Religion is a culture of faith; science is a culture of doubt.
― Richard P. Feynman

A society that puts equality before freedom will get neither. A society that puts freedom before equality will get a high degree of both.
― Milton Friedman

One of the most striking differences between a cat and a lie is that a cat has only nine lives.
― Samuel Langhorne Clemens

Asexuals (aces, for short) do not experience sexual attraction to other people in the way that non-ace folks do. Some people confuse this for abstinence or celibacy, or situations when people don't want sex because of some trauma they might have experienced. Though an ace person of course is not immune from negative experiences around sex, that's not at all the same as experiencing no attraction. And you can abstain from sex and still want to have it--so that's not ace either.

Basically, some people are wired to lust after their fellow humans, and aces probably are not.

"Confused about blockchain? If you are, you’re not the only one. Multiple surveys have shown that while the general perception of blockchain technology is largely positive, most people don’t really understand what it is or how it works."

I thought this was amazing...A series of photos from WWII, and the corresponding modern scenes.

I vaguely remember these guys when they first appeared in the Bay Area. They called themselves Ska-Punk. Whatever. It's sort of fun, but I don't vouch for anything except this song.

If our republic is to be saved, it is through the aggressive application of exactly this sort of thing, using the power reserved for the states to protect whatever may be left of American Exceptionalism, the Constitution, and traditional values.

Pence returns to MAGA world with Trump-backed political group

Yeah...sure. President Trump's "endorsement" is tepid stuff.

"It was the most successful first term in American history,” he said in a statement sent to the Washington Examiner. "Nice to see Mike highlighting some of our many achievements!”

Be still my heart!

26 Religion is faith..... that's the non-thinker's easy dismissal of that which has been witnessed, recorded in history by thousands, preserved in time by fragments of documents, and witnessed by the eye in the daily basis.
It requires faith to believe that something came from nothing, that a massive, unobserved universal explosion organized its by-products into a complex, orderly system that could even be quantified, from which, at random sprung life from non-life (spontaneous generation) that then itself evolved into through millions of years into a more complex life form that has more difficulty reproducing, requires greater energy input, and can be killed by the original unicellular organisms via the process of natural selection.

I don't know, because while I have had a few Rainiers in the last recent years, and it tastes the same, I haven't tried the others.  I saw a tavern serving Hamm's a few years ago, but I was drinking micro brews.
BTW, a Hamm's bar sign is very valuable if it is in good shape.  Top dollar, and it doesn't even have to be neon, just a lit sign with the Bear and a lake.

76 That flight sim doesn't do wing bending and torsion right. Also, the fuse is much more flexible than that, vertical bending wise and torsion between wing and empennage. And main gears don't deflect enough. And besides, they all have calibrated shear pins on mains to prevent them from penetrating up into fuel bays at greater than ultimate load or rupturing wetted bulkheads. They would have left their gear on the ground after the first impact.

Some of those look like when I screw up my aero model orientation x vs z and my control law starts pushing the aircraft through the ground in order to speed it up. I find this after a half-hour of computing time. All wasted.

It's more than that, though you're right in all that you say.

Most atheists/rank and file lefties are not even aware of the state of the sciences in this era.

Darwinian evolution is known - KNOWN - to be not just insufficient to generate complex life - but actively detrimental to it.

The Big Bang is looked upon as a PROBLEM by the high echelons of particle physicists/cosmologists.  They do their best to avoid the idea, tossing out foolish, desperate ideas such as the Landscape, or quantum cosmology, in which a de Sitter universe quantum tunneled into our universe and birthing it that way.

Most atheists and agnosts argue now from data points and philosophical positions that are literally decades out of date, and they don't know it, because they aren't actually invested in the science of our time.  It is as Ace said - they love science only insofar as it brings them validation for their degeneracy.

100 The Feynman quote is incorrect. All of the religious people I know wrestle with doubt at one point or another. I think the quote is something that scientists want to believe about themselves, but it's easily falsifiable.

If there is one thing that I wish I could teach everyone on the planet, it is that.

