— DrewM When he's not slumming here with astronomy posts CAC does election predictions over at The Federalist.
His latest breakdown of this year's Senate races are now up.
Right now, the Republicans are projected a net gain of seven seats, enough for a 52-48 majority in the Senate if ]Alaska Senate Democrat Mark] Begich manages to hold on....
What are some races to watch in the month ahead? Oregon could become interesting, particularly the possible contrast of a pediatric neurosurgeon (Dr. Monica Wehby) running against Senator Jeff Merkley. The stateÂ’s exchange is a complete disaster, and Dr. Wehby, focused almost entirely on the health care law, raised an impressive $500k in the last quarter. Since we have no polling data for this match up, weÂ’re going to leave this race as moderate-Democrat. Lastly, Georgia is still a Republican-favored race worth watching. We havenÂ’t had any non-partisan sponsored polling in a while, but the Democrat, Michelle Nunn, has been fund-raising well and picked up endorsements from several former Republican Senators. The stateÂ’s electorate makes getting to the mid-40s easy, but winning is another matter. Still, the Republican field is wide open, and if it turns bitter, a damaged candidate could give her a further boost.
One of the wildcards in this or any scenario is amnesty.
So why with the chance to take control of the Senate and increase their margin in the House are Republicans flirting with the idea of a divisive intra-party fight that takes focus away from ObamaCare? Sean Trende has a few thoughts (with an assist from our own AmishDude".
5) Republicans are afraid of winning. In the course of my musings on Twitter, AmishDude suggested that the real motive here is that the GOP leadership is actually concerned about the implications of a landslide. Of all the suggestions put out there, this seems to make the most sense, and synthesizes the above theories reasonably well while addressing most of my pushbacks on them.
The idea is twofold. First, a landslide would present as much of a problem as it does an opportunity for those who might want to revisit the issue in 2015, especially if the GOP establishment (or its donors) believes this is a must-do before the 2016 elections. The base would be even more agitated after a big victory, and appalled at any compromise on this issue if the GOP picks it up in 2015. In addition, absent a majority, Democrats wouldnÂ’t have the same incentive to support a bill that contained further compromises, especially since they already view the bill as a compromise in the first place. TheyÂ’d be better off watching Republicans flail and fail to pass a bill as their own base abandons them; this is roughly what happened in the mid-2000s.
This makes sense of the timing issue. Perhaps the GOP really did plan on letting the issue die last summer, when taking the Senate looked like a 50-50 shot, and breaking even in the House seemed like the order of the day. But then the Obamacare rollout hit, and suddenly Republicans looked like they might enjoy a 2010 redux.
If only the GOP were this clever and devious in dealing with Democrats as they are conservatives.
The problem with all this talk that amnesty is a question of timing, that it will be more acceptable next year than it is now, misses two big things.
First, amnesty is unacceptable as a matter of policy and principle. Timing is irrelevant.
Second, imagine the GOP holds it together long enough to win big by focusing on ObamaCare and punting on immigration. Are they really then going to pivot away from ObamaCare and onto amnesty?
Sadly all we're really debating is when the GOP will do something incredibly stupid and not if they will.
Remember all of this the next time someone from Team GOP says conservatives are helping Democrats. If the GOP would stop doing dumb things, we'd be happy to fight the Democrats but we're not there yet.
Added: Right on cue.
Conservatives burning bandwidth on a stupid Coke ad and not talking about Obamacare. ("I'll take, 'Why will we fuck up 2014?' Alex!"
— Rick Wilson (@TheRickWilson) February 3, 2014![]()
Yes, the danger to distracting from the GOP's ObamaCare message is a handful of people on Twitter, not the GOP's congressional leadership's focus on amnesty.

hahahhahaha, they didn't need a snark tag for that. They will be lucky to hold the House if they keep pushing amnesty.

Having more conservatives in congress makes that tougher for them, so losing in 2014 so as to be able to do better in 2016 with a full slate of left leaning Republicans is acceptable to them.
This isn't a surprise of course, but this is what we get as conservatives because we've continued to support Republicans after they've stabbed us in the back.
In 2006 conservatives rebelled over amnesty, and the leadership gave us the most notable amnesty proponent in the Republican party...and most conservatives supported him. In 2010 conservatives rallied to oppose Obamacare and in return the leadership gave us Mitt Romneycare as the nominee...and most of us supported him.
Until the Republicans start paying a prices for betraying their base this will continue...

The Constitution makes the Congress by far the most powerful branch of the government.
A motivated, conservative Republican party with even just 50+1 reliable members in both houses could easily force the agenda in DC.
The problem is the Republican leadership is not conservative, the party as a whole is incompetent, and there is no feedback loop to reward/punish for performance.

A GOP majority in 2014 causes problems for the Repubs in the 2016 presidential election year, regardless of their actions.
1. Act like Democrat-lite RINOs - you lose your base for 2016.
2. Act like true conservatives and start taking a machete to the welfare state - you completely energize - what would otherwise be an uninspired group - the FSA (47%) to come out in force.

