myself, Will Poulter and Emma Roberts were both pretty good as the kids. Sudeikas is a pretty good casting for Fletch, he has the right combo of blandness and oiliness for that sort of role without being too handsome like Greg Kinnear. He is a more normal guy than say Ed Helms too.

Posted by: Rarity at March 14, 2014 07:38 PM (F+KiF) Like the nic! The few eps I have seen of that show were really cute. I don't drink either, but no one here minds...that I know of. 486 Nail on the head, Ace. Thanks for sticking up for these two classic movies. I guess they figure there's no way to do another one just like the two original movies without someone in the mold of Chase, which, again I'm just guessing, is dang near impossible. Chase is a boring old self-centered turd these days but his work on SNL and those few movies he was in, especially the two Fletch films, was comedy gold.

Raymond Chandler's short stories may not exactly be elevated, but they were very good, and could mostly be taken straight to script.  And being rather cheap to film, they would likely score some nice profits.  A few 1930's-1940's exteriors and interiors and costumes and you have the sets.  Now, a Peter Gunn movie?  That would be well-worth watching.

516 Late to the thread, but I think they're making a huge mistake going back to the books for the Fletch re-make. At the risk of re-iterating Ace's post, what people responded to in the original and what they're looking for in the new version is Fletch the merry trickster, navigating a mystery (and much of life) via the most absurd means possible, with a natural cunning aided and abetted by good luck, seasoned by loads of snark directed at deserving targets. He's Bugs Bunny in human form, and Chevy Chase owned that role. By the same token, Sudekis can't, and won't be able to pull it off - he lacks the flair and the goofy comedic ease. Honestly, a better choice would be who they originally had in mind for the re-make, Jason Lee. Barring that, the closest would be the guy who's made a career of being Jason Lee's pale imitation, Ryan Reynolds.

Let us assume that Iran just got their first Nuke. Entirely plausible: they could easily have enough weapons grade U235 by now. Rafsenjani - their former president has stated that as soon as they have a bomb - they should use it on Israel. Given that what they have is a crude gun type weapon like the Hiroshima bomb - how do they deliver it? Bomber or other military aircraft? Never get near Israel. By truck, disguised as a shipment of Heroine? Maybe, but too risky. The radiation from the U235 would give it away in any case. Missile attack? Give me a break, what are they going to do, super glue that heavy sucker to the top of a missile? Yeah that's going to work. Perhaps the Iranian Navy will... No that won't work either.

No, the best delivery shot they have is to smuggle it aboard a hi-jacked jumbo jet. Send the plane to Saudi Arabia - at the last second it diverts to Israel. The Israeli Air Force shoots them down - but the bomb detonates when it reaches optimum height.

Could the Iranians pull this off? They have landing strips, suicide pilots, they could refuel a jumbo jet and have it take off. Yes, they could do all of that. Could they get away with it un-noticed? Well, where is that missing Jumbo Jet anyway - somebody made off with it?

Ross MacDonald (real name Kenneth Millar) is a terrific successor to Chandler and IMO even better if that's possible.    The Far Side of the Dollar is I think his best Lew Archer novel (he died in the mid 1980s) and that novel won some major awards too (but I liked it best even before I knew that).    Give him a try you won't be sorry....

I had a theory: Maybe they have the right to the Fletch BOOKS but not the first Fletch FILM so they have to claim, for legal purposes, that they're basing this on the books... when in fact they intend to rip the living shit off of the Fletch movie. But they have to make this claim to lay down their legal defense.
