9 I can't see a single one of the pictures, and I haven't heard any reply to the e-mail I sent off pointing that out. I am using Comodo Dragon as my browser, and the error message I am getting reads: "You don't have permission to access /Windows-Live-Writer/Overnight-Ope_F953/ultwars_3.jpg on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request." Any ideas?

Either way I was low with every single shot, about 3 inches at 15-25 feet. Good news was that after going almost 2 years since my first and only pistol live fire, I put 18 of 20 shots within the 9 ring at 15 feet, and at 25 feet with head shots I had only one graze, two in the left collarbone, and the rest either insta-kill or incapacitating. Gonna try another 50-100 rounds tomorrow and try aiming slightly higher, though my ego claims I need to lower the rear sight instead. Hard to know without a bench I suppose.

Years ago when I had a subscription to National Review, they did an article about famine being caused by excess food.

There point was, that US grain donations were financially wiping out local farmers in impoverished areas.  Areas such as Eritrea which used to be the breadbasket of the region, were now incapable of growing much of anything.

Why pay farmers when you can get food for free?

I think most of those donations to fight poverty end up in the pockets of the local powers, and very little does any good for the target population.  What we need to export to these people are ideas and principles.  That is the only thing which will raise them out of poverty.

190 more on his money In 1992, Geldof co-founded Planet 24, a television production company that has made such programmes as The Big Breakfast, The Word and Survivor. In 1994, the company was sold to Carlton Television for an estimated $7 million, while the rights to Survivor were retained. He then launched an online travel business, which sold in 2001 for an estimated $17 million. His company Ten Alps Communications is a media, entertainment and marketing venture in which he retains 8%.[4] A subsidiary of Ten Alps creates 'branded environments' and has worked for BP, JP Morgan, EMI, Disney, FHM, L'oreal, the British Ministry of Defence, GlaxoSmithKline, Microsoft and the British Foreign Office. to be clear, I do not begrudge him his success. At all. But it pisses me off to be scolded by an entertainer who demands I support their cause with my money who doesn't use their own vastly larger resources to do the same

191 "every asshole has a foundation you are supposed to give to, but how much of these vanity projects actually do any good? very very few"

I would aver that the vast majority of charitable "foundations" have actually produced huge net negative social effects.

The Ford Foundation alone has poured metric shit-tons of cash into the coffers of the institutional left for decades. Funding the sort of people who would have, had they had their druthers, locked up Henry Ford as a dangerous maniac. Cars for everyone? Madness! WE should have cars, as we perform socially important roles. The proles should have buses and trains. If that.

Oh, and speaking of assholes with foundations, note that the new HHS Secretary has time in grade at the Gates Foundation (assholes), the Walmart Foundation (assholes), and the Nike Foundation (assholes).

We're in the very best of hands.

196 more on Geldoff During mid-November 2008, a local for-profit organisation Diversity@Work invited Geldof to Melbourne, to speak about Third World poverty and the failure of governments to combat the crisis. However, it was subsequently revealed that he was paid A$100,000 for his one-off speech which included a luxury hotel room and first-class airfares. Criticism has been raised at the contradiction of demanding such fees to speak on world poverty and human misery

Posted by: thunderb at April 10, 2014 10:21 PM (zOTsN)

A point I often make is that back in the 19th century, Actors were regarded mostly as low life gutter trash fit only to consort with whores, gamblers and thieves. Their audiences were only so large as the hall they could rent, and their money was likewise limited.

Motion pictures allowed them to leverage their money and influence asymmetrically, and suddenly they could command influence and money  to which actors had never before been able.

Television expanded their earnings and influence even more.

So now today we have a large cadre of twits who play make believe for a living giving the rest of us grief for our insistence on living in the real world instead of their make believe fantasy.

They are still low life scum, but now they have power and money.

Quite.

Anyone who has spent any time in the Third World -- the real, squalid, ugly, dangerous, corrupt Third World, not the glossy Club Med resort version -- has seen, in dirt-floored markets, food and medical aid packages marked "GIFT OF THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, NOT FOR RESALE" being resold.

It's weird that entertainment celebrities, who will haggle down to the last hundredth of a decimal point at contract time because, y'know, you can't trust some people, will then turn around and endorse these "aid" circuses where nearly all of the aid material is obviously ending up diverted for private profit.

One begins to wonder about kickbacks.

A third of the locals are tacit sympathizers. Another third are overt sympathizers. For the muzzies to target this area would be a huge own-goal.

Besides, SFO is slowly grinding to a halt on its own, thanks to its own poor design and pervasive operational incompetence.

