5 so one of the hardest things I have ever had happen out in the work area was a pair of beautiful fox looking puppies roll up on a site I was filming.....

They very obviously had been abandoned, and I very obviously was in a company truck I could not just take them home in. ; background-color: rgb(169, 169, 169);">

Right so there seems to be an existential crisis for some long-term posters with the layout here, they declaim that reading the site is an eyestrain and that they miss the old hamster driven site's grey boxes.
Consequently as a public service, I am posting change-ups so people can find the "correct" eye relief.

I think it has something to do with being old, conservative and Chesterton Fence.

Now if we can just go to an 80 columns format most of the old timers will be over the moon.

114 Well, I got my fire escape window grille perfected. Throw the lower sash all the way up, and it engages a spring clip, and stays up. Pull out the Secret Locking Device, and a pair of spring-loaded bolts withdraw from the holes in the block wall, and the window grille will fall free when pushed out. So easy, even a Democrat could probably do it.

136 Sven, I've only been here a short while and  I need to be here because my sons and grandkids are here, but the other day saw a video of the Miami waterfront on Sunday afternoon. There was a live band playing country music, people sitting under umbrellas having a drink, people walking by and dancing to the music, sun was shining and not a mask in sight. It looked absolutely normal. I keep thinking that sooner or later......

He would hang out on a rock in the sun or up a tree until we shut down for the day and hike back to the cabin. He would race ahead and lurk until one of the dogs came by and pounce on her. Great fun for him pissing off the dogs.

Posted by:ALH, Sister Golden Hair at April 13, 2021 08:04 PM (oUcR5)

Oh no. I am stuck here in my ridiculously overvalued property in Lower Alabama, land rich and cash poor.  I thought that when I retired we would sell this place and buy a mountaintop in the very northeast corner of Alabama near Mrs928's BFF but no, Mrs928 wants to die here, so I built a 40x30x14 metal building for me to spend my retirement in.

My next move will be to the family plot in Runnels County Texas.

One thing to remember about shooting rifles or shotguns indoors is that the blast and concussion of anything other than a .22 LR is aggravated compared with non magnum handguns.
Usually best to wear earplugs plus ear muffs to block noise and the polite thing to do is situate yourself if able at the far ends of the range line as some of the semi auto rifles have quite energetic ejection of hot brass.

Found a bad spot in an old No. 4 Enfield rifle's barrel that was collecting some fouling near the bore.  Used Iosso bore paste and made it a bit slicker.  The nice thing about the rigid bore scope by Teslong is that it has inches marked on the shaft (no jokes please) so that you know the precise area where to focus your attentions.

250 NST,  You are getting pretty serious about getting back to the country if you are considering ice houses and root cellars.  Mountainous terrain is usually your friend in that case and if you are near a mountain creek, a slight diversion of creek water can often chill your stuff down nicely even in the dead of summer.

However, refrigerators and freezers are pretty energy efficient if you limit the time that you open and shut them and you can also add additional insulation outside of the case (just don't block airflow to the coils.).

Rumor has it that the perp had serious connections to / dirt on / was a supplier to the local popo, and that the true story will come out once everyone who could be compromised is dead.

The datacenter expects 100% of servers to be back online by end of day Friday, though I don't have anything specific for our server.  Then we'll need to figure out whether we switch back, move this software over to the main server (which is 4x faster than this one so it will run much better), or what.

Have been advised, that you do need to run gas through one about once a year or so to keep the gaskets from leaking.

279 I was going to mention this on a Gun Thread for the guys, but I just "made" a rolling tool box/cart.
I bought a small rolling Craftsman toolbox and put a 2'x3' wood top on it, with a 2'x3' piece of Stainless Steel sheet metal over the wood. Then, on one corner I have a Bench Vise, and on the opposite corner is a Bench Grinder. Both tools are attached via bolts with wing nuts for easy removal in case I want to use the entire table-top to work on something big.
It's small, but this cart of mine can roll anywhere in the garage or outside in the driveway to work on stuff.

264 Aetius451AD,  Hollywood's creative energies are dead so to get films financed, they keep trying to reuse old intellectual property with minimal rewriting.  Eventually, they will dispose of actors and simply deepfake the remakes.  Can's say I am looking forward to seeing the deepfake gender switch of Tom Cruise in Topgun 2029 in a greenscreened F35.

Agreed for films, certainly. Games have been resistant to it somewhat so far. Just kind of pisses me off because usually Sony have made good decisions. Plus, I would prefer to see a game that actually has a hopeful message rather than another rehash of the dark, nihilistic shit from TLOU.

357 I had a conversation with a junior NCO in the field yesterday, the lad has an analytic mind and is roughly 23 and views "religion" as the causative of the GWoT.

