NYC DeBlasio Takes On His Most Implacable Foe: Children
— Ace

Failure will be subsidized, and success will be ruthlessly stamped out.

Success Academy is run by Eva Moscowitz, someone hated by the teachers unions and the left. So of course she must be destroyed, and if there is some collateral damage in the form of children, so be it. Such things happen in war.

What a small and politically vicious man New York's new mayor is. Bill de Blasio doesn't like charter schools. They are too successful to be tolerated. Last week he announced he will drop the ax on three planned Success Academy schools. (You know Success Academy: It was chronicled in the film "Waiting for Superman." It's one of the charter schools the disadvantaged kids are desperate to get into.) Mr. de Blasio has also cut and redirected the entire allotment for charter facility funding from the city's capitol budget. An official associated with a small, independent charter school in the South Bronx told me the decision will siphon money from his school's operations. He summed up his feelings with two words: "It's dispiriting."

Some 70,000 of the city's one million students, most black or Hispanic, attend charter schools, mostly in poorer neighborhoods. Charter schools are privately run but largely publicly financed. Their teachers are not unionized. Their students usually outscore their counterparts at conventional public schools on state tests. Success Academy does particularly well. Last year 82% of its students passed citywide math exams. Citywide the figure was 30%.

These are schools that work. They are something to be proud of and encourage.

...

We close with a little red meat because there's something in this story—frightened children, cold political operators—that gets our blood up.

...

In this move more than any so far, Mr. de Blasio shows signs he is what his critics warned he would be—a destructive force in the city of New York. When a man says he will raise taxes to achieve a program like pre-K education, and is quickly informed that that program can be achieved without raising taxes, and his answer is that he wants to raise taxes anyway, that man is an ideologue.

And ideologues will sacrifice anything to their ideology. Even children.

There's a lot more at the link.

Meanwhile, Governor Cuomo is holding a rally with.. Eva Moscowitz.

De BlasioÂ’s rally in support of a higher tax on wealthy New Yorkers was not specifically targeted at education, but across town, Andrew Cuomo joined Success Academy CEO Eva Moskowitz at a different rally promoting charter schools. Although de Blasio downplayed the significance of the charter rally, itÂ’s a big deal. Moskowitz is his chief opponent in the charter school co-location fight. Indeed, de Blasio specifically mentioned the need to reduce MoskowitzÂ’s influence as a reson for the policy shift, and Moskowitz has responded with plenty of harsh words of her own. By appearing at the rally, Cuomo effectively endorsed de BlasioÂ’s biggest rival. And heÂ’s not just a silent partner; he spoke forcefully about the need to protect charter schools. . . .

More at Mead, who calls NY state the chief battleground in the war on charter schools, where their fate will be determined in a struggle between the liberal coalition's moderate/liberal wings, and its leftist wing -- the tail that now actually wags the dog.

She has "Moscow" right there in her name for crying out loud. It would be like Chris Christie launching a crusade against a woman named "Louise Donutwitz".

This issue particularly infuriates me. My daughter teaches at a charter school in the south Bronx, in the poorest CD in the country. Her kids tell her school is the best part of their day. My daughter is phenomenal with children. She spent years looking for a teaching job, getting her Masters and keeping her accreditations up to date. And she may be out of a job because this commies scumsucker wants to play politics with the lives of the poorest children in the city? He should diaf.

115 There is a simple reason that the Liberals/Democratic Party do not want charter schools, school choice, vouchers, or what have you for poor children.  They do not want them to be educated.  An educated person is far less likely to stay on their plantation and vote correctly, gasp, they might even become a Conservative.

116 I'd say signing a kid up for the charter school, and doing the extra work involved to keep up, means the parent actually gives a fuck about getting a good education for their kid. Yep. This plays at least some role in the relative success of charter schools. That's not to take away from what charter schools do, but if one school is filled with kids who have concerned parents, and an identical school is full of kids having parents who don't give a shit, it's obvious which will perform better. In the case of the latter, the undisciplined kids with shitty parents don't just perform badly themselves, they help drag the rest of the class down with them.

123 Whenever de Blasio comes out with some new horror / fuckup, people trot out the whole "you voted it in, you deserve it" argument. Which is certainly true to a point ... but it's worth remembering a whole lot of this is down to there being ZERO Republican power in most of NYC. Our nominee against de Blasio was Joe Lhota, who was dead the moment he took the nomination. Why? Because a) he was from the Transit Authority, which everyone in the city despises now and forever because of the endless fare hikes on the subway, and b) because he was a bland charisma void who was dumb enough to compare the Port Authority police to mall cops in public. Add to that the Anthony Wiener circus which ensured none of the Democrat candidates got any kind of vetting or airing of views, and there was simply no way the D nominee was losing this year. I didn't even bother to vote, the slaughter was so apparent -- and that was the first election I skipped in 14 years. (I'm proud to say I live in the only borough where de Blasio actually *lost* ... and by a pretty fair margin, too. Of course, the rest of the city abominates us anyway. Such is life in Richmond County.)

Hawaii actually has a higher high school graduation rate than NY (comprehensively).

But the reason NY as a state is dragged down is due to the ridiculously low number in NYC. Ranked alone, NYC is one of the worst in the nation.

There are other districts in the suburbs that are mostly in the high 90%'s. That is the only reason NY isn't at the bottom.