Need I mention that it was at SFO that the first responders to the Asiana crash ran over and crushed to death a Chinese honor student who had lived through the impact, been ejected from the fuselage, and was lying injured on the runway nearby? And still not a single one of these lethal bunglers has been fired.

323 225 A point I often make is that back in the 19th century, Actors were regarded mostly as low life gutter trash fit only to consort with whores, gamblers and thieves. Posted by: D-Lamp at April 10, 2014 10:31 PM (XnALK) Absolutely correct, and my boss says that was the case in the ancient Roman Empire. Actors, musicians, and other entertainers have always been bohemians on the fringes of society, prone to sexual excess and intoxication in various forms. Respectable people have often considered them to be lowlifes. But only since the 20th Century have they become rich and influential.

349 #71

Try to consider where he became really famous. Hint: It wasn't the US. The Boomtown Rats got some airplay in the US but were far, far bigger in the UK and Europe. Geldof had a fairly successful solo career for a while as well. Add in his starring in the film of Pink Floyd's 'The Wall,' extend with the number of pop stars who have a hit and are never heard from again after a year, and by the time he was organizing Live Aid Geldof had elder statesman status in that realm.

Consider Slade. They were frigging huge in the early 70s in the UK. 17 Top 20 singles, with 6 that went to #1. But when Quiet Riot had a US hit with a cover of Slade's 'Cum On Feel The Noize,' it was the first time a lot of people in the US became aware of the UK band.

Batman: The Animated Series co-creator Bruce Timm delivers a brand new Batman short in honor of the hero's 75th anniversary. Styled as a 1930s pulp, it follows Batman to the lair of Hugo Strange.

Since Batman first appeared in 1939, Timm decided to play tribute to that era with a sepia-toned adventure, and Hugo Strange, paired with his creature and a starlet-type blonde, evokes Universal's monster movies.

God, I keep reading these medical horror stories about women (or transgenders) going to underground clinics in back rooms, run by unlicensed quacks, where they're being injected with industrial grade silicone to plump out certain spots. Who could possibly be so dangerously stupid? Apparently a whole lot of people.

The agents were clearly visible on that recent afternoon, but the migrants were undeterred. Mainly women and children, 45 in all, they crossed the narrow river on the smugglersÂ’ rafts, scrambled up the bluff and turned themselves in, signaling a growing challenge for the immigration authorities. After six years of steep declines across the Southwest, illegal crossings have soared in South Texas while remaining low elsewhere. The Border Patrol made more than 90,700 apprehensions in the Rio Grande Valley in the past six months, a 69 percent increase over last year.

434 NYT: Under asylum law, border agents are required to ask migrants if they are afraid of returning to their countries. If the answer is yes, migrants must be detained until an immigration officer interviews them to determine if the fear is credible. If the officer concludes it is, the migrant can petition for asylum. An immigration judge will decide whether there is a “well-founded fear of persecution” based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion or “membership in a particular social group.” Immigration officials said they had set the bar intentionally low for the initial “credible fear” test, to avoid turning away a foreigner in danger. In 2013, 85 percent of fear claims were found to be credible, according to federal figures. As more Central Americans have come, fear claims have spiked, more than doubling in 2013 to 36,026 from 13,931 in 2012.

448 "Prediction re stabby kid: acyclovir psychosis."

In the overwhelming majority of teenage spree killings in recent years, people close to the family have told the press that the killer(s) had been marinated up to the hair roots in prescription psych meds.

There is of course never any official confirmation of this, because of medical privacy laws prohibiting such disclosures to the public.

Correlation is not necessarily causation, but sometimes correlation damn sure strongly implies causation. Teen murder sprees were once vanishingly rare in America. Now they're getting fairly common. What happened in between? The medical culture of stuffing potent psychotropics down young people.

Or, perhaps if we quit doing that, the lethal sprees would continue to happen and we would have to conclude that other factors are at work. It's frustrating to not know.

454 Roscoe Arbuckle got a bum rap. It was the Zimmerman/Martin trial of its day. The likely cause of Virginia Rappe's death was a botched abortion that had nothing to do with Arbuckle.

Jerry Stahl, best known for 'Permanent Midnight,' wrote a pretty good pseudo-autobiography of Arbuckle called 'I, Fatty.' I was a bit surprised by the bibliography of research he included, indicating he took the historical veracity of the project much more seriously than I would have guessed at first glance.

498 The problem with Stephen Colbert taking over for Letterman is the lack of any known persona that is him as opposed to his schtick. I cannot recall ever seeing him doing anything where it was just him being himself. The closest I can think of is, IIRC, a Playboy interview he did a while back.

