NASCAR: Race Day in Darlington, SC 4-12-14- [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]
— Open Blogger

I'm still a bit sensitive over all the work I put into last week's post only to have it butt-stomped by a rain-out. Thus, this week, you get the bare minimum.

Misery loves company, eh?

The Duck Commander 500 was a complete washout last Sunday. First it was an hour delay. Then another hour delay. Then another. Finally, they threw their hands up and moved it to noon. On Monday. I didn't see it so I don't have a lot of details to report.

Right off the bat, on lap three, Dale Jr. suffered a fiery crash after crossing into the grass and losing a tire, but he's doing fine and will be participating in the race today. Thank God for that.

The winner of last week's race was Joey Logano, bringing the total to seven different winners in the seven races to date.

Yep. Texas.

This week's race, the Bojangles' Southern 500, will be run on the 1.37 mile track at Darlington with Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano leading the pack after clocking speeds of 183.479 and 183.049 respectively.

Leading the standings at present are Jeff Gordon (259 pts), Matt Kenseth (255 pts), and Carl Edwards (247 pts).

Now, what you really come here for, elbows:

Enjoy the race, folks.

NASCAR should rehire Paige Duke and not be judgmental about her posting pictures of her cute little cooter on the Interwebs.

Go Junior!

I always root for him...and sometimes he has the worst luck.

But he always is a gentleman about it, and doesn't blame anyone else...even when other cars cause him to wreck..

26 Yeah Boss when did that happen?

Posted by: Chavez the Hugo at April 12, 2014 03:03 PM (Q8vlx)

27 Posted by: Boss Moss at April 12, 2014 07:01 PM (bitz6) I have to admit, auto racing is one of two sports I don't watch. Pro basketball being the other one. Oh. And soccer. But that doesn't really count as a sport, does it?

Posted by: grammie winger at April 12, 2014 03:03 PM (oMKp3)

28 I think all Sports threads should be all-Sports threads. I'm wicked Occupy on that point.

Yeah.  It's baseball season.

And if you like metric football, tonight's Indy Eleven game is available on espn3.com.  I've been trying to avoid being interested, but they take their name, logo, and mascot from the 11th Indiana Volunteer Infantry "Zouaves", which was led by Major General Lew Wallace, and that shit is endlessly fascinating.

Posted by: HR at April 12, 2014 03:04 PM (hO8IJ)

29 My big idea for improving racing is have the lead driver's sponsor where the Fox Sport logo is. Nascar is always trying to incentivize the drivers to race harder and, especially, to contest for the lead in the early and middle parts of the race. Right now you get 1 point for leading a lap, and 1 point for leading the most laps in a race. That's not that much of an incentive. And often in long races, guys are content to just hang out in the pack and not push that hard to be leading lap 46 or lap 172 of a 300 lap race. So my idea is whoever is leading gets to have their sponsor nice and clear in the corner of the TV, like where they put the Fox Sports logo. Now that will motivate the drivers to get to the front.

There may be days when I feel like doing so, but this is not that day. Again, please feel free to discuss any sport to your heart's content. I'm sure most here will welcome the variety.

83 There has been an epidemic lately of pitchers going down with torn UCL's and needing Tommy John surgery Tom Seaver says his theory is that pitchers don't throw enough, and the babying with pitch and innings limits might actually be doing more harm than good. Some theorize that college pitchers especially throw too many pitches per start The man pitched 20 years at an average of 250 innings a year, so I give his opinion some weight

95 Posted by: kbdabear at April 12, 2014 07:29 PM (aTXUx) The Texas rangers have required more innings from their pitchers and I know Nolan Ryan is behind another sort of experimental program like that. As far as the college kids go, the programs are all vastly different. I wouldn't be surprised that throwing less often has something to do with that rash of T.J. surgeries. It is correlation, but causation is still speculative. Breaking-pitches from younger kids has also been specualted. The fact remains that the human elbow wasn't made for the stress that curveballs and sliders put on it. Especially at the MPH thrown in MLB.

