Happy Monday.

Yesterday, the GAO released details on how Sec. Sebelius shook down outside companies for funding to promote Obamacare.

From Jim Geraghty's Morning Jolt (which you should subscribe to, if you aren't), about half of Georgia's healthcare sign-ups haven't paid.

More evidence that GM got kid glove treatment from federal regulators.

Unions are warming up to fracking.

Snowden's feelings are hurt that everyone thinks he's such a naif.

Gov. Perry's "makeover" is noticed by Politico. "He just seems like a very confident, upbeat and articulate spokesman for conservative policy and values," says former Perry staffer.

1 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Monday, April 21, 2014.  On this day in 1918 German fighter ace Manfred von Richthofen, better known as "The Red Baron", was shot down and killed over Vaux-sur-Somme in France.  Officially a Canadian pilot, Captain Arthur "Roy" Brown, is credited with the shoot down, but most likely he was shot by Australian ground troops with a machine gun.  Snoopy had no comment.

3 More flack on Common Core.  NY tests include numerous product brand names leading parents question if these are product placement ads.  NY educators deny this and the teachers and school officials are forbidden from discussing it.  However anonymous teachers have remarked about it in blogs.

Brands including Barbie, iPod, Mug Root Beer and Life Savers showed up on the tests more than a million students in grades 3 through 8 took this month, leading to speculation it was some form of product placement advertising.

I suspect that the companies making these materials were paid to do this and they never contacted the State educrats at all.  Why do I suspect this?  Because this is the kind of crony corruption crap you ALWAYS get when you remove local control of a public function and give it to a centralized authority.

12 The US is going to Hell in a hand-basket as the corrupt Obamanite administration operates a criminal empire out of the Whitehouse and members of the House want to pass a bill to regulate photo-shopping models on magazine covers?

Called the “Truth in Advertising Act,” the bill was co-sponsored by Republican Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen from Florida and Democratic Rep. Lois Capps of California.

So a RINO from FL (ACU 84) teams up with a Democrap from CA to push this crap.  Hopefully it will be stuck in committee.   She has done a few "conservative" things but it appears she has a liberal streak there as well.

13 The Supreme Court will hear a case involving the new TV service called Aereo which takes off the air TV signals and rebroadcasts them via the internet for a fee without paying the networks or broadcasters (as cable does).   According to this article this case will decide the fate of broadcast TV.

The case arises from American Broadcasting Companies v. The Obama administration is poised to change regulations to allow for union “ambush elections” in which workers have less time to decide whether or not to join a union — and in which workers’ phone numbers and home addresses are provided to unions.

They probably did use the same company that will handle the real test, Pearson. This year, schools are doing what is known as field testing the test. About 10% of the students are taking an initial form of the test to validate the technology and the questions as appropriate. Our state is in the same consortium as New York. 97 There were two RG Snoopy albums. One just had Snoopy vs the Red Baron and then a couple of other original songs and a bunch of cover songs (where I learned 'Little Red Riding Hood") and the other had S vs RB, The Return of the Red Baron, and Snoopy's Christmas. The second album was neat because each of the Snoopy songs was prefaced with a little two minute intro that was supposed to be WWI BBC reports from the western front.