Well, Atheism in the form of Statism in all of its manifestations:  Marxism, Democratic Socialism, Fascism, Stalinism, Mao...   gave us over two hundred million dead in the span of a couple generations.
And that doesn't count the slaughter of babies, performed in the name of Margaret Sanger.
And it really serves no one well when every faith system is lumped in the general category of "religion".

367 Critical race and queer gender theory seminars left unargued and undisputed at a widespread grammar school level? I dunno if anyone say that coming.

Some did.  That's the problem with letting public schools get away from the Three Rs - once they start working in morals, ethics, and civics ?  Then it's all up to how those in charge view those topics.  And those topics - despite the cries of many here - are indeed subjective.  Here's the blind spot - a lot of folks just always assumed their views would remain, if not the mainstream views, at least the dominant views.  Always beware of what powers you give government - because "your side" won't always be in charge.  What's "right" and "wrong" may be static in your mind.  That's not how it works, however, in the public consciousness.  Right and Wrong are topics best taught at home - and nowhere else.

For the record - the Greatest Generation couldn't wield this power worth a shit either, so I don't want to hear anything about how much better it used to be.  Wrecking something of this magnitude takes time - they just did their part early.  But the seeds were sewn back then and even earlier.  We've just got the dubious honor of living through the part where everything falls to shit slowly - then all at once.

Maybe we're just doomed to rinse and repeat - until enough people understand that those that seek power do so for the trip.

Homeschooling is always an option.  About half of my cowokers at the last job were doing it.  Yes, it may involve one of the parents dropping out of the workforce or not be viable in the case of divorce...but...that's kind of my point, many of my fellow millennials are screwed up due to their unwitting participation in a failed social experiment to see what happens when both parents go wheeeee all day errday with the social collective backing them up on it.  Gen X experienced this too, to a lesser degree.

Now, it should be noted that I'm rather libertarian on most social issues and furthermore don't think it matters overmuch which half of the marriage plays the role of domestic spouse, but I'm also a hardline empiricist and the said experiment has demonstrated quite strongly that one of them does need to do it.

The urge to eat grass is to help the digestion to cut up hairballs/animal parts in the stomach so that they pass thru, or to induce vomiting if they don't.

It gets to be a habit, so I have had cats that often would eat up grass outside and spit it up with nothing else, so at least then grass led to spit up.

I'm pretty proud of some of the "supplements" I've taught my kids - particularly regarding Mandela and Ghandi.  I really wish public schools would just stick to the Three Rs - they're not qualified to teach anything else, and what you want anything else taught is largely a matter of opinion anyway.

I just don't know how much it matters.  My daughter was an ace writer - went to state with a paper on the Clinton body count.  Now, two years later - total SJW.  I used to think kids were a blank slate, before I had kids.  Now, my analogy is a compass.  The come out with a heading.  You can vary that by a measure of degrees.  But not 180 degrees.  Not even 90, I don't believe.

I've had a tremendous amount of fun discussing things with my oldest.  She's really enjoying coming home and asking me about environmental stuff she's heard or seen mentioned in school and - related - how science actually works and how simple it is.

Her favorite is for us to talk out how the entire life cycle and all costs throughout have to be taken into effect when comparing things like windmills, solar panels, new-production electric cars, etc. against a used Corolla with 30K miles that requires no new parts, or the mining and disposal of lithium battery components, etc.

It's nice to see her brain work that way.

They're talking about the people who believe black people are genetically inferior to white people and require assistance to find housing, feed their kids, go to school, get IDs, etc., right?

546 ALH, I don't discuss politics with the younger daughter, especially around the grandbabies (thus the third rail reference). Older daughter has no f's to give.

Hope you all have a lovely night.

Next, we will get you into reloading so you can be an arsenal and a ammunition manufacturer of deadly bullets.   Then you buy firearms in new calibers so you can reload them too.  Soon afterwards, you will find yourself going to the range so you can empty the brass so you can reload.

But then there is casting your own bullets.  So far, I have resisted that one but may have to due to current limited bullet supply of some old warhorse oddball milsurps.

553 What the hell is this documentary about the Pope that they're hawking on Discovery+? It strikes me as...unseemly somehow.

Just another propaganda attempt to force you into thinking you're a bad person if you don't agree with Frankie Fabulous' "thinking" on migrants, Gaia and morality.

Benedict is the pope, not this mincing heresiarch.

Absolutely - if the cable channels are talking up the Pope, he's doing something wrong.

Please forgive me, but I'm gonna throw in my $0.02 request for a bit of Pixy Misa formatting upgrading:

Prior to The Fire, when I hit "refresh" in a comment thread, everything I'd already read remained above the current comment, and everything new loaded under what showed on the screen.  Made it damn easy to just continue reading, from that point onward.