But Matt Harvey and Steven Strasburg have almost perfect mechanics and an ideal pitchers build and they tore UCLs. Some speculate that Harvey was throwing his slider too hard, it was at 92 mph With the money invested and the premium in MLB on young pitchers who are years away from free agency, MLB is trying to find answers fast

105 "I'll save your seat Slap." ****** HAH! After all that, I think they can still finish second in the N.L. East. There's a lot of talent on that team, plus the kids that are taking the injured pitchers' places aren't chopped liver. They won't overtake the Nationals, but they had a shot before the injuries.

106 so, I saw some cute shirts at the Target earlier, threw a couple of 'em in the cart. one is an XS and fits just fine, roomy and good. the other is a medium and, factoring in the eventual wash and dry, a large would be better. this makes no sense. and, apparently, today is not the day I will cut back on my beer-swillin'. Again. *** There should be a standardization of sizes. The lack of one is the primary reason that I rarely shop online. Although, last month, I went on a big shopping binge and quickly regretted it as I ran to and from between my house, UPS, and USPS returning various items.

I do like the way drag boats look. Lucas Oil has a series. But Lucas Oil has a series in everything with a motor it seems. NHRA seems to have a loyal, core audience. I know Nascar got hit hard by the Great Recession, how did NHRA do? A bunch of Nascar tracks have built drag strips as part of the complex, right? Charlotte, Vegas, not sure who else.

144 To give you an idea of how bad things are in Toledo, the city government is still rending garments over the needlessly expensive beautification project.  The idea was to woo businesses to Lucas County by spending millions of dollars planting flowers.  Did I mention that money came from the road paving budget?  And that the roads in Toledo are pothole marked death courses?  Fun times.

155 Also, the most absurd recent thing was when the new mayor cut off the city credit cards for city employees.  This may sound good, until the details came in:  apparently the charges that led to this ban were buying gas for city vehicles.  Which is to say, the one time that city workers were actually being responsible with taxpayer money causes the mayor to freak out.  The less responsible spending went unremarked upon.  Of course, he didn't actually cut spending, no, Mayor Collins could not do something so responsible.  What he did was just force all city employees to use checks instead.  This increased administrative costs, and made city services even slower and inefficient.  I swear Toledo is the portal to Bizarro World, and there is a shining utopia just a transdimensional jump away.

Bundy told the visibly shaking Sheriff he had one hour to disarm the feds and bring their weapons in. The sheriff left. The hour passed. Bundy then told everyone time was up, lets go get the cows. A crowd of about 300 got into their cars and went to where the cows were relaxing and the BLM told the crowd of to stop or they would shoot. The crowd closed the gap so they said "hold on we'll have the cows up here in a half hour" then all of them piled into 80 vehicles and hauled ass out the back way. Cops blocked traffic on the highway so they could make their getaway without having to merge.

195 So when will a modern Wat the Tyler march upon Sen. Harry 'Dingbat' Reid's office?

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at April 12, 2014 04:35 PM (/8So2)

196 Not going to lie. The whole Bundy saga has been one of the more exciting events I can recall.  Of course, exciting often means dangerous which often means tragic.  There is a reason that living in interesting times is considered a curse in China (at least, that is the way the story is told, I have no idea if it's true).

197 I have driven east on the us 40 for years. Ever see the exit for Amboy? I always wanted to go there. In my feeble mind I alway's thought I would find Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes. A journey to the center of my mind. Ya, look that up.

198 UWP...I did not see the entire day, but watched and waited for the outcome the last two hours. My father had cattle. I have cheered for baby cows since my first rodeo at age four (I stood up and loudly protested the cowboy's chasing the calves and yelled, "Run baby cow, run" per my parents. I have always been a rebel).

The cows died of stress of the helicopter round-up, heat, and probably lack of water, plus being used to "free range" vs corralled by the BLM as domestic terrorists....when the real terrorists on the Mexican border are given water stations! But I digress...they can build a fence, pronto, when they feel like it, can't they?