111 G'morning Easter chicks and bunnies. -- News from the Far East as the Sun rises -- By Tom Phillips, Liushi, Zhejiang province 2:00PM BST 19 Apr 2014 "China on course to become 'world's most Christian nation' within 15 years." The number of Christians in Communist China is growing so steadily that by 2030 it could have more churchgoers than America, according to Fenggang Yang, a professor of sociology at Purdue University and author of Religion in China: Survival and Revival under Communist Rule. "It is a wonderful thing to be a follower of Jesus Christ. It gives us great confidence," beamed Jin Hongxin, a 40-year-old. "If everyone in China believed in Jesus then we would have no more need for police stations." Officially, the People's Republic of China is an atheist country but that is changing fast as many of its 1.3 billion citizens seek meaning and spiritual comfort that neither communism nor capitalism seem to have supplied. China is now poised to become not just the world's number one economy but also its most numerous Christian nation. China's Protestant community, which had just one million members in 1949, has already overtaken those of countries more commonly associated with an evangelical boom. In 2010 there were more than 58 million Protestants in China compared to 40 million in Brazil and 36 million in South Africa, according to the Pew Research Centre's Forum on Religion and Public Life. By 2030, China's total Christian population, including Catholics, would exceed 247 million, placing it above Mexico, Brazil and the United States as the largest Christian congregation in the world, he predicted. "Mao thought he could eliminate religion. He thought he had accomplished this," Prof Yang said. "It's ironic – they didn't. They actually failed completely." "They want the pastor to preach in a Communist way. They want to train people to practice in a Communist way," said the house-church preacher, who said state churches often shunned potentially subversive sections of the Bible. The Old Testament book in which the exiled Daniel refuses to obey orders to worship the king rather than his own god is seen as "very dangerous", the preacher added. "They do not trust the church, but they have to tolerate or accept it because the growth is there," said the Liushi and Wenzhou church leaders. "The number of Christians is growing – they cannot fight it. They do not want the 70 million Christians to be their enemy." "They do not trust the church, but they have to tolerate or accept it because the growth is there," said the church leader. "The number of Christians is growing – they cannot fight it. They do not want the 70 million Christians to be their enemy." The underground leader church leader said many government officials viewed religion as "a sickness" that needed curing, and Prof Yang agreed there was a potential threat. The Communist Party was "still not sure if Christianity would become an opposition political force" and feared it could be used by "Western forces to overthrow the Communist political system. There are people in the government who are trying to control the church," he said. The Telegraph, UK http://tinyurl.com/jwyw6au ...faith-based federal initiative

120 Texas Independence Won Battle of San Jacinto Day 1836 and the capture of Santa Anna "Santa Anna had disappeared during the battle, and next day General Houston ordered a thorough search of the surrounding territory for him. In the afternoon Sergeant J. A. Sylvester spotted a Mexican slipping through the woods toward Vince's Bayou. Sylvester and his comrades caught the fugitive trying to hide in the high grass. He wore a common soldier's apparel round jacket, blue cotton pantaloons, skin cap and soldier's shoes. [With Sylvester in the capture of Santa Anna were Joel W. Robison, Joseph D. Vermillion, Alfred H. Miles and David Cole.] They took the captive to camp, and on the way, Mexican prisoners recognized him and cried, "El Presidente!" Thus his identity was betrayed; it was indeed the dictator from below the Rio Grande. He was brought to General Houston, who lay under the headquarters oak, nursing his wounded foot. The Mexican President pompously announced, "I am General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, and a prisoner of war at your disposition." General Houston, suffering with pain, received him coldly. He sent for young Moses Austin Bryan and Lorenzo de Zavala Jr. to act as interpreters. Santa Anna cringed with fright as the excited Texas soldiers pressed around him, fearing mob violence. He pleaded for the treatment due a prisoner of war. "You can afford to be generous," he whined; "you have captured the Napoleon of the 'West." "What claim have you to mercy?" Houston retorted, "when you showed none at the Alamo or at Goliad?" They talked for nearly two hours, using Bryan, de Zavala and Almonte as interpreters. In the end Santa Anna agreed to write an order commanding all Mexican troops to evacuate Texas. Later, treaties were signed at Velasco, looking to the adjustment of all differences and the recognition of Texas independence. Thus ended the revolution of 1836, with an eighteen-minute battle which established Texas as a free republic and opened the way for the United States to extend its boundaries to the Rio Grande on the southwest and to the Pacific on the west. Few military engagements in history have been more decisive or of more far-reaching ultimate influence than the battle of San Jacinto." Texas A+M University http://tinyurl.com/k88cu5f

Posted by: Vic at April 21, 2014 07:56 AM (T2V/1) Here, liquor sales in general are a county-by-county decision. My enlightened county is dry. They haven't figured out that two of the highest-volume liquor stores in the state are about 6" across the county line. A while back, a local restaurant got an exemption from the state to sell beer. They even agreed to have a separate room to segregate it from the general population. The churches were OUTRAGED! and began boycotting the place on Sundays after church. The owner eventually backed down, but the damage was done. He was closed a couple of months later.

138 Morning all. Start your day off with a smile. http://tinyurl.com/kcqx5v4 Cop Shoots Dog. No, Wait! He Shoots Himself. Dog Is Fine. In Riverside County, California, "a large pitbull breed dog attacked" an unnamed sheriff's deputy according to a police spokesman who seems to be having a little trouble taking his own script seriously. "In defense of himself...he fired one round at the dog, and inadvertently struck himself in the leg." The dog's owner, Jorge Rodriguez, told NBC Los Angeles that the "attack" consisted of his dog barking at the stranger. Rodriguez almost managed to completely suppress his smirk while expressing sympathy for the deputy who tried to kill his dog. The dog, named Precious and subsequently seen in NBC Los Angeles' news video romping with children in a fenced yard, escaped injury. The "large pitbull breed dog" appears to reach just about knee-high on what looks like a 6-year-old.