Boehner and co feel insulated, because even if they were removed from office, they have wealthy friends that will take care of them.
If that lifeline was not there it might change behavior. Of course the problem is to have this be believable we'd have to actually punish at least one Republican traitor in such a fashion first...

I can think of five good reasons the GOP needs to win the Senate majority:
Judges, Harry Reid's retirement, judges, impeachment trial, and judges.

1. Any house-Senate negotiations will not come after Harry Reid "filling the amendment tree."
2. Obama will have to negotiate for the things he wants against a GOP controlled congress, rather than just talking smack about Republican obstruction while Harry and friends table everything.

I mean, it's about nothing but political posturing.
The Republican leadership has embedded so many "poison pills" in to their plan vis-Ã -vis the Democrat's Senate plan, that nothing will pass this year. Additionally, the "don't trust Obama" meme works well with independents.
Meanwhile, the Republicans now have a plan.

Jack Ryan: His plan?
Adm. Painter: Russians don't take a dump, son, without a plan.

While a Republican-controlled Senate wouldn't be able to advance legislation given the President's veto power, they could stop cold much of the President's agenda and reduce him to lame-duck status the rest of his term. President Obama would, of course, continue to circumvent Congress and the Constitution with his illegal use of Executive power, but even those efforts would be hampered with a Senate Republican majority.
Right now, the big money donors who more or less control the Republican Party are breathing down the necks of the GOP Establishment, demanding movement on amnesty legislation now, damnit. Meanwhile, the conservative base is on the verge of revolt and a replay of the Whig/Republican split in 1852. Forced to choose between the base and the big business wings of the party, the GOP Establishment will always choose the money guys. For them, it's a no-brainer, partly because money talks and partly because the GOP Establishment despises us almost as much as the Democrats do.

President Barack Obama is counting on Senate Democrats to help approve his legislative agenda during his final years in office. And though they are his staunchest allies on most economic issues, many Democratic senators are breaking with him on key issues in very public ways.
From trade to Iran sanctions, the Keystone XL pipeline, Obamacare, the National Security Agency and energy policy, Senate Democrats seem unusually comfortable criticizing the president, with only minimal concerns about repercussions from the White House.
Even ObamaÂ’s steadfast ally, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, didnÂ’t mince words last week when he rejected a bill to fast-track trade deals that is strongly backed by the White House, working against Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus of Montana, a Senate colleague who has been tapped to be the presidentÂ’s ambassador to China.
Even some Republicans are noticing.

Almost every kid ate the candy instead of waiting.
And this is I think what happened with the left after Barky's election.
Fortunately for us, forcing the country so far left is the one thing that has any hope of reversing the tide.
Unfortunately for us, we have few leaders of any note and the left controls almost every major institution already...including the Republican party.

Random thought:
When they aired a reading of the Declaration last night, how many Americans sat up at took note when this was said out loud: "But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty to throw off such government and provide new guards for their future security."
I didn't expect the government to allow that statement to get on the air.
I also wonder if anyone heard: "we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor," and noted (aloud, as I did) that 'people just don't talk like that anymore.'

Is the GOP truly delusional, thinking that passing an amnesty will result in any change of the Hispanic vote?
Or, is it that the GOP big-donors want amnesty because "cheap labor"?
Neither of those things makes any sort of logical sense. Amnesty will not result in cheap labor - it will increase labor costs for those currently hiring illegals as the illegals obtain legal status and become entitled to various statutory benefits - overtime pay, FMLA leave, etc. (not to mention payroll taxes for those paying the illegals under the table). Plus, the illegals will likely want better wages once they no longer have to worry about immigration issues. And, the unions are salivating at organizing the newly legalized immigrants - which will increase labor costs dramatically. So, the idea that amnesty somehow results in keeping labor costs down is nonsensical.
The only way that amnesty can result in lower wages (and/or keeping wages at their current low level) is if one is confident that an amnesty will result in a new wave of illegal immigrants to hire.
Put another way - the pro amnesty people claim that amnesty will not be a huge drain on federal and state resources because allegedly these illegals are almost all working at good paying jobs and therefore will not immediately go on various state and federal entitlement programs. Assuming this is true, passing an amnesty is not going to lower labor costs or keep labor costs down. It can only increase those costs.
Unless we are being lied to and the vast majority of illegals don't work at all, and the sudden influx of legal workers created by an amnesty drives wages down (which also means lots of people going on state and federal entitlement programs).
In other words, to the extent big-donors want cheap labor, the status quo is better than amnesty - unless they are trying to screw over the American worker and seeking ways to drive the American workers' wages down.
As far as Hispanics voting for the GOP based on amnesty - it is absurd. There is no factual basis to support such a claim and tons of evidence to refute the argument. Polls show Hispanics as left on almost every economic issue. Hispanics did not increase their vote for the GOP after the 1986 amnesty. And on and on.
So - what is the reason for the amnesty push? What is it that the brain trust of the GOP truly think amnesty will achieve? I have seen nothing put forward that even remotely makes sense.
So, there are only 2 logical reasons (having any fact basis) for the GOP wanting an amnesty:
1. They want to create a new wave of illegals for businesses to hire at low wages; or
2. They want to create a huge influx of legal workers to drive wages down.
Either of those 2 things is against American interests.
And this is the party we support? these are the politicians we consider the "good guys"?

