Welcome to the short and sweet edition of the Saturday car thread.

Thanks to the Morons and Moronettes who forward along the fine tips which make it possible.

First up this week, the UAW is still squawking about Chattanooga. The charge: Collusion between Gov. Bill Haslam, Sen. Bob Corker and VW to the tune of $300M in incentives if the plant did not unionize. A couple of thoughts here:

1. Such an offer might explain the differences of opinion which arose between Corker's office and VW with regard to discussions of potential plant expansion. Then again, it is not unusual for any state or locality to offer incentives to get, or to keep, a large jobs-creating company or industry. Aren't conditions a normal part of the incentive/negotiations process?

2. The argument that VW colluded with government officials against the UAW seems a little shaky given the preferential treatment that the union received from VW in their attempts to unionize the plant: access to employees and to the plant as well as support for unionization from the big European unions and, even, VW's own management.

3. I am not an attorney nor am I associated with a union, so I welcome the opinions of those who are and can shed light on the situation yet, as far as I can tell, nobody has alleged that the offer of incentives was communicated to the laborers, and it is the laborers who cast the votes. In fact, VW adamantly denied that there had been any discussions of plant or line expansions when Sen. Corker claimed there had been. Unless the laborers themselves were aware of and persuaded by a big corporate incentive to vote against their own best interests, I can't see how such an offer would be deemed as having influenced the vote.

4. Hey UAW and TN Dems, your desperation is unzipped. You've got it hanging out there for all to see. When so many in the nation are not just indifferent to you, but against you, you might have a problem, and PR is the least of it. The longer you cry and whine and point fingers at the big, bad Republicans the whinier and weaker you appear but, go ahead, spend every last dime you have fighting this fight. Empty your coffers now. Please. Money buys influence with the Dems and I'd love nothing so much as to see you rendered powerless re the 2014 and 2016 elections.

The true story of a classic car found hidden away in a Centre Hall, PA, garage. We're always hearing tales of someone who knew someone who knew someone who found a barely used, highly collectible car sitting in an old barn/garage somewhere, and a little old lady who had no idea of it's value. This is not that tale. And it seems that there's no shortage of skeptics eager to try and debunk the find.

The beauty of the week:

The first time that I saw the 1929 Stutz Model M Lancefield Coupe, I thought that it must be the work of a high-end hotrod builder like Chip Foose or Troy Trepanier. It looked like the classiest Â’32 three window Ford in the world, but somewhat bigger. A chopped top, rows of louvers, no running boards, and a bad ass stance. In other words, all the elements of a traditional hotrod are there. The thing is, this ainÂ’t no hotrodded version of some common car. This is the way it rolled out in 1929. This is the blueprint for every early Ford V8 rod that someone has cobbled together in the last 75 years. Quite an amazing design feat to say the least.

I've had a couple and liked them, but they are nothing special to drive.

Had a short visit with the Toy this AM. Way too early to bring it out so I just walked around it and sat in it.

This year will bring a cosmetic resto on the Ramcharger, it's beginning to show some age finally.

If younger daughter ever gets a newer computer, then maybe I can put some pics up of my stuff when I buy hers. This 'puter is so old and lacking in features that it aint funny.

18 In my mind, the '65s and first 252 '66s, which were left over '65s, are the only Shelbys which were truly special cars. Bare bones race cars for the street, which is why they didn't sell nearly as well as the later cars.

25 The Omni GLHS was quite the laugh, not the least reason being Chrysler actually sold a car whose official acronym was "Goes Like Hell." It was still such a shit car, though, cheap materials, uncomfortable seats and driving position, crappy controls. It was just stupid quick. It's too bad the Daytona died ugly (I think that last remake for the last couple of years was really bland) and the replacement just didn't have any real potential (though it looked okay, the first gen Avenger did).

28 Actually Vic, insurance for collector cars is very cheap. I just added my 'new' '55 T-Bird to my policy and it was only $200 a year for $35,000 agreed coverage.

    I remember driving the 1st edition 5.0 Mustangs, too. Mostly sideways.   It took some work to get them to put the power down without excess wheel spin--do that and they were/are squirrel quick.

33 sold my '65 in early 1973 for around 500 bucks! Bought mine in 1991 for $500. Used to ride past it on my way to school and always said I'd buy it if it ever went up for sale. Had to borrow 4 wheels from a friend and then push it 3 miles to get it home. Had it running in under 4 hours once I got some minor repairs and a tune-up done. Threw new tires on and drove it around the country for the next 5 years while I restored her. Love that damn van.

37 What I remember about the '80s Chrysler cars was that they all had a very unique odor inside of them when they were new. I guess it was off-gassing from the plastic, but there was no mistaking it.

38 My best Barn Find. I had a bunch of Indians and Harleys starting in 1968; mostly Indians at first. Just buy something and build a bike to ride, no full blown dresser restorations. I was building bobbers but nobody was calling them that back then. Anywho someone I knew told me about an old Indian police bike and I bought it. Turned out to be a 1930 Indian inline four cylinder Police Special, complete in every detail including the siren, locking speedo to display the perp's speed and all the Harrison County Mississippi livery. Apparently the only one in existence. It's in a meseum in Vegas now. Or at least it was. Been a while.