Scientists are fallible human beings, prone to all the manias and errancies that any other man or woman are susceptible to.  Believing this to not be the case, they declare science "self-correcting" - as they sit in ever-growing echo chambers, and the sciences, and our culture, stagnate and fester.

Men who believe themselves more intelligent than others are also uniquely vulnerable to blind spots in reasoning and judgement, specifically because they think too highly of their own intellect.  It'd be funny, if it weren't so damaging to the civilization.

Depending somewhat on what  you mean by "Darwinian Evolution", this is at best an impressive rhetorical overstatement . At the very least, there isn't much scientific debate (ie none) on the reality of common descent by modification through deep  time.

And they do it with aplomb.  At this point, they do it gleefully.  If the data doesn't fit the hypothesis - in this case, THERE IS NO CREATOR OF ALL THINGS - they thereafter invent alternate universes that they themselves acknowledge are unobservable and untestable, positing that the laws of existence, the cosmological constant, physics as a whole, have 10^500 or greater possible combinations and since all of them are possible, surely they all have happened somewhere, and since they all happened somewhere, obviously fine-tuning was not needed to make the universe, and since no fine-tuning was needed, there is no need for God, and since there is no need for God...!

The sciences as a whole have a death rictus grin plastered on their collective faces, unable to advance or retreat, stuck in debating antiquated mechanisms and phenomena that have not only failed under all subsequent examination, but been proven destructive to the theories they were originally designed to extol.

How is it that this still goes on?  I pray constantly for God to do something dramatic, and open our eyes, as a people, to the shameful ignorance masquerading as Ultimate Truth in academia.  I hate it all.  I hope I live to see it come crumbling down.

The sciences as a whole have a death rictus grin plastered on their collective faces, unable to advance or retreat, stuck in debating antiquated mechanisms and phenomena that have not only failed under all subsequent examination, but been proven destructive to the theories they were originally designed to extol.

I can't speak for the  sciences in general, but I can tell you cell and molecular biology, materials sciences, neuroscience and computational disciplines  are going right bananas now. Not a rictus in sight. Just a lot of people worried about falling behind or moving too fast.

199 Depending somewhat on what you mean by "Darwinian Evolution", this is at best an impressive rhetorical overstatement . At the very least, there isn't much scientific debate (ie none) on the reality of common descent by modification through deep time.

Posted by:Alcoholic Asshole Shut Inat April 07, 2021 10:35 PM (jhfQJ)

It is not only not rhetorical overstatement, common descent itself is an antiquated idea that is being supplanted by newer ideas such as "the web of life".

Darwinian evolution has many problems, the most prominent of them being that it fails to account for the initial infusion of specified complexity necessary to start the first working organism.  This is not a problem that can be gotten about by desperate evasions about "reducing atmospheres" or "RNA worlds".

The cell is not a bag of protoplasm, it is an exceedingly intricate machine that makes the advances of man's science look like foolishness.  Life is machinery.  To replicate the machine, you need machinery, transcription equipment, code reading, code splicing  (DNA is not read as a single transcript through and through, it has breaks.  It can be read forward and backward.  It can be read by skipping X number of genes at a time in order to modify surface-level instructions from the first pass-through of the ribosome.

No accounting of the origin of life via Darwinian mechanisms can stand, because mutation is, as its most basic level, changes to the transcript of an organism's code.  To mutate, the code must first have said something to begin with, and, to mutate successfully, the organism must have been functional enough to begin with to survive the addition of an error in DNA transcription.

Whence the initial information?

The fuselage bulkheads that interface with the ground skids blocks and those parts of the fuselage forward and aft of the wing box would suffer non-linear deformation and structural failure. That is nonsense.Darwin never claimed to explain the generation of complex structures. He discussed and presented a hypothesis that would explain speciation...the differences between species.

Posted by:CharlieBrown'sDildoat April 07, 2021 10:40 PM (Q9lwr)

I am a little fascinated at the categorical ignorance of that claim.

Restated, you are saying that Darwin was not seeking to explain the origin of life, or the origin of speciation.... in his On the Origin of Species?

