Sunday Masters Thread [Y-not]
— Open Blogger

Final round of the Masters is today. Television coverage starts at 2 pm Eastern on CBS. The leaders tee off at 2:40 pm.

I confess, I haven't been watching. The little bit of coverage I did see was abysmal and my favorite player, Phil Mickelson, didn't make the cut on Friday. But I'll probably watch today because the field is very tight and should make for some exciting golf.

Here's a link to the live leaderboard.

And here's a quick recap of the action so far, courtesy of Yahoo Sports.

There are ten players under par after three rounds. The co-leaders, Bubba Watson (who won the green jacket in 2012) and Jordan Speith (who is only 20 years old!), are at five under par. Four other players are within two strokes of the leaders, including Miguel Angel Jiminez who posted a six under par round on Saturday.

If I were to recommend a fan favorite for the Morons (and 'ettes), it'd probably be Bubba simply because he seems to be something of a good old boy, who drives this:

BubbaCar.jpg

Yes, that IS the real General Lee.

He also seems to be a really nice family man. So he'll be my sentimental favorite today.

Now golf does not have cheerleaders, per se, but there is plenty of eye candy to be had for the morons (and a few moronettes). Per Golf dot com, these are the most beautiful women in golf. Here's a pretty one (Kathleen Ekey) who has demurely covered her elbows:

KathleenEkey5_600.jpg

(There are many more elbowy pictures of hot golfer gals at the link, but I felt like posting a wholesome-looking gal instead of a tart. I denounce myself.)

Oh, okay, here's a link to Holly Sonders' photo shoot at Golf dot com. And, courtesy of getgitty dot com, here are some cheesecake pictures of her.

For the moronettes, I'd say that the defending champion, Adam Scott, is worth a gander:

adam-scott-golfer-760x438.jpg

Of course, he's young enough to be my son, so that kind of kills it for me a bit.

**Putting this up half an hour early. You can use the extra time to "research" those picture links... and take a shower.**

4 Yep, watching the small pre show. I read earlier that viewership is way down because Tiger isn't there. Too bad. I'm glad he's not. And, Mickelson's out. But, we've got a real race here. Bubba can never hold his emotions, while a young newb is holding his own. And the rest of them. Fun.

6 I read earlier that viewership is way down because Tiger isn't there. Too bad. I'm glad he's not. -- I think the coverage may have contributed to the viewership. It certainly dissuaded me from watching. I'm not a fan of the Masters organizers' broadcast strategy. I'd much rather have all-day coverage. In this format (only showing the later rounds), you're much more impacted by lousy announcing.

7 Another fan fave to consider is Boo Weekly. Another good ol' boy, he only plays in tournaments when he's not hunting and needs to make a payment on his ranch.

20 That 20 year old Jordan Spieth is quite a story too. Should be a good afternoon of golf. Agreed. If he wins, he replaces Tiger as the youngest Masters winner. It's about time someone started taking his place in the record books. Yeah, Tiger is the best in the world (still ranked #1), but his dalliances turned me off. That's just not supposed to happen in this sport. I'd rather follow golf than any other pro sport. The players are head and shoulders morally above football or basketball players. When was the last time a golfer got arrested?

22 I've read that there are now fewer black pro golfers than when tiger started 20 years ago. Like so many sports, the quality is so high that you have to be doing it all the time at a very young age. Well before puberty. Increasingly golfers come from very wealthy families that belong to country clubs so the kid can be playing every day by the time he's 8. Starting young lets their brain form around the sport. They literally process the game at a different level and have neural circuitry that someone who learns the sport post-puberty doesn't.

23 I have never seen better tee shots, in a major, by Bubba in the first 3 rounds. To land a power fade, or a cut, on those narrow fairways is unbelievable. If Bubba can re-gather his approach game and his two putting he will win. I was suprised that he got so rattled yesterday.

33 One theory for the dearth of black golf pros is the black caddy theory. Caddies used to skew black. Which meant a lot of young black kids whose father's were caddies grew up on a golf course from the time they could walk. This allowed them to play every day. Nowadays it's considered racist to have a black caddy carrying a rich white man's bags. Nobody wants that appearance -- blacks don't want to be caddies, and whites don't want a black caddy for fear of being called racist. There's a lot fewer middle and working class players in general. Lot fewer poor white kids that grow up to be golfers. Pro golfers come from a narrower slice of society than ever -- not from any bias, just because the talent level is so high, you almost have to have been playing constantly from a very young age. So elite golfers increasingly come from very wealthy families in the sunbelt where their father is a member of a country club and the weather allows them to play year round.

44 Yeah, the Belly Putters are banned. Four of the last six major championship winners (Keegan Bradley, Ernie Els, Webb Simpson and Adam Scott) claimed their titles using anchored strokes. http://tinyurl.com/nn7oumr What is an anchored stroke? It occurs when the club or gripping hand is intentionally held against the body. The top of the club is usually held against the body with a belly putter, while the broom-handled putter usually sees the gripping hand resting against the chest or chin. Neither club will be banned under the new law, just these ways of using them. The penalty from 2016 will be two strokes for each use of an anchored stroke. Golf's biggest anchors Four of the last six major winners used long putters - Adam Scott (2013 Masters), Ernie Els (2012 Open), Webb Simpson (2012 US Open) and Keegan Bradley (2011 US PGA Championship) dailymail.uk

Fun day, and most of the biggies were there. But something funny happened.