That is one of the behind the scene pictures of Operation Mustang. When Ford put a 1966 Mustang up on the Empire State building's observation deck on the 86th floor. They had to take the car apart to fit in elevators.

56 My roommate in college had a grandmother who died and left him a '67 Oldsmobile with 11k miles on it. This was in the mid 90s. I don't know what the value was, but the thing was huge. And it took leaded gas so he carried around some lead in the trunk and added lead with each fill up. No idea if that was fucking up the engine or not. Funniest thing was him trying to parallel park the beast. Good times.

Out and about here in the SF Bay Area the other day, I came up behind a car which had a couple of Obama bumper stickers on it. One of them bearing Biden's taunting quote from the 2012 campaign:

"Bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive!"

On a Honda.

It's a weird cocktail of bluster, cognitive dissonance and Fen's Law.

On the one hand, liberals point to the survival (for now) of Government Motors as being a proud Obamanomic success story. On the other hand, they personally _would not be seen dead_ in a GM car. So declasse!

Those are driven by flyover unpeople in Jesusland, not by them personally.

They won't even buy and drive the Chevy Volt. There are huge numbers of Priuses and Teslas around here, so they get the concept. They're just not going to plunk down their own money on the GM implementation of that concept. Fine with spending fifty billion of everyone else's money to rescue GM, though.

Liberals. Go figure.

61 1968 Ford Galaxy 500 Bought if for $300 in 1985 from a little old lady who only drove it to church. A boat that got about 15 miles a gallon, but that was back it was a buck a gallon. Could fit 7 guys and couple of cases a beer in it easy. The AM radio still worked. Great times.

68 VW seems to think that the UAW is just like the German unions which actually have work councils with management in order to make better use of the labor to make a better car. Efficiency and quality is anathema to the UAW, whose only goal is to create more dues payers. German plants have one other advantage. Most of their lower skilled assembly line functions are automated. Robots don't take 3 hour lunch breaks and come back drunk or stop the line because the UAW slug whose supposed to fetch the parts from the bins fell asleep in the shitter.

71 Looks like a 1962 Ford Falcon. *** I'm terrible at idenifying a car by the year but it caught my eye. The crappy Iphone photo doesn't do justice to how nice it looked. The paint was like a mirror but in the photo it looks dull. My mom had a red Falcon at one point. She loved that car.

They could easily fit a 289 under it and were very lightweight. The 1st generation Mustangs were built on the same chassis as the Falcons. My personal experience with good, reasonably priced cars is this: I've owned many used cars but, far and away, the best, most reliable ever was a 2003 Mitsubishi Galant. 127 OMG, I was just out at Trader Joe's and, for the first time in many years, saw a Gremlin driving out of the parking lot. It was a bright cheesy blue. Much as it shames me to admit, my parents suckered me into one, back in the 80s, wouldn't tell me what it was, said it was "sporty" and drove it up from San Diego and cursed me with it. Super embarrassing to drive, it was like a bronze color. Gives me the shivers just thinking about it. About a year later, I sold it to the resident property manageress, who promptly smacked it all up.

That was one of the clues to the arcing in the TWA Flt 800 fuel tank explosion, very very brief interruptions in the power supply to the FDR from those arcs.

188 Sorry kbdabear, but I think that Shelby is a '69. You are thinking of he '68 GT500 which became the look of the '69 production cars. The '69 Shelby then became the 1970 production cars. See link in name.

191 In automotive news from my household, the transmission in my F-150 suddenly started doing bad things so I limped it over to the Ford dealer last evening. This morning, the service department called back to let me know that their transmission department has so many vehicles ahead of mine that it will be Tuesday before they can look at it. That makes me suspect that Ford might have some issues with their transmissions. Just what I need, a multi thousand dollar bill for a new transmission.

Best one so far: a White-on-Red 67 Corvette 427/435 HP coupe purchased new by a retired Marine and discovered in his garage after his passing in 2012 with just 2,996 miles on it. 195 I drove a 1970 Plymouth Fury III in college. Automatic transmission but no power steering. Boy was that a bitch to drive. Parking was easy: You just pushed cars out of the way, like a tank. I once got into an 'accident' in the Fury in 1979. I was stopped at a stop sign intersecting a 2 lane city street. I looked right, left, then right again, before proceeding. I ended up broadsiding a car that came out of nowhere. Found out she came from a parking lot on my left, diagonally across the street. I literally didn't see her until I broadsided her right rear passenger panel. I had a small scratch on the heavy chrome bumper. When the cop came, I wasn't given a ticket as I technically had right of way. He asked me what I wanted him to do. He said, 'Look, you've got a penny scratch and she's got over $900 damage'. I said if I'm not getting a ticket, then let her deal with the cost of the repairs, which was much more than any ticket would have been back then. That car was a beast, but one I'd want any time if I were in an accident. I also liked the bench front seat, where you needed help from a passenger in getting the damn thing forward as one person just made the seat go askew and not slide easily.