I watched the Colbert Report in its entirety exactly once. It proved to be exactly as annoying as I expected it would be. The essential problem is that I've always found Bill O'Reilly, regardless of whether he was right or wrong, extremely annoying. He just grates on me. Sean Hannity isn't as bad but also isn't someone I'd go out of my way to listen to or watch.

So watching someone do their impression of BOR holds no appeal whatsoever.

509 One of the leading theories for the steep decline in violence is less lead poisoning. As we got rid of lead paint and other sources of lead in the environment (gasoline) the violence rate went down. There was a delay because it was about childhood exposure. Lead exposure in early childhood led to impulsive, violent teens and adults 10, 20, 30 years later. So the we saw a lag between lead removal efforts and the fall in violent crime. That's the theory at least.

529 Still not sure about Bundy Ranch. From what I understand his family has been farming cows on public land from the 1870's but do not own the land they are calling Bundy Ranch, the federal government does. Yet to be determined when and how the federal government took control of the land or was in control of it from the time Nevada became a state. Nevada never had ownership of it just allowed the state to claim it as part of Nevada and not a federal territory. How does one farm cows on "public land" and can anyone with cows just dump them in "public land" and then look in on them every so often as they are almost wild cows now. When the family has a bill they get the horse ready and go out to the "public land" ranch and pick one of the wild cows to harvest and sell. Only in liberal land is land is free to use unless you own it, even if they call it "public land". Someone needs to get paid have it be the feds, state or the private owner.

The wrong people are now involved to know who is the bad guy and the good guys. Using pregnant women as human shields is not a way to gain friend and influence people neither is assaulting them. The BLM have been allowing the Bundy family to "illegal", term set by a court and judges use the "public land" ranch for 20 years and in all those 20 years no one tried to buy the land away from the feds or have the state take ownership all because of principle yet to be determined that "public land" means the free or near free to use.

Posted by: Trevor@TJexcite at April 11, 2014 12:21 AM (O3+sw) Most Western states were only allowed into the union if they agreed to hand over all their land to the Federal government, which violates the precept that they are accepted on an equal basis with original states. Many states were required to have clauses in their State Constitutions which acknowledged this. Subsequently, most have purged their state Constitutions of this, after what has been called the "Sagebrush Revolt." Also, it is true that public land ought to be the public's land, not the government. The concept of the commons free for all freemen has been around for the better part of the past millennium since the Charter of the Forest, which was just as important as the Magna Carta: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charter_of_the_forest

I simply haven't seen a good presentation of the facts of this case from a source I can trust. But, yes, you can run cattle, or other stock on "public" lands, provided you lease or buy grazing rights. And somebody is supposed to manage the the whole thing so the land doesn't get over-grazed. There is a term of art in economics, called "the tragedy of the commons" that speaks to this very issue.

Which was kind of awkward since the main point of the call was them wondering why I hadn't used any of my rewards points (which I signed up for because I got tired of telling them I wasn't in it for points) which had accumulated to the point I could get any number of $50 giftcards with points left over.

Our 'compromise' was they can call again in a year and see if anything has changed.

OK -- short discourse about searching old ace.mu.nu comments.....to start with, you don't do it from the website, you don't do it on ace.mu.nu, and you have to keep your wits about you.

Go to Google Advanced Search, use any of the search items in the top half of the page, but use "minx.cc" in the "site or domain" box. It's easy to remember if you look at the address bar showing for your browser right now -- minx.cc is the domain where AoSHQ comments live. So if you wanted to see any of my words of wisdom on March 12, you'd put in "March 12, 2014 T1005" on the first line and "minx.cc" on the site/domain line and spung! Wisdom of the ages.....or not.

Could be interesting, I'll give it a few more episodes. "Seikoku no Dragonar" - Episode 1: Boy training in magic doesn't have a summoned dragon. He summons that dragon and it turns out to be a Loli (probably Tsundere). The universe in which it takes place could be interesting. King turns out to be a young boyÂ… "Gokukoku no Brynhildr" - Episode 1: High school student in astronomy club meets girl who resembles girl whim whom he got into an accident (she died, he didn't). I did see that double J Jeff Jarrett is launching a new company - Global Force. Not the most inspiring name, but who knows. Rumors are Toby Keith is his money man and it'll be on CMT. So I assume it's going for that 'rasslin southern style market. But then he's calling it Global Force, so, again, who knows. Posted by: Costanza Defense at April 11, 2014 12:38 AM (ZPrif) Well, TNA has been cutting their roster way down over the past year or so, but that TV slot on Spike is worth a ton, but word is that the WWE wants to be on Spike, so if that happens, TNA will be looking for somewhere to land. Jarrett's promotion will probably end up being succesful because Jarrett just "gets it". The problem he ran into when he sold off part of TNA was Hulk Hogan. Hogan comes into any promotion and just sucks the air out of it. Young wrestlers? Not any more, Hogan's buddies all need jobs so they move in and push out the younger guys. Current stars? Hogan's buddies take the top spots so they get pushed down to the bottom. Chances are that they will end up in another promotion by the years end.