If you cannot tell this entire thing pisses me off. And may God bless the Americans who stood up to tyranny today. Again, don't trust me, but read the facts not what the media is stating about Bundy. Also, again, read the facts about the land encroachment and theft for the last twenty years as J. Zane Walley reported prior to his massive stroke in 2004 (google his name...as when I saw Bundy's name in the press I remembered reading some stuff about this years ago that Walley wrote). xoxo

199 Didn't Wat Tyler's Peasant Revolt get put down when he was killed by Henry de Despenser during negotiations with the newly crowned Teen King?  I'm sorry Anna, but if someone goes after Reid, I want them to be associated with a more successful effort.

200 I vaguely remember the left foaming at the mouth over the monstrosity of Palin hunting predators via whirlybird.

201 194 I had thought all along today that this is just Round 1. However, it was pointed out that folks were beginning to question the Searchlight Pederast's role as well as his Son in all this, and that may have been a major factor in getting them to retreat.

204 I watched the Bundy saga on live feed all day. Basicly the sheriff came out of his week in hiding to tell Bundy that the feds were going to leave. Bundy told the visibly shaking Sheriff he had one hour to disarm the feds and bring their weapons in. The sheriff left. The hour passed. Bundy then told everyone time was up, lets go get the cows. *** If this is true, I don't like the sound of it. Not one little bit.

207 When I started following it this morning I noticed some pretty credible comments from some people on the Internets talking about loading up and going there today. My suspicion is that the NSA or whoever saw this and thought - shit, there's like 10,000 people going to converge onto us this weekend. We need to GTFO now. Also supposedly Fox reported traffic was backed up all the way to Vegas with people headed there.

208 so anyway, in a rare break from my usual, I'm actually watching the Darlington race. I haven't watched NASCAR in years, I love the in car cameras. It troubles me that the drivers look to be encased in a "exo-skeleton". doG, I'm old enough to remember seeing Davey Allison smoking a cigarette whilst driving down the front straight at Daytona on Wide World of Sports...

211 No matter what you think about the situation, Mr.Bundy and his supporters used a cartridge box veto of the whole shebang.

My guess is that will be a feature instead of a bug in the future.

214 Well I was thinking of the whole concept of peasants en masse on the move storming a center of power.  Or we could talk in Les Mis terms.  Or the mob scene from Battleship Potemkin.

It is true the cowboys were told by BLM they were going to shoot to kill if they did not back off. It is true that some yahoo from Nevada told Utah ranchers to "have funeral plans" if they came to the Bundy ranch. With that and 80 plus cars and men with guns/vests and helmets, I'd say they had considered deadly force until either the Reid story backed them off or the fact that no matter how much cell feed they cut it was being recorded and witnessed by a growing group of Americans.

It was either kill them all or regroup...and that is what I think they have done. I do not think this is over. Right now, in DC, the WH and a legal team are madly figuring out how to win this. For the desert tortoise, who I will now, forevermore, link with the name Reid. He has been quietly making money off the backs of these Nevadans for as long as he has been in office...like a desert tortoise, but a scavenger like an opossum.

We're evil conservatives.   Aren't we supposed to be thinking in terms of the charge at the climax of Birth of a Nation?

222 Love the NASCAR thread, wasn't able to get in earlier and now I find it's all the other sport crap I don't give a shit about you can get anywhere on the goddamned planet.

Posted by: whatmeworry? at April 12, 2014 07:36 PM (dZGNV)

223 Kevin Harvick first pole to checkers winner at Darlington in 24 races. Don't care for him personally but he had the best car and persevered through three late cautions to win. Dale Earnhardt Jr. had a good shot. My driver Kyle Busch should probably have wrecked his car earlier for any chance to win, he loves beat up cars. The thing about NASCAR I missed until I got older is it really is an all out team effort coupled with good luck and strategy that determines who wins and win the modern rules you can't rule out folks even if they lose a lap or even two early they can gamble and come back.