That all of the subsequent arguments about Life and Its Origin were all fallout that Darwin not only did not himself consider, but remained in happy ignorance of?

Someone should tell the Neo-Darwinists, apparently they had it wrong all these years.  They'll be relieved to have the matter cleared up.

The thing is, the math works.  They don't need to invent anything; the math works.  If the math didn't work, we wouldn't have diode lasers and deep sub-micron integrated circuits and similar technology.

A long time ago, in Wichita KS there was a yearly city-wide party called the River Festival. And back in the early days you'd just sit out by the river with your 10's thousands of Wichita friends watching people do fun stuff in the river. One thing was the bathtub races. Where groups had to make some sort of floating contraption out of a cast-iron bathtub and race it down the river. My favorite team growing up was the "Lubrication Engineers" because of the name. I think it was an actual company name there but I'm not sure.

River Festival time was one of the happiest memories of my teenage years. I think, later, it changed to concerts and films and crap and not so much the river. But in its simpler days it was the best.

The upper limit is a chosen designed-in arbitrary value meant to prevent one feature of fiat currencies like ours. Namely, the tendency to mint more currency in order to shift the burden of our elite's monetary failures onto the back of the peasantry.

I'm not sure if it's arrived at through the hash power needed to generate more blocks becoming infinite or if it's just a hard number and when it's reached mining is no longer valid.

314 Part of the issue with science is that it's advocates fancy themselves the penultimate field of study.

How grandma died is no more or less important than what it means that grandma died.

Pure science can be useful, not quite as useful as math, but still useful, when it limits itself to what it can actually ascertain.

The problem is that the practitioners of science believe that they are able to cover all relevant fields of study. But that which is outside of the physical realm is real, it's of paramount importance, and holds just the same place in the world of rational thought that science does.

People tend to brush away the major philosophical and metaphysical fields of study as if they are somehow subservient to the tangible.

Even more frustrating is that Darwin himself wrote that his theory was wrong if any biological system could be found that was "irreducibly complex", i.e., could not have evolved from a simpler form. He was writing at a time when science believed that matter was made up of very simple "plasm", and had no idea that the simplest biological organism, even the simplest cell, is so complex and made from so many individual parts that there hasn't been time since the universe was created 13.8 billion years ago for even a tiny percentage of the organism to have been organized through the mechanics of Darwin's theory.

And, of course, the very specific digital code that makes up DNA and RNA didn't self organize itself, either. Both of Dr. Meyer's books I referenced above, Signature in the Cell and Darwin's Doubt explain in exquisite and excruciating mathematical detail.

In fact, it's pretty much a given now that every system and subsystem of the human body is "irreducibly complex". I'd point to Dr. Jon Lieff's recent book called "The Secret Language of Cells", in which he demonstrates such complexity that I am almost convinced that life is sentient at the cellular level, at a minimum, and at the molecular level at maximum.

The key problem with the irreducible complexity argument is that evolution is perfectly capable of producing irreducibly complex mechanism.  Mutations don't always add complexity, they can change the mechanism without changing its complexity, and they can also delete elements, reducing its complexity.

The key problem with the irreducible complexity argument is that evolution is perfectly capable of producing irreducibly complex mechanism.  Mutations don't always add complexity, they can change the mechanism without changing its complexity, and they can also delete elements, reducing its complexity.

I would recommend Dr. Meyer's books to you. Neo-Darwinian evolution is much more limited in its ability to create complexity or different forms, or to delete forms than most people think, and a very large number of scientists who used to believe in it are coming to recognize that it isn't a very good theory at all. Thomas Nagel, an atheist who wrote "Mind and Cosmos: Why the Materialist Neo-Darwinian Conception of Nature is Almost Certainly False" is a prominent example.

Evolution as a theory is fine when you are talking about limited changes to already existing body forms. When you are talking about the origin of first life, the creation of completely new body forms, and DNA/RNA's complexity and creation, Darwinian evolution has none of the powers of creation that are attributed to it by its most vocal adherents, like Dawkins.