The "jump to bottom", means I have to scroll up and either "find" where I left off before the refresh, or make a point of having remembered which comment number I was on before executing said refresh.

Restoring the "remain at present comment number" function, would greatly smooth out reading a multi-hundred comment thread, especially one that keeps adding comments at a furious pace, such as this.

And that is the end of my $0.02 Pixy Misa formatting request.

558 It's nice to see her brain work that way.

746 Watts is 1 HP.  Now have her go out, get the spec on her car, and imagine driving it for an hour a day.  Hell - be generous - figure she's only getting half that horsepower.

Now - have her do the math.  746 Watts times that HP times one hour is how many kWh that spiffy new electric car is going to need - every day.  Now show her your electric bill for the month - and let her grind on where all that extra magical electricity is going to come from.  We haven't even got into charging efficiency - battery efficiency - and such.  But I think she, and you, might enjoy the exercise.

559 Custom blog software?  I like the way you think, Pixy.

I've had the displeasure of dealing with WordPress and Joomla a couple of times, suffice it to say that I am not remotely a fan of either.  I get that they automagically do many useful things, but it comes with a massive cost in terms of bandwidth and system resources and the inner workings have definitely come out of the "let's pile random code frameworks on top of each other until something interesting happens" school of stereotypical web-dev thinking.

Posted by: CppThis at April 13, 2021 09:52 PM (zcf1k)

560 Her favorite is for us to talk out how the entire life cycle and all costs throughout have to be taken into effect when comparing things like windmills, solar panels, new-production electric cars, etc. against a used Corolla with 30K miles that requires no new parts, or the mining and disposal of lithium battery components, etc.

It's nice to see her brain work that way.

You should be proud of yourselves as parents and your daughter as having wisdom.  A lot of smart people are unable to see things from a systems analyst approach.  Your daughter might be interested in Chris Craft's autobiography, a Man Called Flight.  His discussion of how NASA started the whole manned space flight program on the fly is fascinating along with the subsequent development of the Manned Flight program.

564 If "students are mine, bell to bell"; ask them why they aren't protecting them from psychopath students and nutbars with guns. The concept of "in loco parentis" doesn't apply. They have no problems brainwashing your kids, but they won't take the rudimentary steps to protect them physically. No liability in their minds.

567 Done.

Posted by: Walter Freeman at April 13, 2021 09:58 PM (+WWsf)

568 Yeah, that's some great smart-kid thinking right there.  Really consider the whole thing from a systems perspective...way too many 'smartest guys in the room' are good at the syntax of whatever they're doing but haven't got a clue about how anything actually works.

I'm dealing with some rather unpleasant code at work right now that's left over from a former employee who was clearly very familiar with all the super slick features of .NET but never bothered to ask what the project was actually supposed to do.  The result is a jumbled mess of spaghetti that works great when it works, but has some gaping feature gaps and is so monolithic that a lot of it will need to be rewritten.

569 They have no problems brainwashing your kids, but they won't take the rudimentary steps to protect them physically. No liability in their minds.

Heh - one of the instances was insanely the opposite.  Tornado warning.  They didn't want to let me sign my daughter out and take her home.  Because "liability reasons".  I went to the classroom and took her home.  They were not amused.  I did not care - even when the stupid bint in the office started screaming - literally - for "Mr. So and So" to intervene.  It was surreal.  And instructive of the idiocy that was coming.

It's funny you would say this because she came home around Christmas talking about a class discussion on how awesome the International Space Station was because it was powered entirely by solar panels.  We dug into it a bit and found out that the bleeding-edge incredible solar panels wouldn't be able to fully supply power to four small American houses for an entire day.

She loved taking that back to class the next day.

571 I guess breeding drawf cats is getting to be a thing because they're so cute. I don't know what to think about it.

Posted by:lowandslowat April 13, 2021 07:24 PM (4thlk)

Munchkins aren't dwarves, their mutation is just in the length of the leg bones.  There are actual dwarf cats that have other body differences as well such as head size changes and body changes.  In other respects, the Muchkin mutation occurs randomly in cats, so the other health issues a inbred cat breed can have are minimized.

This mutation does have some health impact, and it is lethal if the kitten has two copies of the gene, so a responsible breeder never breeds two short legs.  This has the side effect of having 50 percent of the kittens be 'non-standard'.  About 8 years ago now I got some non-standard Minuet kittens - Minuets are cross Persians and Munchkin, and so they have normal legs and short but not pug noses, and more normal cat bodies than Persians have.  They costed less to be healthier.
