This appears to be a Kurosawa-grade combination of BOLO and YOLO.

My wife is a track coach and I support her by going to the meets. All over the North really--Chicago area for sure.  I was actually working in New Jersey on a project where there was a big push to get people to switch to natural gas.  The heating oil folks were running truly hilarious ads swearing that switching to natural gas would cause your house to blow up.  When people found out I was from Oklahoma, they asked me how many houses blew up a month due to natural gas.

The heating oil folks were running truly hilarious ads swearing that switching to natural gas would cause your house to blow up. When people found out I was from Oklahoma, they asked me how many houses blew up a month due to natural gas.

His argument is the system is corrupted because of lawyers. That a lawyer is necessary in the current system is part of the point. In a simpler system that wasn't complicated by lawyers, any educated gentleman could successfully defend himself. Lawyers complicate the system to build up an ivory tower that serves as a barrier to entry, and enrich themselves by promoting their services as necessary to successfully defend oneself in a litigious society.

Another way  of looking at this.  Lawyers are usually the ones making up our state and fed legislatures.  What do they  do?  They make a law for every function in human life.  So many laws that one must have a lawyer to decipher  the web they've  woven. 

 

If they can't convict on one law, there's a dozen waiting in the wings they can convict on.  Everyone  is guilty.  It takes a lawyer to divine how guilty.

Koreans (not known for baking skills -  in fact it's very rare to even see a household oven in Korea),  make some of the most amazing cakes. 

 

Most Korean  bakers still use lard, butter, real sugar, and all the other crap that's been deemed  "bad for you",  but  oh man, most people have forgotten what  a cake and frosting is actually supposed to taste like.

I sold my condo in Boston and closed on my house in RI last year in a day. I didn't even go to the closing for the condo, a lawyer was required to be there and he took care of it. By the time I got to the closing in RI at noon all the paperwork had been delivered and yes, the closing attorney took care of the whole process in about 20 minutes. Easy peasy.

That thing about having attorneys at a closing is probably mostly a NE thing, and would tend to I agree. It appears to be mostly an unnecessary hurdle.  In the NW, we allow limited practitioners of law to do such routine things.

But if it's substantial purchase, a commercial property, or some non-routine issues involved, the expense to have an attorney attend to the transaction would likely be dwarfed by the expense of litigating any resulting issues.   Life is complicated.  No sense whining about it.

388 366, I live in NJ, but that's not the point. Rush was the go-to guy whenever something happened, had to turn him on to get his perspective. He usually always brilliantly explained whatever the issue, and all of us in the choir got charged up--and then the jerkoffs would isolate one thing he said --a  wrong fact, a mild gaffe, a mistimed chortle, snicker or snort, and that would become the story. His "brilliant analysis" would never become the story, and would never get past the true believers. Same with Levin. The man is brilliant--and he sells lots of books to people who already agree with him.

397 it is the constant ridicule of people who get law degrees as buffoons who would not be capable of getting a 'real' degree. Point taken. I swim against a tide here in which society has decided that the law degree is the sine qua non of intellect. Well, it's just not. I could give my litany of reasons, but the fact that it's not has great social impact. I think it's a mistake for young people to see it as the pinnacle of higher education. For instance, the overestimation of the intellect of the following: Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Joe Biden, etc. etc. etc. Tearing down that particular credential, above all others, has social and political value. But I've stopped with the blunt over-the-top statements, actually (instead referencing prior ones as a running joke) simply because the tete-a-tete that I expect to come never happened. In any case, I do go too far and I apologize for that.