And when you are talking about the origin of the universe, even Hawking had to cheat and use imaginary time in his calculations, ignored his own theory that the universe had a beginning in a singularity, and rhetorical slight of hand to be able to say that the "laws of physics caused the universe to create itself spontaneously."

Her specialty was French Women Writers/Women's Studies and she had a theory that the legal underpinnings of the Napoleonic Code circa 1835 would support "misogyny" in general and a specific crime mentioned in papers of that era so she sent me to research the relevant law and I came back with not only "no" but "hell no!"  The law of the era was more chivalrous than misogynic. My research assistantship was not renewed.

368    Fixed wing flight on Mars is also possible, but the flight envelope will be Very Different, of course. One day, if we get there, we'll be flying planes on Mars.  Power source will be problem. Can't burn fuel without bringing your own oxidizer on board along with the fuel.
Martian gravity is ~ 1/3 g, so a given mass would need only 1/3 the lift, but inertia is the same of course.
That latter would make driving a car feel different on Mars as well.
IIRC, some of the flight simulator games/programs out there have a Mars flight simulator built in, allowing one to play with that (simulated) feel.

372 ok, well, Nagel has some doubts about evolution as an explanatory paradigm because biological systems are so historically contingent that the mode of explanation isn't powerful enough to let us know the answers to really interesting questions: the complexity is so great and the specifics of history so important that the facts needed to explain specific facts about a current system may be simply unknowable, except as conjecture. However, he ALSO does not think that an interventionist deity provides good  explanatory power. Nagel also does not think that evolutionary biology is wrong, just that there might be a better way to go about it, that  he doesn't manage to define. I mean, even Mike Behe says the evidence for a common ancestor of men and chimpanzees is, from a biological POV, pretty much irrefutable. There is simply no real scientific debate on the basic idea of descent with modification through deep time.  There's lots of arguments and controversies, but that main idea is pretty well regarded right now.

Just sayin'. Dawkins and Meyer pretty much deserve each other, from my POV.

She doesn't seem to be in complete panic (I've seen that), which she would be as if this contract falls apart it the blame will probably fall largely on her and given the service community the contract is in she will lose a lot of face, maybe not completely unemployable, but certainly not any sort of leadership employable.
Plus the person who first got the contract is someone my current boss greatly seems to have that jealous resentment toward, and her failing where the other rousingly succeeded will eat at her the rest of her life.
I on the other hand will miss the job as it has been very accommodating with my treatment stuff, and I am not sure how easy it'd be to find another as open.

378 One of the things that's difficult to wrap the mind around, right when those pics were taken there was a massive operation to scoop up German scientists - not just rocket scientists, under operation known as "paperclip". I get why they did it, but it is really bizarre if you drill down into the details. Thousands were able to bypass immigration laws, they weren't low level Nazis by any stretch, and conversely many refugees were denied admittance to the US. Also chemical warfare specialists. A lot of those guys developed nasty weapons, and also "psychhotropic" drugs, and were one reason why the CIA was dosing anybidy everybody with LSD and MDA and golly knows what else. Communists and Nazis were imported wholesale into America. Sure explains a lot, I guess.

Seems to me that free balloons would be an ideal way to get reams of low-altitude air photos of the Martian surface, if they still have a working Mars Orbiter. Turn them loose during episodes of different wind directions, and equipt them to drop ballast and/or valve off hydrogen to maintain their desired altitude. When the Orbiter comes over the horizon, they could squirt up a big data dump, and carry on taking photos, or even video.

As creepy as it sounds, the basics are what is her criminal background (if any) and does it look like previous relationships ended in complete tire burning chaos (bad feeling are one thing, trying to send ex to jail for imagined stuff another).
The rest of the stuff- how do you two line up on things like spending or wanting more kids- is what you explore during a relationship (absolutely pre-marriage though, but on the first date is a sign). Outside of her bringing a voodoo doll of her ex's to every marriage or obsessing over how they all wronged her all the time "Major warning signs" can vary.