140 The case arises from American Broadcasting Companies v. Aereo in which Aereo won against injunctive relief in the circuit court and the 2nd court of appeals. Copyright law is incredibly muddy but after looking at what is going on here I side with the networks. I like the "little guy" usually but I see this as pure copyright infringement.

141 California Obamacare enrollees are struggling to find doctors who accept their newly purchased health insurance plans. UCSF Dr. Kevin Grumbach calls the phenomenon "medical homelessness." CBS San Francisco says that many of the health care clinics for low-income individuals that helped people enroll in Obamacare are now seeing those same people "coming back to the clinic begging for help." "They're coming back to us now and saying, 'I can't find a doctor,'" Rotacare clinic staffer Mirella Nguyen told CBS San Francisco. "What good is coverage if you can't use it?" The problem stems from Obamacare's "narrow networks" – extreme restrictions on access to doctors and hospitals in an effort to cut costs. California single mother of two Thinn Ong experienced the pain of Obamacare's narrow networks when she realized that her $200-a-month Obamacare plan is not accepted by many of the doctors in her area. "Yeah, I sign it. I got it. But where's my doctor? Who's my doctor? I don't know," said a frustrated Ong. CBS San Francisco reports that "Experts said the magnitude of the problem is growing, and will soon be felt by all Californians." It's called rationing and the democrats don't care if you live or die. What comes around, goes around. How'd ya like them apples

What we need to do is first, totally eliminate the "federal war on drugs", all federal drug laws, the federal drug police and departments, and all federal subsidies to local police departments.

The the locals will have to fire about half of their departments and get rid of all the military SWAT teams except in big cities like NY and LA.

Then we need a serious reform of tort laws such that the COPs are held accountable and not the taxpayer.  That means getting rid of the travesty known as joint and several liability.

157 On a ranch in rural Oregon, a radical Muslim holding a dagger with a curved blade yanked back the head of a kneeling young man and brought the metal to his neck. “He said he was going to show us how to properly slice someone’s throat,” the kneeling man’s sister testified Thursday as prosecutors began presenting their case against an Egyptian-born imam known as Abu Hamza Masri, the latest terrorism case to unfold in a New York federal court. Masri, who also goes by Mustafa Kamel Mustafa, was not the man holding the knife, but a government indictment alleges that he sent the knife-wielding man from London to Oregon to establish a terrorist training camp. It is one of 11 charges against Abu Hamza Masri, a naturalized British citizen who gained fame for his radical sermons in London’s Finsbury Park mosque and who was extradited to the United States in October 2012. The defendant, who says he lost both arms fighting in Afghanistan, faces life in prison if convicted on the most serious charges of hostage-taking and conspiracy to take hostages, stemming from the December 1998 abduction of 16 tourists in Yemen. Other charges include providing material support to terrorists and conspiring to support terrorists by sending men and money to set up the camp outside Bly, Ore., a remote hamlet about 300 miles southeast of Portland. 172 More from Eric Metaxas' biograpy, "Bonhoeffer, Pastor, Prophet, Spy", "By the time of Hitler's ascension. much of the German Church understood grace only as abstract concept-"God forgives us; That's his job". But we know that true grace comes to us only by costly sacrifice. And if God was willing to go to the cross and endure such pain and absorb such a cost in order to save us, then we must live sacrificially as we serve others. Anyone who truly understands how God's grace comes to us will have a changed life. That's the gospel. not salvation by law or by cheap grace, but by costly grace. Costly grace changes you from the inside out. Neither law nor cheap grace can do that....We still have lot of legalism and moralism in our churches. In reaction to that many Christians want to talk only about God's love and acceptance. They don't like talking about Jesus' death on a cross to satisfy divine wrath and justice. Some even call it "divine child abuse." [I'm looking at you Episcopal Bishop John Shelby Spong-FenelonSpoke] Yet if they are not careful, they run the risk of falling into the belief in "cheap grace"-a non costly love from a non holy God who just loves and accepts us just as we are. That will never change anyone's life." Timothy J. Keller Author of "The Reason for God."