My brother and I had staked out some bleacher seats at one of the holes. As the players approached the hole to putt, one of the officials of the game held up a sign.

Quiet Please!

And just then some airplane comes flying in slow and loud right over the golf course on it's way to Davis-Monthan AFB just to the south of Tucson. I mean so loud you had to yell into someones ear in order to be heard.

I got a free drop for that. B'Gal and I lived in her dad's mobile home for a while. The little park it was in had its own golf course called Gator Gulch that used to be grazing area. On it were two large ponds with big signs saying not to feed or harass the gators. This was south of Tampa. I'm out there one afternoon playing when I look over to the first pond. A good sized gator (about a six-footer) missing its left front leg comes thumping its way out of the pond about 40 ft away from me. Said gator's friend (about two feet longer) then comes up, stops, looks over at me and raises way up in a posture that set my knees shaking immediately. With only a pitching wedge between me and the biggest gator I've ever seen that close, I repaired back to the trailer. It took several Guinnii before my pulse returned to normal.

Kids are leaving private schools with $50k+ debt entering a shrinking industry making $30k entry level working 70 hour weeks. One local school has taken a big hit. That's one reason Mississippi State's program is relatively healthy, lots of in-state students at $3800 tuition per semester (State puts in state "per academic year" total cost at $21,670 in-state, $31,858 out-of-state, of which base tuition and fees is $6772).  When I was there, most of the guys dropping were due to excessive partying.  There are also a lot of folks going through there that end up working at courses/clubs via the Landscape Architecture major.

76 Jordan Spieth is a good example. His father is a successful business executive and member of Brook Hollow Country Club in Dallas, which is where Spieth grew up playing. Spieth started playing golf at the age of 3. You don't have to be ultra wealthy. But you do increasingly need access to daily courses and top coaching from a young age. Spieth, for example, has a had Cameron McCormick as a swing coach since he was 12. McCormick is a failed professional golfer who became a teaching pro at Brook Hollow, where he taught Spieth. McCormick is an Australian who picked up golf late - age 15 -- and never got good enough to be a pro. He was good, just not good enough. 20-30 years ago he probably would have been good enough, but the talent is too good now. He failed Q-school a couple times before giving up his PGA dreams and settling for a life teaching golf to the sons of wealth outside Dallas. McCormick appears to have built quite a good life in Texas and Spieth's success will probably be very lucrative for his teaching rates going forward.

81 Pro-tip. The more or the purple shades you see on the greens, the drier and faster the greens are. The committee has however in the past few years set the back nine up a tad easier on Sundays to get the patrons cheering for the birdies and eagles. Freddy landing long iron on front of #4 green and it rolling out throught the green is a sign things made be a little firm and tougher on the front 9.

101 I haven't paid much attention to golf since dad died in 2000 (well, step dad). He taught me to play as a teen & took me out on occasion - God bless him & his patience. I joined the golf team when I got to High School, because I heard this girl I had a crush on was on the team. This was about '80, '81... I was bussed to an inner city school that was 70% black or so. It didn't take long to figure out that Sharon had exactly zero interest in skinny white geeks and only dated the star B Ball & football players (NTTAWWT), so i quit the team after a few weeks. Sadly, as bad as I was, I was best golfer we had. I doubt Booker T has had a golf team since the eighties - do any city high schools anymore?

110 I don't begrudge guys like Spieth growing up and spending their adolescence on the greens of the local country club. Good for them and their families. The dedication and skill and practice were required. I'm sure the country club was filled with other young, rich kids that didn't put in the work. Another example is Matt Kuchar. Kuchar's family were members at Heathrow Country Club outside Orlando. He was playing there constantly from at least the age of 11. Again, the pattern of country club membership in the sun belt and starting at a very young age, pre puberty. This is not the only path to the PGA, of course. Just an increasingly common one. And I have no problem admiring a rich kid who developed a skill into elite status. This is true in many sports that are very expensive to practice. Motorsports, for example. Similar to golf, the key is to have the kid racing when very young, pre puberty, so their young brain literally develops around the sport.

151 The Masters prize pool increased from $8 million to $9 million this year and the winner will take home a significant portion of the increased pot. The first-place check at the Masters is worth $1.62 million. The 2014 winnings are nearly $200,000 more than the $1.44 million Adam Scott won with his green jacket last year. All of the top finishers will receive a boost in their winnings this year with the second place finisher receiving $972,000. While coming up just short of winning the green jacket can be a major disappointment, a check for slightly less than $1 million is a good way to ease the pain. The same can be said for a third place finish which is worth $612,000. Whoever finishes fourth will take home just less than a half million dollars at $432,000 (all totals barring no ties).

196 Oh yeah Y-not, I love Phil too. He'll be back next time. Posted by: grammie winger at April 13, 2014 07:03 PM (oMKp3) I call Phil teddy bear. The problem with Phil is his chronic pain. I'm not sure he can really control the game anymore because of it.

I haven't watched Phil (or golf) long enough to be able to appreciate how much of his erratic play is from his mental approach (and risk taking) versus the arthritis, but Billy Casper told me the arthritis is a big issue for Phil.

199 I knew Bubba felt like he "lucked into" the first one. He feels more deserved of this one. That is how sports/competition is. You win, you won.