I agree that it is money from big donors driving this train. But, the question I have is which big donors? And for what purpose?
Here's the thing. Which businesses are clamoring for amnesty? Which businesses claim they have no available labor?
I'm not so sure that it is big donors who really want amnesty for purpose of cheap labor.
I have a sneaking suspicion that it is big donors who consider themselves the GOP "brains" who believe that passing an amnesty will result in sudden huge Hispanic votes for the GOP.
In other words, I'm not convinced that there are a lot of business interests who are pushing amnesty for business reasons. If your business model relies on cheap illegal immigrant labor, the status quo for illegals is better for your bottom line than an amnesty will be.
I'm betting instead that this is rich people who think they are political gurus who (delusionally) are convinced that the GOP will win big with Hispanics if we just pass an amnesty.

I never said business interests were cutting the checks, I don't even know if checks are there. I just suspect checks because these are politicians and they are predictable.
Who would be interested in doing this, again, is beyond my knowledge. I'm merely guessing like everyone else is. Well, not like everyone else because I'm not going into a rage-spaz at the thought of the inevitable betrayal by the GOP to the master brainiacs of the Democrats.*
*Padded RageTwitch floor mats at the Outrage Outlet!
*I have no idea that there is any betrayal or that the Democrats could muster half a mind, let alone a master brainiac.

So... a girl with a penis walks into a bar. Bets the bartender $20.00 she can pee into a shotglass 10 feet a way and not spill a drop.
Bartender takes the bet.... and the girl whips it out and proceeds to pee all over the bar.... never hitting the shotglass. Bartender laughs his head off.
Bartender collects the money, but notices the girl with a penis is grinning ear to ear. "What are your grinning at??" asks the bartender?? "You lost $20".
"Yep" she says.... "but I bet that table of drag queens over there $100 each I could pee all over your bar and you would laugh about it".

They figured he was laying off a bunch of bets in Vegas to offset all those sales in order to minimize his risk.
If you do it right, you make a shit-ton of sales and only end up paying juice on the money you borrowed.

You can insure almost anything ( those million dollar hole in one promotions are insured for a small premium ) but I don't know if the premium to insure a basically 50/50 promo would be worth it. If he insured a loss up to say , two million, I figure that premimum would cost him at least 750,000. That's just a guess. So he probably did some other strategy as you suggested.

Ahh - the old "outraged outrage". I love some good snark. No reason to be upset about anything. no reason to care about anything. No reason to have any principals or get upset. In fact, why are we even here? Why pay attention to the politics at all? Why vote? Why base a vote on anything? Wouldn't want anyone to believe I was "outraged" about something - I'm too cool for that. And that makes me so much more intelligent than anyone who cares or is outraged about anything.
I love the smell of hipster in the morning and early afternoon.

Okay. Here's some science. Women who do extreme physical training come very close to stop estrogen production. If there's a percentage quotient of estrogen to testosterone, the testosterone in these women will hold a higher percentage. What then?

Ewww! Why?
Just because I do not see the point of getting worked into a lather on a blog doesn't mean I do not have principles. Typing "Weepy Boehner!" and "Bitch McConnel!" isn't my style. I wish we had better, I'm glad we do not have worse. I don't like Obama going off with his E.O.'s, but I prefer that to having the Democrats control all legislation.
So I'll keep making the jokes (good, bad, and ugly) and let everyone else have their rage displays.
BTW - describing me as a hipster really proves you do not know me.

Okay you asked for it.
A girl with a penis walks into a bar and strikes up a flirty conversation with the bartender finally telling him that she has a penis.
The bartender says, " No big deal. We get a lot of characters in here ."
Relieved that the bartender wasn't angry, she orders an appletini.
The bartender says, " Okay, now I know you are lying. No one with a penis orders an Appletini.

People in Portland & along the I-5 corridor vote Navy Blue. Their numbers overwhelm the rest of the state which is red. People being screwed by obamacare/Cover Oregon are mostly LIVs who've voted dem for generations. They will not vote Republican, not even for a pretty female doctor one, CAC, I love ya, but there is.no.freaking.way. that a Republican will take Merkley's seat. He will cruise to reelection and so will Gov./Dr. Kitzhaber (his 4th term. Sigh.).
We can't catch a break even with our one Congressional Republican, Greg Walden. He's an establishment RINO high up in House leadership. Yay.

ITA. Here's my analogy: the GOP's a broken car and we have to get to the car race -- but a broken car cannot get us there. We must fix our own broken car before we can use it to defeat Dems.