I have a bad feeling about "Bundy Ranch".

From the link in 560, I find this quote:

"See even if dad hasnÂ’t paid them [the BLM], ...",

Maybe all of the previous claims in the article are correct, but this admission leaves Bundy open.

I suspect that Hairy Reed really is behind all of this, but the non-payment seems to settle things.

--------------

Here's what I've gleaned from various sources:

The Feds moved the 'protected habitat zone' for the Desert Tortoise...from another area, to the area where the Bundy family has had grazing rights.

This was done...because some well-connected developers wanted it done.

Bundy was apparently paying his grazing fees until this was done.

He's been in court trying to fight this relocation of the Desert Tortoise 'protected zone' since then.

They are as the "M" in the name suggests, managers not owners. Some explanation that may or may not be correct is that the territory is NV land, and the state asked or was coerced by the Feds into a management 'contract.' All legal under a cursory read and/or slam-down, heavy-handed Federal government that we've come to know and love. Not entirely relevant but not easily ignored is the legal precedence of squatting. OF course squatting sounds awfully illegal to our post-modern ears but that's exactly how a large portion of the western US was settled. Good read* with some background = The Mystery of Capital: Why Capitalism Triumphs in the West and Fails Everywhere Else by Hernando de Soto. *Actually, I'd say it's required reading for any serious conservative.

WCW and WWF(E) were at the height of their feud. ECW was pushing those two, and Smokey Mountain and USWA were really developing some great talent. Then, it was all gone. Think about McMahon running the WWF, Bischoff running WCW, Heyman running ECW, Jarrett running USWA, and Jim Coronette running Smokey Mountain. They all knew how to book shows, and it showed. Now compare that to what is going on in the WWE today and TNA under Dixie Carter. The shows are the same week in and week out. There is no build up to anything, it is all instant gratification. Years ago I remember storylines taking a year to develop.

676 675 You have better control than I do.

677 I'm gonna attempt to go back to sleep. Night, Nightwalkers.

678 Heh. I remember digging through my mom's freezer for Lord knows what a few years back, and I found a box of thin mints. She said "I haven't bought GS cookies in at least five years." Sis and I still tore them up. "Gone in Sixty Seconds."

Title 18 U.S.C. § 4: Misprision of felony: Whoever, having knowledge of the actual commission of a felony cognizable by a court of the United States, conceals and does not as soon as possible make known the same to some judge or other person in civil or military authority under the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.

That's the law, folks

681 If you aren't already reading City-Journal, you should start now. High brow conservative opinion. This latest article relates to Hirsi Ali and the rescencsion of her honorary degree there plus a talk to the graduating class.

Beat down like a Mozilla CEO for saying some 'controversial' things in her past.

682 oy ... Roses are white, and sometimes they're yellow, time to hit the hay, saw some logs, or in hippy speech 'time to mellow' ...

683 Maybe some of you old timers could ask Ace to remove the ban on the Lace Wig bot. I miss all the old advertising bots. Sometimes they were the only ones that made any sense.

684 685 Agreed, I don't know how I get through the week without a chance to purchase some pipe T junctions.

685 I could use a new steel door for my bunker of doom. I'm too lazy to look for one. If the steel door bot could make it back, I would be set.

686 DonÂ’t waste your money on a steel door. I had one installed to help keep the cold out instead of a thin wooden one with a large window. It didnÂ’t help. But the house is old & has no insulation. IÂ’m getting some installed next month.

687 Carol, my bunker of doom is an old 45 metal shipping container that I got for scrap value. It's half buried along side the barn. It's where we keep most of our junk.

Our fortress of doom couldn't keep out a determined goose who wanted to get in.

688 GMB, I wanted the door for a different reason. they are not cheap but I think it was mostly the cost of installing it & adding insulation around the door. Old houses in NE area have virtually no insulation. They took almost all day to install that door. I happened to be home to see them & turned heat off because it was going outside on a cold January day. I hope you have better luck with your bunker of doom, GMB.

690 Tonight on my way home in Seoul, Korea, the radio in my taxi played the London Boys' "London Nights" and I enjoyed it immensely thanks to Ace of Spades.