This seems a lot tougher.
Takeoff. Getting enough speed for sufficient lift.  Processing fast enough upon landing to do it autonomously. Helicopter is nice since the rotors can spin like hell without the body moving.

You all are overlooking what I imagine was one of the biggest challenges of the helicopter - cooling the bearings and motor. without air, I'll bet that is their biggest concern and first failure mode.

We're talking ~Mach 0.65 - 0.70. They found some optimum airfoil shapes for this Mach range, I saw as I was skimming the info over.
Flight on Mars is in the "high Mach, low Reynolds number regime"

389 Of course a significant number of German POWs also returned after the war, many marrying women they met while "prisoners" here.  Most camps had work-release situations that ended up creating prolonged contact with locals, and out of this many German POWs figured out that the USA wasn't a bad place compared to Europe.

Recommend a video documentary on UToob about the Concordia, Kansas POW camp.  I think there's another good one on the camp at Aliceville, Alabama.

A pair of young POWs at the Windsor, California camp (beautiful Sonoma area) "escaped" one day - they headed west for the coast, because they wanted to see the Pacific.  They got there.  County went nuts.  Cops sheriffs etc. everywhere.  They found them on the beach, where they happily "surrendered", having completed their mission.  Prisoners at this camp told how they would have to wake their "guards" who were napping while they were picking fruit or whatever, when it was time to go back to the camp.  All in all, compared to hand/hand fighting in the sewers and rubble of Stalingrad, pretty good "duty".

Then if things work for you they do. Nothing wrong with that, and I've seen people seemingly check all the "right" boxes and it go astray while others seem to be a question from the start but both people continue to work on it and it moves along. As long as no one involved is broken or expecting the other to be more than they are (that would include you ) and are willing to put in the work then those seem to be the ones that last.

Another thing to consider: these photos were all taken in 1944, in the early days/weeks of the D-Day invasion. The war was far from over. The Germans knew they were being photographed. They were probably under orders from their officers to not show evidence of relief upon being captured. The Gestapo or SS would likely make it very hard for any of the poor bastards seen grinning in such pics, had there been a successful German counter-attack, and the POW's released.

411 Sigh... I'll get this right eventually.
Mentioned this in an earlier thread, but there appears to be an effort under way to cancel Rilly Famous Computer Science Dude Jeffrey Ullman (among many other acomplishments, he wrote one of the most popular texts on compilers).
It seems that some years ago, Professor Ullman pointed out that the government of Iran is made up of barbaric murdering savages.
There was some effort to "cancel" him at the time, but Stanford apparently had more balls back then than a typical university does now, and told the mob to go fuck itself.
Recently Ullman has been given the Turing Award (basically the Nobel Prize for Computer Science), leading to a resurgence in attempts to "cancel" him.
It remains to be seen whether it will succeed this time.

It's not impossible, but love at first sight feels more like putting an image on someone, cause you can't know someone at first sight. I mean, you could be an ax murderer for all she knows (of course if you've known her for sometime before dating a little of this can be taken into account).
But "I love you" sounds nicer than "I lust for you" in terms of trying to build more than a "with benefits" relationship.

469 Yep. Every war movie made (practically) is very unrealistic (obviously) but ... especially so when it comes to artillery or cannon fire. They are designed to be "air bursts" or blow up in the air, bit this is way too dangerous for filming with actors on the field. So we always see bayonet charges and the ground blowing up. But that explains the wide helmets, no?

I'm very sorry to see this. But it's nothing to do with you. It's the new normal for companies, even as they become more Woke, to shed their older employees because their health insurance is too expensive or they're perceived as not being flexible enough to fit in to our new diverse and inclusive work culture. Same thing happened separately to Her Majesty and me.

544 About Feynman, strange how many of the culture of faith made so many scientific contributions. One might even say, produced the scientific revolution. Perhaps it has something to do with honesty, as in 'Thou shall not lie', without which no 'science' can be done. And perhaps faith in one thing does not preclude doubt in others.
Feynman's quote may be a 'bon mot' but it really is based upon a false equivalency (or should it be called on a 'category error').  It does show how intelligent people can be so stupid.