163 That's not to take away from what charter schools do, but if one school is filled with kids who have concerned parents, and an identical school is full of kids having parents who don't give a shit, it's obvious which will perform better. This is so true not just in charter schools. My kids are transfer students into a small in-demand district next to the large, crappy city district. It is interesting to observe that many of the overachiever kids and their go-getter parents are transfer students. It takes extra work to make sure your kids are accepted and stay accepted into this district--and then those parents are way overrepresented in the volunteer, PTA and booster club pools. Likewise those kids are the ones making it into the gifted classes and excel in extracurriculars. Meanwhile the kids who are lucky enough to live in the district often bounce along in the lower-quartile and their parents can't be arsed to get involved at school, perpetuating the mediocrity. I've honestly yet to see a school system with reasonable competent staff and parents who GAS--emphasis on that--not produce reasonably successful students. Parents who get involved and take school seriously produce kids who take school seriously. Funny, that.

178 I love charter school but on the topic of pushing for them - its good to temper the comparisons in test scores. Charter schools here in NYC get a big boost in test scores because parents have to choose to put their kid in them - basically you have students much more willing to study and learn with parental support. I think thats a good thing to get these kids away from the punks that don't give a crap and fuck everyones education, but if every school was a charter school you'd still probably see a larger failure rate because the kids of morons would have to go somewhere.

185 >True, but they've also elected republican mayors >for the last 20 years. Republicans and RINOs >anyway. DeBlasio isn't the prototypical NYC >mayor. Kensington's point is perfectly valid, though. The only reason we got Giuliani was the fact Dinkins's mayoralty saw the *worst* spike in crime in the city's history ... and this coming at the tail end of the grotesque decline of the 70s and 80s. Dinkins's last year in office saw over 2000 homicides. It was elect a law-and-order guy or watch the city finish turning into Thunderdome. Dinkins was also incredibly hapless -- Koch's reign wasn't a whole lot better, but he could spar with the press like a maniac and seemed to have at least a patina of leadership. Dinkins was a disaster from day one. Oh, and under which mayor did de Blasio begin his career? And which mayor does de Blasio think was much better than history has judged? Why, David Dinkins, naturally. Lhota had no chance, but I sometimes think if the Wiener rigmarole hadn't dominated the election news the Dems might have nominated someone marginally better. (The previous front-runner being Christine Quinn ... well, I did say *marginally* better.)

Bloomberg was not really a Republican, and everybody knew it. He had been a Democrat for 40 years and only ran as a Republican so that he wouldn't have to compete with the other Democrats. And, Hell, he couldn't even maintain the pretense for his full term before declaring himself an Independent.

211 Republicans could have easily passed a federal voucher program when they last had control, it wouldn't even need 60 votes in the Senate because it's a budget item.

Imagine something like a $5k tax credit for private school tuition, and allow other people to give "scholarships" that can also get a tax credit.

AZ has a similar system, I give money to friends/family members schools that have their child attend  and I get a dollar for dollar tax credit towards my state income taxes and that money goes to their tuition.  The teachers union hates it, but it's become incredibly popular.

This would take control away from the DeBlasio's of the world, and who knows, maybe the GOP could make real gains in minority communities.

They're being awfully understanding. They're saying you have to appreciate that compared with his political base, the mayor is really staking out a middle ground. He is not going as far as the progressive left wants him to. It's not the job of liberals to explain that away. It's their job to oppose it, because this move against charter schools is an opening feint, a showing of mood, and a sign of things to come The nice liberals of New York are sounding on this very much like frightened French aristocrats in 1792: "You have to understand, Marat is pretty ideological and we're lucky he's only cutting off our ears and nose and not our heads." No, he came for their heads later."

Perhaps a better way to put it is that the educational establishment has designed a system where competence is of marginal importance.

Whether you are a good or bad teacher in a public school won't have a lot of impact on your life (compared to say a good or bad software engineer). So there are good public school teachers, but the bad ones that should be forced out aren't and the average ones have little reason to try harder outside of a personal moral vision...

Is he going to do anything substantial?  He is the Governor.  There is probably state property in New York City that he could make available to the Charter schools.  He could probably get legislation to redirect state funds that would otherwise go to fund DiBlasio's pet projects or favorite cronies and use that to support the charter schools.

Cuomo could create something like TAMS at Potsdam, Plattsburgh or Oswego to offer a way out for some kids.

Who didn't run on race and income level politics. Who was white. Hopefully NYC doesn't take 40 years and a bankruptcy to figure this out. And I can sympathize with the NYC folks who DIDN"T vote for this communist. A few years ago Bill Gates sponsored a survey of the American education system.  They concluded that the quality of the average teacher in the US is pretty good.  They also concluded that having an exceptionally good or an exceptionally bad teacher can make a big difference in outcome.

Their recommendation was that the worst 15% of teachers should be fired and replaced with average teachers.  Given the number of unemployed people with teaching certificates, that really shouldn't be all that hard to do.  Oh, yeah.  Unions.

309 De Blasio represents the full flowering of the leftist ideal. His cruel and clumsy diktats hurt more people more quickly and more directly than even TFG. It took three years for the citizens to feel the true sting of Obamacare, but De Blasio is closing their kids' schools right now.

You know what comes after a full flowering? The whole plant rots and dies. So be it for the Left.

310 The problem is that these morons who voted for Kaiser Wilhelm are too stupid to realize they have to vote for someone else if they want their precious widdle ones to keep going to their charter schools.

311 I do not know if New York City is worth saving.  I think that mega cities like NYC are not sustainable.

However, it would seem to me that a way to fund these charter schools privately and show their success to the world would have a leveraging effect.  The schools would help to raise up those children to be come educated and just may make some positive changes, breaking the cycle of stupidy, and making independent thinkers.

And in other way, people can stick it to this narcissistic and corrupt leader who likes to destroy rather than build.

312 Cuomo is worried DeBlasio is gonna turn into another John Lindsay, drive NYC into a deep fiscal hole which the state will have to bail them out of.

Quite likely it is,too.
